Morning! Yay for the good scans lexi, thetramp and newyears. 9 days until mine, I am so impatient. No success with the maternity bras yesterday unfortunately although it seems I need a 38F or G now which is scary. I just haven't got the stamina for shopping on lunch breaks anymore. I'm sorry to hear about your gran jojo. I was devastated when I lost mine a few years ago.
manda DH and I are also trying to think of names with no religious connection but it is so difficult, especially with boys names. I love the name Sebastian which I don't think is religious but I'm not sure I can bring myself to use it. Does it sound "too much"? What does everyone think. There are lots of girls names I love but I have a hard time convincing DH.
Hope your little boy enjoys school possom. Apparently on my first day I enjoyed it so much my mum had a hard time dragging me out of there!
MrsR I hope you have a calmer day today and I'm glad the wasp is gone. I hate wasps after one stung me on the bottom of the foot on my to school.
Em I dreamt I had a little girl last night too and she was beautiful. I don't mind what I get but I secretly hope they get DHs lovely red hair.
I will definitely be trying to guess the sex at the 12 week scan and have been reading up on nub theory. If I can't tell then I might go for a private gender scan. Can you tell I am the impatient type? :)
Todays task - try to find a maternity denim skirt. The style and length I want doesn't seem to exist.

tiddleypompom · 21/08/2012 09:10

Not sure I can keep up with the pace this thread moves!

jojo I was very sad to hear of the death of your beloved gran :( Best of luck with those exams - what a tough week for you.

pinkpeony I too am hoping for a home birth and am looking into hiring a birthing pool. If that doesn't happen for any reason, there is a mwu in nearby Ludlow, which is also quite chilled out & focussed on natural delivery. My least favourite option would be hospital - partly as the 'local' is over an hour away (DS was born in just over an hour) and partly as I really want to avoid the almost inevitable interventions. We shall see - ultimately as everyone else says, however it happens is fine as long as baby is well.

hermione I stayed in a ward with another woman and her (third) baby overnight after ds was born. It was certainly a strange, bewildering experience and I didn't get much sleep - but I was comforted to be in the 'right place' if I needed help - which I did get the next morning after a painful night of b/feeding, when a lovely mw helped me out with the latch. I was also fed and actually quite enjoyed the next morning looking forward to visitors coming but spending some precious time gazing at my baby all alone :)

sundae you're going to need those nips, resist cutting them off :o

We have a boys name already, and a short list for girls. But I'm not telling, so there

manda hooray for 12 weeks!

Good luck rigby and all those taming older DCs - and have a happy day all. Sorry for epic post!

tiddleypompom · 21/08/2012 09:16

x post sheldon - I love sebastian, sadly vetoed by DH who is a Brummie and thinks it's too foppish. I disagree completely and think it's great for a baby and grown up man. Sigh. We're stuck with the old man 'proper bloke' collection of names :o

Re: biblical connections - this doesn't worry me in the least but try not to get too focussed on avoiding them as they get everywhere! My folks aren't religious at all (Dad very anti) but both mine and my brother feature in the old testament. There was a saint DS also - though we didn't know till after he was named (doesn't bother me anyway). I think unless you go for a real obvious one, people wouldn't immediately assume the connection. Advise against Jesus and Mary for the twins though manda :o

tedmundo · 21/08/2012 09:23

mrsR .. I imagined your boys to be older. Ah that is a tricky age and it sounds like a pretty normal day in a household with a 2 and 3 yr old. Hope it goes better today. Enjoy the baking!!

As I said yesterday, I LOVE my boisterous boys. I really do. I get so upset when some stranger (usually old ladies!) comment on them being a handful / hard work. I would not change their personalities for the world. They are a bit extreme but they love in such a strong way as they play too. Really loving boys!

And they both have saints names (DH is catholic) that are not in the top 100. There are 4 James' in ds class this year! It is a great name though.

I don't think we will find out the sex. Didn't with the DSs so seems a shame to do it this time. The genuine surprise is amazing too.

jojo .. I'm sorry for your loss. hope you are ok.

mandasand · 21/08/2012 09:40

Thanks you lovelies for the congrats on 12 weeks! Much better to focus on that than the scariness of the scan on Sat!

Tramp, Bathsheba made me laugh a lot! Yes, I really do have a problem with the biblical thing. At least it's Old Testament not New, which helps a bit. Oh, and I really like Betsy but I know the logical thing would be to name the baby Elizabeth so they have some choice to look a bit more grown up on CVs and change it to Beth or whatever else if Betsy is just too 1950s ? but Elizabeth in a jubilee years smacks of royalism, which also we'd like to avoid! Can't win! Maybe we should just go all new age and have names like River or Meadow, Sunshine or Cowpat (joke!)

DH likes Joshua for a boy. So far I'm liking Jude, Dylan, Finn type names for boys and Betsy, Millicent (=Millie), Matilda, Bella type names for girls.

Sheldon there are websites which help with non-religious names. I think all the boy names I like have a Welsh derivation for some reason! We have no Welsh connection so that feels a bit daft too. Hmm, maybe I over-think the importance of etymology/derivation?! To me (middle-class academic existence but firmly northern working-class origins) Sebastian sounds 'a bit posh' but it is a lovely name in itself.

Just lost an hour reading baby books - gah! Brain turning to mush! Must. Write. Book...

Happy Tuesdays, everyone!

JoJoBella84 · 21/08/2012 09:53

Thanks ladies, my oh and I like samuel, Joshua, jack.
Evelyn (Evie), Imogen, Isabella and Emily. All fairly normal not new age sensible names!!!

JoJoBella84 · 21/08/2012 09:54

Not Joshua, Jacob! I don't know where Joshua came from!!!

Sheldonella · 21/08/2012 09:55

Thanks tiddley, it is a good name isn't it. manda I am the same with northern origins too. This is why I'm wavering on Sebastian! DH can totally get away with it though. Ooh, and congrats on the 12 weeks! I love James but there really are lots of them around now. Still, for some reason I think a popular name isn't so bad for a boy. I would want a girl to have something less popular though.
MrsR and ted Your boys sound like lots of fun. I had several boisterous male cousins who were so much fun when I was little.
Oh I wish I was in the second trimester. Has anyone got their glowing boundless energy yet?

theTramp · 21/08/2012 09:56

Mand - I feel your pain. About the only traditional name I like is Henry, oddly enough but far too royalist. However, Hal, which is just a shortening really, is acceptable. MrM wouldn't stand for anything even faintly whiffing of royal, so Elizabeth would be out for us. Although I confess my girls name list is a little left field as well. My present favourite being Morgan.

In my class at school we had 3 Sarah's, 3 Melanies, 3 Johnathan's, 2 Andrew's and 2 James'. So someone ends up being Sarah or Johnathan and the rest get rechristened. I never liked my name when I was little (or rather I wanted a middle name that was more exotic - I was particularly keen on Bodaceia - says it all doesn't it) but I did like that I was the only person who had it. So I am determined to name our child something not on the favourite list, just to up the chances.

As an aside Bodaceia, or Bo, would be on the shortlist but a friend of ours daughter is called Bo. Curses!

JoJoBella84 · 21/08/2012 10:02

sheldon I'm two days into 2nd trimester and this morning I vomited in my bedroom sink! Energy levels are picking up but I still need an hours nap every day!!! I feel healthier though :)

mandasand · 21/08/2012 10:14

Morgan is nice, Tramp, and for a boy or a girl? Or is it more of a girl's name? Bo is lovely: can you think of another way of spelling it (Beau?) or another long name it could come from? My middle name is Claire, and we had about ten Claires/Clares in my class at school so I was very grateful that I was unique with my first name!

I really like Evie JoJo, and it's got the longer old-fashioned Evelyn too, which is what I'd want, ideally. But then it's on the popular list and like Tramp I'm going to try to steer us away from anything too popular. But, like you say, Sheldon I think it's more important (or easier?) for girls to be a bit different than boys?

I had resolved not to peek again at MN until I'd actually done some work but I had to share with you that I HAVE BELLY HAIR TOO! I was thinking (just a little bit) 'Oooh, you hairy beasts!' yesterday but I've just been to the loo and I have a modest forest of new 1cm hairs all over my belly (though more so, it seems, on the left than the right). I just didn't notice them because my body hair is translucent (I'm blonde) and you can only see it when the light catches it. Ahhh, I feel at one with the hairy rest of you now, hehe! Any pregnancy signs like this are cheering me up no end ? Smile

Sheldonella · 21/08/2012 10:17

Aww jojo sorry you are still being sick. My cousin told me her sickness dissapeared completely at 13 weeks so I hope this happens for you.
I also have belly hair but I have very dark brown hair so it is obvious. I plucked some out before my private scan last week Blush
My name is one of the most common names of the 80s and I was one of four in my year!

backwardpossom · 21/08/2012 10:19

I have dark hair, too sheldon so am looking a bit like a monkey. I was like this with DS, but not as early I don't think?! I also seem to be contending with a rather large and solid pot belly. Hmm... I'm only 11+1!

OP posts:
theTramp · 21/08/2012 10:33

I have PCOS so the hairy belly thing is the norm - it is frustrating, but that is what razors and hair removal cream were invented for. I was expecting glowing skin and better hair. Instead I am sneezing all the time, exhausted and consistently dizzy or out of breath walking up stairs that I hitherto ran up quite merrily. Gah!

Mand - Morgan for a girl. It could be a boys name, but I think it works better for a girl. I really like Inigo for a boy (Princess Bride reference and awesome english archetect of yore). MrM is oddly coming around to it. My mother was horrified when I mentioned it. My due date is date of MrM's dad's bday. He passed away just before the two of us met, so I think if a boy he is going to have a middle name of Brian. I think you can afford something a little more exciting to go with Brian...

Bo, Beau.. no matter howyou spell it you say it the same way. I think whether Socrates is a girl or a boy we'll have a pretty good list to choose from and the name we pick will suit.

sarahs999 · 21/08/2012 11:03

Hello all - I do read the thread every day but can't possibly keep up - I feel like I know pretty much what's happening with the regular posters though!

I have my nuchal scan on Friday and like you MandS I am really scared because I am so ancient (more so than you!). I desperately want to avoid any invasive testing but on the other hand if it's a really bad number I suppose we'll have to as we don't want to bring a very ill baby into the world. It's such a dreadful set of choices. I keep reading about maternal blood tests that are being developed that would tell you if you are carrying a baby with a problem but they always seem to be two or three years away! I'm sure in 20 years time people will look back and think how barbaric it was that we actually stuck needles into our wombs through our bellies to get amniotic fluid. Gah.

Anyway, trying not to think about it. I am suffering from bloated belly syndrome - yesterday I just looked enormous by the etime I got home from work - I'm sure it was the lentil salad I had for lunch. Am trying to avoid pulses today as I can't go around holding my belly in any more!

MrsRigby · 21/08/2012 11:10

Regarding names, just don't do what I did and name them after your bastard in-laws. We gave DS1 the father-in-laws name as his middle name. Now that they have turned into the in-laws from hell it makes me physically sick and I absolutely hate the name. The twats are VERY fucking religious too so that doesn't help.

Fucking in-laws Angry Angry Angry

And breath...

tedmundo James is not a catholic name is it?

mandasand my colleagues daughter is Zabi, apparently thats the French form of Elizabeth.

Also regarding names, I'm a BIG Bold and the Beautiful fan so I wouldn't mind calling the new baby Brooke, Ridge or Thorne.

theTramp I'm a BIG royalist, but the only name I find bareable is William and DH has vetoed that as his step brother is Billy. Besides, I don't think William Rigby sounds quite right.

mandasand no one had my name in school and no one I know of or their friends has my first name. Okay, I'll give you a hint, it can be used as a mans last name.

BELLY HAIR??? For gods sake, I've had belly hair since I was 13 - long dark thick black stuff. Unfortunately, it goes all the way down to my pubic hair so it just looks like I have pubic hair coming up my belly. I'll take your belly hair and raise you breast hair. Anyone have big long hairs sticking out their breasts? Yes, I have PCOS too.

Rainbowbabyhope · 21/08/2012 11:17

To those of you thinking about home births, I would definitely recommend hiring independent midwives. It really gives you the confidence to go for it with 100% dedicated one to one support (or two or three to one support!), especially in terms of safety (now also backed up by studies showing home being equally if not more safe - especially with second child). Although I wasn't able to have a home birth with DD, having my independent midwives with me in hospital was also amazing - you get to know them so well and they can give you support as birth partners which hospital midwives just don't have the time/energy to do. I have already hired them for this little one and probably going to aim for a home birth if I get that far.

tedmundo · 21/08/2012 11:19

YUK .. Just tried to take my folic and it stuck in my throat! Ended up yakking it out in a cat hair ball kind of way. Boys were a bit .. What the ... ??

I LOVE all these names. Evie is my goddaughter so that one is especially precious to me. Morgan (a boy!) is nephew.

sarah .. I have nt on Saturday and am so so scared. Not so much about Downs as I know we would never do anything of it for Downs, but more the Edwards syndrome. It doesn't help that the nature of my last miscarriage was put down to chromosomal disorder, so now I am paranoid. Sorry to be a downer here.

Will be glad to get to Saturday afternoon, just to now either way. The plus side of private scan is they tell you results same day. I am not good at waiting.

tedmundo · 21/08/2012 11:21

Mrs r .. It is a saints name so popular with Catholics. I really like it, but it is super common here and new baby would be lost in a sea of same named kiddies!

MrsRigby · 21/08/2012 11:24

Ah shite.

So not only does DS1 have the bastard in-laws name as his middle name, but his first name is Catholic.

Aaghhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa why did no one point this out to me before now.

Can you change your sons name?

sarahs999 · 21/08/2012 11:25

We're thinking about doing a private scan at the Fetal Medecine Centre if the NHS scan is ambiguous, just to get more detail and a second opinion. I've heard they're very good. It's just money really - we're already spending so much on my private specialist and that's probably going to continue throughout the pregnancy. Meanwhile we're supposed to be saving for my maternity leave!

Names wise we play the name game in the car all the time. It always starts off well but then descends into farce - last time with ended up with Hagrid and Dangermouse as the favourites (can you tell I have a 7 year old?!). WE're fine with girls' names but find boys names almost impossible. To me they're all either boring, naff or pretentious... why is that?

I'm another pcos person. I'm quite fair though, so I don't have the dark hair problem (though it's darker than it ought to be, frankly, given my celtic colouring). I just have ridiculous re-growth rate. Shave. All smooth. 12 hours later - oh look. Stubbly legs. So infuriating.

JoJoBella84 · 21/08/2012 11:27

manda the only problem I have with Evie, is that it would HAVE to be Evelyn, as our family name ends in a Y. And I'm not keen on names with the same sound!! So Evie really would have to be a nick name as pretty as it is!!!
But then that's just a small selection of names I need to buy a book!!!!

tedmundo · 21/08/2012 11:29

Oh god, I'm sorry Mrs R but I am laughing A LOT at your posts this morning!!

As for body hair, my youngest was stroking my leg today and said " ouch, spiky!"

tedmundo · 21/08/2012 11:41

sarah .. We have also looked at FMC if the stats on Sat are not good. But the Spire in Bristol is also considered a good one and the consultant I will see there Tim Draycott, is highly regarded. the risks with amnio are usually down to the experience of the medical team doing the procedure and Mr D does this day in, day out and apparently his stats are excellent. have heard the same about FMC too.

mandasand · 21/08/2012 11:41

Okay so I did a leeetle bit of work so am having a quick natter/peek?

Tramp Inigo is great! Love it - so different. I only know it from the architect - never met one in person! And, yes, it goes well with Brian! My FiL passed away last summer and his name is in the same league as 'Brian' (no offence intended!) We'll have that as middle name for boy. My DD has put in a request also for the traditional middle name on his side but I think he understands we have to do the FiL one first! No probs if we have two boys tho!

JoJo Noooo to rhyming first and second names, hehe! My list has the full name - first and second - written out so I can get the feel of the entire thing. Seems such an important task to be bestowing names on new little scraps of life before you know their personalities etc.

Sarah, we feel the same as you. Invasive testing not a nice thought, but we may well go down that route if we get a bad number. We don't think it would be fair to bring a very ill baby/babies into the world but I have to admit that I am also quite selfish. I want to be a caring mum, not a mum who is also a carer. I sense it's probably not the done thing to admit that, but I've seen people really really struggle in those kind of circumstances and it can take a life-long toll on the whole family.

MrsR Zabi is a very nice name. My first name is pretty uncommon too and I love it that way! No breast hair here ? you win!

We're scan buddies on Saturday, ted :-) Thankfully ours is first thing so we get it out of the way. May persuade DH to go pram window shopping if everything looks to be okay, tho I understand the NHS results can take a while. I really want to see them move. They were totally static at 8-week private scan! Good idea to go private for immediate results to put your mind at rest. I hate waiting too.
