Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Clarella · 22/05/2012 07:00

Ah brilliant, nct magazine had begun to weedle its way into my mind with expensive looking parental bed attachment cots.

A friend with 2 young children recommended the ikea day beds (can't put link in but there's about 3) for when/if baby is in own room for you to sleep on, or later when they're poorly and need mum near - they can open out into a slim double or remain single and have storage. But love the advice that says shops are still open after the birth!

Clarella · 22/05/2012 07:05

The ah brilliant was for the cheap football and the ikea cot attached to bed, but all this advice super handy!

Chloe55 · 22/05/2012 07:19

I was definitely gonna get one of those bed side co-sleeping crib things....until I saw my friend who borrowed one and she said it would have been the biggest waste of money if she had-no easier than a Moses basket apparently. I loved my travel system but I too liked the carseat to base action for when ds fell asleep in the car. 11+ weeks now and feel rough rough rough still Sad

StrawberrytallCAKE · 22/05/2012 08:48

Hello new thread.

I too was looking at the nct side of bed cots, what excellent advice on the ikea cots thank you it will save me a fortune!

Clarella · 22/05/2012 08:49

Anyone else still really struggling to get heads round the pram/travel system/buggy concepts and options - sorry being really thick and attempting to Google but still don't get what is needed when.

Do I totally embarress myself do what my parents do in a world of too much choice and log into Which?!

DH keeps pointing out that, we have yet to have the scan (Thursday!) a house that looks like britains biggest hoarders cross an ikea warehouse (boxes of kitchen) due to mega building work on half of it, and making use of offers last summer plus typical bodgeitnscarper builders who messed up the heating, water and roof, no washing machine, squatting in front room, need to de-artex the 'nursery' and a new bathroom so a cot and complicated baby transport system isn't really a priority at the mo.

Typical, heating and hot water gets fixed when weather gets warm.

Anyway, what's the best wrappy/slingy/carry baby on you thing? A caboodle looks good!

StrawberrytallCAKE · 22/05/2012 09:04

I didn't use a sling last time but I really want to this time, I have nomodea which ones are good but I know there are sling meets all around the country where you can try them out. I'd love a material one where the baby can lie across my front.

Don't worry Clarella it will all become clear, make sure you see the pram you decide on in real life and test out how easy it is to put up and down and get into the boot of your car/on the bus. I bought a mothercare pram last time and it was bloody awful, still not 100% decided on which one we'll get this time.

Pregnancy insomnia kicked in last night, just in bed with dd watching a film so I'm going to have a snooze now before enjoying the lovely weather!

StrawberrytallCAKE · 22/05/2012 09:04

Nomodea - no idea

issimma yes had another look and finding which? good, then saw mumsnet also has reviews so reckon i'll cross check it all nearer time and work out what we want/need/afford.

Good luck today!

CODwidow · 22/05/2012 10:18

Still feeling pretty rough but getting quite excited reading everyone's shopping lists! Im hoping to get the bugaboo bee plus as I have a 7 seater and will need all the seats up so it's a nice parent facing lightweight pram that will hopefully last and fit into my tiny boot! Smile

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 22/05/2012 10:40

thank god i found you all :)

shopping lists, hmmm im being given loads by mates thankfully and still have a cot from dd and ds

have got a sliding crib for upstairs and a moses basket for downstairs a bath insert to keep baby still and at an angle in bath so kids can be in with him/her (bought on sale in mothercare)

we got our buggy when i was about 6 weeks Blush got a mothercare trenton, wont use it as a travel system as im a bit manic about baby being laid flat for long periods, and have always lifted my kids from car seat to buggy when needed.

been given mobiles and steralisers and clothes so think im sorted, oh other than a sling i got for £5 off a facebook selling site, for the school run (we live less than 5 min walk from the school, i will not be lugging a buggy around!)

our main problem is the babies room, we have 3 bedrooms (us in one and dd and ds have one each) but we hve my office downstairs, so my office will move to the living room, ds will move downstairs to my office (he's 5yo) and baby will have ds's box room (the office is bigger than his current bedroom) that is gunna be a mamouth task, can't get my head round it.

really need to decorate the whole house too, urgh i am not in the mood for these jobs!

KMR281 · 22/05/2012 11:15

hi,
I'm another one who's feeling rubbish. Feel nauseous most of the morning and only want toast with marmite, or crackers and primula cheese spread (!). Tend to feel a wee bit better in early eve, then am just totally knackered. This is so rubbish. I certainly didn't feel this bad with either of my other two.
I don't feel like eating anything healthy except melon, and just want milkshakes and breadsticks.

I've got my booking in appt next week, which I'm not looking fwd to as it will mean having lots of bloods taken, however, will then at least be over, and I will be 'officially' preggers!
I'm a bit (cough cough) older (nearly 40) so am quite worried about age-related issues ... but trying not to be.

eggsM - I am so going to NewLook - already my normal jeans are a bit tight (and to think, with ds1, I had my first scan in size 8 trousers! gone are those days!!...)

Stacey - we need to either reorganise our house alot, or just move. As we didn't win the lottery, it might be the reorganising!

CODwidow · 22/05/2012 11:32

I need to buy everything so looking to get pram, changing bag, Moses basket, nappies, some clothes (usually get given lots) I have bought a car seat second hand but from a friend so I know it's safe bargain for £10 so couldn't resist! Blush I will breastfeed so just breast pads and feeding bras I guess. Ooh all very exciting! Grin

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 22/05/2012 12:14

oh my god quavers are amazing :) that is all ;) lol

MyDaydream · 22/05/2012 12:22

I need a very lightweight pram, my house is down some very steep old stairs, I don't fancy lugging something bulky and heavy up and down whenever I want to go out. I'll probably put baby in a sling most of the time so I still have hands free to hold onto the rail with.

I've been very weepy the past couple of days, everything seems to be setting me off. I was watching something last night and DP said as a joke "are you crying again?" to which the reply was "yeah" in a sad voice wiping the tears away. I got laughed at and called cute.
I'm booking in this afternoon, hopefully I'll get a scan date next week. I need to negotiate a very early morning or weekend appointment if they do them, I start a new job at 10weeks after conceiving the day of my interview Blush, and they've made very clear that there's no time off allowed during the long training period.

Barbeasty · 22/05/2012 12:23

It's the Apple jogger that I have and love, and we're probably looking to turn into a pear this time round.

It really does depend how you're going to use it whether the travel system is worthwhile. If you live in a city and will be mostly on public transport I wouldn't bother, but for us it has been ideal.

Also, it might seem early but depending on what you go for, some pushchairs have long lead times- I think we were advised to order at least 3 months before due date.

Yy to going somewhere and having a good try of lots. And remember if you go for a travel system it can dictate your choice of car seat.

Touch wood my nausea seems to have faded, but I'm still getting quite hungry and have developed a real aversion to.coffee. Not nice sitting in meetings!

I also have an irrational fear that I'll be told I imagined it all at the scan next week.

Stacks · 22/05/2012 13:23

Afternoon all. I can't believe I thought everyone was just being quiet and not talking since last night! I've found you now though :)

I've not really thought about buying much for baby yet, this will be our first, but my sister has a DS and saved lots of things for us. We should be getting a crib, 2 travel systems (!), extra car seat, baby and maternity clothes, toys etc.

It still seems a bit soon to be making plans or buying anything, we'd just have to store it all till the end of the year, and plans would keep changing. I've thought about things a bit, and wondered about how to turn our spare room into a nursery. The main problem there is that it's quite a large room, and I'm just going to get a cot. I think I'll end up putting a sofa bed or standard bed in there, for nights when I need to stay in there, or for when guests come to visit so DH and I can give our room and sleep in with baby.

KMR281 · 22/05/2012 14:06

we had a travel system, and used the pram part and the car seat on the chassis alot, but didn't really use the buggy part - we got a foldy up type of buggy, which is much lighter.
Other essentials baby wipes, nappies (get some disposables even if you use cloth, just in case!), body suits, baby gros, baby nail scissors, baby hair brush, little hats, blankets.
I didn't like the grow-bag thingys, and just got fleecy baby gros, and used sheets and blankets.
a cot is fairly key (!), and a moses basket is nice if you can afford one (we used one with ds2, after my lovely big sis bought one for us, after I had a moan about not being able to afford one).
you'll need a high chair, but not till later.
What I found GREAT was one of those big v-shaped cushions to help with breast feeding. I used it to support my back, rather than the baby tho!
Oh, and you'll want feeding bras and breast pads. Many thereof.
Anything else you can get later, once you work out what you need.
I did use a baby bath (quicker to fill) but put in in the bath, and filled with the shower.
oh, nappy cream, get lots. Penaten is great, but you can only get it in germany. good old zinc&caster oil (?) is good.
oh god, there's so much to do!

brooke89 · 22/05/2012 15:01

Stacks I did the same, been sat here thinking wow everyone is really quiet!

Clarella · 22/05/2012 16:08

Is sudocreme zinc and Caster oil? Great stuff, still use now for the odd spot and DH's footy grazes (fingers crossed my friend's premonition of twin boys born on Xmas day is wholly wrong. Know nowt about football)

Stacks · 22/05/2012 16:32

Oh, I remember what I was going to say earlier - check your council if you're considering doing non-disposable nappies. Edinburgh has "The real nappy project" which might be nationwide (?).

You can get a trial pack (which you have to return) or a starter pack with different nappies in. There's a charge, but less than buying them retail.

blackcurrants · 22/05/2012 16:32

Clarella get thee to a sling meet! google hem or look on fb for a local one, they will let you try on lots and you can compare and get them second hand. We have really got out money's worth outof the ergo, used it to carry him out of the hospital and still using it on the back carry now, and he is nearly 2 and weighs 32lbs! I also loved the maya wrap ring sling because I could bf in it. Some perkier, long-backed women I know could bf in the ergo but I cant. Norks too big, back too short!

CODwidow · 22/05/2012 16:37

Ooo I'd forgotten about the pillow I loved mine for bf (I also used mine for my back) must add that to the list! Grin

MyDaydream · 22/05/2012 17:51

I saw the midwife today, filled out some forms, got weighed and had some blood taken, the scan date and blood results will be in the post. From what everyone has said this sounds like my booking in, but she said she needs to see me in my home next week for my booking in appointment. What else is there to go through at this stage?

ivanapoo · 22/05/2012 17:57

Grr shit day today at work - when my boss had a go at me I nearly cried / got really angry, stupid hormones. Really fed up with feeling crap and being at work. Can't wait for four joyous days off next weekend...

Starting to regret taking a promotion that means I will be doubling my workload in next three months. I just hope the whole 2nd trimester glow and energy kicks in soon!
