Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

I think our nursery is £33 or thereabouts a day, but I don't need to provide anything. I don't have much change from £800 PCM.

Boutique, the chances are everything is grand but it is totally understandable to be worrying and lord knows I am exactly the same. Are you still suffering from "morning" sickness?

Happy - I nearly had a heart attack when I started loooking at childcare costs in London. We started wondering whether it was worth one of us just giving up work entirely! A full time live out "Nanny" costs in the region of £25k per year down here.

I might move to Aberdeen ......is it nice up there Smile?

theboutiquemummy · 02/08/2012 19:56

squealy Hi i think you are right there got to see the consultant next week so fingers crossed looks like I have a low placenta
Still got the morning sickness in the evening now SadBlush and I thought it had gone

New symptom really bad headaches anyone else got that ?

DiscoDomina · 02/08/2012 21:07

I thought that would be the case ladies about the cost of childcare........ I'm not that Shock kinda what i expected Confused. I already knew it wouldn't be worth me going back to work full time or even going back to my current job. In all honesty i hope it is going to be the perfect opportunity to try and carve out a career i want as opposed to the lousy job i do just to pay the bills! Not sure what i want to do but i would like to start a part time masters - but we will see Hmm

Birdies · 02/08/2012 21:11

Not headaches but sometimes feel really sick at night. Though could be something to do with the trifle and chocolate?! Actually when I eat fattier food I do get that sicky feeling back that I don't get when not pregnant.

Anyway, after saying I couldn't feel movement I sat and concentrated and got 4 mini kicks - pretty sure that's what they were! So that'll keep me going for a bit. Don't want to make anyone who hasn't felt anything jealous though - I am nearly 19 weeks so it was about time (and not sure re placenta position yet).

happyhow · 02/08/2012 21:30

Aberdeen is really nice but it is grey... Everything is made of granite but it's small enough that it feels a bit like a town. I love it. Came here for Uni 9 years ago and I won't leave easily!!

I'm working out my salary to decide if it's better going back 3, 3.5 or 4 days. It's SO confusing. It only seems to make a £25 difference a month between 3 and 4 days. At the moment i'm thinking 3.5 days just to be in the middle!

MamaMary · 02/08/2012 21:31

theboutique I've been having quite a few headaches too - and they're hard to shake off. It does worry me as I developed high blood pressure last time I was pregnant, so if they continue I am going to have to visit my GP/ midwife. I'm reassured to some extent as I've no swelling (yet).

RE childcare, my childminder charges £30 per day and she doesn't do half days (the last one I had did - she charged per hour which was great, but she was less flexible in other ways). I often ask myself if it's worth working as you're spending so much of your salary to pay someone to look after your child. With one child, yes it's probably worth it, but when I have two I really don't know what I'll do!

Happyhow, glad to hear I'm not the only one eating an entire bag of sweets - though mine are Fruitella! Couldn't resist them when I was picking up some groceries for dinner.

Brugmansia · 02/08/2012 23:19

I've been getting really bad headaches too, often lasting all day. I've been taking paracetamol often it hardly takes the edge off.

Can't really face thinking about childcare and the likely cost in London yet. Fortunately my work is pretty flexible about part time working. I currently like the idea of working a 7 day fortnight, so 3 days one week and 4 the next. No idea yet either how long I'll take off.

Lora1982 · 03/08/2012 06:09

aaarrrgghhh my face has exploded!! and ive found stretchmarks. this is NOT a happy friday.

MarasmeAbsolu · 03/08/2012 10:17

Lora - remind of me last time round got to 38 wk, very smug, nice neat bump, no stretchmarks.
I was very smug - and well pleased with my BioOil (greasy pile o' shite) then DD decided to never descend and stayed in until 42wks.

Let's just say that not long after my smugness, I was well gutted to wake up as strippey as the tiger. The extent of the damage was only revealed after the birth :)

But to be honest - it does fade away (and does not matter that much in the grand scheme of things)

Birdies · 03/08/2012 10:23

Lol marasme that was just the same as for me! Spent a tonne on bio-oil and was very pleased with myself at 38 weeks for having no stretchmarks - money well spent I thought! Then they appeared with a vengeance! All around my lower tummy, angry and red. They're back already now but they did look like they had all but disappeared after a year.

Anyway, I agree I don't really care about the stretchmarks, veins, saggy boobs etc, it's so worth it!!

Birdies · 03/08/2012 10:26

Ps some might disagree, but personally I would just save your money rather than buy expensive stuff like bio-oil. People who say it works may never have got stretchmarks in the first place. I think just a nice moisturiser like the Aveno coconut oil from Boots will be just as effective (or ineffective!). Will at least help to make bump feel more comfy as it grows anyway.

PricklyPickle · 03/08/2012 11:25

Ooh i already have aveeno oil, i use it to bath my hedgehog (no that's not a euphemism). DP days i spoil him by using it, now i have an excuse to buy more Smile

Lora i bet you made about 20 ladies check their tummies this morning in a panic for stretch marks!

SquealyB · 03/08/2012 12:02

Lora your post made me laugh! Unfortunately, I already have stretch marks due to the fact that I lost a lot of weight last year so no doubt they will return.

I am ultimately suspicious of bio-oil etc and just not sure that there is any evidence that they work. Will be sticking to my normal routine. My skin is way spottier than normal too.....but my hair is looking awesome. Swings and roundabouts I guess.....

Prickly one of my friends has a pet hedgehog and spoils him rotten too! They are terribly cute.

happyhow · 03/08/2012 12:03

I'm covered in stretch marks from puberty - arms, breasts, tummy, hips. I'm expecting quite a few coming my way. There's no way to prevent them. I'm just using Sanctuary body butter to keep the skin soft.

CreepyCrawly · 03/08/2012 12:10

I've had stretch marks since about week 15. They're tiny though and all around my belly button.

My stomach seems to be growing by the hour! And I've started wearing my maternity jeans. They're the ones with just a band around the top, and I think the baby will have to find another way out because I never want to take them off! Comfiest things ever!

Birdies · 03/08/2012 12:33

Lol "bath my hedgehog" Prickly! I did wonder if you meant your nu-nu! Mind you as we get nearer the end I can bet we are all talking about how to tidy up our 'hedgehogs' before the big day arrives haha! (would recommend not doing it yourself, for the main reason that you have to use a mirror as belly too big, and you'll get a fright as to what it looks like by then!!!).

DiscoDomina · 03/08/2012 13:17

I think i agree with you happyhow there is no way to prevent stretchmarks, just keep the skin as hydrated and supple as poss to minimise. I have plenty already (from puberty yo yo dieting over the years), and they do fade when weight settles down again!

MarasmeAbsolu · 03/08/2012 13:21

Hmm bathing hedgehogs.... Grin

but, not kidding this time... do you really bath hedgehogs? do they like it?
[genuine interest]

otherwise - one cream worth buying: mama mio "boob tube"
and definitely buy a tube of Lansinoh if you plan to BF (great for cracked nipples - costs a bomb, but only a tiny amount needed)

salt1 · 03/08/2012 13:43

how funny, came on here just to share about finding my first stretch mark and you have beaten me too it! however applied bio oil last night and has now disappeared. palmers cocoa butter is also good x

BuntyCollocks · 03/08/2012 13:54

I was exactly the same, marasme! 42 weeks, not a flicker of a stretch mark - a few hours after I had DS I had a shower and was horrified at the state of my stomach! They have faded, and not returned as yet (touch wood), but I was also religious with bio oil.

Bag of shite.

OP posts:
Pascha · 03/08/2012 14:23

Same here. Small bump last time, no stretch marks til after the birth. Not many though. I really hope i get away with it this time but i'm already bigger at this point than I was by about 28 weeks last time so not very likely I fear.

Complicated24 · 03/08/2012 15:10

Had first appt with Consultant today and was told I would be induced at 39 wks because of my age. That would mean being induced on New Year's Eve. Suddenly brought it home to me that I might be a mother this year. What a lovely but quite scary thought. I have also been put on a daily dose of aspirin as my age also puts me at high risk of pre-eclampsia. Is anyone else on aspirin? Good news is that my iron count is really good (15) so can stop taking pregnacare which I think was making me even more constipated. TMI. Sorry!!!

octanegirl · 03/08/2012 18:20

I had my gender scan today. He's a boy! Very conclusively. Huge Willy! Heehee. DP was extremely happy about that, say he gets that from him!

I have an anterior placenta so I guess I won't be feeling any kicks for a while though :(

PricklyPickle · 03/08/2012 18:34

Congrats Octane! How lovely. Team Blue are catching up with team Pink. Now you get to do some serious shopping.

Birdies What is going to happen to my downstairs? Are you talking about the lady garden or the actual nu-nu? (Sorry that was a definite TMI) I'm a bit Shock

Marasme Yep you can bath hoggies, sometimes mine needs as he has a bad habit of running through his poo or it if he gets a touch of dandruff. Not in deep water though, he likes to be able to paddle, but some like a swim.
