Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

Hope you're ok allchik, let us know when you're back. Hopefully all is fine though, my midwife said it's from 24 weeks when you need to start taking note of them.

godzookey · 17/08/2012 18:57

hi everyone,
Echo-ing Birdies -keeping everything crossed for you allchik

Woody - am with you on there's so much to learn front - it's my first one too and have signed up for NCT classes as everyone says what a great support it is.

Has anyone been watching that Midwives programme on BBC 2 - i really wish i hadn't, my boss told me to and now it's become compulsive viewing but WAY too much detail for me to cope with!!

I give it another couple of weeks and then i think i'm going to have to give in and get some maternity trousers - had to completely squeeze myself into a pair of size 14 trousers today - surely if too tight then suffocating baby??!!Grin

allchik · 17/08/2012 19:18

Thanku all so much!bubs is fine, took a while to find hb as was tucked deep down!Just really scared me!naughty baby!!!x x x x

NeedlesandPins · 17/08/2012 19:36

Allchik ive been exactly the same as you!!! My MW couldnt find hb straightaway and i panicked too as not felt anything for few days. my MW said cos bubba still very small Smile

CreepyCrawly · 17/08/2012 20:11

So pleased everyone is having good news after worries. It must be so frightening.

I'm needing someone to slap me today. Overly emotional because DH is going away for 4 nights in 2 weeks time. I'm bloody dreading it, I hate when he's away for a few hours. I'm not good at being on my own, and it'll be longest we've been apart since we've been together.

mrsbugsywugsy · 17/08/2012 20:12

Pascha I looked at the birthing centre option but the nearest one is 40 minutes' drive away, in the countryside. The nearest hospital to it in an emergency would be the one 5 minutes from my house. So it doesn't make much sense to me to go there.

allchik so glad everything's ok, and glad your bleeding wasn't anything worse, Tugs

i am dithering about antenatal classes, it seems like an awful lot of money. I may go with an alternative local antenatal class instead of NCT, it is a similar price but was recommended to me by a friend. There is also a local homebirth group that the midwife recommended.

Godzookey definitely go for the maternity jeans! I now have a proper pot belly, I can still wear my leggings and loose trousers but have given up on jeans. I think it's good to be at this in-between stage in the hot weather as you can get away with floaty dresses and leggings.

Pascha · 17/08/2012 20:37

My MLU is in the main hospital one floor away from labour ward. I did end up transferring last time due to some bleeding so I'm glad it was really. If the MLU wasn't running at capacity now I might well choose it again but as it is I think I will have a better experience at home knowing that I will have one-to-one care with a dedicated midwife.

Tugstonia · 17/08/2012 21:33

Fab news allchik! :)

theboutiquemummy · 17/08/2012 21:36

So pleased for all the good news x

had a bad day today have been bitten by a horsefly went to the Drs told waspeeze couldnt get any meanwhile hand is swelling up n I'm getting hot n bothered in the heat
Pharmacy was shit asked for alternatives but no-one would recommend anything in the end settled for calamine lotion n lanacane sparingly I might add.

Is it any wonder we get so uptight being pregnant when everyone is to afraid to voice an opinion in case it harms the baby !

On the plus side the little trump is moving around nicely now n sometimes I can feel him/her

Have chosen names, but won't be going to antenatal classes because of the birth situation Sad

When do we start to blossom ?

allchik · 17/08/2012 22:17

Boutique escape the heat....move to Yorkshire Wink

theboutiquemummy · 17/08/2012 23:42

happyhow · 18/08/2012 01:05

I need to post more... Keep getting kicked off!!! Angry

Birdies · 18/08/2012 09:20

Who was it that recommended the nipple sucker (aka Medela thingy for flat nipples?!). Was it you bunty or someone else? I have a question for you!

BuntyCollocks · 18/08/2012 10:42

Was moi! The nipple sucker was lansinoh, the nipple formers are medela. Fire away!

If anyone's interested and lives in the northeast there is a Babybay bedside cot going dirt cheap on eBay because they are not willing to ship at all. No good for me since I live approx 280 miles away but someone will be getting a bargain if they are reasonably close. They are £200+ brand new.

NeedlesandPins · 18/08/2012 10:58

tugstonia i was plagued with UTI's all through my first two prgnancies and for this one i am now considered 'high risk ' as i went into premature labour both times too and almost had DD at 28 weeks.

Just make sure your MW keeps an eye on them and always do mid-stream urine samples Smile

Birdies · 18/08/2012 10:59

Thanks pascha, I live near there! Hmm though got my heart set on a bednest, wonder what the difference is.....never bid on eBay before, are you meant to leave it til the last minute?

Birdies · 18/08/2012 11:05

bunty right here goes! So, last time I had what I would call 'shredded nips' (would use smiley face here but it was more painful than the actual giving birth!). Ended up so sore I had to stop and I really want to try for 6 months again but without all the pain. So, the nipple sucker looks ideal for me as I'm hoping if I can stop getting cracked nipples etc in the first place by getting my boobs shaped a bit better for a good latch, I might be ok.

But..how do you use it in practice? Eg if you're out and about trying to breastfeed, do you actually use the sucker in public under your top? And also when baby is first delivered and put on chest, I can't see me using it then either?! Just wondering really how it can be used all the time as opposed to just in private at home?

Pascha · 18/08/2012 11:23

pm'd you birdies. Check your inbox ^^

MarasmeAbsolu · 18/08/2012 11:57

Really keen to hear more about bednests - anyone had one first time round?

Tugstonia · 18/08/2012 12:02

Thanks Needles. How premature were your two? Must have been so worrying. Did you bleed with your UTIs? I have a weird feeling mine's going to be premature, don't know why. I hope I'm wrong!

Pascha · 18/08/2012 12:11

Yes I'm interested in info on Bednests too.

mrsbugsywugsy · 18/08/2012 12:24

Pascha I live 5 minutes away from a big teaching hospital, but there's no MLU. I am considering a homebirth mostly because I will be so close if anything did go wrong. I think the hospital would be a great place to be if I need medical intervention, but people I know who have had 'normal' births there tend to be pretty much left to their own devices.

boutique poor you! I seem to be getting bitten more these days, I wonder if the insects like the smell of the pregnancy hormones in our blood?

Pascha · 18/08/2012 12:44

We are about 15 minutes away if necessary so close enough I think.

I have a problem now, we watched a dvd last night which had a traumatic birth story included (not the main event) and on the back of that DH has said to me that we need to talk about the whole home birth thing because he's not all that keen on it. I think he's imagining the worst happening. I need to find some resources online to show him that home birth is as safe if not safer than hospital because of the one to one care.

I don't want to give it up but I'm not about to alienate him over it either.

BuntyCollocks · 18/08/2012 13:21

birdies I think it's more a home thing tbh. The nipple formers, though are relatively discreet (apart from making you slightly resemble madonna in the conical bra years ...), so I wore them out and about.

The other thing to think about is maybe investing in a gold pair of nipple shields. I know a lot of midwives are very anti them, but the lactation consultant we had said they could save a breastfeeding relationship, and didn't damage milk supply. However, they're no use until the milk comes in.

Tbh, the best thing for out and about is basically an exaggerated latch - hand in a 'c' with thumb one side of your nipple, pointing up, fingers the other side, and squeezing (gently!) so that your nipple is more pointed. Roll baby on chin first and a deeper latch is hopefully attained. It is tricky to get the hang of, but once you do, it's the work of seconds and v discreet.
