Thanks pass
We already shorten it to Gabe but my thoughts are that kids will be mean about just about anything, if its not their name its big nose/ears, too short/tall, fat/thin, pretty/ugly etc etc. Your right though, it used to be a good tease calling someone Gay but these days its fading fast and in the future it wont even be an insult, just another "norm" so good point, thankyou Smile

Jing I love Harrison and Rufus. I am quite a fan of surnamey names. But VQ never mind ducks, surely Gideon is out because of our beloved Chancellor Osborne?

Whoever said about birthing balls causing BH, I found that the first few times but now not so much, I think the right muscles have got used to it. Which I hope is good!

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 01:18

When we had a quite lovely mums group session after dd was about 10 weeks old (we have arranged mums groups over here and they are fab) our HV asked us for tips that we had be given that we would like to share. I shared one from my mum and it made the whole room go mushy so thought I?d share it here. Mum said that often night feeds are the most magical time because it is just you and your new baby and instead of always feeling fed up at being woken up you should enjoy those magic little moments. No one to interrupt your special time together to just gaze into each others eyes. Awww.

Think we're finally sorted on first and middle names now, first name is slightly unusual and middle name is more 'normal' it's a name I've always liked, looking forward to announcing it!

StuntNun · 13/10/2012 07:47

I'm not keen on our name James Andrew as I think it's nice but a bit dull plus we have a really common surname so it certainly won't stand out. DH wants to nickname him Jimmy (he loves Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix). I prefer Jay or Jazz (initials JAS) for a nickname so we'll see what sticks. But in the end I chose the names for DS1 and DS2 (with DH's consent eventually of course) so it's his turn and he is definite about James.

I'm not in favour of unusual names because of the endless comments I get. Even 'Oh that's a lovely name' gets wearing after the first fifteen years. I've had 'You sound like a film star', 'Bow to the princess', 'Why did your parents call you that?', 'Do you siblings have unusual names too?', all sorts. Now when people ask me I tell them Aurora means 'pretentious middle-class parents'. I suppose I like my name but just not the fact that everyone comments on it. No-one is going to say 'James, what a lovely name, my brother's name is James' are they? BUT times are changing now. With playgrounds full of Jaxons, Angels and Ronaldos I'm sure an unusual name will be much more accepted by their generation and won't necessarily be used for teasing. Actually I was never teased about my name, nobody could really come up with anything! Kia-ora was the worst I got but seeing as the line is 'We all adore a Kia-ora' it wasn't rich pickings for the bullies.

shelly I remember that show, and I just love the name even more, but DH says no.

pasties I totally agree about night feeds. I have fond memories with my first, and the night feeds are even more important with subsequent babies, as during the day there is always someone else after your attention.

ValiumQueen · 13/10/2012 07:53

I would rather my child was picked on for their name than their build, glasses etc. kids will always find something.

Well, as for me, DH went to get the paper, I felt the urge to push, he came home to see me on the floor with baby, then I woke up. Bugger.

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 07:57

My dd had her first ever swim lesson today, she is 18 months so went in with my dh, and one of the other dads there is miguel maestre, he is a tv chef over here :) i was mildly excited!

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 08:00

vq you had me going then!!

ValiumQueen · 13/10/2012 08:13

pasties it had me going too!

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 08:21

dreaming about actually pushing is quite full on!!! scary!

Peaky1 · 13/10/2012 08:21

It's all a matter of opinion isn't it? My baby will be called James and I have always absolutely loved that name. It's my Dad's middle name (who always wanted a boy and ended up with 3 girls, lol) and it's my great uncle's name who is buried in Normandy after dying fighting in the war. I think it's a good strong name that you can do a lot with for nicknames if you/he wanted and can't really take the piss out of it.

Times change and as do classroom registers (how many Ethel's, Mavis', Doris' etc did you have in your class?!). Some names stick around, some don't and some make come-backs. I'm not one for fashions and fads so I just say go with what you like and what you think they may like too! I'm just lucky I knew what name I wanted years ago. Girls names, however....

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 08:22

but exciting too!

MissMummy1 · 13/10/2012 08:27

I have my flu and whooping cough jabs this morning. Only took one arsey phonecall to get it sorted (after waiting 10 days for them to phone me back...)

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 08:34

yey mm1

TheDetective · 13/10/2012 08:41

Izzy if it isn't normal for you, then ring up and get seen. I wouldn't hesitate, I'm not a believer in 10 movements or count the kicks. I believe that we know our babies well enough to recognise when something isn't normal for them.

It probably isn't anything at all, but without a check over, you won't know and will sit worrying.

:)

TheDetective · 13/10/2012 08:45

The leggings did the trick. Back to full mobility!

Apart from the ever pained fanjo. Getting worried now!! Pain killers don't help :( I've had a good look and prod underneath but there is nothing unusual. I just don't know what I've done!! I've wracked my brain to come up with a diagnosis but got nothing at all!

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 08:52

detective a broken fanko, oh no - not good. izzy the detectives advice sounds spot on :) no one will be annoyed with you if you need more scans or checks.

Passmethecrisps · 13/10/2012 09:12

Morning. No sleep. Arse biscuits.

StuntNun · 13/10/2012 09:22

Peaky to be honest it's not the name so much as the popularity that I'm not keen on. I know so many people called James. Anyway it's DH's middle name and a traditional family name for the clan as well and it's already decided and agreed by both parties although my mum HATES it for some reason. I think she thinks it's narcissitic (sp?) because it's DH's name. I'm not having any name debate this time, I want to register the birth in the hospital for a change. My DS1's name was decided before he was even conceived but my mum put a spanner in the works in the hospital by insisting that he should have George in his name after my late grandfather. I liked my grandad okay, but not so much that I wanted to name my child after him. Also I didn't want DS1 to have four names becuase DH and I only have three names and I would be jealous. Also my other grandfather's name was Sheikh and that name would result in teasing in this country plus it seems nearly everyone in my family is called Sheikh. Then DS2 was called Voldemort for the first six weeks because we couldn't agree on a name. So my main criteria for names this time is that they will be decided in advance!

I'm having fun today: after six days of BH I have had what I think is a bloody show (pink mucous after no bleeding at all in pregnancy), period pain, backache and I feel like puking Grin. I know nothing might come of all this for a while but it certainly feels like things are going in the right direction. Baby moved downwards a few inches a couple of days ago so we'll see how things go. I had my whooping cough vaccine yesterday so let's hope baby James will hang on for another couple of weeks at least. It would also be really handy if he could wait until my inlaws are back from holiday on Saturday! I'm only 36+2 so I was thinking I'd have a little while to wait. Am going to pack my hospital bag today so I'll be ready (although DH swears he would be able to tell the difference between panty liners and maternity pads - can't remember who said they had that problem!)

stunt!! very exciting! I never had a bloody show or lost my mucus plug with dd.

Names are so difficult especially when family members stick their oars in!!

kirrinIsland · 13/10/2012 09:33

stunt ooh could be you next :) (sorry catbag )

Iheartpasties · 13/10/2012 09:39

or will vq be next. Do you think you are still in early labour vq?

SwissArmyWife · 13/10/2012 09:52

detective are you sure it's not just pressure from baby? I'm feeling a lot of pains down there too so I can sympathise.
I especially cringe when baby stretches out and I feel like my waters are going to break!

As for unusual names, I am rather guilty of using them! My DD is Fushia, (my favourite flower) changed the spelling so it didn't have the c in it, just in case! Her middle name is Lilly, which isn't so unusual but I've never had a bad comment about her name.
However with this one, his middle name will be James as it runs in both mine and DP's family as middle names , and DP is in fact a James. :)
I have a feeling people will be shocked he has such a 'normal' middle name to be honest!

SwissArmyWife · 13/10/2012 09:54

Oooh stunt definitely sounds like your body is getting ready, bit could be a while yet!
