hi everyone, right way too much to catch up on, but will try

podglet can understand your worry. i too spent 9 hrs on labour ward on monday!!!! did my usual trick and fainted 3 times in the morning and was sick 4 times, couldnt get hold of a midwife so phoned labour ward and they told me to go straight in. i said dp would be home soon to take me (as not going to local hospital) and would be about an hour, they wanted to send me in ambulance as i had dd on our own in the flat, had to get a neighbor to come and sit with us (v.v.v embarrasing!) So mum came to look after dd and me and dp went off to hospital, they did bp and temp etc. all fine, put trace on baby (he didnt like the discs and kept kicking them, v. funny!) and he was fine (she said best trace she seen on a 25week!!! proud mummy!) so they did blood test to check for anemia as was anemic with dd. and when they finally got back to us (6 hrs later as they kept forgetting about us) they said all was fine!! but heres a warning apparantly if you lay flat on your back the baby can lay on a nerve which can cause fainting according to the mw i saw, so try and keep heads propped up if you are prone to fianting (or would that just be me??)

right, sorry that was long, will leave you all alone now!

byeeeeeeeeee

Hi All,

Saw my midwife today for my 24 week check - she was very comforting (not) and could not believe how big I was for 25 weeks (tomorrow) and of dear, wasn't I going to struggle nearer the end? Am now v wooried about labour as she also said the baby was measuring big too! Howvever, she checked me over after Wednesday's probs and said that all seemed fine and it may have been a very nasty bug. However, am still not keeping much down so have got to rest over the weekend too - DP is not going to enjoy the fact that he is going to have to do the housework

Stacey - I was told not to lie on my back from around 16 weeks because of the baby lyihg on that nerve. I did suggest that lying on my back was what had got me here in the first place but the Dr did not find that amusing... I find a couple of pillows behind my lover back helps me lay back but not lie flat... Hope you feel better soon - we've all had a bit of a week haven't we?

Eeyore - congrats on your rowing / coxing skill!

Take care all,

Thanks for the reassurance mygirl am a bit calmer now. All my family (maternal side only, paternal side don't count unfortunately) have been big babies, the only 2 under 9lb were my twin cousins who were 7 lb each! plus DP is 6ft4 and 18 stone so I don't think there's a lot of hope for me - hey ho at least it won't come as a surprise! Still don't think it is a terribly clever thing to say to a first timer though...

Lol when i had my scan they gave me a chart with little dots on, babys mesurments were all right at the tope end of the scale so i figure its going to be big, they say that second babies are bigger than first and DS was 6lb so im not tooooooo worried!

I did get torn very very badly with ds (sorry tmi) to the point where they were prepping me for theater because i had one layer of skin holding everything in and was close to a prolapse, luckily they managed to save it before i was whisked into theatre so im hoping it wont be that bad this time

saralou100 · 04/08/2006 18:52

hi guys!!!

podgelet - my sister was told she was having a larger baby, she had a growth scan at 34 weeeks which indicated the baby would be close to 10lb... the midwife when sis was in labour commented on size of baby saying he would be big, guessing around 9lb (she then whispered to me 'i'm being generous') he came out at 8lb 4oz... when i was pregnant with ds it was constantly commented on the small size of my bump, at 8months people thought i was 6months (it drove me insane!!) and ds came out a respectable 7lb 8oz... what i'm saying is these little ones have their own agenda and will come out whatever size they please.. my dp is 6ft5 although not as heavy!

and well done eeyore and your lo on winning trophy's.. very impressive!!

charlee - i had a friend with a similar experience 1st time round, made her very anxious 2nd time as you can appreciate.. she started massaging her perineum well before hand with oil (apparently helps it to stretch - although not sure if it was special oil) she also told her madwife who delivered her 2nd, i think it's to do with pushing when you shouldn't that contributes to you tearing, anyway the madwife was really good and helped her to have more control by talking her through it and she didn't even graze (apparently the baby's head was out and she had to wait for another contraction before delivering the body)

Thanks Saralou thats a good to know, i will deffo mention it to my midwife to see if theres anything in particular to massage with.

Im having my haircut tomorrow a little shorter and more managable as if i let my hair grow it get huge and bushy and annoying to control! lucky for me my sisters a hairdresser and will do it for free

Hi - Tried to catch up the best I could hope folks are all feeling a bit better.

Lying on your back compresses the vena cava ie the main vein returning blood to your heart (as opposed to a nerve) so not very wise to do so - a pillow under your hip to tilt 18 degrees helps prevent this if you must be on your back.
Perineal massage can be done with any oil (kitchen olive or sunflower is fine) but prob best to use a natural vegetable/fruit/flower oil rich in vit E such as grapeseed or starflower. Arnachis (peanut) oil is good too but need to watch re the allergy thing. I did a wee bit of massage each time - ended up having an epis first time round but have never had any further tears - think the water helped soften things.

Had a good time camping! Big boys had a ball riding about on their bikes, baby had a great time escaping and eating rabbit poo and stones. DH did the 100k in 7.5 hrs which he was pleased with as he'd reckoned on 8. Came back exhausted but would def go camping again!!

Buggy wise I've luckily held on to the double mountain buggy I had when the big ones were little - it did cost more than our car (a crappy old volvo) but is fantastic and narrow and I couldn't recommend it enough but I don't use public transport very often (its crap here anyway) and I'm often off-road. Only thing is I'm trying to buy a carrycot to fit on ebay but haven't had any success yet.

Still haven't sold the house don't know what we're going to do but guess we'll manage somehow. Very stressful but there you go.... wish we'd put house at fixed price right at the start (weird way we sell houses here in Scotia).

Sorry for the essay - never really manage to do much less Much love x

CattyB · 05/08/2006 09:55

see told you I couldn't write a little post - even have to add bits on..

my prev 3 ds have all been big - the consultant measured me as 48cm at my 41 week check 1st time round. DS1 came out weighing 9lb 13.5oz and 49cm long but my labour/birth was honestly ok - I only needed a epis as I was determined to have him at home but 2nd stage took longer than the mw would have liked and the ambulance crew were waiting in the living room - at which point I told the mw's to do one if they thought it would help. DS2 10lb 2oz - lovely labour/birth DS3 9lb 12oz - again lovely labour/birth with only tens machine and pool.

MW hasn't measured or palpated this time yet but as I said everyone keeps telling me how massive I am so guess this is another neigh on 10 lber.

LadyAnne1stTimeMum · 05/08/2006 10:50

Hi all

I'm hoping I won't have a big baby (although DP was big weighing in at 10lb something!) I can't forget what happened to my poor little sister. Her baby was over 9lb - she is tiny and to cut a long story short - her baby got stuck with the head crowned. The Midwives didn't do anything saying that as it was 'progressing' there was no need - the baby was stuck for over an hour and as you can imagine my sister was in a right state. Still they did nothing - my other sister (who was a trainee nurse) said she thought they should do something - they treated her like an imbecile and just said that the heartbeat was good and it was progressing - still did nothing - eventually when Amy was born she had such severe brain damage from lack of oxygen that she died a month later (she didn't have the ability to feed). They were compensated - but no amount of money can replace a baby killed by professional incompetence I see the Midwife the day after my birthday (August 15th) - I hope it's the nice one and not the hitler we had last time. I need to talk about this and make sure my birth plan is clear and covers all eventualities.

Anyhow on that somber thought (apologies) I'll leave you to get on with your day. Although I don't feel 100% we have to shift some stuff today as we are moving in two days time.

Look after yourselves

Not sure re the pessary - have you tried ringing NHS Direct, or maybe your on-call midwife?

Is anyone else feeling small for how far along they are? I am 24 + 2 and still wearing my normal jeans, low on the bump but still! I am starting to worry that maybe the baby isnt growing as it should, havent seen a midwife sinc 20 week scan and not due to go again until 28 weeks - what do you think I should do? I know lots of people are feeling big so sorry if this sounds silly but its just as worrying. I am however 5 foot 11 and did have twins last time so maybe I am just worrying about nothing. Any advice from other tall ladies gratefully received!!
