MyDaydream · 17/07/2012 13:19

Is anyone not doing antenatal classes. Ive been reading up on them in my area and it's one 1.5 hour class. I'm just wondering what I'll learn there that I won't have already learnt on the Internet or from friends/family.

WeeJo08 · 17/07/2012 13:31

Aha! You are another one who is on Team Baby Girl minipie Grin Soooo jealous of those who know already!

I've signed up for the NCT course, which runs in August, and I'm getting the NHS one in October. The NHS one my midwife booked me in for at my last appointment (16w) and didn't mention cost etc so I guess they're free? The NCT were quite expensive, but I'm mostly doing them to meet other people due the same time, and for DH to get some confidence.

Barbeasty · 17/07/2012 13:45

I don't know what the nhs provision is here now. Last time I had 3 Saturday mornings, which I think were an hour each. They were ok and there was a good one on "what can go wrong" which then finished with a tour of the unit. Not as bad as it sounds and was mainly why you might be transfered and what would then be available to you eg epidural, and the interventions you might face.

I don't know quite what is offered if you plan to have a cs at the hospital instead- although given that I haven't even heard anything about seeing a consultant yet...

I'm waivering about booking nct classes, mainly because DH absolutely refuses to go. And I want to find out who the teacher is because I know them all from the coffee mornings I went to with DD, there are definitely a couple I'm not sure I'd feel as comfortable with.

Bubbless · 17/07/2012 13:51

daydream- is the maternity pillow worth it? they always seem to be so expensive?!
i was debating not doing the antenatel classes but then decided it might be a good way to meet some other people in the area? not really going to learn, ive got mumsnet for that going to make friends [shy]

eggs- we get snowed in every year as well, but the closest we can park our car is at the bottom of our mountain hill, its so steep that i struggle to walk up / down it on a good day at the moment?!

clarella- i was going to message you this morning to wish you luck but i was still asleep Blush
sorry that school have been fecking useless not as supportive as we hoped. only a week until summer holidays though?!?!

spotty- i woke up with a headache at 4.. and to pee was rubbish so feeling your pain there!

eggs- that bacon and mushroom cob sounds AMAZING

seymore- glad scan went well, cant believe how quickly we are flying through the 20 week scans! what are they checking for in this one?

littlemiss congrats on having a little elf!
the very early scans are really dissapointing arnt they? i had one at 6 weeks and it was like a tiny kidney bean, the sonographer was all 'awh look its your baby..' and i was just Hmm

stacey- ive had thrush quiet bad and im not on antibiotics?! you can use vagasil and stuff like that though, i keep mine in the fridge Grin

stacks- the nhs ones are free, but i really want to do the nct ones to make some friends, its out of my price range though :/

sorry my posts are so long!!

anyone else been having horrible dreams recently?!

FriendofDorothy · 17/07/2012 13:52

Has anyone got twitchy legs? They are driving me nuts today. Any advice on how to ease it?

CODwidow · 17/07/2012 13:59

I have the twitchy legs every evening plus cramp but I've found a glass of tonic water every night after tea usually helps it or a heat pad under my legs at bedtime.

Well I have a definate bump now but it's quite high and round so my normal trousers will fit but can be uncomfortable when I sit down so mostly maternity stuff for me now. Can't believe I'm 19w tomorrow and 20wk scan in 13 sleeps seems to be going so quickly. Still quite nervous about my scan although trying to be positive just be glad when they tell me alls ok.

Oh well only 3 days till summer hols now and all chaos taking over my house so best finish the housework and wait for 4 hungry boys to come home Grin

Barbeasty · 17/07/2012 14:18

Bubbless, have you looked at the discounts they offer and paying in installments etc?

Also have a look at their bumps and babies coffee mornings which are free and can be a good place to meet people.

I think nhs ones can be good, but mine had me and 2 other couples turn up every week. The others already knew each other so weren't interested in making friends.

FriendofDorothy · 17/07/2012 14:19

I have heard that you shouldn't drink tonic water in pregnancy so I am not sure.

SpottyTeacakes · 17/07/2012 14:32

I've been having horrible dreams, usually about someone trying to kill me SadConfusedAngry

CODwidow · 17/07/2012 14:44

Do you know why? I've always drank it with all my pregnancies as always suffer with cramp and both mw and doctor have always told me its the best cure because of the quinine? Be interesting to know why. Smile

CODwidow · 17/07/2012 14:48

They told me that the levels in tonic water were so small (in 1 glass) that it can't have an affect where as quinine tablets are much much higher doses but I guess it's like everything else just depends

WeeJo08 · 17/07/2012 14:52

I'm doing the NHS one too in October. It's quite good as its the 5pm one so DH can come (he'll only have to leave a little bit early) :)

Is anyone else having discomfort in their rib area? I am finding it really uncomfortable to sit at my desk/at a table.

stacks - have you contacted the NCT, being a charity they do discounted prices if you really will struggle to pay for them, it might be worth a quick phone call. I would recommend them, if only as a way of meeting friends due at the same time and living locally. DS1 is 2 now and we still meet every friday for lunch and some at various groups. we all say it was the best money we ever spent and the cheapest friends we ever bought!

i never did nhs ones last time and wont do either this time.

Barb - i had my appointment date through re CS before my 12 week scan and so it may be worth just checking that the paperwork hasnt gone missing.

ellliebelle · 17/07/2012 15:57

I think i finallt felt baby move today :) pretty sure it was baby although it felt quite high Hmm

CODwidow · 17/07/2012 15:58

I won't be going as after 4 dc's I don't really think I need to plus I have made a lot of friends with children since having ds1. I definately think their worth it though as when I had ds1 we moved areas and I was so lonely.

Barbeasty · 17/07/2012 16:01

Yes. I'll need to chase my midwife about dropping my MatB1 at the surgery to collect before my next appointment, so I will ask about the consultant then too.

I wish I hadn't googled the antibiotics I've been given. The Dr said they were fine in pregnancy and the pharmacist just handed them over, but everything on line says not to have them when pregnant. Except the NHS which says it's a case of balancing the risk and only to have them if you need them.

And how do you tell if extreme tiredness is a) a side effect, B) down to pregnancy or c) because DD refused to sleep in her own bed last night so none of us slept properly! I think it's a mix of b and c!

SpottyTeacakes · 17/07/2012 16:04

Barbeasty stay away from google! Remember lots of the sites you looked at will be American and I think they're a lot more over cautious than us. Plus you're way past the first trimester which is when all the organs are developing and any medicine could cause an effect (according to my consultant)

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 17/07/2012 16:24

I'm not bothering with classes as DH wouldn't go anyway, I have lots of friends with dcs/babies/pregnant. And I've been there and done it all twice at the same hospital so there's not a lot else they can tell me tbh!

CODwidow · 17/07/2012 16:39

Honestly google should be avoided I thought id check tonic water after the last post and it scared me half to death so I rang my mw friend who said most of those sites are American and you'd have to drink 1 litre everyday for at least a week for the levels to be the same as 2 quinine tablets. Obviously it's each to their own and own personal choice but I'm not sure my 1 small glass on the days I'm suffering cramp is really enough to panic me. (although I'm sure I'll now stop drinking it altogether)

itsMYNutella · 17/07/2012 16:43

Barbeasty I agree with Spotty the USA tend to treat pregnant women like idiots and are very strict. Remember Google is not your friend :o

I'm definitely going to do classes (again covered by the health insurance you have to have here) mainly because I want to meet other Mums. Pretty sure I'll get fed up with them ramming natural births and breastfeeding down my throat.

I'm think it's great that they seem to always have breastfeeding experts in the maternity wards but it would be better if they were supportive of individual choice rather than guilt-tripping mothers into it -i.e. shaming those who really don't want to, for whatever reason, and of course making them feel like failures from the off! And I'm totally pro breastfeeding!!

Sorry, for the rant... might be to do with the dream I had that my baby girl wouldn't breastfeed - no I don't know the sex but DP and I usually refer to it being a boy :o

HoneyMum21 · 17/07/2012 16:48

I'm getting more and more nervous about the 20 week scan (a week tomorrow - 25th. Do i have any scan buddies out there?) Been thinking about allthe stupid things i did before i found out Bump was on his way. I was on sleeping tablets and was drinking - not a huge amount, but still- and generally not taking great care of myselfand i'm really scared - especially about the medication - that there's gonna be some kind of problem. I stopped taking them as soon as i found out i was pregnant but im woried they've done some damage to him. What do you think?

brooke89 · 17/07/2012 16:58

Helloooooooo everyone hope you are all ok with your bumps Smile

Don't think I'm ever going to be able to catch up on 2 weeks of posts but will have a nose later as to what's been going on!
