I've just been listening the the news on our local radio station and one of the stories was about single mothers getting into debt because it costs £15K in the first year of your baby's life. How can it cost this much to have a baby? The radio was suggesting that people think they need over 100 'essential' items for a new baby.

Does anyone on here think they spent £15,000 on their first baby in the first year? If it is the case I'm not suprised people get into debt. We couldn't afford it.

Debz99 · 10/07/2006 16:50

15k I bloody well hope not LOL

staceym11 · 10/07/2006 17:12

there is no way that we could have spent 15k on dd as we only make 14k a year, and have to pay rent food mortgage etc etc etc so it wouldnt be physically possible!! i think all in all shes probably had about 6 grand spent on her, but i got a lot second hand etc, and shes nearly 2, it wont go up much more in the next few months!

this one will have even less as am hoping to swap most the clothes etc and have cot, sterilisers bottles plates bowls spoons highchair, walker, bouncer etc etc etc!

Evening all, well have finally been given crutches so may be a bit more mobile now (once i've worked out the best way to use them . I'm in Birmingham so fairly central.

Asked for my MATB1 today as was told i should get it any time between 20 & 24 weeks, the madwife said that you can't have it till your 26 weeks? work have already started asking for it, anyone else have the same dilema?

podglet · 10/07/2006 18:15

Hi all

£15K ???? No way Pedro (although if my FIL doesn't stop buying stuff soon it may come close ) I intend to get most stuff second hand + plus have been given LOADS of stuff!!!

Mummy2Toby - other end of the county to me then! We could meet in the middle (somewhere like Chelmsford?) if you liked? Unfortunately I have the same prob as NJ and can't drive (due to being registered partially sighted!) so it's public transport for me

Delia - glad you have finally got some help at last. How are you doing now? I wasn't going to be given my MATB1 until 28 weeks by my midwife but I had to see my GP for a note to be able to fly so he did the MATB1 at the same time. Work think I'm terribly efficient!

Empty washing basket? Not very often I admit (and there's only 2 of us)!

have fun tomo debbsy and all others having scans soon!

am a bit peeved, doesnt appear anyone looked at baby stuff yet, maybe have to think about ebay if there isnt enough interest on here, need to get this lot shifted and some money coming in or i cant buy any boy stuff, no spare cash going around.

(just re-read that and im not aiming this at you ladies, you are under no obligation to buy but everyone else out there should!!)

Mummy2Toby · 10/07/2006 22:28

Stacy - just a thought but have you thought about adding pictures to your for sale list? Also, mention on there that you are a regular poster (cos if people don't regognise your name they tend not to buy) I have a double buggy and my Mamas&Papas carrycot and seat unit on there as well as a nearly new double bed at the moment and have had not much interest ..... need the money though I am sure they will go eventually

MeAndMyBoy · 10/07/2006 23:37

Evening, Debbsy - happy birthday for tomorrow hun and fingers crossed for your scan - will be waiting with baited breath for you coming back to tell us how it went. You too Sarahlou - so exciting.

MATB1's I have had mine and handed it in and Mat leave is all booked and arranged - leave on 26th july. I had linked a site further down that produced a personalised calender and now it won't work - blooming government messing around with everything.

I think I am right with this? You have to inform your work no later than 15 weeks before the week your due date is in that you are PG and you need your MAT B1 to do that - I phoned the doc's up and the receptionist spoke to the midwife and she filled in the form and signed it for me while i waited in the waiting room - the usual madwife was off poorly.

I got a letter from the hospital today to tell me that the growth scan that they insist I need - due to the clerical error during booking in has been moved to the 8th Aug - unfortunately I will be out of the country on that day so cant make it. lol. Called the maternity clinic to rearrange and had an alternative date for 5th Sept - fine by me. Then they asked why I needed it said for growth scan and they moved it to a different consultant and to the 3rd week in Aug.

The people I work with have started a mini sweep stake (no money involved) to guess sex, weight, and date of birth - one chap has guessed I'll be 3 weeks late and it'll be 11lbs think I might of offended him at some point lol.

Right off to bed seeing as trampolining baby had me up at 4am yesterday - feel very sure that once they are born something will be happening about 4am most mornings - Ugh!!!

Night all.

podglet · 11/07/2006 08:04

happy birthday debsy - what a pressie, getting your scan too!! have fun later! what time is yours?

3.30 forever away... am watching the clock go tick tock very slowly since 7 this morning! have had to tell dp it's at 3 so he won't be late!

i'm another one decluttering.. managed to do some more reorganising yesterday, i can now fit a cot into ds bedroom and i don't have to sell the armchair in their, which has been a pain in the arse to even give away - nobody wants a free armchair! but like i say room now rearranged so that we can keep it.. just got to do the spare room now! busy busy busy at the mo, lots to do before newbaby arrives!

NatalieJane · 11/07/2006 09:46

Morning all

Happy birthday to Debbsy, and good luck for the two scans today

We bought everything new for DS (and have done/will do the same for this baby) and we spent no where near 15k, not in the first year.

Well, morning sickness made a come back last night, walking around tesco's, of all places. When is it going to stop???!

At least it is a little bit sunny today...! Hope everyone has a good day

All the best to those having scans today.

I'm with midwife at 1pm so will ask about MAT1B and see what she says. I thought you had to have it in to your employer 14 weeks before the due date and you can get hold of one anytime after 20 weeks.

I'm glad that the £15K thing is not true!

fatbetty · 11/07/2006 10:54

Happy Birthday Debbsy! Hope you have a great day and good luck with your scan.

Stacey, if you want to drop me an email maybe we can arrange to meet up sometime. My email is mhoyland at hotmail.com.

I'm so tired today as both of our kids somehow managed to end up sleeping in our bed last night. Our bed definately isn't big enough for that!! Feel horrible as the tv has been occupying the kids all morning. And I'm trying to find some kind of motivation to get a few things done. I'm so jealous of those of you who are busy little bees organising baby things and having a good clear out. Need to do that too, but need to light a fire under me first.

On a good note, I think I finally managed to get DS1 potty trained!!!! We haven't had an accident in ages and he is really proud of himself when he can go all by himself. Now just need to work on DS2 at some point.

staceym11 · 11/07/2006 10:57

good luck on the potty training fatbetty, having to look for a loo seat for madam as she hates the potty, she tellsme she needs a poo but wont sit on the potty, doesnt help shes got a boney bum and it leaves marks on her so it could be hurting, trying to get hold of a padded one!

Delia · 11/07/2006 11:49

Happy Birthday Debbsy, and good luck for the scan.

Podglet i'm feeling a bit more relief already have just looked at the pain killers this morning rather than begged for them! hopefully my doc will give me a fit to fly letter now so i can go to Canada at the end of the month (family wedding).

Fatbelly, like you i'am extremly jealous of all those organised people already sorted for their new arrivals, i have to sort out this tip of a study so that we can get going (a mamoth task at the best of times!) hopefully DH will beat me to it .

harrogatemum · 11/07/2006 11:59

£15k? Thats an awful lot of money!!! I thank God that we had lots of friends who had had babies before us as we needed two of everything, we borrowed one car seat, two moses baskets and the steriliser.

I have tried to work it out - we had to buy the double buggy (second hand £100), two cots (£500), bouncy chairs (£60), one car seat (£80), bottles (I guess about £30). The biggest expense in teh first year was nappies and formula (to all you breast-feeders, I did it for two weeks and then I needed to get some sleep - I just couldnt handle it anymore). That was about £20 a week for the nappies and £15 a week for the formula.

It seems like a lot now I add it up but nowhere near the £15k mark!!

Mummy2Toby · 11/07/2006 13:34

Afternoon everyone - happy birthday debsy and good luck with the scan and for sarahlou as well.

I need some advice please ds is in the big bedroom at the moment (all done out in lemon and patchwork farm decorations before he was born)and I am not sure whether to move him into the smaller room before this baby comes!
I feel a bit rotten moving him to a smaller room, but the bigger room is already decorated for a baby and the smaller room is already blue, so I could get some stickarounds (Balamory or something)to decorate the smaller room for him - that way it saves money.
My mum thinks this is a good idea as she thinks that the little girl will need a bigger room as they both grow up, but I am not sure about moving ds - sorry for long post, but his is keeping me awake at nights

NatalieJane · 11/07/2006 14:08

FB that is good news about the potty training, I know how frustrating it can be! Did you get the book I sent you?
