Due 2 weeks tomorrow - 23rd Jan. Must have got lost from the stats list, I shall re add myself now!

How lovely is ML? I only wish I could get the lottery win and be a stay at home mum for ever (will probably feel differently when I'm desperate for an adult conversation).

ParsleyLion1 · 08/01/2012 11:04

I don't know yet. Tomorrow is my first day. I officially finished Friday but spent the whole day yesterday finishing stuff off from about 9.30- 7pm. So am chilling today Smile

They gave me a mamas and papas voucher so I might go to the shops and spend that tomorrow. Also got a voucher for a spa treatment for xmas which I've booked for Thursday and a hair appointment before my induction date on Monday week! I've got a few nursery appts to have a look and in between I'm hoping some nesting will kick in. Now I've written it that sounds like too much to do.

kelli10 · 08/01/2012 11:12

Wow only a week to go!! Sounds a good idea to get in a bit of rest and relaxation before it's all go in your world. How lovely to have a spa treatment in the offing. I could do with a nice pedicure or something myself.

Nursery appointments? Sounds like you're already thinking about the return to work... Is it difficult to get places in good nurseries in your area? I'm hoping that the grannys will be helping me out or it wont really be worth my while to go back. It's so expensive in my area!

Good luck getting everything done. I'm sure all the really important things will be finished in no time. A bit of pressure focusses the mind (I'm hoping).

TiaDalma · 08/01/2012 11:28

wow this thread moves fast! I haven't added myself to the stats list as of yet ... not sure which one I should add to Confused, but I am due today with a boy if anyone who is a bit more clued up would like to do the honours (I am easily confused ATM, not normally this thick, honest!)

I really don't think my little womb invader is planning on making an exit any time soon. I have been ready for weeks, so am getting rather impatient to say the least!

WRT birth plans .. I want to have a water birth at hospital, but there is only one pool, so its down to lady luck as to whether I get it or not. Although my MW did say that some of the other rooms have huge, deep baths which I could use, and if the pool becomes free they would let me go in it then.

Oeisha I also have remifentanil on my birth plan. The MW who did our antenatal class told us about it, I think it sounds really good, do you know anyone that has used it? Apparently at the hospital i'm going to, you have to have a catheter if you have an epidural, so am trying to avoid if at all possible.

I did reply to a friend who asked 'if i had popped yet?' by saying that I had, I just decided not to tell her. Then I felt really bad and apologised Grin, ahh well she is a good friend and didn't take it personally. She just laughed at me for being arsey instead!

for anyone who is feeling shit :( ... may all these babys come quickly and safely!

And Thanks for any babes that have already arrived!

From what I can remember of the MW's description, remifentanil is an opioid, administered through a PCA (patient controlled anglesia) so you have a button to press when you want it. It goes through your system very quickly, about 3 mins IIRC, which is why I like the sound of it, if it doesn't agree with you for whatever reason you don't have to wait ages for it to get out of your system. Also that means that you can go on to try other types of pain relief, e.g. pethidine or an epidural if you don't like the remifentanil.
I seem to remember it doesn't cross over into the placenta like pethedine does, so it doesn't affect baby at all, although don't quote me on that, and please, someone correct me if I am wrong :). It was a while ago that the MW told us about it, and my memory isn't brilliant!

I am pretty sure it doesn't limit movement like an epidural does. You have to have an IV for the remifentanil though, and I think you have to be monitored and stuff aswell, so mobility maybe limited, although that is probably different in different hospitals. I also don't know if all hospitals offer it, I think I read somewhere that some places only offer it of you can't have an epidural for whatever reason, so maybe worth speaking to your MW about it :)

laylasmummy09 · 08/01/2012 13:37

MissRee · 08/01/2012 13:48

Ahhhh congrats to your sis Laylasmum Grin

ParsleyLion1 · 08/01/2012 13:56

Good news laylasmummy Grin congrats to your sister.

Oeisha · 08/01/2012 14:26

m2b Glad to hear everything's going well and William's doing good.

Green Congrats Thanks and welcome to Arthur Bear.

Kelli Welcome.

Re: Remifentanil: It's an opoid class drug, and like Tia says it's controlled by you, via drip. When you feel a contraction coming on you whack the button. It takes about 10-15secs for it to kick in (just in time for your contraction to peak) and it basically pain kills for the time of the contraction. It's eaily processed by the body, so only last about 3mins in the body. I think some (but much, much less) does cross the placenta, but in a much less a dose than pethidine and because it's so quickly 'used' and out of the system, you don't tend to get drowsey (thus lower APGAR score) babies. I think they prefer you to have the drip put in by an anesthatist and you can't be in the pool incase your BP increases/you vomit/feint, but protocol may vary. There's no reason why you can't be relatively mobile with it, but if like me, your BP us a concern, they may want frequent monitoring. BUT it is much preferred over pethidine as you're only getting what you 'need' and it's out of your and baby's body so quickly. Not everywhere offers it. Only Stepping Hill in my area does. So if you think it's something you might want to have as a backup it's def. worth checking with the local hospitals.
As it's an opoid, it has the usual side effects. You can feel very out of it and it can make you sick. But it's probably worth a go over an eipdural.

laylasmummy congrats on Auntiedom!

My BP, well, who knows. 2 different midwives took 8 goes to try and get it...and they're fairly sure it's 110/85, so not great but also kinda good (the 110 bit that is). So I'm still being checked Wed. Bloods all came back fine, so in all likelyhood it's NOT PE. Just have to watch my BP during birth (which feels like a very long way away). They seemed to think it was me and "low blood pressure" rather than the equipment...which seems odd, as that really isn't low...not for me anyway (usually something like 90/60 pre-pg). No other MW has had an issue taking it...

Anyway, I'm off to install the lamp that B&Q have finally got in stock in the nursery. Someone finally decided to go and get one from a different store, as they seemed incapable of zeroing out their stock, and thus the system thinking they had plenty in...bless. When the left a message the guy added "oh and if you could make sure you bring the paperwork with you, as if you don't we might frisk you on the way out"... Hmm Shock. Very personal service from B&Q.

Karmanna · 08/01/2012 14:38

Green, congratulations on baby Arthur!!

Parsley and Kelli, happy Maternity Leave!! I was really bored the first week but I'm really getting into the swing of this not-working business now! :)

All my "symptoms" from the other day seem to have disappeared again so back to waiting! Argh! MW app tomorrow - would you recommend opting for a sweep if she offers me one? Do they actually work?

Hope you're all having a good Sunday! xx

MissRee · 08/01/2012 15:18

Karmanna I had a sweep on Thursday and am still waiting... I did have some contractions early hours of Friday morning and have now had a show do maybe not totally useless?

Was also good for getting an idea of how "ready" my body is as MW said I'm 1cm dilated and cervix down to 1 cm in length.

tigana · 08/01/2012 15:51

In an update to my post last night re wriggly baby stabby pains - nil, zip, zilch, nada. I'm going with positive thinking, baby is getting into a good position.

Congratulations green!

Karmanna · 08/01/2012 16:07

Thanks MissRee - I think I'll probably go for it if they do offer me one, I'd just like to avoid an induction if I can help it! But she may not offer me one as it's only my 39w app, although at my last app head was fully engaged according to GP so think he's ready to come out... Will have to wait and see...

abeautifulbutterfly · 08/01/2012 16:20

Hi all! Huge congrats to nanny, green, m2b (scary, very scary, but sounds like you're doing really well!).
To anybody having babies today - good luck and I guarantee you'll have wonderful children - today is my DDDH's birthday and he is a wonderful, gentle, kind, conscientious man so it's obv a good day to be born Grin. The girls and I bought him a sushi making set and we have spent the day having fun making sushi Smile.
No progress here, which is good, given the state of my hospital's mat unit. Want to go another 10 days at least. Only things are getting a bit uncomfy in the evenings, lots of twinges down low, but no contractions, no more HBs than usual.

Take care girls and look after yourselves.

Fryn · 08/01/2012 17:43

Hi everyone,

it seems strangely quiet on here today - hopefully a few of you are in labour (of the ones who want to be, that is!)

ghost - oh poor you. As you say, it's the embarrassment rather than the pain from the fall that's worse! Although, having said that, my knee still isn't healing, so I'm hoping baby holds off until I can kneel. Hope your wrist's ok.

laylasmummy congrats to your sister, and respect for the natural birth! That seems to be a rare thing for twins these days.

butterfly I really hope baby stays put until your mat unit's sorted. I don't suppose you'll care who you're grunting in front of ultimately, but it would be nice to do it minus the builders.

Hope everyone else is ok!

DH has been in a pathetic teenage strop all day - I think I'm going to go and try to outstrop him now. He probably hasn't realised the full extend of my raging hormones, and I intend to throw the full lot at him. Ha! (irrational pregnant lady?? perish the thought...)

ghosteditor · 08/01/2012 18:09

Fryn, I find I have no patience if DH has a grump on; my pg-lady-wrath knows no bounds! I reckon you show him your ire Grin. Hope your knee recovers quickly - is it the skin that's the problem or the joint? I'm used to having horrid knees from hockey but like you say, I wouldn't want to try to kneel on them for birth!

DH has been a real sweetie today - we've been to John Lewis for new sheets and towels and pillows as they've been on the list for ages and we probably won 't think about them again for months. Sooooo happy with my new memory foam pillow Smile. And he's helped me sort out the linen cupboard etc without any complaints!

I'm finding it increasingly hard to get around these days and have a big feeling of pressure between my legs - hopefully all the walking (and falling!) means bubs is fully engaged...

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 08/01/2012 18:43

Ghost - I say we should blame some snotty server at the Costa who probably handled the mugs w/o washing their hands properly or something. I have been so careful about washing and anti-bacterialing my hands for exactly this reason, I really didn;t want to face labour with an illness. I am starting to go a little OCD now... I caught myself wiping down the steering wheel with a disinfectant wipe t'other day Blush

I had a lovely slob out day with my sis watching musicals (her choice - I couldn;t believe it!) and commiserating with each other about the parents being difficult! T'was really nice. Dh actually went flying, so he's done all his checks and things for the next quarter which will see him through to after paternity leave is over, which means I should get a really cheerful, happy DH home and if I don't he will be severely told off. Then I'll probably cry.

Is anyone else freaking people out by calling them? Especially men or people you don;t often call? I rang my parents' house in tears t'other day because my new 'pregnancy' boots (the only things I can get on my feet currently) had ripped and when my dad answered and said my mum was out I told him I'd call her mobile and hung up on him. It was only when I was talking to my mum that I realised how it must have come across and asked her to call him and let him know I wasn;t in la bour - apparently he was full on panicking! lol

Just settling in for a nice cheesy Dancing on Ice session whilst continuing to bounce on my exercise ball. I will test DH's gratitude by not changing channels when he gets back!

shonnomanom · 08/01/2012 18:56

Hi ladies,

Congrats on the twins arrival laylasmymmy.
We were just visiting my sister and her newborn twins at the hospital today. They were hoping to get home today but baby Olivia has lost too much weight since birth so has been put on a strict feeding schedule to help her bulk up.

Dp is starting to get frustrated with everyone asking if the baby is here yet. dd is back to nursery tommorrow do I bet there will loads of comments about the baby not being here yet.

How stupid a comment is it when someone standing right in front of you says 'oh so youv not had the baby yet?'

fishandlilacs · 08/01/2012 19:09

hiya all,

a very warm welcome to you Tia and kelli if you want to join the facebook page pls pm me and i'll try to get it sorted.

butterfly that sushi day sounds really lovely-quite romantic :)

ghost sorry the knees are still poorly.

oiesha that drug sounds really interesting-I don't think it's on offer here in woo otherwise i would have probably opted for that.

I need to write a birth plan, although last time it never even made it to delivery suite with me-the envelope it was in was lost along the way. I dont really give a stuff as long as I get skin to skin straight away and they wait for the cord to stop pulsing.

I have been to cribbs causeway with my mum , dd and dh today, we had a little mooch round asda then came home-that was it. I had to buy dd some new clothes because she has shot up over xmas. I can barely bloody move now. My back is utterly killing me. But it was a nice day out and it made mum very happy too, she spends a lot of time on her own because dad works long hours and what with her growing anxiety over my sister's overdueness it was a good day.

I'm going to collapse into a aching heap and ry and stay awake for sherlock.

fishandlilacs · 08/01/2012 19:10

oooh forgot to say congrats to your sister auntie laylasmummy

ghosteditor · 08/01/2012 19:14

Cakes let's blame irrationally blame the Mothercare staff instead - remember how sweet the Costa server was in bringing over the tray because we were both worried we'd drop it with our spasmy pg hands? My folks haven't been to visit since Nov because they've both been so ill with cold/chest infection but I'm happy for them to stay away until fully recovered! As I have asthma, I really struggle with colds as they go straight to my chest. How's your throat now? I feel loads better, yey!

Having some very strange sensations, like ppm is squirming in my cervix (never thought I'd admit this Grin) - oeisha I think you've mentioned this a few times? Odd, isn't it?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 08/01/2012 19:38

Yep, I'm getting low down stabby pains like fists in my cervix. Very uncomfortable! Throat is still a bit sore, but the cold sore is causing me the most grief :( Hate the damn things.

I can't peel the cat off me atm, well, he switched to my sister when she was here, but has come back to me now. Clingy cat!
