I've never had a flu or a flu jab before but I feel I want to take any extra protection i can. Pregnant ladies are v susceptible to side effects which is the worst thing about getting a flu.

I don't think I ever felt to tired. Ever! Also at the verge of tears all day.. Not that I even have a reason to be.

Bezzabelle · 24/10/2013 14:17

I don't want to be a scare monger but developing flu when pregnant carries significant risks that imo are not worth taking. However, saying that, it is a completely personal choice.

MarlenaGru · 24/10/2013 14:24

mtmd I am also on the verge of tears. So bloody embarrassing too.

Another unsure about the flu jab. Never had it and not sure I want to start now. I know my dh will want me to have it though.
bezzabelle what are the significantly increased risks? It wasn't offered when I had my DD as far as I know.

Bezzabelle · 24/10/2013 14:36

Our immunity is lower so have more chance of getting flu especially as coming into winter months. Our risks of developing complications are higher if we were to get flu such as bronchitis, septic shock etc... Also if we were to get flu in later month, higher risk of premature birth, low birth rate and stillbirth. Flu jab is said to be totally safe in pregnancy and newborn will also get the benefits in first few weeks of being born. I can totally understand not wanting to put anything foreign into body and I have struggled myself taking anti sickness meds for hg which specifically says on the leaflet not to take in pregnancy(!) but I have been reassured that it is better not to be throwing up constantly than the risk on me and baby of being dehydrated.

GirlsGotInk85 · 24/10/2013 14:45

Urgh, morning sickness hit big time today.......forgot how horrible it is :-( anyone else suffering with nausea and gagging morning till night?

MTMD · 24/10/2013 14:54

When someone suffers with flu, that have very high temperature which is dangerous for babies who cannot regulate their body temperature whilst in the womb. That can alone can be very dangerous.

MTMD · 24/10/2013 14:56

Cannot even write a coherent pharagraph today, apologies. I don't understand how anyone's expected to work in such state but here I am! :)

carrie105 · 24/10/2013 15:14

Wow it's taken me nearly a whole day to catch up. Congratulations to all the newcomers!

On the subject of flu jabs, I've done a bit of reading on it and decided for me personally that the risks of getting flu outweigh any potential risks of getting the vaccine, especially as I'm a tube commuter and exposed to many people's coughs and sneezes on a regular basis, so I'm booked in on Tuesday to have it done.

Very jealous of all these scans and booking in appointments, so happy for everyone who has been so far and things have gone well. My booking in isn't until I'm 11+1 and my scan is at 11+6 so all very close together. Currently 8+2.

I've been very lucky and only had very mild nausea so far. I am exhausted though. I went for a yoga class yesterday and was all geared up to go for a swim afterwards. Got as far as the pool and thought I'll just have a sit down here for 5 minutes... and promptly fell asleep on the pool lounger. Woke up an hour later a bit dazed and confused and gave up and went for a nice hot shower instead of a swim!

MTMD · 24/10/2013 15:21

Carrie, that's really funny! Really jealous you managed a yoga class, I've stopped going to Pilates due to tiredness. Occasional burst of queasiness doesn't help either..

ohcluttergotme · 24/10/2013 15:21

Lounging by the pool for a wee kip sounds bliss Carrie, probably did you every bit as good as a swim!
Scan went well, little bean where it should be and heartbeat heard.
I feel so reassured, I really think all pregnant ladies should get an early scan as it really is reassuring and has helped me cope with feeling so sick as I know everything's ok iyswim Smile

MarlenaGru · 24/10/2013 15:36

That is brilliant news!
I am trying to get dh to book one for me as I can't phone at work but he is being rubbish :-(

GillyBillyWilly · 24/10/2013 15:37

Congrats clutter Smile

I've never had a flu jab before but I do pretty much always get a bad week or so of flu during winter which I normally just deal with.

However I don't want to be in that position this winter now that I'm pregnant ....which is why I had the flu jab today Smile

The midwife also said pregnant women are more susceptible to flu and as I get it almost every year I thought it best to get the jab.

There are less risks from having the jab than there are of getting flu when pregnant .... so in my opinion it's better to get the jab than risk it and possibly get the flu.

But totally understand some people don't want to!

MarlenaGru · 24/10/2013 16:20

I have only had flu once and it was the worst week of illness I have ever had but once in over 30 years seems pretty good odds to me. Food for thought, definitely.

GillyBillyWilly · 24/10/2013 16:22

God I wish I'd only had it once!
I seem to get it every winter. Can't remember the last winter I had flu-free!!!!!!

bludgerwitch · 24/10/2013 16:30

Hiya! Back from booking appointment, it took for bloody ever and I hadn't properly so I am just now waiting for my first proper food of the day. Sad

Booking appt. went ok, and I got yet another scan and have a wee picture now! And my notes, of course, that bile green badge of maternity!!!

GillyBillyWilly · 24/10/2013 16:36

Yay bludger!! Smile

Liquidambar · 24/10/2013 16:41

ohclutter great news. glad everything is okay. it must be such a relief. Did you go to the royal?

I think I will have the flu jab as I work in a busy place and I will be travelling almost every month until February. Airports and airplanes are not pregnant friendly! I will read a little bit more. But I think it's a very personal choice. When I was pregnant with Ds in 2009 I don't remember having the 'general flu vaccine' but I had the swine flu one. Looking back it seems crazy because it was a new vaccine that hadn't been really tested.

I have a horrible headache today. But I usually get it so it's not really a symptom. My breasts are still tender but they haven't increased (I'm a 32A Angry )

VickyVix · 24/10/2013 16:59

Ah great news clutter :)

I have my first GP appointment in the morning, not expecting much but will be great to get the process started and then hopefully will have some scan dates to look forward to Grin .......once the GP has sent the docs to the midwife anyway

Your day tomorrow sounds very exciting wispa enjoy!! And hope your scan goes well

samovar · 24/10/2013 17:15

I don't remember feeling so utterly rotten as i do right now. i wonder if it's just a selective memory, or if it really is worse this time around. The thought of cooking..

cheesysmile · 24/10/2013 18:01

Glad all ok clutter.

Soz didn't check back in earlier after appt but rushed off to work. All went fine and I was only there just over half an hour. I stupidly went to the loo just before and then couldn't pee on demand so had to drop sample off after work Blush. She said i should now get my scan date through the post in the next couple of weeks so FX that comes through fairly quickly. I want to book the day off work so hopefully won't be too short notice. I wasn't asked abt the flu jab ... might read up on it and then ring docs if i think i should have it. Anyway lots of stuff to read now!

Gilly think you're in London, if so nowhere near you im afraid. I'm a bit of a country bumpkin! Grin

Bezzabelle · 24/10/2013 18:29

Oooh cheesy, what region?

wispaxmas · 24/10/2013 18:32

marlena, you were only knocked out by the flu for a week?! The one and only time I got it I ended up admitted to hospital! I was coming and spluttering for about 6 weeks.

I get the flu jab annually now, which i should've done previously as I'm asthmatic. I just couldn't be bothered about it until I found out just how horrible it is for me.

wispaxmas · 24/10/2013 18:35

carrie, I'm in nearly the same boat as you as far as booking in and 12-wk scan, they're booked for when I'm 10+3 and 11+3, and I decided I couldn't wait that long and booked myself a reassurance scan for tomorrow at 8+3.
