Hawthers from one totally inexperienced bf er..I blame just about everything on a growth spurt Grin it calms me even if DS has had far more growth spurts than are strictly normal. Hmm

Northern whoop whoop! Am in awe of your solo trip...I shall follow suit...errr next week...or maybe the week after Hmm SIL who has 2 DS's finds it weird that the crying embarrasses me so I'm hoping it passes...it's bonkers but I suppose since I find the sound so painful to hear I assume everyone else does?

AnAirOfHope · 12/01/2012 16:40

Hi i had 2 hours sleep, spech therapist came at 9am to assess Air - yay.
Air showered, dressed and hope bathed and DH. Washing up done, clothes done x 3 loads. Clearners coming tomoro. Children alot better today.

With bf anything goes just follow what your baby wants. It couuld be growth spurt, making up for lost time when ill, so trying to catch up on his weight again or just before he wants to suck and so comfort from mum. I think of it like this - the more time they spend feeding the more milk i make and the bigger baby will grow - its when they dopnt feed you should worry.

Hope has settled into being awake at night and sleeping in the day again after being ill. Its going to be really hard next week when DH goes back to work so i'm planing on easy things to keep Air entertained and afternoon's with his GP's so i can catch up on some sleep if Hope lets me!

Bee have you posted the stats on the first timers and the second+ threads as some people post there and not here. It might help to tell them about the new thread in postnat' and ask them to update stats?

If anyone is ever thinking of having their house extended or renovated in anyway can I suggest you don't do it when you have a newborn and a toddler! Been a bit of a nightmare week of plasterdust, brick dust and general kitchen chaos, combined with an unsettled freya and a knackered me. Last thing I feel like doing in an evening is trying to clean up some of the mess, inbetween feeding freya, bedtime for ds etc etc. We bought this house over a year ago now and we still have lots to do - frequently wishing we had bought a newbuld with nothing to do, but know it will be good in the end.

Freya is still having loads of tummy troubles which means she does not sleep well (either day or evening) and I think feeding is the only thing that settles her. Any tips anyone? trying infacol and massage. also had success with the dummy for the first time which has helped her stay sleep and last 3 hours without a feed ( a miracle for us)

mmm I have had that a few times in my right breast and wondered about thrush - no other signs though, although I did wonder if freya had a whitish tinge to her tongue, which might be a sign I think. Is thrush a problem is feeding ok, not too painful etc - anyone know?

Mmmmcheese · 12/01/2012 16:50

Thanks Bee, if it is thrush what should I do? Do I need to go to GP or can I just take an oral pill for thrush?

NorthernChinchilla · 12/01/2012 17:14

Cheers HLCC- it was just round the corner but it feels like an achievement! Am rather fearful of when we 'properly' go out, buggy, change bag and all, and think first time will be for six week check up.

For me, the fears are three-fold: I hate hearing LO cry; I don't want to irritate others; and I don't want others to think I'm an incompetent mother Blush. Also at the moment he's either asleep- and seeing as he does 9-10 hours overnight in blocks of three, he doesn't do much in the day- or feeding (or crying to be fed) so there doesn't seem much opportunity to actually get anywhere- exacerbated by the fact that as I don't drive we'll be 'in public' for the entire journey as well as when we land.

But we shall both overcome!

msbuggywinkle · 12/01/2012 17:28

Back and all exhausted!

mmm could be thrush...often described as a 'gripping' pain and usually (but not always!) accompanied by white patches on your nipples and baby's mouth. If you suspect it is, GP visit and make sure you get treatment for both of you or you will get re-infected!

HLC yay! Glad it has gone. I was like that with DD1, I find banishing clocks from the rooms I spend most time in helps!

hawthers yes, it can be normal, possibly a growth spurt! As long as he is producing wet and dirty nappies, alert when awake and you can see him latched well and swallowing it is fine (however inconvenient!).

northern brood! Grin I like it! would have a dozen if we could afford it slings really are fab! I don't know how I would manage without mine!

Ok...come solve a problem for me. So, I prioritise Home ed and general kid stuff (housework done at weekends apart from the basics!) so by tea time I am bloody exhausted. I'm managing to feed the DDs well, but DP doesn't get home til 7pm and is a dreadful cook. How do I manage to get us off eating crap!?

hawthers · 12/01/2012 18:34

Thanks air and msb and hlcc. Think I just need to have faith and get through to the next weigh in on Monday. V v difficult with the history of ds1 to be chilled out about feeding and weight gain. Right deep breaths and big girl pants on.

AnAirOfHope · 12/01/2012 18:57

Hi

Hawthers - you are doing great. This time will be diffrent. You can feed your son. Have faith in your boby's ability to give your son what he needs. I think of it like my boby grow and carried my son for 9 months so my body can carry on provdeing what he needs now he is here Grin. I had a bad time at the start with feeding Air. We did the breast, expressed breast milk, ff and then i would express again and repect on a three hour schedule to start then i just bf and hoped he would demand enough to build up my supply in a few days (i do not recommend this with out mw or lll supporting you everyday) but it worked - i did nothing for 3 days except feed him. Then he was at the 50th centile and at 4 months - when we started going out - he droped to 2nd centiile and i very nearly give up but then i meet a bf consultant that go thru to me and he went back up to the 75th in 4 months. I also hated feeding in public so i found out all the private feeding rooms before i went anywhere and then at 6 months when he started solids it got a lot easier. I have learned from my mistakes and now feel more confident about feeding Hope but i'm still going to get her weight every week!

MsB - put DH food in the oven on a low heat until he gets home (this is what my mum does for my dad!) make something that can be reheated Grin (stew and cottage pie)

Mmmmcheese · 12/01/2012 19:05

Msb do you have a slow cooker? You can chuck stuff in in the morning or lunchtime and will be cooked by dinner. On mine you can also keep it warm for hours. Also means is cheap and healthy. I do huge portions and freeze or reheat for another day. You can always chop stuff up the previous evening when DP is around to help.

AnAirOfHope · 12/01/2012 19:29

*2nd centile = 25th centile

Oi - regarding the photo book. Would it be better if you changed the password on snapfish then private message everyone on this thread the new password to create the book? That way we can keep our info private and as it is a public foreum it will stop other people from seeing our photo's too. I would be intrested in doing a photo book of all the other thread babies and we are thinking of opening our own account so that we can get books of both Air and Hope.

We had a computer virus last year and to get it fixed we give it to a friend who works for an IT shop but he reset the computer and we lost all of Air's baby photo's for the past two years Sad

Today we found a memory card with his first photo on and his first seaside trip and his Christening on so i'm mega happy. We have lost all the photos from when he was one - his frist birthday till his second birthday but at least we have some of his baby photo's - so tip always back up your computer and your photo's.

kri5tycringle · 12/01/2012 20:00

Hi everyone

Just realized i need to change my name!

Farrrr too many posts to go through since i have been AWOL

I hope everyone is ok??

Im now back ta daaaaa, hopefully to stay this time (if i get a spare min in the day to come on here!)

Mmmmcheese · 12/01/2012 20:12

I just got some canestan thrush cream to try on my nipples as that it what was suggested on the internet, it also said doesn't need to be washed off before feeding. But just read the leaflet and it says not to be used in the mouth or swallowed and if you do accidentally to call your GP or A and E. Any ideas what to do?

Am very annoyed as went to emergency dentist today with toothache and turns out I have an infection in partially erupted wisdom teeth so got antibiotics. Got them in Boots with the thrush cream then got home and realised I left them on the counter in Boots which is now closed so can't take them until tomorrow morning now.

Fed up as am in pain from sore nipples/breasts, tooth infection, sinusitis, chest infection and still have CS pain which had returned due to cough. :(

Sorry for depressing post.

NorthernChinchilla · 12/01/2012 21:19

Wow mmmm we could be illness buddies... Is it worth calling NHS direct to ask ref thrush and cream usage? What anti-bs did you get for the tooth?

So the issue is you and your OH are both knackered at night and the pair of you are eating badly msb? Is it grazing, or takeaways?
I'd say there's a few things you could do- slow cooker is a good idea from mmmm. Or you could accept that there's only so much one woman/family can do, and just ensure that whatever you eat, however random, you have a salad with it and fruit for dessert, which is no effort and your OH couldn't possibly foul up!
Or you could batch cook one healthy thing at the weekend- blended veg soup, quorn/meat chillie- and then that can be your meal on 2-3 nights, so it matters less if you're eating less healthily on other nights?

OK, totally random question- does anyone else's LO fart (and poo) REALLY noisily or is it just me that's spawned Beavis/Butthead Confused?

aethelfleda · 12/01/2012 21:36

northern, it's quite standard for babies to burp fart and generally erupt with extreme noise and enthusiasm. A small baby pooing can jet-propel its entire bum off the floor with the forces generated!

mmmm, go to your GP and explain you've been getting deep stabbing breast pains while/after feeding and are worried about thrush. They may offer you nystatin (which is drops for baby's mouth) but what works a little better is oral miconazole gel for both your nipples and babies mouth for a week (don't take the fluconazole capsule from the chemist while you're breastfeeding). I'll try to find you a link about best treatments for oral thrush).

Welcome back kri5ty!

oh and hawthers, I third or fourth the growth spurt theory; if the feeding continues like that for a few days then settles, you'll know that's what it was.

Swanky sushi restaurant was loooovely! dS slept under the table for most of it (and then had a sneaky feed). And snuck in a sneaky trip to M+S on the way back for an extra nursing bra (38F, oh, the glamour)

aethelfleda · 12/01/2012 21:50

Here you go mmm, link to a thrush info sheet and treatment protocol from Bristol. It says miconazole gel (Daktarin) is the first line, interestingly
It says you can as a second line take fluconazole capsules while breasfeeding as it's given in other countries, but isnt licenced in the UK for that, so a doc could prescribe but a pharmacist wouldn't sell it to you.

thrush treatment info

Mmmmcheese · 12/01/2012 22:16

Thanks so much aethel. Think I will go to GP tomorrow, had thought to wait until my 6 week check on Tues but too painful!

Antibiotics for tooth is erythromycin (which always give me the runs - another thing to add to the list!).

Also want GP to check my ears as been blowing my nose so much my ears kept popping and now I only have partial hearing in my left ear. I am seriously fed up of having so many things wrong with me at once!

Northern DD does SUCH loud farts and SO many, its truly amazing. DS hardly ever farted but then he had reflux so I think he just puked up all his wind so it never got through to the other end!

In absense of antibiotics I am treating myslef with DS's teething gel - it does help a bit!

hawthers · 12/01/2012 22:26

Thanks for all reassurance. Am tired and emotional today - think Dh has finally lost patience with me weeping everywhere. just feel like i've done a bad job all round today and cs still hurts and hops feel raw due to so much feeding. Tomorrow will be better (it has to be).

Re farts DS2's are pretty impressively loud. We were having lunch last week and DS2 farted followed by DS2 then DH let one rip as well. Got a delightful glimpse if the next 20 years of my life Grin

On a separate note anyone heard from tyel recently?

hawthers · 12/01/2012 22:31

Hops are clearly nips in hawthers land

AnAirOfHope · 12/01/2012 22:52

or Seven?

hawthers · 12/01/2012 23:31

Or lalababy

LittleMissFlustered · 13/01/2012 01:57

Have been upstairs since eight and have as yet still not had any sleep :(

aethelfleda · 13/01/2012 02:17

Hiyalmf : constant feed/poo/grizzle cycle? Or insommnia fairy again?

We're currently on boob number 5 in a burp-feed-check nappy-feed-burp-headbonk-feed type cycle, DS is I think doing his 7-10 day growth spurt thing, maybe your LO is too?

AnAirOfHope · 13/01/2012 02:46

Insommnia fairy for me and just finished feeding

Mmmmcheese · 13/01/2012 04:50

I'm on second feed of the night but had 4 and a half hrs sleep so far which is not bad for me. Hoping for another 2 tonight.

hawthers · 13/01/2012 06:12

Just finished second feed of the night. Managed 4 and a half hours of sleep in a row. The constant day feeding paying off? Hope so
