Avoid pineapple in the first trimester - when I lived in Asia it was culturally taboo for preggers ladies to eat it as it can cause early miscarriage by dilating the cervix (hence you should eat lots of it at the end to try to evict the belly dwellers!). I think tinned pineapple is ok as it doesn't contain the core of the fruit (which has the enzyme) but really really avoid pineapple juice like the plague. For constipation - I've been told kiwi fruits work really really well. I've found the cure to be a bit tricksy though as I have a fruit bowl full of kiwis but keep eating the junk food in the cupboards instead. Grin

Happy Birthday DH! My 30s have kicked my 20s ass - so it really isn't all downhill from 21. Though I did do a lot of travelling and partying in my 20s - I also had a penchant for total arsehole blokes and bad relationships ... am glad to have developed better taste in my 30s!

GTbaby · 21/04/2012 12:10

DesperateHousewife21 · 21/04/2012 12:30

Thanks for all the birthday wishes :) the bacon sarnie was deeelish, made better by having it in bed while opening cards/ presents. Dh got me series 1-3 of Mistresses and I'm going to choose some expensive good quality make up.

Still had to do the boring weekly shop this morning though.

yellowwellies I've been drinking loads of pineapple juice I love it! Should I stop?

WaitingForMe · 21/04/2012 13:08

Good news Grin

I'm bang on for my dates, good heartbeat and a wriggly little thing. It's suddenly real to DH and he's a different person. We're feeling very loved up and excited.

ValiumQueen · 21/04/2012 13:30

Great news waiting!

Thanks for the info on pineapple - bit late now though. I tend to be a bit of a rebel about lists of things to avoid. It makes me want them more. Just had an inch of wine with my lunch, and I still drink coffee, eat smoked salmon, have pate and brie at christmas is pregnant etc. When my mum was pregnant the only thing she was told to avoid was going to the zoo.

WestWinger · 21/04/2012 13:52

Waiting - hooray! So pleased for you. :)

Elizadoesdolittle · 21/04/2012 14:43

Congrats on your scan waiting lovely news.

Happy birthday dh21 sounds like you are having a lovely day.

nervous I am in the same position as you. Am out for a friends birthday tonight. I am going to drive so have an excuse but even that will raise eyebrows as I never substitute a drink for driving. Some of my friends who are going know I'm pregnant but I'm not ready to announce it to everyone yet and there will be a big group of us going. Having said that I took DD to a birthday party this morning and ended up telling some friends there. A couple of my friends announced their pregnancies so I thought why the hell not join them. Ones just had 12wk scan and ones 10 weeks. I'm 11 weeks so it's lovely to have some bump buddies. Apart from you lovely ladies of course Smile

Stuntnun · 21/04/2012 14:56

The pineapple thing is a myth. Pineapples contain bromelein which is THOUGHT to soften the cervix although there is no research into this. Some women will eat a fresh pineapple to encourage labour to start when they're fed up waiting but there isn't any actual proof whether it works or not. Pineapples only contain a small amount of bromelein so you would have to eat about seven to have any risk to your pregnancy. Also since bromelein is an enzyme it is destroyed by the canning and juicing processes so tinned pineapples and pineapple juice are definitely okay.

Happy birthday dh22! Sounds like you have a lovely day planned.

I'm in the "life just keeps getting better camp". My 20s were all about struggling and building a career, dodgy boyfriends and going out a lot. My 30s have been taken up so far with travelling for a year, meeting dh and getting married, doing up homes together and now we're making out team of 2 a team of 3. I'm much more contented now than I was when I was younger (maybe fewer highs and lows though iyswim).

Hooray for more happy scan news Grin

Have just been buying dh birthday prezzies (my dh, not our dh Wink) and managed to get me something too. Oops!

YellowWellies · 21/04/2012 15:22

It might be considered a myth but pineapple is a key part of illegal abortions in many parts of Asia. Yes you have to eat about 7 - the danger is with the juice as that is often made from pulping the cores (the cheapest bit, but also the bit with the enzyme) so you could easily be glugging the cores of 10+ pineapples in one carton. If you are craving pineapple go for the tinned stuff. I really really wouldn't touch the juice. And I'm chilled out with a little bit of wine, smoked salmon, even slightly soft eggs and all sorts of other no-nos. It's probably cos I lived in Asia but pineapple for me is a no no - pregnant western women eating it in public would get a lot of shit from passers by (and often not have a clue why they were being yelled at), where I lived as the locals thought they didn't care about their unborn babies.

TheDetective · 21/04/2012 16:01

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to DH, happy birthday to yoooooooooooooooooooooou!!!

If it makes you feel any better, I cried when I turned 22 and 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27! but then I cry at lots of things, so its nothing unusual!

I am looking forward to my 30's which is odd. Considering I cried!

You know I said last night, Virgin had fixed my broadband? IT WENT OFF AGAIN!!! I now have yet another engineer coming out tomorrow. I think it is taking the pee now, its been 6 months of intermittent internet! I'm slowly going bonkers with them. They have put me down as an 'escalated repair' or some such thing. I just want to leave them now, and they are refusing!

I also had a letter from my ward manager telling me I had to attend a sickness/absence meeting on 25/4 2.30pm. My scan/booking in is on the same day at 3.45pm, and is a good 30 mins away from work, that is if there is no traffic, and I am able to park straight away.

I have emailed work to tell them of the same, and that they will have to rearrange. I fail to see the need for the face to face appointment - they know what is wrong with me, and that it is pregnancy related. Pregnancy related sickness does not come under the normal sickness/absence policy. So why the need for the meeting - I have both the mat. policy and the sickness policy to refer to. The sickness policy talks about a meeting if you are off for 4 weeks, however the mat. policy says not to follow sickness policy if off sick with pregnancy related conditions.

I don't really want to go, not because I have anything to hide or I am concerned, but purely because it could fall on a 'bad' day, where having a shower, getting dressed and doing the 15 mile drive is impossible. I am having good days, true. I seem to have 2/3 good days, followed by 1/2 bad days. It has improved over the last 8/9 days. Which is why I am hoping to return to work on May 1st, and have told work this.

Also, in the maternity policy, I have noted that it says I do not accrue bank holidays during maternity leave. Going to have to investigate this, as I am sure that this isn't the case. My leave is 27 days plus 8 days, it doesn't state bank holidays. I think this is because it is shift work and you don't automatically have a working day falling on a BH. Must find out more. Work just keep on screwing me over! And there was me thinking that pregnant employees and those on maternity leave where not supposed to suffer detrimental treatment due to it, and have the same rights/contractual benefits, otherwise it would be sex discrimination.

Eeeeh, its fun in the Detective household at the minute!!

TheDetective · 21/04/2012 16:02

Congratulations waiting excellent news! Yay! Grin

ValiumQueen · 21/04/2012 16:22

Detective, you do not accrue BH with NHS, because you will be off anyway when they happen. Obviously any that happen outside your mat leave will still be yours.

Yellow very interesting hearing more about pineapples. I will avoid the juice, but have tinned stuff. I only occasionally have fresh stuff.

TheDetective · 21/04/2012 16:25

Tut. sulks

:(

DesperateHousewife21 · 21/04/2012 16:26

waiting yay great news!

tomato Ahh shame I wouldn't say no to a pressie! What did you buy your dh (and yourself!)?

Thanks for all the lovely birthday messages I feel v popular today!
(35 messages on fb today so far!)

Stuntnun · 21/04/2012 18:15

The pineapple juice I have is long life so it has been pasteurised which would 'kill' denature any enzymes in it do I think it's safe enough. As YellowWellies says avoid large quantities of fresh pineapple and freshly juiced pineapple. The tinned stuff is definitely okay too.

Woooo, what's going on with all the fruit ladies? Last week we were munching our way through sugary lard, this week it all about the colourful stuff!

Yesterday I ate 2 punnets of strawberries, 2 punnets of grapes and countless tomatoes. Today I've eaten 4 oranges, and apple, a banana and 2 plums, I usually have to force fruit into my gob! On the upside, I only have to sit on the loo and things just pour out of my backside Grin, sorry, but it made me lol!

TheDetective · 21/04/2012 18:48

Shelly I'm eating fruit like its going out of fashion, and drinking tonnes of fresh orange. I must be REALLY bunged up.... Shock

applepieinthesky · 21/04/2012 18:51

I went food shopping yesterday and I bought loads of fruit - blackberries, strawberries, mango, kiwi, pineapple, apples, grapes.

Also got three packets of fruit mentos and scoffed two on the drive home.

tomatoplantproject · 21/04/2012 18:56

Main prezzie is a new rucksack for him to cycle with (he's just bought a new bike) plus some bits inc a book for expectant dads Grin

What did you get spoiled with??

tomatoplantproject · 21/04/2012 18:58

And baby brain forgot the other q - a new top that's baggy and will accommodate a bump. Bought in Xl and the lady serving asked a couple of times if I was sure cos I looked a m to her!

ShellyBobbs · 21/04/2012 18:58

Detective & Apple, I know, what's going on? It's going to cost a fortune at this rate, and I'm back on the Orange pop, talk about bloated lol!

TheDetective · 21/04/2012 19:04

I paid £2.10 for 4 oranges yesterday. I could of cried! I could of had 18 bags of crisps for that!!

ShellyBobbs · 21/04/2012 19:14

Lol, you could have had both for that at Aldi, I love it there!
