Birth Story:

Woke up at 5am on Friday and spent an hour panicking about lack of movement, to the point where we got the doppler out Blush. Got to the hospital at 7.45am, after brief pit stop at McDs to feed DH - just as well we did, as things turned out! Allocated a private room (score!) in the ante-natal ward, had brief check (hb, bp etc) and given two hospital gowns to put on, one forwards and one backwards for modesty. Weirdly, had to keep my own shoes on to walk down to the labour ward and theatre. In the labour ward, DH taken away to put scrubs on, I signed consent form for spinal and we went into the operating theatre at 9am. Heaps of ppl milling around looking official. Anaesthetist put canula in my hand and attached saline solution, BP cuff went on other arm and they got me to lean forward over a pillow and painted my back with iodine ready for the local anaesthetic before the spinal. At this point, someone sticks their head in and says 'hold it, there's a prolapse coming down'. Everyone freezes, and 2 minutes later it's confirmed and we had to get out of there pronto. Less than 3 minutes later they would have had the spinal in and we would have been unstoppable.

We were sent to wait in a delivery room, and after about half an hour the consultant came in, apologised for the delay and said we should be good to go as soon as the theatre was cleaned up. Then 5 minutes later the MW came back and said another emergency had come in. So we kicked our heels, with me getting v hungry and thirsty and hot and both of us getting more nervous and tense by the minute.

We went back into the operating theatre at 12, and this time there was much less chit-chat - they got the spinal in as fast as they could just in case we got interrupted again. The local anaesthetic didn't hurt very much - I'd heard bad stories but it was nothing. They had to flush out the canula because it had got a bit clogged during all the waiting and that was painful. The spinal itself went in and they got me to lie down flat and then tilted the bed slightly sideways. The anaesthetist sprayed me with something icy cold, on the arm as a test, and then worked her way up my tummy and I could feel that something was spraying on me but I couldn't feel hot or cold until she got to my chest, at which point it suddenly went icy. Then she asked what she was doing to my tummy, and it felt like she was poking it, but she said no, she had her fingernails dug right in. She asked DH to look and verify it (interesting piece of patient psychology there!) and explained that although I would feel tugging and pressure, I wouldn't feel any pain. And that's pretty much exactly what happened. I could feel movement, but nothing hurt.

They got started and Bean was born very quickly - within 5 minutes, at 12.23. The consultant asked DH to stand up so he could see her being born, and she was lifted out and she cried as they lifted her. I got a quick glimpse and then the MW and DH took her off to the next room to be weighed and dried. She started really howling in there - I could hear her crying and DH said it was the toweling down that she didn't like. Then they brought her back through and put her on my chest while they finished sewing me up. This didn't take very long and before I knew it, the consultant was saying she'd had to do a slight V shape but everything had gone smoothly and there had been no problems. I was through in the recovery room by 12.40, and Bean snuggled on my chest and snuffled a bit but didn't really try to feed. DH started texting everyone and after maybe 45 minutes they wheeled me back upstairs to my room and we settled in.

She is so tiny and perfect and beautiful! 6lb 5 seems to be pretty small - she fits the Tiny Baby stuff from Mothercare perfectly even though that's for babies of 5lbs. She took an hour or so after birth to really start looking for food, although I tried feeding her a few times and gradually she got the message. Over the past 3 days her bite has got much stronger and she's started feeding more intensely. We were let out on Sunday afternoon and she's been feeding pretty well and has pooped more than I was expecting, so I think that's good. The only thing is that she has a slight heart murmur, but this is apparently really common and hopefully it will be gone by her 6 week check. She's been referred to the children's hospital for a kidney follow-up, but the first thing she did was pee on the MW while she was being weighed, so they don't seem concerned. She seems to be peeing plenty.

Pain-wise after the CS, it took about 6 hours before my feet felt normal again, so no pain all that time. I don't think I really felt any pain except twinges for the first 24 hours. The first night was pretty grim because I was so hot - I still had the catheter in and couldn't move much, they wouldn't let me have the window open and everything in the bed seemed to be made of plastic and sticking to me (catheter tube, incontinence pad thing, horrible plastic pillows). I was running with sweat and I was scared I was overheating Bean, who I kept in the bed with me most of the night because I couldn't get her out of her cot on my own. The catheter came out the next morning and then they got me up and in the shower not long after that. Getting up twinged, but no more than that, really. It feels hot, like a burn, when it hurts. They had me peel the dressing off in the shower and then DH helped me get dressed in a clean nightie and pants and after that I was much more comfortable. I've now had a look at the scar with a mirror and it's very thin. I think it'll be very discreet. My tummy feels a bit numb between scar and belly button, but hopefully that'll wear off eventually. I'm pretty mobile today, although to be fair I haven't tried to do much. It hurts a bit pulling myself into a vertical sitting position but not badly. I'm on paracetamol and dicloflex, with dihydracodeine if I think I need it, and although I took a dihydracodeine today that was mainly as a preventative measure before I attempted getting in the bath. It didn't sting in the bath either, which I had been worried about. Oh, I'll tell you what hurt - wind! Blush On Sunday I had really bad stomach cramps, like period pain and as if someone had tied a string round my middle and pulled tight. I didn't know what it was - thought it might be afterpains, but it was wind. I had been taking peppermint oil capsules, but either they didn't work or else it would have been much worse without them.

Tomorrow we're going to try a brief walk, and it's also DD1's birthday so we'll be taking Maia down to the cemetery. Not sure how the Day 3/4 baby blues are going to cope with that, but hopefully it won't be too bad. I got pretty upset and cried last night because the dog is totally freaked out by Bean - I sat on the sofa and started feeding her and she was crying, and the dog jumped up next to me and and got hold of the foot of her babygro in his teeth. He was smacked and hustled back down again, but started whining and fretting whenever she made a sound and staring at her intently and it was quite scary. I suggested putting his cage in the bedroom because he usually sleeps on the bed and I didn't want him to feel too marginalised in case it made things worse. Last night he whined and fretted whenever she cried, but DH spent lots of time introducing him to her calmly today and basically setting boundaries. I wouldn't dare leave him in the room with her unsupervised, but things have progressed to the point where it's definitely fear, not aggression - he shakes, whimpers and howls when she cries. Luckily DH has 4 weeks at home and we can spend plenty of time working on it. He's a rescue dog and we don't know if he's lost a home when a new baby arrived in the past - we know he's good with older kids (ie, ages 1 and up), so this took us by surprise.

This is a mammoth post and I should have been sleeping! Bean has started to stir again so I'd better go and try feeding before I aim for some sleep.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 13/03/2012 01:44

Oooooooo Too thank you for the birth story! That's really encouraging! Can I just ask a couple of q's? Firstly did you have a wound drain? Also, what did they use to close the wound (dissolvable stitches?). Also, you mentioned before that you wouldn't have to continue the Fragmin injections after leaving the hospital - is that still the case despite being able to leave so soon? Oh, and you mentioned wind but did you also get the killer constipation I've heard of? (I can honestly say that's the cheekiest question I've ever asked anyone!!! Please please please feel free to ignore that one if you don't want to answer!)

Despite all my q's I really found your birth story hugely helpful, so thank you for posting! Congratulations again on the gorgeous Maia! It sounds like bfing is going well and you're coping with the recovery amazingly, so well done!

Sounds like a tricky situation with the dog, but it's great your DH will be around for several weeks to really work on it. It's such early days as well, hopefully within a couple of days he'll be used to the crying and all will be well.

I hope Purple is having a good night, as well as all the No Brooking Mamas (NBMs!)

I think we have a slight lull coming up now, with Fishcake due to kick off the next round in about 3 weeks I think? Is that right? With 5 No Brooking babies to our credit so far will the NBMs be setting up a postnatal thread now? Personally I'm hoping you'll stick around here and keep sharing your wisdom, but if you do move over please let us know where to stalk the new thread! Grin

too I'd completely forgotten about the heat after my cs. I literally dripped with sweat for a couple of days. The first night was ridiculous - I can't believe I'd totally forgotten about it! Thank you so much for sharing your story. Good luck for today. I can't imagine the mixed emotions you are feeling. Will be thinking of you.

scream are you seeing consultant c today? Good luck and fingers crossed they listen to sense and allow you the option of a cs. I didn't get constipation but did make sure I drank loads and ate a good amountif fruit etc to ensure there wasn't undue straining Blush

farfallarocks · 13/03/2012 08:57

Oh too what a lovely story :)

Huge congrats team purple

Oh this is so exciting, so may brooking babies :)

Has Aubers had her baby yet? She must have done.

PopcornMouseInBoots · 13/03/2012 09:56

Envy Biscuits - I'm only 10 weeks in and I'd give my left kidney well not really for a rare steak topped with melted stilton :o

Lovely birth story too!

hawthers · 13/03/2012 10:11

And congrats purple sorry to hear the mode of arrival wasn't as you have wished. But you have a lovely healthy little boy who I bet smells divine Grin

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 13/03/2012 10:44

Thanks Hawthers, you're right my appt with consultant C is today, at 2.20. I feel surprisingly nervous! I don't think this appt is going to result in an agreed cs unfortunately, I think they'll fight it harder than that, so I'm trying to focus on just moving things forward in a positive direction. (I'm saying all this in a calm rational way but I'll still be gutted coming out of this appt without resolution!)

Anyways I need to just do the best I can. Any No Brooking that can be spared would be greatly appreciated! At least my headache seems to finally FINALLY be on the way out! It only hurts in direct sunlight now. LO seems to have perked up slightly overnight too. I'm going to take this as a sign that she's No Brooking for our appt this afternoon as well! Grin

Thanks for the advice re fruit and water! Duly noted and will be followed!

Are everyone else's appts tom? The scans for Farfalla, Dream and Fishcake? The mw appt for Popcorn? Have I missed out anyone? I need to make I'm keeping up my end of the No Brooking!

Did any all of the new (again) mamas get a good night's sleep?

Lovely birth story Too As I was reading about your dog it made me wonder whether your dog is showing concern about maia when she cries rather than disliking her. I'm concerned my cat is not going to react well when our baby arrives. Female cat though if that makes a difference.

I finally have a booking in appt with mw! They tried to phone yesterday but I wasn't in so they have posted my pack and appt letter. Spoke to them today and my appt is monday 19th then my scan is fri 23rd lol. :o

Hope everyone is ok and having a good day!

fishcakefoxtrot · 13/03/2012 11:00

Grr wrote a big post this morning and now it's not here! So you will have to deprived of my early morning sparkling wit and make do with a rehash Wink

Purple congratulations!! Thanks. Really sorry to hear that things didn't go to plan but also really glad to hear that both of you are ok and home already. I am also glad to hear that I am not the only one who feels remarkably territorial about a new baby. I actually asked for DD back on a few occasions- it was like a primal instinct. I hate baby pass the parcel!

Can I ask- were there any indicators that your blood pressure had gone up? Or is it possible that actually a sweep followed by urgent monitoring actually caused your blood pressure to rise? My bp is pretty reactive to stressful situations- I got a 'bad' reading at my last dr appointment because we were talking about studying statistics! The follow up reading had gone back to 'good' levels Confused.

Too your birth story made me a bit weepy- it really reminds me of DD's arrival. She was born shortly after midday too and I so remember that wait in the morning.
Also, I had horrid night sweats too for a few days. It was gross!
I hope your dog is settling down. Mine is really nervy anyway and he found the whole arrival of a new person very stressful. He soon came to appreciate the walks with the pram though!

How is the feeding going? I hope you got plenty of support in the hospital.

Scream GOOD LUCK today, I really hope you can have a sensible conversation with Consultant C. The fact that they have agreed to see you has got to a good sign. Have you got copies of your letters to take in case you forget things? Or it might be worth printing out a couple of your posts on here to act as reminders for you, just in case?

Also, I am so glad to hear that yor LO is moving about it more. It's not good when these pesky babies go quiet. And I hope your head is feeling better.

I can answer a couple of your questions to Too about my CS experience, if that's any help?
My wound was closed with staples, which worked really well for me. They were removed by the midwife at home, about 5 days later. You can hardly see the scar now. I didn't have a drain and I don't know anyone who did.
I didn't get particularly constipated. However I was aware that this could be a possibility, particularly with codeine being the painkiller of choice, so DH brought me several large green salads with nuts, seeds etc to eat in hospital (also v good for iron) which helped. The first poo was still slightly traumatic but it seems that can be the case whatever the mode of delivery!

It is going to be a big brooking day tomorrow. I will be brooking for everyone who has appointments while thinking nice, calm thoughts for my own!

PopcornMouseInBoots · 13/03/2012 11:01

Our cats will hate a baby in the house... one of them runs upstairs and hides under the bed when the doorbell goes, no idea how he'll cope with a screaming baby and toddler tail-pulling :o :o

Yay for a booking in appt, cakes! I don't have a scan booked yet, I'm hoping the MW will sort it out tomorrow Confused

Biscuitsandtea · 13/03/2012 11:05

Oooh good luck Scream - will be keeping everything crossed for you. And I'm really pleased the baby is more mobile now the headache is going off - I bet that was why she was being so quiet?

And yes yes, good luck for all the forthcoming appts. Look forward to some excellent updates Smile

Didn't do too bad for sleep here - and feel remarkably awake for having been up - am sure it'll catch up with me eventually!

fishcakefoxtrot · 13/03/2012 11:07

Dream I realise I didn't answer your question about what happened at 35 weeks last time- this was the point where concerns about DD's size were first flagged up, and from this point her growth seemed to tail right off. However as she is still a wee thing it is hard to know how much she was always going to be a wee one.

The main thing that caused the concern, and was thought to inhibiting DD's growth, was a rise in bp- it just went up and up from this point until I was admitted, given drugs, and then DD delivered. I think it is this that I am most concerned about. I had to go for monitoring every couple of days and they wanted to admit me about a week before I actually went in. I really, really don't want a repeat of that! It was very stressful and of course this time I have DD to look after. And I really wouldn't want to have the baby before 37 weeks at the absolute earliest.

Also, I haven't actually finished work yet and I know this should be the least of my concerns but I have a report that has to be finished in a fortnight...

PopcornMouseInBoots · 13/03/2012 11:22

Ooo, good luck scream ! :)

PopcornMouseInBoots · 13/03/2012 11:53

Has anyone seen this? The video's really lovely (apologies for the Daily Fail link )

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2113407/From-pregnant-giving-birth-90-seconds-Time-lapse-video-shows-mother-changes-time.html

cakes82 · 13/03/2012 11:59

Thanks Pop for posting the link. That is really clever, not sure it goes well with pg hormones though lol

scarletfingernail · 13/03/2012 13:15

Brooking for scream today.

Lovely birth story Too, hope your dog settles down soon.

Had a MW appt this morning. The baby is transverse, the same as DS was. Have a scan next week but if it's the same I expect they'll start talking about ECV's again. I need to get on that ball more often.

Biscuitsandtea · 13/03/2012 13:38

Oooh come on miniscarlet get yourself head down! Don't make Mummy have an ECV. On the topic of ECVs, my yoga lady used to swear by some sort of candle thing to turn breech babies. Apparently it worked for a lot of her students and there was one lady who had had it done and said she could feel the baby trying to turn every time the candle was pit near her foot. To be fair it never worked for her but then the ECV didn't work for her either and she ended up with a CS because the baby was stuck. Might be worth looking into - i'll see if I can remember what it was called?

I have everything crossed for Scream and her entourage this afternoon. Come on Consultant C - show us what you're made of Smile.

We've just had our day 5 mw visit and E had only lost 8oz which is 5% of his birth weight so I'll take that Smile. Next challenge is to put it back on!!!

Hope everyone else is well xx

DreamingOfPeace · 13/03/2012 14:28

Right brookers:

scream none of this discussion bollocks business. Today you get an ELCS date. End of.

Tomorrow fishcake has super low (but not scary low) BP and a positive growth scan with nice chubby baby.

popcorn meets a lovely mw and gets booked in

scarlet bounces on the ball, then feels baby engage (we've loads of time yet though scarlet, you're 35 weeks on Fri, no?)

And then on Thursday I clarify that growth scans are inaccurate and my twin 2 is still growing well.

All bf boys will stop being so idle and latch on properly.

All babies will start sleeping longer stretches at night.

And we are having no ifs or buts about it!!!

pommedechocolat · 13/03/2012 15:05

dream - growth scans have never worked for me. Dd1 was predicted 80th percentile and dd2 just 25th percentile with some iugr worries at 24 weeks. Both came out around 50th!

biscuits - yay for small weight loss!

Go scream, brooking lots.

Loving too's story.

Brooking for everyone else too.

We're waiting for the health visitor here. Abbie feeding dd1 colouring a little uncontrollably. We managed lunch with my mum in costa today so feeling good!

pommedechocolat · 13/03/2012 15:16

Baby scarlet - get moving! Head down is the place to be. Mummy does not need EVC on top of her builder issues!

pommedechocolat · 13/03/2012 15:16

ECV even!

fishcakefoxtrot · 13/03/2012 15:51

Yes, head down please miniscarlet. apart from anything else, transverse sounds jolly uncomfortable for your mother Confused

PopcornMouseInBoots · 13/03/2012 16:12

I think I have my first odd pregnancy craving (besides the buckets of fresh fruit I've been eating) - pickled cabbage. Can't get enough of the stuff. Crazy.

fishcakefoxtrot · 13/03/2012 16:25

A friend of mine swore by that for morning sickness popcorn! She actually started making her own, she loved it so much. can't say it appeals myself...

PopcornMouseInBoots · 13/03/2012 16:30

Ohhh it's lovely, fishcake - I got a big box of it from the local turkish takeaway with chips yesterday and it's not super pickled (I guess they add water too), it's quite a mild peppery flavour. Yum! I have a recipe I'm going to give a go :)
