Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

Oh yes. The scan was lovely, all organs present and correct, all measurements normal. Got lots of pics including a very clear one of the foot with all the little bones standing out Grin! I am about to text mum a picture, I may put one on my profile.

Pascha · 14/08/2012 17:56

Marasme I hope your scan was good too.

godzookey · 14/08/2012 18:54

Evening Ladies,
Congrats to everyone who's had great scans and been able to see their baby clearly!

Pascha i'm up for going to the Baby Show - haven't looked for ticket prices yet but there's bound to be 2 for 1 deals on Lastminute etc - am thinking of going with the MIL and her big fat wallet... fat chance more like hahaha!!!

I am really keen on the UppaBaby travel system but need to start saving those pennies but am convinced will get everything else pretty much second hand bar that and the car seat!

Pascha · 14/08/2012 19:52

Just checked its £13.50/£14.50 single and £25/£27 couple depending on the day. No discount codes about yet, latest I could find is for the one in Manchester at the end of august.

MarasmeAbsolu · 14/08/2012 20:28

All was good and in place, thanks Pascha
A bit nerve racking - amazing how things have moved on technology wise in term of equipment since last time though. I have still not got my blood markers back, so was quite worried. The sonographer took very detailed measurements. DD had some very minor anomalies, so got that checked too, and all is well.
Got lovely pics to show DD :)

Otherwise, it is definitely carpal tunnel :( hope it will not get worse.

Brugmansia · 14/08/2012 20:41

I'm in London and will mostly be on public transport and am hoping to be able to use a sling only as much as possible. I've been offered a wrap to use at first and will see what I like best out of the ergo, manduca, beco and boba 3g once the baby's here. Quite fancy a mai tei with pretty fabric too.

I've realised though that practically I will need a pram or buggy of some sort too and my mum has offered to buy it's one, so the last few days have been taken up with obsessive pram research. The more I look the more options there seem to be and the more confused I've become.

I know light and maneuverable is a priority. What I can't work out is whether having a carry cot option is worth having or something like bugaboo bee may work for me.

Pascha · 14/08/2012 20:48

Don't get a carrycot, get a suitable from birth buggy. Carrycots are only useful until baby wants to see a bit and sit up and they take up space.

Brugmansia · 14/08/2012 21:04

That was what I was thinking, particularly if manage to mostly use a sling for the first few months.

happyhow · 14/08/2012 21:51

I liked the iCandy ones but my friend said today they scratch really easily and can be heavy. I'll need to try them out though. My hubby is refusing to even look at baby stuff in case anything goes wrong. I tried to get him to look at prams/buggies/travel systems in John Lewis the other day but he wasn't having any of it. Sad Think I'll just need to go myself and tell him what we're having - he says he's not looking at anything before December...

Bunny222 · 14/08/2012 22:31

Hey all! How are you doing? Haven't been on for a while.

Finally had midwife appt and got to hear the heartbeat - after what felt like ages waiting for her to find it. Very reassuring. Really want my 20wk scan now, still two weeks to wait...

Have now bought furniture for the nursery, a Mamas and Papas set 2nd hand that hardly has a mark on it. So am now planning on getting the silver cross travel system I've had my eye on, DH will have to agree since I went 2nd hand on the furniture...!

How are you feeling? Am still pretty tired!

Birdies · 15/08/2012 09:35

Great news pasha and marasme! Pasha I've got a little foot picture too, it's amazing isn't it?! My scan was nowhere near that clear with DD last year.

DollFisher · 15/08/2012 10:07

Ooh I am getting scan envy! Congrats to everyone :)
Just googled BJCM - Baby Jogger City Mini Stroller right?

I think my head is swimming with all the different options too at the moment.
I like the idea of a buggy from birth and since husband wants to keep car seat in the car, that works for us. Do I definitely, 100% not need a carry cot?? Or a moses basket?

Sorry for dragging this on, this is our first child and I'm a bit clueless with it really. We're planning to go to the London babyshow which will be two months before I'm due and hopefully get pram, sling etc sorted there.

I want the bambino mini cot thing so will probably get that at some point between now and then.

BuntyCollocks · 15/08/2012 10:37

You definitely don't need a carry cot or Moses basket!

Carry cot is nice but not essential. Lots of lovely from birth travel systems out there. I have the stokke xplory, which has the carry cot option, but the normal seat unit can be used from birth anyway and is v comfy. It also take the car seat when using adapters.

Moses baskets I always thought were a waste of time - a lot of babies grow out of them really quickly. I have the miyo baby hammock for the first 6 months at least (can do up to 9 depending on the baby), and then she'll go into the cot permanently. Will be using the cot for daytime naps so her brother doesn't feel the urge to ping her like a slingshot in the hammock so she is used to it.

Fab news on all the great scans!

newbie6 · 15/08/2012 10:44

Hi all,

Congrats to all who have had their 20week scans. I'm due to have mine in 2 weeks and just wondered what will happen? I know this is what they refer to as the anomoly scan but can anyone tell me what to expect? This probably sounds stupid, but given we had a CVS due to our nuchal test results and it came back okay, does that mean that I can be more reassured or does this scan look at other things that the CVS would not pick up?

Also - how often are you all seeing your midwife? I've seen one when I was 7 weeks and then a fetal specialist midwife when I had the CVS but don't have any more appointments?

Am totally clueless and just thought I would see if any of you could help?

thanks!

x

Lora1982 · 15/08/2012 11:18

im definatly not getting a moses basket doll. i think they area waste of money too baby can only be in it for about 4 months. i am having a carrycot though so it can sleep in that without getting disturbed moving to a different bed thing. my mums a foster carer and the newborns she gets sleep in there during the day and cot at night.

SquealyB · 15/08/2012 11:31

Great news on the scans everyone. Very envious of you all and I am counting down the days until 10 September.

Following the moses basket/carry cot etc. debate with interest. We will be getting a Stokke Izisleep car seat to go with our Xplory and luckily the buggy can be used from new born in any event. WE will probably get a carrier rather than a sling...but open to both.

Newbie I would check out your hospitals website. They often have an ante natal care section which (in my case) sets out when you can expect to see midwife/GP/specialists and when you can expect to have you scan.

DollFisher · 15/08/2012 11:51

Thanks BuntyCollocks and Lora1982.
I think I'll have to check out the slings/carriers at the babyshow in October but definitely seems like the Moses basket is out! Shame as John Lewis is having a sale on theirs at the moment...

Newbie, I'd check in the file your midwife gave you at your initial appointment. (assuming you got one?)

I know its different in every area but mine says I should see midwife between 8-10 weeks, then between 16 - 18 weeks, then 24 weeks, 28 weeks, 30 weeks... can't remember the rest but its all in my folder!

I actually forgot about the 16-18 week one as I have to remember and ring my GP and ask to make an app with the (same) midwive each time I'm supposed to see her which is not great if you are relying on pregnancy brain.

Saying that, when I realised I'd missed it she said it would have to wait until she is back from holiday in two weeks time so I figure it can't have been THAT important or she would have scheduled me in with a midwife from the hospital??

Birdies · 15/08/2012 12:00

I got a Moses basket and used it for about 6 months! Sorry doll, don't want to confuse you! However, this time I'm treating myself to one of those bednests that attaches to bed and will keep Moses basket downstairs for daytime naps.

newbie they check measurements (length of head, body and leg) against what they should be. Also check kidney and bladder look to be working ok. Look for any 'markers' which could indicate cystic fibrosis or something (not sure if that would have already been picked up by your CVS though). Also check for cleft palate, club foot, number of fingers and toes (if they can see them). Heart function too and brain properly formed. So lots of things!

Pascha · 15/08/2012 12:32

Last time the moses basket lasted about 10 days, DS hated it with a passion so we gave up. He loved his canvas crib so we will have that downstairs and i'm looking out for a second hand babybay or bednest as well for upstairs.

the BJCM is the BabyJogger City Mini, yes. If a buggy states "suitable from birth" and lies flat then a carrycot isn't essential. We had our son in the BJCM from birth and just got a headhugger like this to support the head well for the first few weeks. I think McLarens are the same and quite a lot of others.

The anomaly scan yesterday took about 20 minutes. They do lots of detailed checks on the various parts of the baby's body. Brain, heart, make sure all the organs are present and correct, measure the abdominal circumference, check the spine is there and that the skin covers it all the way, limbs, facial features, sex if you want it. My sonographer stopped at various points if she had an interesting view and pointed out bits here and there as the scan itself isn't always that clear to a layman. Once she got the necessary stuff out of the way it was fun! I'm considering a 4d scan in a month or 6 weeks time now.

I'm seeing MW on friday because I didn't have the 16 week appt.

I think thats everything Smile

newbie6 · 15/08/2012 12:53

Thank you!

bealos · 15/08/2012 15:17

Reading your chats about moses baskets and equipment with interest. I've just started drawing up a wish list of things to beg, steal and borrow from people (I had all this stuff the first time round, so know I'll use it but have given it all away)....

This feels, perhaps, a little pre-emptive, but I'm the organised type and this will make me have a little bit of control in the uncontrollable whirlwind that is pregnancy and labour!

I'm looking for and know that I will use:

  • baby car seat
  • moses basket (had this by the bed last time, though he spent most of the time in the bed with me)
  • changing mat
  • cosy toes for buggy
  • baby sling - long wrap like Ellaroo and baby bjorn type for bloke
  • bouncing cradle seat thing for the floor (not at all trashy, I should say)
  • baby bath
  • small cloth nappies
  • baby bit for Stokke TrippTrapp chair
  • bike seat

I already have:

  • cot & bedding
  • Maclaren buggy
  • baby gros and other clothes for 0-6 months
  • feeding bottles
  • nappy bucket and some bigger cloth nappies
  • Stokke TrippTrapp chair (I blagged this from Freecycle!!)

What's on your list?

Birdies · 15/08/2012 16:22

Good list bealos!

My 'to buy' list is:

Bugaboo Donkey
Bednest
Mattress & sheets for bednest

That's pretty much it - won't be able to afford much else after those two!

woody2313 · 15/08/2012 17:45

Hi - can I join this thread? This is my first, due 23/1/2013. Have been lucky enough to avoid any sickness so far, just been ridiculously tired but being a teacher at least I've got plenty of time to sleep at the moment! Had my 16 week MW appointment on Monday and got to hear the heartbeat which was a really pleasant surprise Smile Got my 20 week scan 2 weeks on Friday...

knuckingfackered · 15/08/2012 19:36

re the cosy toes foot muff thingy, if you can stretch to it check out baababy.
I got a fell hoff with my first and wouldn't be without it for a winter baby.
You wont have to worry at all bout LO getting cold especially in a lay flat buggy and wont have to bundle them up in masses of layers which isn't practical when in and out of shopping precincts, just unzip for baby to cool.
I even leave the fleece under side on buggy through summer as its super comfy and you don't get over heating with the natural fleece.
Great for sleeping baby and toddler.
