peanuts i have been superweepy all day, shitting myself silly over the epidural and actually scared of going into labour tonight or tomorrow. My belly is really tight and i'm having a lot of BH's Now i have my head round it I want a c sec I don't want nature to spring any suprises on me now.

Does anyone kow if they let you have entenox while they do the epidural? last time I had an epidural i had already been in labour for some time and had g&a. This time i'm worried about being stone cold sober.

I have to be there at 8am. Nil by mouth from midnight, 6am is a bit bloody ridiculous-i'll bet youre waiting around for ages. I swear some hospitals like to wear you out before you even begin.

I also want to stay up really late and be silly. Make the most of this "normality" before it all changes. DH's folks are here tomorrow night so this is our last night of just us, i have sat at the pc all night and he's been doing shopping and other things. Silly but I needed to escape rather than be focused on the events.

peanuts777 · 16/01/2012 22:59

fish Exactly!?! Having an epidural in pain is one thing, but I just can't imagine walking into theatre on Wednesday morning and dealing with that at all! hmmm gas and air you say. That s a good idea, but they may not allow it as it can make you nauseous....? I was thinking Valium!

The other thing my friend told me is that her anaesthetist [emergency c section] made her sit up and bend forward for the procedure, whereas I lay down on my side. I don't know why that makes a huge difference to me, but it does.
I'm terrified I might straighten up or flinch if I have to endure it sitting and not laying down. What did they do to you last time?

Sorry, you're trying not tot think about it tonight Blush I am upstairs in bed post- bath and my hubby is hiding from me downstairs I think because I've been crying and so horribly grumpy this evening.

Do you really feel labourey or do you think you are just having HBs? Why are you having an ELCS if you don't mind me asking...?

saladcreamwitheverything · 17/01/2012 00:16

I've started with some contractions....!

About three hours ago. Been timing them with iPad application...got an average of six minutes apart for last hour. Not too painful at the moment but starting to go around my back now...maybe the induction tomorrow (well today now, seeing its after midnight!) won't be necessary! [hopeful emoticon]

Think it's gonna be a long night Shock

peanuts777 · 17/01/2012 00:22

Pooh salad fx they keep going. Keep moving! I am sending you scrunchy vibes so you can have the birth you want.........
Good luck!

peanuts777 · 17/01/2012 00:23

Pooh salad? Not "pooh" but " oooh". My water retentive fat clumsy digits are not playing ball any more..

addictediam · 17/01/2012 00:31

Been teary here all day too.

They may allow gas and air if your really nervous. I had the epi sat up, first they put a local anistetic in my back then I didn't feel the actual needle going in.

Salad really hoping this goes somewhere for you.

Dd has decided. She doesn't want to sleep so ive given up fighting with her and am now sat watching her play while she fights sleep. I think she may be. going back to bed soon

saladcreamwitheverything · 17/01/2012 01:15

Grin @ pooh salad!

I don't really fancy an epidural either and am going to avoid if I possibly can.
Don't mind anything else but I really don't fancy something going in my spine. My friend is going in for her CS tomorrow (today!) at 8, we are at the same hospital so at this rate the race will be on as to who gets there first!

Contractions are getting more intense now but my waters still appear to be intact...sent DH to bed, don't think I'll be getting any shut eye but there's no point both of us being up!

Not quite sure when to ring hospital, when they're five minutes-ish apart and very painful I'm guessing?!

Hope you all get some kip soon x

peanuts777 · 17/01/2012 01:58

Pooh salad! I know. No thank you?! I'm chuckling away to myself.

Addicted - sorry you're ready tonight. I have got it all out of system and turned myself around by searching the chat bit for mumsnet classics. Some of which were heartwarming and some bloody hilarious.

I had forgotten about the local anaesthetic too, so thank you for reminding me :-)

Salad - I'm going to try and sleep, but if I cant I will check in on you and see how you're diddling. Exciting! I have a good feeling you're going to do great and your little lamb chop will be here soon......FX!

peanuts777 · 17/01/2012 02:02

Sorry. I need to switch off my autocorrect. Teary not ready. Might have to read that damnyouautocorrect thing again. HYSTERICAL!

Night night for now xx

Moobee · 17/01/2012 05:51

Hi girls, just read last couple of posts and noticed some talk of epidurals. I had one (and I was on gas and air but it didn't work for me at all). I was given a local anaesthetic first and didn't feel any pain. I was quite set against an epi at first but it was wonderful for me. I then had a top up in theatre and a spinal tap as I was a close call for a CX - all were fine.

Best of luck peanuts and fish and to anyone else in labour - will be thinking of you.

Oeisha · 17/01/2012 07:23

For those sectioning, I was told that if needed and if last minute I'd have a spinal, not an epidural...if it's any help...as it's more effective at pain relief. If you're worried about pain, it might be worth checking which one they'll administer. Might also explain why people say they were in different positions, as I know one is delivered much higher into the spine than the other. A spinal I think, works quicker...hense why it's often more readily used in EMCSs, but will numb you up proper...where as with an epi there's a chance of being a bit more mobile I think.

salad exciting stuff! FX it turns into something more.

fish Enjoy what you can of your last day of freedom.

Well, I woke up with mild-moderate period pains (sort of up to my lower waist) and a squirmy baby. It's def. a ramp up from the pains I was having before, and these are sort of rhythmical, but not too exciting. Have taken some paracetamol have a HWB attached to my back, and am nomming back some cereal. Will go back to bed post-cereal methinks.

Trying not to get DH too excited as I'm 100% sure this will be nothing. Would be interesting though...this is zombie apocalypse day...

FrillyMilly · 17/01/2012 08:50

I had an epidural during labour but I would be nervous about having one not in labour. As far as I know a spinal block and epidural are administered in the same way but in slightly different places. A spinal takes effect quicker though. I had my epi put in sat up on the bed leaning over the table. Possibly it's the preference of the doctor? I can't remember feeling anything except a scratch for the local injection but I was concentrating so hard on not moving during a contraction!!

ghosteditor · 17/01/2012 09:07

I am not very knowledgable about epidurals but am taking notes, thanks ladies! Great to hear from you moobee.

Let's see if I can remember everything I wanted to say:

oeisha Grin at apocalypse-zombie-day - it's also Baby Average day for me and I'd love a combination of the two! Grin

salad now that all sounded exciting, how did you get on? Hope it went into reveal cx. I've had runs of regular BHs down to 6 min frequency (so 4.5 or 5 min gaps) which sadly weren't the real thing, but really hope yours were!

Big hugs and good luck to ladies with inductions/electives today - you'll have babies soon!

Finally, I'm cheerier because I had a show this morning - here's hoping it's the start of things (I know not necessarily but still...) as still having BHs which are increasing in intensity very very gradually.

ParsleyLion1 · 17/01/2012 09:09

Morning ladies Smile

Still here. Nothing happening yet but they won't properly examine my cervix until 1pm. I had some contractions last night but they went away again. Personally reckon they were constipation though. Blush

fishandlilacs · 17/01/2012 09:13

Morning,

salad hope those pains start good and proper and you get your spontaneous birth you wanted.

oiesha how overdue are you now poppet? I didn't know it was zombie apocolyspe day DH would love that. Did you ever buy a copy of his book? It's available on paperback now.

addicted not long to go now, looks like we wont meet in hospital afterall now. Sorry about sleep issues with dd and the tears-I feel much better today after getting it all out yesterday.

peanuts My epidural for dd was done sitting up on the edge of the bed. i too had forgotten they give a local, so thank you for reminding me.

Hips are a bit better today for yesterdays rest. DH is coming home at 1 to take me to hopsital to have my last minute bloods done, then do a few last minute jobs, eg changing the bed in the spare room. His folks arrive at about 4pm. Lots of rest, food and drink for me today.

have a good day ladies-if i dont get to post tonight i'll see you on the otherside xxx

Fryn · 17/01/2012 10:19

Hi everyone,

apologies for prolonged radio silence - but with all these contractions and births I'm pretty sure I'll be the last one on here at this rate!

Just heard from red and she had her little boy this morning (well, I think it was this morning or last night - my phone tells me when I received the text rather than when it was sent!) Anyway, congratulations red! I'll let you fill in the details.

Well, I'm on day 2 of mat leave, and have finally actually packed my hospital bag, although I'm waiting to hear from the homebirth team in the next couple of days to see if I can have G2 at home. I'll believe it when I see it, to be honest, but it's not the end of the world if I have to go in.

No signs here - I just wish I knew it would be a carbon copy of DD's birth, then I'd know how much time I have and what to expect! I'm now fretting that DD's was so easy as I'd been having acupuncture, which I haven't been able to afford this time. Anyway, it'll be sometime in the next 4 weeks and may or may not be easy (bangs head on table).

ghost yay for your show! Hope things get moving now.

oeisha any action for you? If you can bear it, might be worth going for a walk to see if you can push things along. Or just walk up and down the stairs a bit!

oh parsley damn these bowels! hope it kicks off soon.

salad any news??

peanuts 6am seems a bit mean! Hoping that means you're straight in and done before lunch! Good luck to you and fish!

And lots of luck to everyone else - there's no way I can remember the past 7 pages I've just read.

saladcreamwitheverything · 17/01/2012 10:22

Well was contracting every 8 minutes or so until about 5.30am, then they went off a bit in frequency and intensity so I got about 1 hours sleep until one woke me up about 7.30!

Hospital rung and said they are rushed off their feet so induction postponed 3 hours, my friends c-section has been put off for a few hours as well!

However we just took my rabbit to vets and had three strong contractions in the space of ten minutes whilst in the waiting room, thought my waters were gonna go and they'd be delivering the baby in there like James Herriott with the arm-length glove! Shock

Back home now, and they are coming about every 5 minutes or so, may have to go in hospital before 3 and hijack some buggers bed. So hopefully not too long now!!

I'm not posh enough to have a iPhone or 3G iPad so this may be my last post before I go in.....so will update when I'm on the other side!!

Good luck to everyone having babies this week! Smile

ghosteditor · 17/01/2012 10:35

ooh salad that sounds like things are definitely moving in the right direction! Are you consistently having contractions faster than 5 mins apart? Get thee to delivery!!! In any case good luck and keep us up to date?

red congratulations on your little boy! Thanks

fryn great to hear from you and congratulations on your maternity leave - bet you can't wait! Hope you don't have to endure as much of it as I have had - I've been running out of things to do, and now have no washing in the house, the cleanest windows, sorted drawers, all new bedlinen, vacuumed floors, have walked for miles, vacuumed the car?

fish, glad that your hip pain is easing off, hopefully you'll be feeling much better very soon.

parsley, fx for that 1pm examination.

and in other good news, cakes and her ds are both being discharged and are heading home after almost a week in hospital! sending Brew and Biscuit their way (the edible kind)

Am hoping the show was the start of things and have had some HBs but they're varying between 7-12 mins apart, with mild cramping. I think I should go out to keep myself occupied, but everyone is at work today. DH even has to take the car for some work for its MOT - something to do with the suspension so it has to go up and have all the wheels off etc. He'll be 20 miles away while that happens and the idea makes me quite nervous!

ghosteditor · 17/01/2012 11:09

ok, right now, am having HBs at 6 min frequency and each lasting about a minute (so 5 min gaps). Cramps, but the HBs themselves aren't painful, just uncomfortable. I've had this before during the last couple of weeks of HBs, but not in the day time.

DH is keen to go get the car sorted etc but I'm quietly panicking about him being 20 miles away with a wait to get the car back. What do I do? Ask him to wait for an hour or so to see if they continue at pace, or increase? Or assume that since I can converse and sit through them that they're just HBs and nothing to worry about? I don't want to be a drama queen about it; I just don't know what's best...

Fryn · 17/01/2012 11:29

Well, with DD1 I could talk through my contractions up until my water's broke, at which point I was already 10cm and had her 40 mins later! My contractions simply weren't that painful - I went into hospital when they were every 2-3 mins (but they were still a bit erratic) at which point I felt like I needed to poo (tmi, sorry!) but that was the only real sign it was the real thing. Even the MW said she thought she'd send me home when she first saw me! (you can see why I'd like a carbon copy for this one!)

I'd probably ask DH to wait for an hour or so - maybe go for a short walk and see if they keep coming at you.

Ooo - good luck! Hope it's the real thing!

Karmanna · 17/01/2012 11:42

Morning!

Good luck to all with ELCS, inductions, and those labouring today - a lot of action on this thread today!!

I'm now 2 days overdue and not much to report despite DTD, hot curries and clary sage baths! I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll probably still be here next week. Have a sweep next Tuesday and if nothing happens, I will be booked for induction that same week.

After this Thursday, everyone left on the thread will have Aquarius babies rather than Capricorn ones!

ghosteditor · 17/01/2012 11:42

Hey Fryn, I keep hearing stories like that (and indeed I can see why you'd love a repeat!) which is obviously what I'd love to imagine for myself, but I think I have to assume I'll have a more typical (and uncomfortable!) birth, otherwise I'll drive myself nuts with all these BHs. I'm going to send him on his way (now he's faffing about with a coffee and a new CD Angry when I want him to get going and get back!) and if they stay like this but get more frequent I can probably drive the other car to fetch him.

Bet it's another false alarm....

FrillyMilly · 17/01/2012 12:06

Ghost I had contractions with DD for 12 hours and could talk through them. Went to hospital expecting to be sent home. Midwife examined me and I was 6 cm then waters went and I needed pain relief!!

ghosteditor · 17/01/2012 12:18

Thanks Frilly - how long did you wait before going in - when they were less than 5 mins apart? Maybe there's hope after all, I just don't know!!!

It doesn't help that the baby is now so giant that my bump feels solid most of the time anyway Wink.
