Hello, can I join too? Found out a week ago today that expecting DC2! DC 1 is sixteen months, this one was ( sort of) planned but still a surprise - even though it shouldn't have been! I've only just begun to lose weight after piling it on AFTER my last pregnancy so have been keeping up my gym routine to try to counteract the inevitable. According to MN calculator baby due on 29th Jan- three days after DS! Not made MW appt yet - does anyone know when I should do this? I didn't join any of the groups last pregnancy just lurked so it's nice to feel part of something especially as no one other than DH and I know! Thanks.

Norfolkinway · 29/05/2012 03:31

Hi everyone, can I join too please? Just found this site while trawling the net at silly o'clock due to insomnia!

Edd is 9th jan 2013, 8w tomo I think although it won't be confirmed until scan as I have a very short irregular cycle! I'm 25 and a very nervous but excited ftm!

So far symptoms are sore boobs, cramping, insomnia and tiredness!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 29/05/2012 07:58

Morning everyone, and hello to more new folks! waves

Still spotting - that's 23 days now. It's really mad -I keep going from thinking surely if it's the worst then there should have been a big woosh of blood by now to thinking that even without that it's been going on for too long for this to be viable. Reading about those of you being referred for early scans/appts also makes me wonder - I know it varies a lot depending on where you are/who you see but replaying the phone call with the doctor I don;t think he thought that this was really going anywhere. Ho hum...

With a positive mindset for the next five minutes at least can I ask a very dumb question? Does anyone know if it makes a different how you lie down when you go to sleep? I'm a natural sleep-on-my-side type of gal but it just feels as though I ought to lie on my back - not very hepful for actually getting comfy and sleepy though!! Is that nuts?

mrsbugsywugsy · 29/05/2012 08:52

thanks cogitosum

hello to all of the newbies! wishful I wouldn't be having an early scan if it wasn't for the spotting at the weekend. I think if you don't have bleeding or pain then there's no need.

I need a new bra too! I'm going to get one from ebay though as I will probably only wear it for a couple of weeks.

Vespa I have my first midwife appointment next week when I will be seven and a half weeks. There was a two week wait for me to see her so it might be worth booking now. I don't know if an early midwife appointment increases your chances of getting an earlyish scan. I've realised I will be 12 and a half weeks on my birthday so I'd really like it if my scan could be before that so I can tell people.

Glitter I hope you are OK. I just wondered, did you have spotting before you were pregnant? I only came off the pill a few months ago but would spot every month, I think around ovulation time. Perhaps some people are just prone to it? I'd definitely phone the Doctors again and ask about the scan though. Maybe ask to see a different Doctor? My Dr also asked me if my smear was up to date, which it was.

No idea about sleeping positions, I roll around in the night anyway.

MarasmeAbsolu · 29/05/2012 09:34

Got my booking appt sometime in June. I will be 13wks. DH is away that week and tried to get me to change it. It turns out that the appointments are one day a week only, with no availability the weeks before or after (I could get one at 18 wks). So much for "flexibility". Think big big city, with big district hospital too. Those of you who have early booking in, count yourselves lucky!

[it is second time round, and all illusions where shattered last time round - I am not expecting much]

LilBlondePessimist · 29/05/2012 10:14

Hi all! Adding myself to the thread please: lilblondepessimist (33), baby # 4, edd approx 20/01/2013. Still breastfeeding ds3 who is seven months old, and haven't had a period at all so edd is very approx! Have a scan on Thursday morning to find out dates so excited/nervous about that. Symptoms so far are: sore nipples when breastfeeding, more frequent loo trips, really really tired, diarrhea and mild nausea, which is good, because I've had three severe cases of hyperemesis resulting in hospitalization, so hoping this will be my lucky pg!! Congrats to everyone else, and I'm very sorry for the sadness and losses suffered thus far. :(

LilBlondePessimist · 29/05/2012 10:16

Oh and I live in Aus, so I may post at odd times.

Norfolkinway · 29/05/2012 10:52

My booking in app as been booked for 2wks but its still not until the 8th June! Such a long wait! I'll be 9 and a bit weeks by then! Anyone knows what the midwife does at this appt? I got a lovely pot to pee in but that's all I know!

I've just got myself some maternity bras off eBay, they were cheap and so comfy!!! (and I might have got some maternity trousers from new look that were in the sale, I like to shop/ be prepared lol)

Birdies · 29/05/2012 11:52

Hi and congrats to all the new people - must be loads of us now!!

norfolk I just had my booking apmt. Lasts about an hour. They check urine, take blood to test for all sorts of things (stds, HIV, blood group etc ect), check blood pressure. They then go through what will be your maternity notes and ask a million questions including (these are the best ones) - "are you related to your husband?" and "do you chew tobacco?" and "do you speak English?" which they still have to ask you even though you've just been chatting to the midwife in English for the last 10 minutes!! Makes the apmt more interesting anyway! You also discuss whether you would like the test for DS and you get a pack from Bounty with some free samples etc. I like the booking apmt as makes it all feel really real and exciting.

marasme I was told you had to have booking apmt at 8 or 9 weeks - could you speak to the 'supervisor of midwives' at your hospital? They can often let you see someone there instead of your local midwife?

Pascha · 29/05/2012 11:54

Hello again and congratulations and welcome to all new posters since I last popped in.

My booking in appointment was done at home on sunday morning. The only clinical thing the MW did was my blood pressure. I was given a pages-long form to fill in about my medical history, previous obstetric history, personal details, preference for place of birth etc. While I filled that in she wrote blood forms and a scan form and went through all the basic info they are required to regarding supplements, what not to eat, etc, etc, etc.

At the end she gave me the blood forms to go and get it taken, kept the scan form for her to hand in to the hospital, they will send me a date for that and results go to the midwife along with the blood results and she will ring me at around 15 weeks ish to make my next appointment with her.

The whole thing took about 45 minutes, give or take. Very relaxed.

LilBlondePessimist I am also still breastfeeding my 20mo boy. Interested to know at this point how long I will have a supply for, it already feels like its dropping at 9 weeks.

Lulabel27 · 29/05/2012 12:17

Just came back from scan - its identical twins!!!!!! will post more later I'm still in shock (but thrilled!!) x

MarasmeAbsolu · 29/05/2012 12:19

Thks Birdies - no release to community midwives until post booking in here. This is the central handling system for all antenatal appointments.
But, eh, things are getting "better" - last pregnancy I did not even get an anomaly scan at 20wks, had to pay for it.
This time round, the anomaly scan is included (but nuchal fold at wk11-13 is not, as they are still recruiting).

TBH, if they don't do nuchal fold test, there is not much point in fretting about the booking in date, but still.

LilBlondePessimist · 29/05/2012 12:26

Pascha, I'm really worried about that as I desperately want to keep feeding ds3 until he is at least 12mths. It is excruciatingly painful, but I've heard that only lasts a month or so, but if my milk dries up or he self weans (as I've also heard is possible), I'm going to feel really guilty :(
I didn't really think it would happen this quickly tbh, thought it would be closer to the 1yr mark when he maybe started sleeping for longer than 2hrs at night.

Wow! Congrats Lulabel, that really is something!! :)

LilBlondePessimist · 29/05/2012 12:29

And Birdies, I just laughed out loud when I read your post and remembered those questions..... 'Why yes, midwife I'm a tobacco chewin', incestuous kinda gal, now damn, where did I put my banjo?' :)

mrsbugsywugsy · 29/05/2012 12:44

Congratulations Lulabel!

I had my scan. I don't think it was great news but I'm also pretty confused tbh.

The scanning lady (sonographer?) seemed quite happy, she said she could see a fetal pole, a yolk sac, but no heartbeat. She said that was quite normal for 6 weeks and I should come back in a week to ten days and hopefully there would be something by then.

However then I went in to see a doctor afterwards and she said that the embryo was way too small for 6 weeks - it measured 1.7mm and it should measure 10mm. She booked me in again next week to check if it has grown but told me to expect the worst. I asked her how many weeks pregnant I should be if it only measured 1.7mm (in case my dates are wrong) and she said she didn't know, as her chart gave 10mm at 6 weeks as the smallest size. She also said she would definitely have expected to see a heartbeat. I was in shock, especially after the sonographer had sounded so positive, and didn't ask any more questions and left.

However now I'm a little unsure what to think - I didn't totally get the impression the Doctor knew what she was talking about (her badge said 'trainee' and she had to go and check the answer to my question about the size with another Doctor). But maybe I am just clutching at straws. I also feel like an idiot for not asking more questions but I was too upset and just wanted to get out of there.

SquealyB · 29/05/2012 12:48

Congrats Lulabel - that is double the excitment.

I have not heard anything from my hospital yet. GP wrote referral letter yesterday so hopefully should here something soon.

Although I have done two tests, seen the GP, have symptoms (i.e. sore and swollen boobs (am a a 36G naturally so I dread to think what size I will be by the end of this) funny taste in mouth and gone off food entirely (very unlike me) - I still think I am REALLY preganant?

Does anyone else feel this way? When does it feel "real"?

Birdies that is just hilarious -how did you keep a straight face when confronted with ridiculous questions??

SquealyB · 29/05/2012 12:51

mrs bugsywugsy - big hugs, you poor thing.

Sounds like they were not very much help at all. Perhaps once you have had time to digest all the info they have given you, you should ask to see another doctor etc for a second opinion whenever you are ready.

cartoonface · 29/05/2012 14:29

hi everyone. i think im around 6wks due 24thjan so thought id join you guys.
im very nervous as i had a missed mc in march.
so far im just tired really, boobs arent particularly sore yet, no morning sickness. i was feeling a bit sick a few days last week but it went away which worries me slightly. the midwife is going to try and get me an early scan.
bugsy sorry to hear about your scan not wishing to make you feel worse but its similar to what they told me whuich was not a lot they wont untill you have another scan because they have to give it a chance. have you googled how many weeks a feotus of that size would be?

pmgkt · 29/05/2012 14:39

Congrats lula, did you have any idea at all or was it a total shock. If you had no idea or family history that is going to take a few days to sink in, but it will make sharing your news even better

salt1 · 29/05/2012 15:09

so sorry to hear this bugsy, i wonder if nhs direct might answer some of your questions x

happyhow · 29/05/2012 16:22

Afternoon all,

I haven't been on for a while apart from lurking and reading about everyone else. Sorry to all those who are experiencing bad news. Sad

I've just had my booking in appointment - my midwife is just so lovely and happy! Feeling very at ease. Smile Got to go back on Monday to get my bloods and then she'll get my letter in for scan. Grin She put my due date a week earlier than the doctor and I had but I guess it'll change again once I've had my scan anyway.

Hi to all the newbies!!

cogitosum · 29/05/2012 16:49

Bugsy I'm really sorry to hear about your scan. Could you get another one to check if it's growing? Was it internal? If not I've heard they're really inaccurate (I'm hoping that's the case as mine was small). I don't think they are meant to be 10mm at 6 weeks I think that's 7 weeks. If your dates could be out you could be about 5 weeks which I think is right for those measurements. The sonographer prob has more experience than the doctor so if she wasn't worried hopefully that's a good sign.

Congrats lulabel how exciting!

mrsbugsywugsy · 29/05/2012 16:51

Thanks everyone. I have googled extensively, and apparently it should be more like 5mm at this stage, so it is definitely small for 6 weeks. However if I was only 5 weeks then it would be in the normal range. I have no idea why the doctor thought it should be 10mm as it doesn't say that anywhere. I guess I just have to hope that I ovulated late.

I phoned my GP, and she seemed a little more reassuring - she said that the measurements aren't really that accurate at early scans and all I can do is wait until next week.

The not knowing is just killing me.

wishfulthinking1 · 29/05/2012 16:55

Hi all-
How's it all going? No more symptoms here- boobs still tender and pretty tired but no sickness.

Cartoon- sorry to hear about the missed mc- how many weeks were you when you found out? That's something I worry about- it must be incredibly upsetting.

Mrsbugsy- so sorry youve had conflicting info- how confusing. I think you should try to see another dr. For what it's worth lots of things I've read about early scans suggest that you're unlikely to hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I can't remember why you're having an early scan- have you.been bleeding?
X

mrsbugsywugsy · 29/05/2012 17:06

ps x-posted with cogito. It was an internal scan and I have another one booked in just over a week. Are you booked in for another one? Fingers crossed for you too.

To be honest I'm wishing I hadn't had the damn thing now, it has made me more confused, not less!

Wishful I had it because of some spotting over the weekend, but it's now stopped.
