Congratulations dontworry!!!

flyer sorry to hear A is suffering what did they say at the walk in centre? I is sick after every feed if I caught it in a bottle I would say it would be about 3oz worth! alot and forceful and then is sick again if lying down ever. you have my complete sympathy. im exhausted because shes so sick she feeds up to hourly to try and keep her intake up. Just had health visitor round and shes happy with her weight at the moment but is coming back in 10 days to monitor. GP has told us to ty with ranitidine for 2 weeks and if not better go back. Ive been told it should get better by 10 weeks as they grow but just hoping this medicine works. Sorry to hear inlaws are being hard work think I would cry if mine said anything about the medicine. I hate having to give it to her but its made to help them and dr wouldn't give it if they didnt need it x

pinkbuttons · 07/11/2013 13:59

Also thankyou for all information on lactose substitutions think we may give it a go here. Ready to try anything at this point...

My Dr mentioned that she wouldnt assume it was that as Isla has no other problems such as exzema. Did anyones little ones who had lactose intolerance have other symptoms or just reflux?

takingachance · 07/11/2013 14:13

Hi pink I think the more common allergy with babies is cows milk protein allergy which is different to lactose intolerance, i.e. you can have some dairy products that are lactose free, but they would still contain cows milk protein, so you really need to cut out all cows milk products.

My dd1 was sick a lot and I went through trying gaviscon (and found how difficult it is to administer when bf). Then she started getting small blood streaks in her poo - she was about 2 months old at this point (no eczema symptoms). So we were referred to a paediatrician and were told to try dairy free - i.e. as I was bf, it was my diet that had to be dairy free - I think there are dairy free ff available otherwise. It worked within a week or so and as I said earlier, I tried reintroducing dairy every so often and the symptoms came back. Once Emma was on solids, obviously that all had to be dairy free too and she was still bf as well. By the age of 2, she outgrew the allergy.

So with dd2, I contemplated going dairy free from the word go, but thought I would wait and see what happened. From early days, she started being sick, so I then cut out dairy from my diet and she stopped being sick within a few days and is still good now. So it works for us Smile

Sanjifair · 07/11/2013 14:44

Congratulations dontworry!!

Thanks to all those with refluxy babies and snoring DPs! Xx

thatsnotmypineapple · 07/11/2013 14:58

DD1 was cows milk intolerant, along with eggs, white fish and cats, and she had awful colic and reflux. She didn't get eczema until she started on solids, which was when we made the link, as i also was allergic as a child. It might be something about her having the dairy products direct rather than through breast milk. It took a lot of convincing on my part to our hopeless GP to get a referral and therefore diagnosis though.

It is only from this thread though that, four years later, I have realised the connection with her reflux.

OrangeBlossom2 · 07/11/2013 15:30

Health visitor just been, Thomas has put on 8oz in 5 days. Every time he gains weight I am so happy! Now above 8lb we can use his grobags and sling. Still a bit jaundiced though and HV thinks he might have silent reflux. Suggested keeping him upright for an hour after each feed and feeding in upright positions. Also suggested cutting back the ebm bottles now his weight is ok but should be feeding from me 30-40 minutes each time. We manage 5 - 15 minutes often with lots of stop starting so I worry about cutting back too quickly. Confused Whoever else had green poos, it can be a sign of not absorbing food properly or wind but as long as not every poo it is ok. They don't think it is over or under feeding any more. Also it is ok to use olive oil on his face where Thomas has dry skin.

OrangeBlossom2 · 07/11/2013 15:36

Who was talking about twitchy legs yesterday? Thomas is doing it now in his sleep and squeaking. Like when a dog dreams it is running.

Natalieand · 07/11/2013 15:42

What are people's ff babies taking ? Dd is currently on 4oz but sometimes he wants it every 2.5 hours and other times he's going 4 hours sometimes 5 hours at night although that's not very often, he's 22 days old today just looking for comparisons really x

Natalieand · 07/11/2013 15:42

I meant ds not dd lol xx

pinkbuttons · 07/11/2013 15:53

thankyou taking and pineapple! I always doubt GP advice for tiny babies as dont think always have enough experience. Glad I have all of you to ask as well.

Well done on Thomas' weight gain orange

JellyCurls · 07/11/2013 15:54

Natalie baby J is taking about 5oz although sometimes only 3 every 3 hours. He has a bottle at 8pm and that sees him through till 2am though.

Am in a mood with DH although he doesn't know. He took himself off to bed while DS napped and left me downstairs while I look after baby and DD who's off school sick. Reason was he's been up early every day since we got home from hospital. Never mind I up for hours during night and up early when he's at work grrr

Slippysnow · 07/11/2013 15:58

Hi everybody!

I've been really trying to find the best time to make my birth announcement. I feel settled enough to do it now. Our little Boy, Charlie was born on the 29th of October.

I'm not sure if anyone remembered but I was really struggling with irregular contractions from the 24th October. I was also certain my waters had been leaking from 2am. so on 40 +2 I went to the adu, the woman was lovely- smelt the pad (not my finest moment) told me she thought it was discharge, told me to put another pad in and walk for an hour, and return for a speculum test. I did, she sniffed it again and said it wasn't and didn't perform the speculum.

The next evening my contractions cranked up and the fluid was still trickling went back to the birth centre for a second opinion, arrived at 8pm. The midwife was very confused why a speculum hadn't been performed did one and told me that my hind waters were leaking and because they had been leaking for 24hours I would need to be induced.

I was a little disappointed but I got my head around it and was just concerned for the safety of the baby. I was set up with a cannula (drip thing in my arm) for the antibiotics and was told they were waiting for a bed to open up. Along came a doctor who said he didn't want to do unnecessary interventions and induce me too early instead he wanted to send me home and induce me tomorrow evening instead!! This baffled us considering the nice guidelines say an induction needs to occur within 48 hours. Midwife and doctor had a blazing row about it (unfortunately not in our presence). But long story short we were sent home at 1.30 am!

Contractions continued and I had no sleep all night, had an immense pressure in my back and felt like I needed a poo. So traipsed back to st Tommy's Adu in the morning, saw another lovely midwife who was desperate to do an internal but wasn't allowed anything but a speculum, told me my waters were buldging but my contractions weren't regular enough to be admitted (I was in a lot of pain) and sent home to return for the scheduled induction at 9pm. She was very apologetic for how I'd been handled.

Went home returned after lunch because I started bleeding which was very scary. At this point I was in agony after half hour wait in a corridor contracting on the floor with unsympathetic people staring at me, they saw me and quickly admitted me to the home from home (mlu) where I had the glorious gas and air.

Had a great experience, amazing view of Big Ben , I mooned the Houses of Parliament! Unfortunately, when my waters finally went I had meconium in it. So had to be strapped up, but was on all fours. Amazing new midwife came to help me, as the first one went to deliver a baby in the carpark!

After an hour of pushing Charlie came out covered in poo. A doctor was present and kept asking why she was called, the mw was being very calm telling her she would tell her in a min (trying not to concern me) when he was out she explained about my waters etc. She said 'he's fine is that all because it's hand over time'... Lovely.

Had to stay in 24 hours because of the meconium, I was fine slight superficial grazes. He was 7.7 and long.

Apologies for the epic post. Been trying to do it for a very long time.
Baby is very content and we are fortunate that bf is very successful (ATM)
clapham I was in when you was in!! I did have a stroll down the corridor hoping to bump into another mum.

Slippysnow · 07/11/2013 16:03

Been slowly catching up saving the thread for nightime feeds. Great advice as always, hats off to formula feeding you must be very disciplined and organised to be able to do the nightime feeds! And also hats off to people with more than one dc! Hard work just one

PseudoBadger · 07/11/2013 16:51

I think reflux might be infectious over the internet :(
I've been so pleased that C hasn't suffered with it like DS did. But lo and behold the last few nights she's been so unhappy after night feeds, and today she was awake from 2am until 2pm (apart from a nap in the sling) and was basically crying what sounded like in pain most of the time.

She's fed lots and rooted/chewed hands if not feeding (she's fed lots the past few days) and has vomited large amounts (for her) of curdled milk. When weighed this morning she's only gained 30g in 4 days, whereas she was gaining about that in a day.

If she's bad overnight again I'll go to the doctor tomorrow. I'm not pissing around with Gavsicon this time either, I'll go straight for ranitidine if she does have it. I'm not happy :(

They are calling with the jaundice results tomorrow.

emmoB13 · 07/11/2013 16:52

Natalie - DS is on 4oz's every 3 - 4 hours but that has only been in the last few days because iv been offering more re advice on here. Hes 6 weeks today. I dont think the gap between feeds is important i think its how many ozs in a 24hr period so hes probably drinking more in the day to go longer at night. Although longer gaps is desired!

MrsO27 · 07/11/2013 16:56

'Me' post alert. Day from hell and seriously considering giving up breast feeding. Lo just seems to want to fight with my boobs every time now and it's really quite painful and distressing. From 230pm to 430pm he screamed constantly, in between pulling on and off my breast. He did the same for 2 hours in the morning and at lunchtime. DH gets in 10 mins ago, picks him up off me and he's instantly calm. Just feel like a rubbish mother. Currently taking some time out away from them both in our bedroom. If I go to bottles I'm thinking someone else might be able to help out with the feeding and save my sanity. However, saying that already makes me feel guilty... This is hard.

Shirehobbit · 07/11/2013 17:02

Epic tale slippy - glad everything worked out in the end. There are a few of us that need to complain about our treatment, though Sad

By the sounds of it, my Al really is a hungry, hungry boy - he's having 5oz of formula 4-6 x a day as well as breastfeeding for 30mins to an hour before each feed Shock
He's 32days old now.

OrangeBlossom2 · 07/11/2013 17:03

MrsO Thanks that's one of the reasons the HV today thought Thomas has silent reflux. Wanting food but then coming on and off, arching his back and pulling away, being ok when hold him upright, but then he tips and bobbles his way over to try feeding again and so it continues with lots of little feeds.... Other than a mega sick this morning, he isn't massively sicky. He doesn't like being put down and squeals in what looks like pain a lot. Could it be the same with you? Yes pseudo maybe it is catching! Still not sure that's what he has yet but interesting as someone suggested it might to me a while back on here.

OrangeBlossom2 · 07/11/2013 17:04

Shock slippy. Glad all was well in the end. Agree with shire, there has been some shoddy treatment of people on this thread.

Mnippy · 07/11/2013 17:31

Congrats Slippy!

MrsO - you are NOT rubbish, naturally babies are often less agitated around people that don't smell of milk. Thanks. Please don't feel guilty. It took a sharp talk from my SIL to help me leave (most of) my guilt behind.

Nat - I'm mixed feeding so it isn't hugely relevant but MnipJnr is taking about 10-15 min per boob followed by 2-2.5 oz of formula - about 8 times a day so every three hours with longer intervals at night. Interesting to hear what other ff, bf and mixed feed babies are taking.

MrsO27 · 07/11/2013 18:27

It could be orange, he's just really inconsistent. We'll have bad days, then I think we've turned a corner.... and then, well, then we had today. The aggression on my boobs (only way I can describe it) is quite a new thing though. He just fights with my boobs and takes ages to latch and he wasnt like that before, albeit he has had other really fussy days which I've put down to cluster feeding/growth spurts.
Anyway, feeling less emotional now than when I posted earlier. Big hug from dh and a good cry helped! Seeing the Hv again on Tuesday so will speak to her about it and will mention silent reflux.
You're right about the milk smell too mnippy. Hv told me at my last appt. that it would be useless me doing skin to skin with him when he's fretful as I would make him worse.
He's fast asleep now. All the fussing and being awake for hours today should ensure more sleep this evening, surely?!!
Sorry for the me post. Tomorrow's a new day!
