Thread 3; go!

Hello - finally joining this thread after lurking forever. I'm 40, and after an early MC last year, thought I would never get another BFP. It finally happened, after a nice holiday, while the GP was doing busy referring us for infertility investigations...

Thanks birdies. We will probably still go for it if bump is a boy, as it is the only boy's name we can both agree on, that goes with our surname.

Dollfisher you can get pushchairs a lot cheaper on ebay, if you don't mind it being second hand. I have actually been given a second-hand mamas and papas Pilko Pramette. Fingers crossed it will be ok, as it gets quite good reviews on here.

octane I don't normally wax, and am not about to start now!

Welcome bealos

BuntyCollocks · 13/08/2012 18:43

Welcome, bealos, and welcome back, missymooboo.

octane tbh I found no difference in pain levels when having ds, but with this pregnancy I've nearly been in tears! I get everything off, and it's getting harder to make myself go!

Hi there, welcome to the newbies and congratulations on the good scan news. Is anyone having hip pain or backache? I feel like I've run a marathon - my hips and legs really ache and I've got back ache now too. I'm going to the doctor this morning. I do not want spd at all...

Lora1982 · 14/08/2012 09:15

spring my back is sooo painful to the point where i have to get out of bed even if i could still sleep. my legs and hips ache too i thought it was cos i did that diy the other day but im still suffering

Pascha · 14/08/2012 09:28

Poor you with your backs Sad Lots of sympathy if not actual pain from here.

I would definitely second looking for buggies on ebay after doing some research and trying some out in the flesh at mothercare/john lewis etc. Its worth being very sure what you want before you buy a thing. We recently got our tandem from ebay saving £300-odd in the process, and its only 10 months old. If its a good brand very very few will have been trashed as people want their money back as far as possible.

glad your scan went well birdie. Mine is this afternoon. I'm quite nervous about it and have been holding off buying anything much for the baby until I know its all good.

Hi to Dollfisher and Bealos and anyone else I might have missed.

Birdies · 14/08/2012 09:42

Good luck today Pascha. I was so nervous too but once there I was just really excited and it's the best scan experience I've had so far - had about half an hour just watching baby. I hope you have a nice sonographer too and lots of time to watch.

Spring I had awful backache the other day where I almost couldn't walk. It felt like it was in my coxyx or whatever that bit at the top of your bum is called. I went for a walk and thought I wouldn't be able to get home. It's pretty much gone now but I can only think it's pregnancy related. I hope yours gets better soon.

happyhow · 14/08/2012 10:11

My coccyx gets sore if I've been doing a lot of walking. I've got done sciatic pain but it's not too bad, just gets worse when I've been doing a lot.

On another note, I've decided I'm Storm from X-Men. I was having a dream about being on a watersports holiday last night when out of nowhere there were big swells and crashing waves. I woke up at 4.37am with torrential rain outside followed by thunder and lightning 2 mins later. My pregnancy has clearly awoken my super powers. GrinGrin

SquealyB · 14/08/2012 10:34

Happyhow - that would be a cool pregnancy symptom. If pregnancy has awoken any super power of mine it is super sense of smell...I can tell what is a colleague is having for lunch 6 offices away. A faaar less glamour super power Grin.

I have been getting intermittent pain in my hips but have started swimming again and this seems (oddly) to have helped. Back/Hip joint pain is miserable so my sympathise to all of those sufffering at the moment.

Promised myself I would swim at least 3 times a week for the next few months as have been a real gym dodger of late.

Hi doll and bealos welcome to our merry band. Best of luck today pascha.

MrsMallard · 14/08/2012 11:44

Welcome doll, bealos, missymooboo and anyone else - sorry if I've missed your name!

It's been a while since I've posted so I've been catching up with everyone's posts. It's great to be hearing about 20 week scans with lovely healthy babies - congratulations to those who have already had them and all the best to Pascha this afternoon and those with them coming up later this week. On the flip side I'm sorry to hear that not all of you are feeling quite as well as your babies! I hope you're able to find something to ease the side-effects.

Has anyone else had an odd feeling like they've been kicked between the legs some days?! I don't get it every day but it's pretty uncomfortable when it does make an appearance. Squealy - I think I may have to join you in some swimming activity to try to alleviate the discomfort. I'd read that it can be an excellent way to exercise during pregnancy because of how the water supports you and removes the likelihood of putting strain on your joints. I was thinking of going to an aquanatal class tomorrow but am stupidly feeling a bit nervous about going! I feel like a bit of a fraud without much of a bump although they're happy to accept mums-to-be from 14 weeks...

We had our 16 week appointment this morning and the midwife was absolutely lovely. She found baby's heartbeat straight away, which was wonderful to hear and very reassuring.

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 12:04

Hello back to all!

We actually were bidding on a gorgeous Quinny Buzz 3 set on eBay but missed out by £20 because I thought we'd win and didnt track the bids at the end! :(

I think actually its for the best as we haven't actually tried any out in the shops yet so maybe we'll do that first - find the one we like and then get it from eBay...

MamaMary · 14/08/2012 12:05

Welcome to all the newbies!

And how exciting all these 20 week scans! Your experience sounded lovely birdies. Hope yours is good too Pascha. Mine's in 3 weeks' time - can't wait! I'm determined to find out the gender, but DH doesn't want to. Same thing happened last time and sonographer mouthed 'girl' to me and I had to keep it from him for the rest of the pregnancy - he was so stubborn that he didn't want to know. I don't mind which gender it is but I just like to know as soon as I can!

Has anyone else got sore feet? I went for a walk last night (not sure how long but over 3 miles) and my feet were aching afterwards - and still are. I was wearing good trainers. It's the soles of my feet. It's a symptom I had with my last pregnancy too (DH gave me lots of foot massages), but it didn't think it started this early on :(

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 12:09

Thanks Bealos just seen your message. I live in Bucks but commute to London everyday and I see loads of women struggling with pushchairs so I think a sling and lightweigt Maclaren sounds like a good idea!

What about the whole lying flat thing for newborns? We have a car which I'll probably use alot when I'm on maternity leave so Imagine I'd need a car seat too - do Maclaren's have those that connect onto the chassis? Do I need a carrycot too??

MarasmeAbsolu - we were actually looking on eBay and missed out on a Quinny Buzz :( but I think we need to go in the shop and try them out first and then bid later! I like the Bugaboo Bee as its meant to be light but it looks too much like an insect! (I know, that's the point!)

SpringFlowers · 14/08/2012 13:32

Doll - you will need a car seat. I've never had a Maclaren - I'm pretty sure you can't fit a car seat or carrycot to their pushchair but that the pushchair reclines entirely so is suitable from birth. The page below shows their pushchairs suitable from birth.

uk.maclarenbaby.com/from-birth-selector?lang=en&langVar=en&lang=en&logoVar=www

You might like something that does take a carrycot while you are on maternity leave if you think you would walk a lot. You could pick up something on ebay for that time and then buy your pushchair later when you go back to work. We have a Mamas & Papas Sola and love it. It's not particularly heavy but doesn't collapse particularly small.

www.mamasandpapas.com/range/sola/4928/?cm_re=PushchairsModel--Pod14--Sola

The best thing to do is go pram shopping. If you're in London John Lewis on Oxford Street is good and the M & P shop is at the top of Regent Street. You can try them all out before buying. I love pram shopping...

SpringFlowers · 14/08/2012 13:35

I went to the GP this moring and have a referral for physio. I'm a bit annoyed that my private healthcare doesn't cover any pregnancy related illness. What am I paying for then??? Hopefully it won't take too long to get an appointment.

MarasmeAbsolu · 14/08/2012 13:45

mmm - scan this afternoon
... and I think I have carpal tunnel in right arm / hand. crapito.

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 14:09

Thanks SpringFlowers the Sola looks really good too! I might pop in after work...
Good luck everyone with your scans today!

bealos · 14/08/2012 14:16

@ dollfisher springflowers

yes, you're right, you'll need a baby car seat too. I found it cheaper to buy Maclaren + car seat + sling than a 'travel system' anyway.

Those Maclaren Technos lie flat I think. Friends have had them and been through 3 kids, so they seem pretty long lasting!

Like all big purchases in life best to take a look in store (then buy cheaper online perhaps!).

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 14:31

Thank you for all he advice!
Suddenly got sooo excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D
I'm having a baby woo hoo!!!
Ok am calm now :)

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 14:31

SpringFlowers · 14/08/2012 14:32

I'm still umming and arrhhing about buying a pram this time at all. DD3 will be two and a bit and she prefers to walk. It's hard to persuade her to go in her pram sometimes. I could probably get away with a buggyboard and a pushchair for the weekends when there will be at least two people who want to push. The trouble is I love (love) the Donkey Smile

Doll - I have always wanted my children to face me so that I can talk to them. It's a personal preference I guess, DD3 is still facing me now and we chatter away. Sometimes she asks to be turned around to see where she's going but not very often. In a pushchair babies are nearly always forward facing. It depends how you feel about it. We also like the iCandy something (can't remember which one now) but it was much heavier which is why we didn't get it in the end.

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 14:40

SpringFlowers - My husband says the same actually, he wants our children to face us not 'random passers-by' lol.

He also said he doesnt want the pram/pushchair to be too comfortable incase our baby never wants to start walking!

I'm thinking maybe I could get away with a sling, car seat and pushchair? I'm told that if baby is sleeping its disruptive to wake them up and put them in puschair but they have to get used to the fact that life isn't fair right? (Am clearly a newbie who has never dealt with a screaming baby in a parking lot)

SpringFlowers · 14/08/2012 14:48

Your baby will start walking and you will want them to be as comfy as possible Smile. What worked for me was that the car seat fitted onto the pram wheels so that I could drive somewhere, baby would go to sleep and I could lift her in the seat out of the car and put her onto the pram. She would usually stay asleep. That was brilliant in the early days. I also used a sling quite a lot but more in the house or if out and she became distressed. I had a fabric one (Kari Me) but there are loads to choose from and a whole sling culture to get into. When she was new we thought about what she was used to when she was inside me, dim lighting, muted sounds, warmth, comfort etc. and we tried to replicate it where we could. For us it worked really well and our other children bought in to the whole thing. I also had a Lullabelly www.lullabelly.com/index.html and played music to her in the womb - calming music. We used the same music when she was born and when she was crying to help soothe her. I just got it out again actually to start using. I'll stop now, information overload!

DollFisher · 14/08/2012 15:00

Aww that sounds lovely! will look that up and see where they sell it here. Maybe I'll see it at the baby show...

SpringFlowers · 14/08/2012 15:06

I had to order it from that site and it was shipped here. They were entirely reliable, I don't think you can buy new here but maybe on Amazon?

Pascha · 14/08/2012 17:53

Springflowers and Doll and anyone else, we had the same dilemma about whether to double buggy or not as DS will be 2.4 when the baby comes along. We eventually decided we did need a tandem to give me the option of shoving them both in and getting on when necessary. I have two slings and will certainly be using the Connecta as much as possible but sometimes I want somewhere to stash the shopping and change bag and stuff and sometimes I would like to be able to put the baby down and feel a bit freer. I'm thinking of our tandem as a rental really, probably about 9 months of regular use and then DS will cope with a buggy board on the old buggy. I hope to sell it on this time next year for about the same as I paid.

My experience with carseats is I never put the carseat on the pushchair once, just never needed to. It stayed strapped in the car the whole time we used it. We had a BJCM from birth and it was, forgive the language, SODDING BRILLIANT. If DS was a year older we would be keeping it. Its on eBay now (with much sadness from me).

I quite fancy the lulabelly, may have to consider that.

Who said they are going to the baby show in october? I really want to go but may have trouble persuading DH. How much are the tickets?
