But will make sure no-one's left on the old one.

Hope everyone is blooming and not too hot!

welcome to the thread luboo!! sorry to her that youve had a rough time with the nausea and heartburn. i sympathise with the heat...i hate it too

hope all you ladies are doing well and that its cooling down a bit for you...according to the forcast this morning, today and tomorrow should be a little cooler

Gingeme · 20/07/2006 09:59

Welcome lubboo. Thats exactly what happened with my first ds. It seemed as soon as the sickness stopped the heartburn begun so I do sympathise. Im just starting to get heartburn now on my 25th week but nothing as bad as ds3 thank goodness. Had my ds2 summer concert yesterday evening and he had quite a major part in it. I had tears in my eyes though to think this was his last concert at his primary school. Was a very nice if a bit hot evening. I had my fan on all night in my bedroom. Cooled it down a bit but I still woke twice through the night for a drink and a walk round. Phew!!

catgirl · 20/07/2006 13:03

hi all - just checking in, hello to anyone new.

Think someone asked about a book to read to a child about mum having a baby - we love 'There's a house in my Mummy', by Giles Andre (sp?) and ?, my ds is nearly 4 and knows it (nearly) off by heart!

We are heading up to North Wales tomorrow morning for my Dad's 70th birthday - it claims to be cooler up there than London, so heres hoping.

Stay cool! Off now to read what I have missed ... I may be a while....

Swizzler · 20/07/2006 13:58

Welcome Luboo - feel free to whinge as much as you like! Hope it cools off soon and you start to sleep better. I know the feeling - I seem to be permanently grumpy. Took the day off yesterday, though, so got some nice loose mat. tops and spent the afternoon snoozing.

Re coping with the heat, Boots have a 3 for 2 offer on Magicool spray. Got some yesterday and it's great - though the effects soon wear off. I now have a bottle in my handbag for travelling and one by my bed (OH has the third for using at his desk).

Majormoo - time to throw an almighty strop about the air con? Could you ask your health and safety person - you are more at risk from heatstroke while pg, as your body temperature is up a point or two anyway. I keep pointing this out to people who say that everyone is suffering - sorry, but I am OFFICIALLY suffering more. So there.

Wuzzle: my mw took some more blood tests at my last appointment and one of the things they were testing for was raised blood sugar (along with iron and something else I can't remember). I assume that if there's a problem they get you to do a GTT test. You might also get one if you're in a risky group, e.g. overweight.

Re being called fat - any comments like that deserve a good slap. We are all beautiful and amazing - any dissenters can get stuffed!

DogMum · 20/07/2006 15:21

Welcome Luboo and whinge away. If you can't do it here, you can't do it anywhere.

I like your style, Swizzler. Maybe we should all stand in front of the mirror and repeat, 'I am beautiful and amazing.' Probably not one for the loos at work though. And I agree about Majormoo's air conditioning - if there is a unit available, pregnant woman should get first refusal. Maybe it needs to be pointed out to them.

I guess it must be hot today as my dog point blank refused to go for a walk this morning (or maybe it's because he's been having boring walks in the shade.) Chucked a watering can of cold water over him and froze a tub of chicken stock for this afternoon. Not sure if either of these things are recommended for pregnant women too, but if you do fancy a more savoury form of ice lolly ...

Swizzler · 20/07/2006 16:43

Too right. Just think: we are actually managing to grow real babies inside these bumps - don't know about you, but I find that pretty astounding. I suppose it's more real now I can feel the LO thrashing about.

I also quite like the quote from the Best Friend's Guide to Pregnancy: 'we vow to sit on anyone who looks at us sideways'

majormoo · 20/07/2006 20:14

welcome Luboo. Heartburn is horrible isn't it?

Thanks for the comments about the air con. I actually felt ill by the time I left yesterday. My boss ordered a unit which we should get on Monday, so at least by then we will have one in our part of the office too. Was really moody about it this morning again-thinking how I was expected to work in this heat (it was 35degrees in the office WITH the air con so god knows what it was in ours)and nobody offered to swap desks or anything (mind you who wants to work in a furnace!) I was therefore very slack today, and after a hospital appointment in London this morning, went shopping for a couple of hours round Oxford Street rather than going back to the office!!

I had been to see the counsellor at Kings and I was SO emotionally drained afterwards.I haven't seen her since I had my 12 and 20 week scans, and thought I was doing OK with the pregnancy now, but boy once the flood gates opened! I feel really lucky that I get this service for free, because I think I really needed this time to sort all these feelings about the pregnancy out before the baby arrives.

Have a good evening all. What with all the stress of my air con and the emotional day I've had today I am going to collapse on the sofa and allow myself a glass of wine while I watch Big Brother!

luboo · 21/07/2006 06:31

Hi Majormoo,
Well done on the counselling. I know how draining it can be. I had extensive counselling which finished just before I got pregnant as I had been on anti-dpressants for 5 years. I stopped taking them when I found out I was preggers and have so far managed to stay off them which has amazed me. I am worried about PND though and feel as though I am braced for a return.
Keep going with it

MrsBlobby · 21/07/2006 11:56

Thanks for all your tips on keeping cool, particularly emmy and mamado. Last night I had a wet pillowcase over me and the fan on with its back to the window! Fab! It really cooled the room down! Only thing is, the coldness of the pillowcase did NOT impress my bump, who tried to kick it off unceremonially, like it was an intruder! In the end I had to move it across my shoulders and warm up my bump and then we were both happy!

Going back to an old topic (sorry!) had decided on a Stokke Sleepi cot and was just researching prices, when I came upon a Nature's Nest hammock and this has really captured my imagination. They describe it as a good transition between the womb and a cot as it moves when they do. I seem to remember a couple of people mentioning hammocks at the pizza night and wondered if you've had any experience of them and if there were any in particular you could recommend?

jmcmugwump · 21/07/2006 18:23

Welcome luboo, hopefully we have peaked at the hottest day so fingers crossed it will get better here on in.

Am just counting lucky stars that we are all due in October and not August, must try next time to plan more around the seasons!! (Next time ....OMG what am i saying???)

Well I got off very lightly with no morning sickness, but am just starting to get heartburn, well i think that's what it is, feels like a big burp got stuck (sorry if TMI)anyway the doc has given me some Gaviscon, but my sister was getting through a bottle a week so I'm hoping not to follow suit.

28 weeks today not long to go now, and only 8 more weeks at work yay ;) can't wait!

Has rained twice while I have beenr eading the thread and made buggar all difference, so let's hope the showers forecast for tomorrow help. Chins up and I like the amazing & beautiful thing... must remember to chant that as I throw bricks at OH!!

Gingeme · 21/07/2006 21:23

Wow milee thats shed a whole different light on things. Must admit it is also nice when complete strangers smile at me on the train or bus as if to say 'good luck to ya girl'. Or maybe their thinking'ha ha I know what you were doing a few months ago!'. Though I am getting a bit peed off with the'How are you coping with this heat?'comments. I was expecting ds2 in August and coped very well thankyou. Would rather be suffering the heat myself than having a screaming baby who cant deal with the heat and there isnt a great deal you can do about it.

Gemmitygem · 22/07/2006 04:50

I agree Millee; there is a certain 'power' about pregnant women, and I guess most adults have either been pregnant, been the partner of someone who has, or would like to have a child one day, so it is a primeval kind of interest in you; but irritating sometimes!

People here (in Kazakhstan) are VERY careful of you when preg; take even a folder off you if you're walking round the office with it etc, and women come up to me in the gym and say 'but you're exercising: hasn't your doctor forbidden it?' (I'm only going on the stationary bike thing). They don't do any exercise whatsoever when preg... But then they have a pretty high infant/maternal mortality rate and terrible medical care, so I guess you have to be more careful than normal. Certainly glad to be coming back to have the baby in Europe!

Love the idea of being a goddess but at the disappearance of spots - have just developed some after perfectly clear skin for months! Prob the combination of heat and London grubbiness.

It seems a bit cooler here after the rain. I'm also taking advantage of a quiet weekend to nap as much as possible. Other advantage of the heat: defrosting the fridge was dead easy!

Hope you're all enjoying the weekend. Only 8 weeks at work fr me as well - but a vast to do list...

Gingeme · 23/07/2006 12:24

Oh no its happening! Went to bed with fat akles last night Going to my parents down the coast on Tuesday and I know well be doing alot of walking about. Oh what a bummer!! Hope you ladies are all doing ok in this heat. Though it is thankfully a lot cooler today. Wonder if it will last. xxxx

luboo · 23/07/2006 14:44

Well, I finally had enough of the hot, sleepless nights on Friday so DH went off to B and Q in search o an air cooling unit. It was only £45.00 and has ice packs and water to make the air cool. It's not bad and has certainly made going to bed a more inviting prospect. jmcmugwump, good luck with the heartburn. If you find the Gaviscon isn't enough my midwife recommended Zantac tablets. (I have had it for 8 wks now and getting worse) The Zantac are really good but the downside is they do make you burp!
I am really suffering from low blod pressure at the mo.. passed out at a work BBQ last night which has left me feeling a bit crappy today. Oly 8 weeks left at work too - hurrah!!!

whiffy · 24/07/2006 09:59

My Dr wouldn't let me take Zantacs....might go and ask again...

Just back from week in Italy - same temperature as here but fab air-con in hotel apartment so very relaxing (unlike nightmare flight back on Ryanair which deposited us at Stansted at midnight, along with what seemed to have been another dozen delayed flights).

Italy was fab though would recommend that people do not touch ParentsNeedPampering with a bargepole. They are 'affiliated' on this site but not for long methinks (rule number 1 in retail: know your customer. There were about 6 couples there and aparantly one of them - who moved her family to another hotel - is a co-founder of mumsnet! Not sure if that's true or was just a rumour but very funny if true). Some bits of hoiliday though were very funny. After five days of 'PorkSteak' as a main for dinner we were offered 'Chops'. "Great" we said, "what kind of chops?" "PorkSteak Chops". And then we had the daily trauma of the cereal bowls at breakfast - the waiters wouldn't bring them out to the buffet in case 'everybody' then wanted cereal, so you used to have to grab harassed non-english speaking waiter every day asking for coppas, and then spoons, and then milk. Then on final day we came to buffet to find cereal bowls AND spoons AND cold milk all out ready. Just no cereal as they'd run out.

Welcome to new mnetters - we are expanding in all directions obviously. 'Cept me as I lost weight on holiday I think (owing no doubt to aforementioned food trials).

anyway back at work and 220 emails await, so best get on with it.

Oh and in terms of the background stories....met DH in drunken haze in dodgy bar in Puerto Banus, 7 m/c's then DS popped out in 03. Expecting again thanks to very drunken night in London whereupon devious DH decided he would take the parenting decision for me as he felt I was faffing about too much. Alcohol obviously the running theme of relationship. Have been pondering option of planting a field of Viognier grapes in back garden in order to cut out the middleman.

New live-in nanny arrives Wednesday so v v exciting week ahead.

luboo · 24/07/2006 12:18

Whiffy,
Why did your doc not let you have Zantac? I am worried now I may have been misinformed...

Swizzler · 24/07/2006 12:45

Welcome back Whiffy! Sorry to hear your holiday didn't go as planned, but working air con sounds like a huge advantage. Were the nannying/pampering services up to scratch?

Am feeling in mellow mood as we got Green and Black's ice cream for lunch today (I get a free lunch at work). Mmm.

Looks like the temperatures are hotting up again after a break at the weekend, so take care of yourselves and carry water at all times!

Gemmitygem · 24/07/2006 12:50

I love the cereal bowls story whiffy! It's reassuring to think fawlty towers isn't just in britain (or kind of reassuring, anyway).

Ate LOADS of liquorice my Finnish colleague had brought back this morning, before looking on the web and seeing that it can trigger early labour; oops! Would like to keep the baby inside, at least till I leave Kazakhstan in 2 weeks' time.. Might try it again if I go overdue though.

Is anyone else finding that their brain is turning to porridge? (heard it gets worse once the baby is born)..

MrsBlobby · 24/07/2006 13:40

Hope you're feeling ok now, Luboo.

I've just been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. typical - after a blemish-free record. now really worried as have been on-line and see it can trigger early labour if not treated. So will have to go on antibiotics and I was really trying to avoid pills.

DogMum · 24/07/2006 13:48

Yes, GemmityGem. I've burned two loaves of bread in the past week and find I can't concentrate on anything unless I have a short nap every few hours. I've heard it referred to as pregnancy-mush-brain, but not sure if it's an official term.

Welcome back Whiffy. Sorry it didn't go to plan when time is so precious. Sounds as though you had a laugh though. Look forward to hearing about the nanny.

I'm still having checks with the midwife every four weeks, but one of my books says that it should be every two weeks by now. How often is everyone else going?

Swizzler · 24/07/2006 14:09

Dogmum: still every 4 weeks for me (next at 30 weeks). No-one's whipped out a tape measure or checked my legs/feet for swelling either, so I think the description in the books must be wrong!

MrsBlobby: sorry to hear about the infection - at least they caught it early. How long will you be on antibiotics for?
Preg brain: definitely. In an ideal world, I'd be having a nap at the moment - unfortunately still at work

Gingeme · 24/07/2006 14:39

Dont panic Mrs Blobby I dont think Ive had a pregnancy without a urine infection and all my babys have stayed put till their cooked. Unfprtunately I suffer from cystitis when not preg though I drink gallons of water all the time and love cranberry juice!
Pregnancy brain is rife here. Sent my sil text messages yesterday and she ended up ringing me to find out what I was on about .
Liquorice is good for constipation . Never heard of it brining on prem labour though.
My feet are still fat today. Im only 26 weeks. Hope it doesnt carry on till the end of my pregnancy........

MrsBlobby · 24/07/2006 16:10

Thanks for the reassurance about the urine infection. Don't know how long I'll have to take the antibiotics for as I'm seeing the doc tomorrow
Out of interest, do you remember what antibiotics you took, Gingeme (or anyone else that's taken them during preg)? On my travels, have seen that some are better than others during pg and I even saw one (tetracyclene) that can make the baby's teeth go permanently yellow, so def. won't be taking that one!
