Just back from Bluewater where we have been playing with buggies. We have discounted the Phil&Teds completely due to seating positions. The Babyjogger City Select is enormous and looks very unwieldy. The Icandy Peach Blossom is quite a lot more than we are willing to pay. We are now down to the Mountain Buggy +one (which we can't see in the flesh) or ?I don't know what? Confused. Tandems are all so rubbish really. None of them do everything, there is a huge compromise on every single one.

DS will be 2.4 when this little one arrives, I just don't think I he will cope with just a buggy board, he's too liable to get off and run away and i'm not patient enough to deal with a toddler wanting to stop and examine all the time when all I want to do is Get On! I want to be able to shove him in the buggy quickly and get moving when I need to.

Scan date arrived today for 14 August. Must remember to book an appointment this time with the MW for the week after Blush

mrsbugsywugsy · 19/07/2012 18:27

I've just had a letter through from the hospital saying I am low risk for Down's - 1 in 5000, which sounds good. The other syndromes are even lower, 1 in 100,000 and 1 in 250,000. Very relieved.

As well as the sharp pains, I also have a constant dull ache in my lower abdomen - I'm not sure if this could be a UTI, constipation, or just pregnancy. i don't think I have any ingrowing hairs Grin

I didn't have a very full bladder at all for the scan - I forgot and went to the loo before I left the house, then had a really stressful journey to the hospital - there was a protest going on so there were no buses, and I had to jump in a cab and arrived with no spare time.

Disco that sounds like a pain re. your scan. I would have thought your DP's work would let him have the time off, so long as there is no pressing reason he has to be there. Can he tell them what it's for? If not can he pull a sicky?

Great news bionic and newbie. Bionic that sounds like a pain about your pre-eclampsia though.

Hormonalhell · 19/07/2012 20:07

Lovely job BionicEmu Smile

pmgkt · 19/07/2012 20:17

my friend tested the icandy when she was due her second. My ds1 sat in the back at 16 months to see how much room there was and when the front seat was reclinded he nearly had his legs chopped off, bearly any room at all. she went with the city select baby jogger and loves it.

Pascha · 19/07/2012 20:54

Yeah I agree about the icandy. The Select is MASSIVE though.

pmgkt · 19/07/2012 21:20

I have a phil and teds and will be using the doubles kit with it. As a buggy i love it and as my ds1 will be 2 and a half he wont always be in it. I have used it with a friends child though and its very workable. I think the fact that you always see loads around with doubles kits i would maybe give it more thought.

that said when me and my friend looked at the doubles options in john lewis, the assistant said that the city select is the same size at the phil and teds. i didnt believe him so set mine up next to it ...... and he was right. the length is the same. it just looks bigger cos it doesnt go into the single wheel. The width at the back is the same to, but the select does have loads better seating options.

Hey ladies, haven't been on for a while been so icky but a little better now. Had my scan last week, hurrah, hadn't expected to feel so emotional. How long have you had to wait for your Downs risk testing ladies?

Pascha · 19/07/2012 21:45

Problem is DS is too tall for the second seat in the P&T, his head pokes over the top. DH took one look and said NO straight away. He looked uncomfortable in it when we sat the seat on the top for when the baby is in the cocoon so its really not for us.

Is the select really a similar size? It just looked enormous next to the P&T with the second seat right out in front. I like it online but in RL it just looked ridiculously big, as big as the Obaby zoom.

I don't know. Maybe I'll just sling the baby for a year and stick with my beautiful battered old City Classic.

Brugmansia · 19/07/2012 22:53

I had the downs test at the same time as the scan. They took the blood first, then I had the scan and then the results were ready about half an hour later.

I told one of my colleagues today. Turns out she's pg too and also due in January!

EmilieFloge · 20/07/2012 07:07

Hello all, just a quick update to say I got my results for the quad test.

The risk of Downs is 1:350 which though they don't class it as high risk, is a lot higher than my friend's and so it is worrying me a bit.

But they don't offer amnio or any further testing for this ratio, so it is a matter of just waiting and hoping all is well.
I am grateful that the risk isn't very high. I know it could be a lot more scary.

Anyway love to all and I hope we get a sunny weekend at last x x

mrsbugsywugsy · 20/07/2012 08:04

Bunny they took my bloods after my scan, and told me that if it was bad news they would call me within three days, otherwise they would send me a letter which could take up to two weeks. However on the third day I got home to find a letter telling me I was low risk.

Emilie is your friend the same age as you? Your Downs risk increases as you get older so your risk in your late 30's is always going to be higher than someone a bit younger. 1 in 350 is a good result. It is natural to worry a bit in pregnancy as there are always things which could go wrong, but for the vast majority everything will be fine.

AFAIK you can still have an amnio if you want it, but the risk of miscarriage from that would be higher than your risk of having a Down's baby.

EmilieFloge · 20/07/2012 10:26

Thankyou, MrsBW, yes, she is almost the same age and her risk is 1:1,300. I suppose I'm thinking, what is it that made our chances so different...but I can't know so there is probably no point in stressing it!

happyhow · 20/07/2012 11:18

Just had a little online shopping spree with the Next and New Look sales... The Next stuff is going to take ages though. I asked for it to be delivered to the store and the things I've chosen will take 4-6 weeks before I can collect. I might change it to delivery and see if it comes quicker... Was just being stingy and didn't want to pay for delivery!!!

Thought I'd update the list with my next scan date seeing as I'm actually on the laptop for once!

happyhow ooh will have to have a look at that

Had my consultant appointment through 9th August they are so efficient here anyone know what they will do ?

happyhow · 20/07/2012 17:27

I also went to John Lewis to look at pram type things this afternoon. I had wanted a Bugaboo Cameleon but I think I've changed my mind to an iCandy now that I've seen them in real life. Not sure which one though. Maybe the strawberry.

What do people think? Smile

octanegirl · 20/07/2012 18:27

I need some kind of mud plugging buggy as I live on a farm!

theboutiquemummy · 20/07/2012 19:34

Sad anyone else put off by the prices of buggies etc !

MarasmeAbsolu · 20/07/2012 20:56

on the topic of buggies:
got "quite a few with DD" - originally wanted a bugaboo bee, which DH vetoed due to price. We were, BTW, truly shocked at price and not impressed by the in store "demos".
started with a Freecycle silvercross giant vintage affair (free of course) - lovely, but not ideal after CS, nor to go down the 4 stairs at the bottom of the path.
Then got a Loola from ebay, which worked with maxi cosi and carrycot - but the handles were a bit tricky, and could not phone and walk at the same time
Sold that one and got a Loola up instead (with a handle bar thingy) which was fine, but not ideal in the long run.
Finally, we stumbled across a bee on sale (end of line) in John Lewis, and DH finally relented. Best buy ever, as it is light, very maneuverable with a nice giant hood for blowy windy weather (which is our only type of weather).
Also got a quinny buzz on ebay, which we've always been happy with.

This time round, we'll keep our bee with a buggy board for DD, and we'll pimp it with a micralite toro cot for the first few months (which doubles up nicely as a mosses basket when staying at in laws).

Right

Otherwise, had a few shitty days - had the quad test last week, with midwife mentioning that result would take up to 3 weeks, but that I'd get a call within 7 days is there was a problem. I had had the NT measurement at 12 weeks, but my hospital is still training, so the NT result does not count - however, the NT was not a reassuringly tiny figure, and fluctuated between 2.4 and 2.9 (DH apparently cannot remember that Hmm). This worried me a fair bit.
I was at a big work thingy abroad for the whole of this week, and got a missed call from the hospital on Tuesday (8 days post quad test) with a weird and hardly audible message telling me to call midwife. Had no notes, phone numbers or detail, so asked DH to "sort it"... let's just say that nothing got sorted. Got random midwives calling in middle of work thingy, asking for authorisation to speak to DH. Would not speak to me though, which kind of defeated the point. It took me 48hours to get anyone to actually check the fetal medicine results, which are apparently "low risk". I still don't know who called, or why...

octanegirl · 20/07/2012 22:28

On another note altogether, are any first timers showing yet? I'm not and was wondering when it was going to happen....I'm 15+3....

eleda · 21/07/2012 08:51

No showing here octane although there's a bit of flab to get through first so I'm not sure I'd tell as easily as those with a washboard!

It seems so long to the next appointment..... Is there still a baby in there?!?

happyhow · 21/07/2012 09:34

I'm 15+5 and not showing but I also have a bit of tummy for it to push through! I was hoping to have a bump for going back to school after the summer hols - 4 weeks left to pop...

I've got the midwife on Monday for the 16 week check up and then my scan is the first day back at school Grin. Oh well.

PricklyPickle · 21/07/2012 09:47

I'm 16+5 and to me and my DP I'm obviously showing, there's a definite pot belly there in the mornings and a proper mini bump by bedtime. Not sure how I look to the outside world though maybe just fat Confused I'm usually quite skinny so I guess its more obvious.

I keep looking at myself and thinking this is probably the slimmest I will ever be again, and you know what, I don't care one bit!

OP posts:
knuckingfackered · 21/07/2012 10:39

octane I was still laying on my belly at 19 weeks with first (honestly, make the most of it) some what different affair now........

boutique I've been a skin flint from the first on baby gear. Buggie was a ten year old hand me down, once it died I went on ebay and got identical model for £15. Blankets and bath support and snowsuits are all nct sale or ebay.
When kids are v young the stuff is barely worn a week or 3 so its always in ace condition, why pay.
The only thing I splashed out on new was cot, mattress and nappies (second hand nappies couldn't get my head round....)

As this preg is unplanned (ie I've sold everything, nappies n all) gonna have to skrimp around friends for off casts etc. n ebay a cot but buy mattress.
Already had a bumper buy up at nct sale.
Thankfully DD will be 3 so hoping to get away with a buggy board on the back of my old jaloppy.

I just dig the make do n mend, recycle, go eco ethos...... what can I say
