Wishful I'm like you, no voming or MS here. It worries me that I have virtually no symptoms other than bloating and tiredness, bedtime is now around 9pm, but I'm trying to think positive.

A week to go until my early scan, wishing the time away.

7+2

imakestuff · 06/09/2012 07:36

Thanks enjay. If all goes well this will be dc1. I had an ectopic pregnancy earlier this year, but my early scan showed everything is in the right place this time so we are excited but still feeling quite nervous!

Actually I have a question for the group - is anyone else surprised by the general lack of attention from the nhs at this stage or is it just me? I had an early scan because of the previous ectopic, but when I went to my gp for the referral she didn't so much as give me a pamphlet. Supposedly the hospital I registered with is going to get in touch to schedule the next scan but I haven't heard from them yet. I'm capable of reading up on things myself, but I would have thought there'd be a bit more hand-holding!

Teapig · 06/09/2012 07:50

imakestuff, with my last pregnancy when I had a GP appointment I got very little too apart from a pregnancy magazine. When I had my booking in appointment with the mid wife they gave me a pack which had quite a lot of info in it.

I haven't contacted GP since being referred for first early scan to check it wasn't ectopic. I want to have next week's scan before contacting GP so hoping I won't have problems getting booked in on time if it's good news.

HaveALittleFaith · 06/09/2012 07:54

Congratulations then imake!

Re ante-natal support. My understanding from this thread is that it varies massively according to your GP practice and PCT! I saw my GP at 5 weeks, got my booking in appointment the following week. Midwife is lovely - I'm pregnant with DC1 and rather nervous because we'd been TTC for over 2 1/2 years. She said I could see her as much as I like/need, weekly if I want! Back a week on Tuesday for week 8 bloods and waiting for my scan appointment in the post. Now I've had my booking in appointment I know exactly when I'm due to have scans and see the midwife so I'm quite happy. Some people are being told they won't be seen until after their 12 week scan though!

HaveALittleFaith · 06/09/2012 08:06

Oh and at my booking appointment I got my ante-natal notes, my bounty pack, lots of leaflets, a magazine and (best of all I hope!) a couple PG tips decaf to sample and 50p off my next purchase. Tea had been making me sick, I'm going to see if I can tolerate decaf. Having said that, I feel really sick again today.

6+6!

imakestuff · 06/09/2012 08:18

Thanks teapig and havealittlefaith. Maybe I'll follow up with the hospital to check and make sure I've been properly registered. The nurses in the emergency pregnancy unit have all been very kind as they were with me through the ectopic and said I could call with questions - but I do feel funny ringing with every little thing I wonder about. Can I dye my hair? can I eat tofu? one cup of coffee a day is fine, right??

Is 6+6 six weeks and six days? If so I'd be 8+4!

Also is anyone else reading the book How not to f*ck them up?

HaveALittleFaith · 06/09/2012 08:33

Please, call me Faith! Yes I'm 6 weeks 6 days. It's probably just worth ringing. I like having the knowledge I can ring my midwife any time. If you look up the thread someone asked the hair dye question. One cup of coffee a day is fine. I dunno about tofu! I'm reading what to expect when you're expecting because while I know a lot about fertility problems I know little about being pregnant!

SneezySnatcher · 06/09/2012 08:44

Good morning. I'm a bit scared to say this, but I feel a bit less sick today and yesterday. I still don't want to eat, but I'm much better at getting up and about and I feel like I'm spending more 'quality time' with DD. I don't think I'm worried about it, as I'm either 9 or 10 weeks, so it is supposed to start easing off isn't it?
I'm very excited as we're taking DD to Edinburgh zoo at the weekend. I've never been, but I've heard good things!

imakestuff · 06/09/2012 09:01

I'm reading that too Faith. I know they've tried to localise it for a British audience - do you think it's accurate so far with regards to healthcare? That's actually one of the reasons I was wondering if I'm getting enough attention because the book talks about monthly checkups and all that! I wonder if that's what they do in the States (which is where I'm from but I've never been pregnant there!) I like that book because it tells you what's happening every single week.

birdbrain17 · 06/09/2012 09:12

Hi imakestuff welcome to the thread hope everything goes well for you this time. Just wanted to let you know if you don't want to drive your midwife at the hospital mad or your embarrassed there's a pregnancy hotline called Tommy's I think they have regular office hours so make sure not to call them too late their number is 0800 0147 800, I called to ask a couple of random things I didn't want to bother the midwife for and they were very helpful Smile

aufaniae · 06/09/2012 09:28

Cross posts imakestuff! i was just writing this when the phone rang ...

Beware with "What to expect ..." that it's written for the US market. The UK version (unless they've updated it from 4 years ago) has been edited for the UK market, so changing the word "diaper" to "nappy" without actually checking any of the facts it would seem.

So it mentions things like shopping around to select the right doctor or giving your baby to the night nurse in hospital if you want a break - not something they offered in my hospital! (whether you would actually want it or not is another thread entirely - and was recently!).

It also has a bizarre section where it basically tells you you should give your DC a "Christian name" which annoyed me I must admit!

So I would take any advice about the hospital / medical side with a large pinch of salt, I think it is not accurate at all on that front.

But it's fairly comprehensive and the pictures are lovely :)

aufaniae · 06/09/2012 09:38

I really enjoyed this book the first time round The Rough Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth

It's got a weekly development diary which is really interesting, and also the author writes a personal diary of what she's experiencing. Her style is wry, insightful, light-hearted and very British humour IMO. Not everyone likes it, I've seen others slate it! But personally I found it very informative as well laugh-out-loud funny in places, and it really cheered me up at a difficult time in my pregnancy last time round (we got a high probability for Downs. It was a scary time!).

I had lots of baby books! I enjoyed reading that one the most, and looking at "what to expect ..." for the pictures :)

Is it "What to expect ... " that has several pictures of the same woman in the nude as she progresses through pregnancy? I think is it? I remember being amazed at the change in colour of her nipples (pink to dark brown), I didn't know that happened! (And it did happen to me in the end!)

trying2bpos · 06/09/2012 09:59

Morning all,
FX today will be a good day for everyone. So sad to hear lola's news and on top of catch's too. This being pg thing isn't always easy huh?

imake I too have been surprised by differences in care but I know where I live this also varies depending upon your GP practice and even from year to year. I was really upset to hear catch had been to A&E twice and they made her wait for her scan to find out it was ectopic very scary and worrying not to mention the pain she was in.

The what to expect books are great but I don't believe the healthcare has been changed for the british audience, I lived in the states for 5 yrs and I think since they pay for their healthcare they get to see their OB/GYN dr quite frequently and have lots more scans probably because it all gets billed for! I'm not sure it means the healthcare you get when your pg in the UK is worse and in the US they don't get the after care we do so no MW or health visitor checks when you get home with baby. But I know it seems like a phenomenally long time before you actually get to see anyone when you 1st fined out you're pg in this country and even waiting between the 12w and 20w scans can seem like a life time.

trying2bpos · 06/09/2012 10:02

Sorry for all the horrible typos in the last post Blush. DS had us up for an hour last night and it's taking it's toll Confused. Starting to worry if we'll actually be able to cope with a newborn and a toddler!

trying2bpos · 06/09/2012 10:09

aufaniae don't think it's what to expect as I have fairly recent version and no colour pics, sounds like an interesting book though if you can remember what it was called. I liked 'the first time parent' sounds very similar to the 'rough guide' lots of practical info, some might say tmi (e.g. things you need for your perineum), on what you need before and after the birth but not really a pg book.

aufaniae · 06/09/2012 10:18

Oh, I'm getting it confused with something else then! Unless it's a different edition?

I'll have to dig out my old pregnancy books and have a look now!

ratbagcatbag · 06/09/2012 10:23

I have read zero books so far and after the sad news yesterday am absolutely panicking about my scan which I have got a date for yet. I'm just so worried something will be wrong and I'm
So excited :(

10+3

ratbagcatbag · 06/09/2012 10:24

Sorry should specify sad news in the group here.

aufaniae · 06/09/2012 11:07

OK, found the books, trying2bpos you were right!

The lovely pictures (and changing-nipple woman!) are in a different book:

Your Pregnancy Week by Week - what to expect from conception to birth by lesly Regan.

It's a really comprehensive book, written by the Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at St Mary's Hospital, London. It's got loads of useful info in it.

HiHowAreYou · 06/09/2012 11:11

Hi all, sorry to hear there has been more sad news.

I have been, and think i will be, keeping away from the thread for a bit because I've been bleeding quite heavily on and off, and I just don't feel confident I'll be staying here. I had a scan a couple of weeks ago and they saw a heartbeat which was a shock after all the blood, but reassuring, but the bleeding has been much worse since then so the reassurance didn't last long. I just feel like I can't relax.
Will update if I do have to be taken off the list, hope everyone else is feeling ok and coping well with any symptoms.

aufaniae · 06/09/2012 11:28

HiHowAreYou I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time of it, keeping fingers crossed for you xx

bigsista00 · 06/09/2012 11:35

trying2bpos · 06/09/2012 12:19

Thanks Aufaniae reserved it at the library to take a look.
FX for you HiHowAreYou thinking of you.

HaveALittleFaith · 06/09/2012 13:22

hihowareyou sorry to hear you're still bleeding and feeling negative about it. Try to hold on to that little heartbeat. Do you have a management plan?

Welcome to bigsista! How MN works....well, there's threads on all kinds of topics. Congratulations, you've found the right thread for your due date.
