Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

Welcome woody! You've been lucky avoiding the sickness! I was sick again this morning for the first time in about a month, but I think it's more to do with the anti-biotics I'm on. Hearing the heartbeat is lovely isn't it? I have my 20week scan two weeks today, the 29th.

Quite glad to read about not needing a carry cot. Been trying to get my head around all the available pushchairs etc. There's a few I've liked online and then when I've seen them in real life, I don't like them as much. I have my heart set on a green one though (silly I know!). We do have a crib for when the baby is first born though, but that's only because it's been in my family for a few generations now, which is nice.

Just looked at bednests on google, they're lovely!

bealos · 16/08/2012 00:34

Oh, the bed nest is sweet. Don't think they existed 7 years ago!! It's a bit like how I used to have the moses basket set up. Very handy for those semi-concious moments.

CreepyCrawly · 16/08/2012 08:50

Is anyone experiencing or having any tips for the inability to sleep at night? It's driving me crazy now. I'll wake up every couple of hours in the night and only really have a deep sleep just before I'm due to get up.

Been like this for about a week now and I'm exhausted. I know a baby will keep me up at night come January, but I was hoping to catch up a bit before then! I always feel to guilty to phone in sick to work, even though they're always fine and no one else thinks twice about it. I'm just so worn out :(

Lora1982 · 16/08/2012 08:59

i feel your pain i couldnt sleep til 2am then woke at 4. im able to sleep at about 5pm when im at work though praps thats the key...

MarasmeAbsolu · 16/08/2012 11:37

re sleeplessness - what I do (when I wake up) is:

  • if restless legs: I quickly shower them with ice cold water and elevate them when back in bed.
  • if carpal tunnel ache - nada, sadly :(
  • a trip to loo, even if for just a few drops
  • a small glass of water with a few drops of bach's remedy (low grade dehydration stops me from sleeping, and overactive mind often kicks in)
  • a spray of lavender mist night thingy on pillowcase
Birdies · 16/08/2012 17:37

Marasme I got terrible restless legs in my 3rd trimester last year so was interested to read your solution. It drove me mad so I will be jumping in the shower at whatever hour to see if cold water works!

Anyone else weeing a lot in the night (in the loo i mean, not in bed :)). I remember this from last time and I'm up 4 or 5 times at the mo.

CreepyCrawly · 16/08/2012 18:02

Thanks for the tip Marasme. Will definitely try them. I'm just exhausted in general I think, I seem to be doing more than my contracted hours each and every week and then having no time to get those hours back. It ends now! Counting down the days until my week off mid September!

I am Birdies. I'll go to the loo before bed and not drink when I get into bed then I'm up a couple of hours later for the loo. Which obviously doesn't help with the lack of sleep.

This baby had better be cute! Grin

Tugstonia · 16/08/2012 18:16

What a stressful afternoon. Went to the loo and discovered loads of dark blood in my pants. Obviously shat myself and was full of doom, rang midwife who told me to go to A&E, so I went to UCH because it's nearest to work. They were great and I was seen v quickly and sent to maternal fetal assessment unit. Doc didn't do a scan but listened for heartbeat with doppler and when she found it I cried my eyes out. She suspected a vaginal or bladder infection and tried to take a swab but it was absolute AGONY when she tried to put the speculum in - never experienced pain like that before with a smear. So did a swab of what she could get to and sent it off for testing. Have to call in 2 days for results. She was convinced it's Bacterial Vaginosis though (which I've had before years ago but never with bleeding) and gave me Metronidazole antibiotics to take. Has anyone had BV or taken metronidazole before in pg? I've read up about it and it's considered safe in pg but I'm now worried in case it isn't BV and is coming from the womb. Wish I'd asked for a scan now but I was a hysterical mess. I'm still bleeding now :(

mrsbugsywugsy · 16/08/2012 18:41

Tugs that sounds awful, so pleased they found the heartbeat. Hopefully someone will be along with some advice. if it was bleeding from your womb that wouldn't explain the pain when they tried to take the swab, would it?

Lovely to hear about everyone's scans. I had my 16 week midwife appointment yesterday and it was all fine. We heard the baby's heartbeat which was lovely. Can't wait till the 20 week scan although mine's not till mid september when I'll be nearly 22 weeks (boo!), because I'll be on holiday when I'm 20 weeks (yay!).

I've also been suffering a little from backache, although mine seems to come on at the end of a day of sitting on a chair at work. Walking or gentle yoga stretches seem to make it better.

Is anyone else thinking of having a homebirth? I discussed it with the midwife and she was very encouraging, provided that I remain low risk, even though it's my first.

woody2313 · 16/08/2012 19:12

Thanks for the welcome CreepyCrawley. There is so much good advice and tips on here - so much to buy and so much to learn, it can be incredibly overwhelming. Mr Woody is very relaxed and would happily but everything we need about a week before the EDD Shock but I want to use this time off to research and then start buying everything we need. I have no idea about prams/ buggies, other than the travel system idea looks most suitable for us. I have read loads of reviews but think I need to get into a shop and see things for myself rather relying on the internet. Confused

woody2313 · 16/08/2012 19:14

Hope you are ok Tugstonia - sounds like you are having a rough time of it

bealos · 16/08/2012 22:18

Tugstonia - go back if you want a scan. They will always listen to you, esp. if you are still bleeding and want reassurance. What's your nearest hosp?

SquealyB · 17/08/2012 00:13

Tugs that sounds so scary! If you are still bleeding I would go and get a scan at local hospital. Modt important thing is you and your baby so do whatever it takes to get the reassurance you need. Hopefully they will be helpful. Hope it all goes well

Tugstonia · 17/08/2012 06:24

Thank you ladies. Only a small amount of brown discharge this morning but having some pains now. I'm seeing my midwife at my GP's surgery this morning for 18 week check-up and will ask her to book me a scan. Local hospital is King's and they've been great so far so if mw can't get me a scan I'll just turn up and ask for one.
Hope you're all ok, welcome to Woody and other newbies :)

woody2313 · 17/08/2012 09:21

Has anyone signed up for antenatal classes yet? A lot of our friends have gone for the NCT classes during their pregnancies; I just wondered what the advantage is of going to these rather than the NHS ones?

woody2313 · 17/08/2012 09:22

Hope everything goes ok with the MW this morning Tugstonia Smile

MarasmeAbsolu · 17/08/2012 11:06

Good luck Tug

Woody I will not bother with classes this time round. Only did NHS last time, and I wish they had been going more in detail about when things go wrong. I know they are not aiming to scare the shit out of you, but I would rather have been warned than have to find so much on the go, gleaning info from random registrars.

I cannot remember who had a bednest last time - how did you get on with feeding a newborn from lying position? I remember it requiring a bit of "handling" for good latch when sat on Ikea Poang feeding chair with DD

Birdies · 17/08/2012 11:21

woody welcome! I think the general consensus from people on here who have been to them is that NCT classes were really good. They do go into detail but more importantly you have a ready made group of peers for your little one when they are born and like-minded mums for you to get together with (though that may be the case with other classes too).

I didn't do the NHS antenatal ones as seemed daft doing both so can't comment on them, but I felt like a paid for class like NCT might be better quality.

SquealyB · 17/08/2012 11:59

Hi woody and welcome. This is our first so we have booked in for local NCT classes as loads of people said they were very good and worthwhile.

Word to the wise they book up VERY fast so I would get in touch with your local NCT branch asap if you do want to go to one.

Started buying more stuff now after hearing the heartbeat at 16 weeks. Have now managed to get:

  • travel system
  • cotbed
  • moses basket
  • changer/dresser

Still a fair amount of stuff left to get but feel like we are getting there.Such a wonderful and legitimate reason to shop Grin.

Has anyone else started frantically nesting or am I a total weirdo? Have spent the last few weekend, cleaning, sorting and planning.

allchik · 17/08/2012 12:00

Hello all,Im having a bit of a melt down. For 10 days I have been feeling almost constant movement/flutters...but havent felt anything for 24hrs now. Have tried drinking cold water, lying on left side etc.Rang midwife who said as baby is still small it may be tucked in a corner. They put me through to my hospital who said I can go in to hear t heartbeat.Just going to wait for hubby, prob (hope) freaking out ovr nothing....hating this feeling!x

SquealyB · 17/08/2012 12:10

Hi allchick .....ah the pregnancy freakouts, unavoidable but terrifying!

Just wanted to offer some support and say that I am sure the midwife is right and your little one is just having a quiet day resting in the corner. Hope you get to the hospital to put your mind at ease and everything is ok.

Tugstonia · 17/08/2012 15:00

How are you doing allchik? Hope all went well at the hospital. I'm sure your little bubbakins is just have a little rest :)

I'm just back from another epic hospital visit. MW and doc were great and reckon it's a UTI causing all this pain and have given me yet more antibiotics. Normally avoid antibiotics like the plague and now I'm on two different types! Oh well just have to get on with it. Doc couldn't find a reason for the bleeding though and told me to keep an eye on it and go back if it gets worse.

Woody we've signed up for NCT too after hearing v positive things from friends and family.

Stuff-wise we haven't bought anything yet but DP has been researching pushchairs/travel systems. We don't have a car and live in London and will be using public transport or walking everywhere and various friends have told us to get a Maclaren. Only thing is not sure if the baby can face me/DP or just faces outwards? Also want to get some kind of sling.

Hope everyone is ok :)

allchik · 17/08/2012 15:22

Thanks Tugs n squealy, just waiting for hubby to get home then Im going, sure everything will be fine but need to get it checked or Il go mental! Tugs,so glad ur baby is well, god knows what u must have gone through! This pregnancy lark is stressful!xx

woody2313 · 17/08/2012 15:27

Thanks everyone. We have provisionally put our names down for our local NCT course so will get ourselves signed up now!

Pascha · 17/08/2012 15:42

Allchik hope its all ok for you. I'm sure its fine, regular movements aren't expected for a few weeks yet I don't think.

I'm not doing NCT because there isn't a group closer than 30 minutes away for me. I did NHS classes the first time round and I would say its probably worth it just for all the info about local services and what to do/who to call when labour starts. Other than that its not so important. I won't be doing them this time as I pretty much know everything they said already from before.

MrsBug I'm having a homebirth if I can. I would like to avoid the hospital unless there's no other choice. We lost 2 birthing centres last year so all the maternity services are under 2 hospitals and only one is close to me. The MLU there is a nice unit but I would hate to be there at full capacity and this is what its looking like.

I saw the MW today, all fine and made an appointment for 4 weeks time.

Now I'm going back out to get my son from nanny's house. Its too too hot here, I'm melting...
