Thought I'd start a new one..

But will make sure no-one's left on the old one.

Hope everyone is blooming and not too hot!

nicand2, my tip is to have a very cold shower and then stand by an open window... not very hi tech but kind of works. or during the night go and bathe your feet and legs in cold water..

Another nice one is putting moisturiser, shower gel etc in the fridge, so it's cold. Could you try ice packs during the night too?

Actually I'm giving myself 20 second bursts of cold during normal showers and then trying to breathe normally and not tense up, to practise for contractions. Not sure if it's quite the same as the real thing though!

You'll all think I'm mad now

A sponge down with cold water just before going to bed can work. I'm not helped by the fact that my OH gets really hot as well and gets rather upset if I banish him to the other edge of the bed! May resort to the sofa tonight. Also feeling rather tired and upset at the moment due to loss of sleep. I also worry that the baby is getting too hot, but I assume you'd have to seriously overheat before this became a problem?

Someone also mentioned Magicool spray - will look in Boots on my way home this eve and report.

Finally got round to a haircut - such a relief to get my hair properly thinned. Hairdresser reassured me that, as my hair's quite thick anyway, it shouldn't thin too dramatically once I've given birth. We'll see...

And remember: drink plenty of water!

mamado · 18/07/2006 14:44

Also, if you have a lido/cool river anywhere near you a swim in cold water, even early on in the day, seems to cool down your body heat for the rest of the day. I always used to hate cold swims [even with dp trying to persuade me how blissful they can be], but then was pregnant in the last heatwave [2003] and from then on you can hardly keep me out of cold water!

Tigerlion · 18/07/2006 14:58

Great to catch up with you all after so long and dinner sounds as though it was a success. Is anyone thinking of organising another one soon? Italy was wonderful and we got so much sleep - bliss!

I have recently got a tower fan from Argos which has a timer on it. It has three levels of breeze and is wonderful as it cools the whole room. I have it on a timer for four hours from when we go to bed as I get paranoid about leaving them on all night. The noise is quite soothing as well. Must be similar to what our LOs are feeling in our womb!!!

Just thought I ought to let you know about my recent joy and suggest you all do the same. For those of you who have not yet joined the Boots parenting club, do so as soon as possible. I filled ina form a few weeks ago and the other day received a voucher book entitling me to £17 worth of Number 7 products, free pregnancy bubble baths and loads of other things absolutely free with no having to buy other items. When your LO is born you get a huge Huggies atarter kit worth £30, again for absolutely free.

JOIN NOW LADIES!

Off for a swim to cool down...

majormoo · 18/07/2006 15:37

Hi everyone. Hope you're all well-haven't had time to read thread yet and haven't logged on for a while so have lots to catch up on!

I am so moody because of the heat and my cold. Cannot believe I have 2 more months of work to go. rubbish.

Had lucozade test at midwife this morning-actually quite enjoyed it as was sure I hated lucozade! Baby is head down at the mo-let's hope he stays that way.

Anyway off to catch up-take care

Tigerlion, I have joined the Boots parenting club as well and had my pampering voucher booklet. I have also had my voucher for the Huggies starter kit and got it last weekend. All you have to do is buy a packet of huggies nappies and you get the kit free (worth £24.99).

(you can join the club online - Boots Parenting Club )

The bag is quite spacious although you dont get very much to go with it - I have started using it already as I need to take a bag out with me anyway for spare clothes, wipes, etc for dd (2.8years).

I cannot cope with this heat either and feel sorry for poor dd - her room has been registering 28 degrees at night - have now got one of her windows open and a fan in there to see if it helps. This is Scotland FGS, its not supposed to be this hot

I have to go for a Glucose Tolerance Test tomorrow at 9am so will be fasting from tonight, although I am allowed water (just as well in this heat!). I had it in my last pregnancy but am hopeful that I will have avoided it this time round.

Justers · 18/07/2006 22:18

Hi everyone! Seems like we're all getting uncomfortable now, oh well only 3 months to go!! Someone actually called me 'fatty' yesterday i couldn't beleive it,i felt like slapping her.

wuzzlefraggle · 19/07/2006 10:56

how do they do the glucose test? ive not been told about it or asked for one...is it routine???

emmy01 · 19/07/2006 11:11

Justers- people really are stupid, calling a pg hormonal woman 'fatty' god knows what reaction they could have got, how cheeky!

Seona1973 · 19/07/2006 13:16

wuzzlefraggle, in my last pregnancy I had an elevated sugar level in the bloods done at 28 weeks - I had to go for a glucose tolerance test to see if I had gestational diabetes (which can make the baby bigger due to excess sugar crossing the placenta). You fast from the night before and then you get bloods taken in the morning. You then drink a sugary drink and after 2 hours they take more bloods. From your body's reaction to the sugary drink they can see if you have gestational diabetes. I did have it in my last pregnancy and had to control my blood sugar using diet although some women have to inject insulin as well.

This time my bloods came back ok but just to be sure I was sent for the GTT just to make sure I hadnt developed the diabetes again. Some places may do the test as standard but we only get it if there has been sugar in the urine on a few occasions or sugar in the blood tests or the baby is measuring big for dates, etc.

I have to phone after 4pm today for my results so keep your fingers crossed!!

DogMum · 19/07/2006 13:23

Justers - it sounds as though someone was asking for a good slap. And you can say you're hormonal so you don't have to apologise for anything.

Wuzzle - I think whether they do the glucose test or not depends on whether glucose is detected in your urine. (You know you hand a pot over to the midwife when you get your checks ...) I think the test involves more wee. Glad I haven't been asked to do one - I had enough trouble producing the last sample and then did three straight off when I got home. Sorry tmi, but it's just Sod's law.

Emmy, we don't know the sex. We wanted a surprise. But tbh I'll only be surprised if it isn't one or the other.

Hope everyone's coping with the hottest day of the year better than my dog. Cold wet towels and ice cubes - I'm not allowed to hose him down and wouldn't anyway. I can't bear the thought of standpipes, this pregnant in this heat. Looks as though moving to Scotland wouldn't help either. Hope your test went well Seona.

majormoo · 19/07/2006 13:25

Hope results come back OK Seona.

I cannot stand this heat-I am working in an attic room in an office with no air con. The techies have managed to get an air con unit in their room, but somehow the office pregnant woman is expected to put up with a tiny fan, while the men have the air con!!!. god I am moody!!! I got DH to fill up DD's paddling pool when we got in last night, but it was as much for me to paddle my feet as for her!

Still on the plus side, 28 weeks is a bit of a milestone I think, which we must all have reached or be nearly at, as I think babies have an excellent survival rate if born prematurely from here on in.

DogMum · 19/07/2006 13:25

Sorry Seona - I'm always doing this - getting distracted when replying to posts and a proper reply comes in the meantime.

Yes, fingers crossed.

majormoo · 19/07/2006 13:27

by the way wuzzle, I had to do my lucozade test to see how my body processes the sudden sugar hit. They did a blood test an hour after I drank it-if the results come back dodgy, then they may do a glucose test. Don't think everywhere does the lucozade test though

Good luck Seona x, I think majormoo is right we must have all just reached or are in our 3rd trimester so congratulation to us all, it has flashed by for me so far. So here's to the home run lets hope its not too heavy going at least we are nearly there.

Gemmitygem · 19/07/2006 16:37

sorry to hear you're suffering in the heat: it was about 35 degrees here in Almaty, but it's dry mountain heat, so doesn't fee that bad, and it rained this afternoon and went down to 23..

Justers, my colleague also called me fat today, so I just reminded him not to try that with his girlfriend in the future when she's preg! Had another colleague 'pretend' to punch the bump a few weeks ago, and I burst into tears and got really angry: boy did he learn his lesson. Mind you, that was a really stupid thing to do..

I'm 28 weeks tomorrow, you're right emmy and major, it is a milestone (though will feel more relieved once back in Europe from 6 August, as don't think they even have the capacity to look after prem babies here).

hope it cools down tonight!

Hi folks,

Well my sensitive oh called me a fat minger the other day, was too far away for me to hit him, but have got own back by telling everyone i see, and he is now claiming that I misheard him - I know he was only joking, but he really doesn't seem to have worked it all out yet!!

Another tip for keeping cool(er), fill a 4pt plastic milk bottle with water & freeze it, then stand it in front of the fan, the water will gradually melt cooling the air from the fan. Chap at work recommended it and says it works brill.

Off to get another fab lolly now - might have to change to mini milks as am starting to worry about all the e-numbers in fab lollies, oh well never mind....only one box left in the freezer anyway!;)

Seona1973 · 19/07/2006 19:35

I'm happy to say my blood results have come back normal , so will be able to keep on having my daily fix of ice cream/ice lollies, etc.

I am having a totally different pregnancy than last time - last time had to have blood pressure checked out by using a 24 hour blood pressure monitor (the cuff inflated every half hour during the day and every hour or two at night - neither dh or me slept very well as it used to shake the whole bed). Blood pressure came back fine though - except when I visit the doctors when it tends to go up (white coat hypertension). I also ended up with gestational diabetes and couldnt eat any nice sweet things.

This time the blood pressure is behaving not too badly and I have avoided diabetes so I am a lot happier. It will be a change not to have to go to the hospital for my appointments and have to fight to get a parking space.

Spent most of this afternoon in the shade at my mums watching dd in the paddling pool and occasionally having to move to get a drink or take dd to the toilet (she is being toilet trained and is doing really well). It really is exhausting sitting doing nothing but the heat is very draining. Hope it cools down soon!!

wuzzlefraggle · 19/07/2006 21:13

thanks for filling me in on the glucose test info ladies...the midwife hasnt said anything about my wee except that its clear, so im not going to ask for one or anything.

seona - glad to hear that your bloods came back ok and that you can enjoy your icecream!!

majormoo - have you had your results back yet??

for the first time ever i actually found myself wishing for rain lol...i have come to the conclusion that heat is much more fun when your not pregnant and walking around with the equivalent of a hot water bottle strapped to your tummy [sweaty emoticon]

hope that every1 is ok and thinking breezy thoughts lol

luboo · 20/07/2006 06:37

Hi!
I'm new to this thread. Am due on 14th October so think I'm in the right place! I am sooo fed up today. I start work at 5am and have had practically no sleep all week because of the heat. I can't bear it for much longer - am really grumpy at work and feel like I could burst in to tears if someone so much as looks at me wrongly!

Gemmitygem · 20/07/2006 07:15

welcome luboo!

I'm due 12 Oct. Everyone here is very friendly, you're in good hands! Hope it cools down for you soon.. Is it your first baby?

OP posts:
luboo · 20/07/2006 07:35

Yep, it's my first baby - they've told us it's a girl but I feel like I can't committ 100 per cent to that in case it comes out a boy!! Has that happened to anyone here?
Feel like I have been a bit of a whinger what with 18 wks of nausea and serious heartburn since week 20!
Think I'm just knackered. Am going to 4 days a week from next week so hope that will help, then leave work altogether on 14th September.
Hope everyone else managed a better night's sleep last night. I tried going to bed with wet hair but didn't make much difference!

emmy01 · 20/07/2006 09:15
