I don't think there is an age limit. It just depends on the hospital hwether they do it or not. Last time the hospital didn't offer them so I had to go to another and pay.

I have since moved so getting it free this time as new area hospital offers it iyswim.

sparkly1 · 04/03/2006 09:28

I had no idea. It was 7 years ago when went through this with dd and I've forgotten most of it in that time. I only had a dating scan, normal 20 week scan and that was it. Other than other scans because of other problems. I'll have ask my midwife though I'm not seeing her till end of the month.

cece · 04/03/2006 09:39

If you want a nuchal you need to sort it out fairly soon as they have a very specific time frame when they can be done.

I left it to 12 week scan to discover my hospital didn't do it last time and had 7 days to sort out private one. Was very lucky that the other hospital had a space the following week.

sparkly1 · 04/03/2006 09:42

I've got to see my gp next week anyway about my way too sore boob so will ask her about that then. I kept hoping that my dating scan appt would be done soon but that's not looking to be the case. My friend who is going to get hers done next Friday will be 12 weeks almost exactly.

booge · 04/03/2006 12:44

I'm really not sure whether to have an OSCAR test this time or not. I'll be 36 in October. We did last time but I don't know whether it is worth the £180.

The thing is I need to work out at what level of risk I would go ahead and have an amnio or cvs as they both carry a 1 in 200 risk of miscarriage. Even then I don't know if I would terminate or not if the amnio was positive for Downs. As my midwife said there are so many things you can't screen for eg Autism that could be more difficult than looking after a Downs child and there are different levels of disability and it could be a milder case. But then I worry if we did have a child with Downs who would look after him/her when we die and often Downs children end up with Altzheimers by their 30's... I just don't know what to do but I think on balance we probably won't.

Hi everyone hope you are having a good weekend.

We've had a nice day-walk and (cold) picnic in the park, country drive to see some alpacas (which apparently are different to llamas but either way there is a farm with loads of them near here) and then took DD to the swings. We did however have a serious poo incident during our country drive that ended up going all over the car. Really need to get on the case with potty training.

Booge I'm not sure what an OSCAR test is-is it checking for abnormalities? I'm undecided about a CVS. I have my nuchal scan on 30th March and, because of my history, can have a CVS as well if I want. Am hoping to avoid one really but then maybe I will just need to know. My midwife and Kings (where I am having the scan) have said that we have to be positive and approach this as a normal pregnancy but it is hard to do that.

GemmityGem hope that the scan went well.

wuzzlefraggle · 04/03/2006 19:36

hello everyone. i hope that you all are taking it easy :)

Gem -- i hope that your scan went well. oh, and i know what you mean about the crying for no reason thing, ive had a few little out bursts for no reason at all

Twinkle - i hope that you are feeling better now

the all day nausea has really started to kick in now, so im really milking the help from dp Grin lol. xox

booge · 04/03/2006 20:01

The OSCAR includes the nuchal scan and is the option here in Bristol as nothing is offered on the NHS. This is the blurb...

"Another test now available for Down's syndrome is the OSCAR (One Stop Clinic for the Assessment of Risk). This test involves a nuchal translucency scan and a blood test taken at the same time. It measures levels of the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadatrophin) and the protein PAPP-A (Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein) in your blood. Pregnancies affected by Down's syndrome tend to have higher hormones and lower proteins than normal. The nuchal scan alone can pick up 75 per cent of Down's babies but by combining it with the blood test, the detection rate is 90 per cent."

twinkle183 · 04/03/2006 20:56

Hi guys thanks for all the well wishes, I've managed to calm down... but when I got the quote for fixing the car i nearly passed out! £425 for a little scratch, couldn't believe.

Just read the thread and in cornwall where I live its the norm to have a blood test between 15-19 wks to test for spina bifida and downs syndrome. They just do it despite your age as I have just turned 25. I don't know whether that information helps.

marthahm · 04/03/2006 21:53

Hi,I'm so pleased to have found this site. am 8 wks pg due13th october, and have been desperate to talk to others in the same boat. am finding it tough as feel really nauseous constantly (even when wake in middle of night) and could sleep for Britain. i'm so sorry for all of you who have been having bleeding worriesSad

cece · 04/03/2006 21:56

Hi there and welcome marthahm have you got any other children or is this your first?

marthahm · 04/03/2006 22:07

hi cece, no, this is the first time. was all a bit of a surprise... 1 relaxed night with husband to be 2 weeks before wedding. there was i thinking i had the world's longest pmt bout post honeymoon etc. when my husband suggested we take a test as a precaution.am pleased but still slightly in shock

cece · 04/03/2006 22:10

Congrats Grin

riley3 · 04/03/2006 23:15

The OSCAR that Booge is thinking about is exactly what I'm getting on the NHS (Exeter). It is the nuchal scan plus a "combined" blood test. I will (as last time) use the results of this to decide whether to go for diagnostic testing such as amnio.

Cece - don't worry. Even at my advanced age many many more are normal than abnormal. Also no good to worry - just be glad the test is there as early as it is.... I am before you so I hope Wink to reassure you with my nice, normal 40 year old result!

Completely another subject (well ok, still about pgcy) I am incredibly dizzy and breathless all the time at the mo'. The slightest bit of exertion has me panting like I've run a mile. I'm a bit overweight, but not huge, not put any weight on so far (10 weeks now) and used to be moderately fit. I'm also knackered all the time and haven't done a bit of exercise but am wondering about the breathless thing??

Gemmitygem · 05/03/2006 06:07

Welcome Martha!

I have good news about scan! Grin Smile Grin

Equipment was fine, she said I didn't need to drink, did abdominal ultrasound and saw everything clearly, heard heartbeat!! Incredibly moving for me and DH hearing the heartbeat, esp because we didn't think you could hear it that early (I'm 8 weeks, 6 weeks gestation)..

Anyway little blob was in there safely and doing fine! She put it at 6w1day gestation, I reckon I'm 6w3days, so that's ok. So very very relieved! She said the bleeding at the beginning of Feb was a mystery but certainly had not harmed the embryo or sac...

The only thing was, she said the top of the womb was not flat but had a bump on it. I didn't understand the Russian word she used for the bump, and forgot it by the time I got home so couldn't look it up. Has anyone else had this? She said it was quite common and would prob stretch as the baby grew..

Anyway it's all very exciting now!

Hope everyone's enjoying the weekend,

A very happy Gemmitygem!

nowanearlyNicemum · 05/03/2006 08:45

great news about the scan Gemmitygem

congratulations Marthahm, wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy

hope the rest of you are fine and dandy this morning. I was sick all day yesterday but am feeling remarkably spritely this morning - just as well as the flat is a tip and I really need to do something about it.

cece · 05/03/2006 08:47

Quite a few people seem to be getting sick! Luckily none for me... Glad you are feeling better this morning

salsamama · 05/03/2006 10:00

Hi Ladies, and welcome martham. There was I telling dh that it seemed I'd escaped having morning sickness this time round when the smell of ds1's formula made me raucously sick. Lucky toilet was so close to kitchen. Also noticing the same cravings and aversions as had last time. Have gone off peppermint tea, in fact anything that smells or tastes of mint, and suddenly fond of tomatoes.

Didn't have the immense tiredness in last pg but this time round can hardly keep my eyes open. Will have to start propping eyelids open with matchsticks or something to get through meetings with boss at work Grin.

Good luck to all those meeting MWs and having scans. I haven't been summoned yet - my dr's is bit chaotic and my notes, since moving practice, seem to have been lost in the ether...tishh Angry

Anyone on this thread planning to find out the sex?

sparkly1 · 05/03/2006 10:46

Gem, great news about the scan! Glad it went so well and you got to see everything.

We'll probably find out the sex even though I didn't with dd. I think it will help her adjustment if we can tell her she's having either a brother or sister. We haven't yet told her but I know she'll have her heart set on a sister so if it's not she'll need some time to get used to the idea.

Feel very lazy today but off out later to shop with my friend who is the one about 5 weeks ahead of me pregnancy wise. We're off to look at maternity stuff. She definitely needs them already and I might as well have a look around at the same time.

FirstNikki · 05/03/2006 13:27

Great news about scan Gem ! Well Done Smile

riley3 · 05/03/2006 15:36

Oh ladies - I might be another one on the way out. Sad. Out shopping today, went to the loo - pink on wiping (tmi) and panty liner covered in brown and pink (way tmi I know). Also soreness in boobs has suddenly, completely gone. I rushed home and bleeding appears to have stopped. Totally shaken up. Will phone mw tomorrow (not going to work regardless). I should be 9-10 weeks so it's all relatively late compared to other stories. But then there is the issue of my age....

Keep your fingers crossed for me everyone!!! Smile

nowanearlyNicemum · 05/03/2006 15:43

oh riley3, am keeping everything crossed for you.
here's hoping that the bleeding is harmless, like it has been for several others on this thread
put your feet up and take care of yourself anyway.

nowanearlyNicemum · 05/03/2006 15:45

salsamama, sorry you're feeling ick. I had just been feeling remarkably smug about the fact that I hadn't been sick when mid week I started puking! serves me right!
definitely don't want to know the sex - didn't with dd either.

FirstNikki · 05/03/2006 15:50

oh riley sorry to hear of your worries hun just get some rest and try not to worry too much. Glad you aren't going work and be sure to contact the dr or mw or even epu if you have any worries. It really could be all ok you know there has been a few scares on here but they are fine. Best of luck and I will check on your progress hoping its nothing. xxx {{{hugs}}}

sparkly1 · 05/03/2006 17:13

Riley, I hope it's nothing to worry about. I've said before on here that when I was pg with dd I didn't know for the first 9 weeks because I thought I'd had my period - the bleeding lasted for days. Please rest and make sure you phone your doctor or epu tomorrow.

Thinking of you x
