Thanks Swiss it's not as bad as all that as today was the last day of my qualifying week so I'm entitled to SMP now which isn't to be sniffed at as it's £135.45 per week for 39 weeks plus the first six weeks are at 90% of my salary. I have applied for the new positions in the department and had my interviews so I just have to wait and see and try not to worry too much.

On the way to the pub for a social gathering, it's the first time all our friends have seen my bump, wish me luck dreading spending the evening with skinny beauties Hmm

ValiumQueen · 27/07/2012 20:13

I think washables are cheaper, so long as you buy wisely and do not tumble dry. No need for nappy cream, nappy disposal bags, fabric conditioner, only use a tiny bit of detergent, wash at 40, sometimes less, three to four extra loads a week at the most. When you think a child is in nappies for 3 years, at least a tender a week, that is a lot of money. Washable wipes save a fortune too. A consideration though is that it makes bottoms bigger, so clothes do not fit so well (I found) ok with trousers as just get bigger size, but things like vests, gros, all in ones, matching outfits, can be a bit frustrating.

ValiumQueen · 27/07/2012 20:15

Plus a lot of kids are in night nappies past age 5 and pull-ups cost a fortune!

blonderthanred · 27/07/2012 20:30

Thank you misslaugh, yes after 13 years together it is going to be great not to have to be the driver all the time!

Right, I've already started crying at the Olympics coverage. It's going to be a soggy night.

daisychain76 · 27/07/2012 20:51

All this talk of boys names is stressing me out - I can't find one I really like. Quite like Benedict (shortened to Ben or Ned), despite the slightly odd Big Brother contestant of the same name this year, but our surname begins with "J" and therefore DH is adamant we can't have a first name beginning with "B" because of the teasing potential. I personally doubt anyone would notice as they'll have a middle name too, but he will not be persuaded.

MissMummy1 · 27/07/2012 21:47

Was meant to be going to our not-so-local local tonight to watch my old boss's band play an outdoor gig to close the village festival. Their band is amazing and DH loves their music but I am knackered after a day of packing boxes and blitzing the apartment :-( The idea of standing outside for 4 hours in the freezing cold rain with loads of drunk people was not my idea of fun. DH been really sweet about me ruining his evening - he's run me a bath, made a playlist on spotify and done a tesco run for man beers, mummy schloer and cake.... and then ruined it by annoucing my in laws have invited themselves over from NI to stay Sunday and Monday night. (we move on Wednesday) grr!

horseylady · 27/07/2012 22:12

Think were going fairly common lol!! Luca or Luke :)

Would have been saffron for a girl :)

Back home now just finished shift at work where I didn't cry despite nearly!!!

Got to get ip early in the morning and really want to watch the opening ceremony! Good news is i can still ride!! I'm not too fat yet!!

Elizadoesdolittle · 27/07/2012 22:44

daisy I'm sorry but I agree with your DH. You just can't have a child with the initials B.J. Think how rarely middle names are used, and how cruel kids can be. He would forever be teased for it. I really do think people will notice. Sorry!

TheDetective · 27/07/2012 22:47

Horsey Luca or Jonah are our two contenders at the moment! We're still deliberating!

Swiss I'm so sorry to hear about your DP being such a dick. Take it from me, all men have an inbuilt twat disorder, I've yet to find one that isn't capable of displaying such behaviour from time to time. I've been through multiple relationship breakdowns (with 2 different people lmao!) and know how much you are hurting, more so because you are pregnant.

Do not let him think you are to blame though, he is the one who has chosen to walk away. He has made the decision to be a 'weekend dad' if that is what he wants to call it.

I'm quite sure he will be back, it sounds like he has left in anger, and given time will calm down. They do realise the grass is greener...

DP and I split up several times in the first 14 months of our relationship, and I didn't think it had a chance of working out. At one point he left me for 5 weeks, but you know what, he came back! And ever since our relationship has been so much better for it. He just realised that I'm right about everything :) And the sooner he just accepted it, the happier he would be Grin. What I'm trying to say is, that when he left that time, our relationship became a million times stronger for it, and we went from rows and arguing, to a pretty much non volatile relationship. We rarely argue now.

If you were near by to me, I'd offer a shoulder to cry/whinge/shout on, but I don't think we are, are we??

applepieinthesky · 27/07/2012 22:52

I agree with your DH and Eliza. Kids will pick up on the BJ initials so I wouldn't do it personally.

I'm quite enjoying the opening ceremony but now got to go out to pick DP up from work. He then wants to go and buy an iPad or laptop. Yes at this time of night Hmm

Good luck for monday stunt. I'll have my fingers crossed for you.

TheDetective · 27/07/2012 22:58

Daisy, no, you can't have a BJ! DH is right, but don't tell him I said that!!

I've post a picture on the FB group of my (what feels like) horrifically swollen ankles/feet. They look like the elephant mans feet! Arghhhh! They just went insanely swollen this morning after an absolutely horrendous night shift spent on my feet! Think 22 women and babies (full ward) and 2 midwives. Oh, and none of them were straightforward to care for, all had their own needs and issues. One midwife started crying when I arrived for the night shift, the late had been so bad - same thing, only 2 midwives and a full ward.

If I thought I was stressed at the start of the week, it is safe to say, I had no idea of what was to come....!! I am proud of myself however that I managed to give at least the basic standard of care to the women I looked after, even if it was the basics, and nothing more, I didn't stop, just kept going because I had to. The paperwork on the other hand, left a lot to be desired, so I hope CNST never look at my notes.... Hmm

Oh, on another point, remember the tightenings I was having 2 weeks ago? And I thought it could be a UTI causing it? Well I got a call from the GP practice today, telling me my urine sample was positive for a UTI and I needed antibiotics. Mmm, 2 weeks later? Thanks for that. I asked what it had shown, as they had prescribed Amoxicillin, which isn't first line for a UTI, but usually for specific infections like e.coli. And yes, it was e.coli. Siiiiiigh.

Good job it wasn't enough to send me in to labour.... 2 weeks! 2 bloody weeks! The report would have been back on the tuesday after I went in on the thursday overnight!

Chunkychicken · 27/07/2012 23:04

Daisy I agree, it would be obvious that its BJ. I was trying out different one-syllable names for a middle name, such as Beatrice Jane. Er, no. Our surname begins with C so that rules out William, Wilhemina etc.

Detective nothing like getting promoted treatment huh??!! Wink

mrswee · 27/07/2012 23:18

Well ladies, within 5 mins of reading this thread today I had gone online and bought 10 LL bamboo nappies!! I am a sucker for a bargain.

I had seriously though about buying washable for my first baby but was put off by the short term cost, we had to buy everything else at the time for the baby and it was all adding up.
This baby however doesn't need much so when I saw 10 for £35 I thought I'd buy them
I was concidering doing a mix of washable during the day and disposable at night... how many nappies and wraps do you think I need for that?
my main concern is that the baby is born in the winter so we won't be drying outside but I guess the heating is on most of the time anyway so probably ok.

swiss sorry you are going through all this. X

mrswee · 27/07/2012 23:20

detective my ankles were double sized yesterday.. and over night they didnt even fully go down! this is the start for me. last time i ended up in DH's shoes at the end of pregnany and for the first few weeks after the birth where the swelling was actually worse!!

GTbaby · 27/07/2012 23:31

I feel crap. I have a bunged up nose and head. Sore throat. My yummy aches. My legs feel crampy n tight. I have to get up at 8 to get ready for a wedding!

N I need to wee so got to get out of bed!

Can I take Ben a Kerry's for these symptoms? Obviously won't solve needing the loo issue

Glad to know I am not alone! It really isn't an attractive look! I wouldn't mind but my work shoes are comfy flats! I need socks that don't dig in! Going to get some mens socks tomorrow :(

I only work socks for work, as I have to - my work shoes are unwearable without them! Even ankle socks would be no good at the minute!

PigletJohn · 27/07/2012 23:52

re swollen ankles - Some say that putting your feet up helps the swelling, but do people find it's really true? And is it better if you lie in a warm bath?

Chunkychicken · 28/07/2012 00:48

I was very lucky in my pg with DD that I only got swollen feet/ankles on a couple of occassions. The only thing I could do was raise my feet well above head/heart for a while - the sofa arm is quite high so they went up there & I lay flat on the sofa. Couldn't stay like it long though!!

Thechick · 28/07/2012 07:37

Not sure if this is true but I'm sure I read somewhere that swollen feet and hands are something to do with too much salt and not enough water. Im scared about my hands swelling and not being able to get my wedding ring off. Has anyone gone to term without hands swelling at all??

thedectective I'm on the same antibiotics but mine is for strep b. My midwife completely missed it 2 days earlier, it was only picked up when I went in to the mau for tightenings. My surgery prescribed me antibiotics with penicillin even though I told them I was allergic. Good job I asked. I need to have antibiotics now and then when I go into labour which I'm not happy about but if it gives me a healthy baby then that's what I have to do.

A friend of mine gave birth on last week and it sounded like one of those being in the right place at te right time situations. She just went in for a routine check for her kidney and they realised the baby was in distress. She was at term but the baby was little and now I'm trying not to be paranoid. I keep telling myself that bad things do happen but it doesn't mean they will to me.

Sorry about the looong post at this time of the morning.

Thechick · 28/07/2012 07:47

I found this, I was half right about the swelling-

  1. Watch what you eat and drink. Be mindful of what you?re putting into your body as well. Water, water, and more water. You really can?t drink too much water during pregnancy. It can help with so many issues from swelling to keeping your uterus from becoming cranky (remember, it?s a big muscle!). And don?t skimp on salt, either. Oftentimes we associate salt with swelling, but you don?t want to cut back on salt during pregnancy unless your doctor/midwife advises you to for medical reasons ? otherwise salt to taste. Protein is another big nutritional component. During pregnancy be sure to consume about 70g+ each day.
ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 08:08

We have a WC. We call her Billie though.

mrsWee did you get wraps?

It is hard to know how many you will need as initially they will need changing a lot. I would say see how you get on with the 10, and buy more if you feel you need too. Have some disposables to hand. They should dry fine near a radiator. You may prefer to wash every two days, or daily. See what fits in best for you. I had 16 and washed every other day, but used Fuzzis and they drIed overnight, plus were stuffable, and I had twice as many boosters as nappies as they took days to dry. you may decide they are not for you anyway, so best not buy too many, although they are addictive. Be warned!

ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 08:14

Re swelling. My broken ankle is swelling, but that is to be expected. The other is fine. If your hands are swelling I would take your rings off now as it is unlikely to get better until well after the birth. I have not been able to wear my ring between DC2 and DC3. Perhaps I should just get it enlarged. I used to have mega skinny fingers. If you have any fluids IV during the birth then you will likely swell like a hippo. I thought I was going into heart failure I was so swollen. It would really have helped if they had warned me it would happen. I peed about 18lb off during the first week. Drinking loads of water helps to get it out, amazingly enough.

mrswee · 28/07/2012 09:31

I called my midwife almost 3 weeks ago and left a message about all the tightings Ive been having, I want a follow up after being in hospital with it 6/7 weeks ago because it's still happening now and then. they refused to investigate before because I was only 16 weeks, but now I am almost 23 weeks I would like it looked into.
She still has not got back to me and I mentioned it to my doctor on monday at my 22 week apointment. She said she'd get hold of the midwife for me. She has left several messages for her and now faxed a letter to her over this whole week, not even my doctor has had an answer. It's really pissing me off!! Surely that's not on. I also asked her for a birth review at my booking appoinment 3 months ago and she siad she would sort it but I have had nothing. I don't want a birth review at the last min, that defeats the purpose and could bring up bad memories close to the time I will give birth again.
