OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
blonderthanred · 20/08/2012 11:27

Just had an appointment with the consultant and got my GTT results back. Unfortunately I am just over the threshold so officially diagnosed with GD. Have to go back in an hour for diabetes clinic which will probably take a few hrs.

Feel like a bit of a failure, it had all been going so well and I thought I was eating quite healthily but I guess not enough.

Asked (jokingly) if I could have a slice of cake at my 10th wedding anniversary party on Sunday but he said (not jokingly) nope.

cakeandcava · 20/08/2012 14:13

Ah, blonde that sucks, I'm sorry. If you're just over the limit though, it probably means you should be able to control it relatively well? I think it is only seriously out-of-control GD that is potentially an issue?

I haven't heard back from the clinic since I had my bloods taken three weeks ago, so I'm assuming there was no glucose in the blood and the wee sample was just a case of slightly knackered kidneys -still trying to eat healthily though. The bbcgoodfood website has some decent low-GI recipes. Might even be one for cake there...

Northey · 20/08/2012 15:07

Oh crap, blondie. I bet you were really taken aback by that non-joky "nope."

How did diabetes clinic go?

LauraPalmer · 20/08/2012 17:13

Sorry to hear about the GD diagnosis Blondie - I still think you should have a small slice of anniversary cake. Certainly 10 years is sugar-spiking worthy!

We've jus returned from our 16 wk scan (@15+2) and got to hear little Grublet's lovely heartbeat. Even recorded it on my phone to analyse the sound and try to determine the gender.

LauraPalmer · 20/08/2012 17:13

*just

blonderthanred · 20/08/2012 18:49

Thanks so much all, feel a bit wiped out after a day out at the 'orspital but fairly pragmatic.

The diabetes clinic was epically long - two women had translators and one had a very noisy child (possibly ADHD so tried not to be irritated), so it was hard to keep concentration. I'm now the proud owner of a pin-pricker and I have to test my blood sugar 4x a day until the birth. She gave lots of dietary advice and said if we managed it well by diet then we should have a normal pg and birth, just a few extra scans/checks before and after. I have to go back on Thurs with food diary and pinprick results to see how I'm doing.

Northey it was a bit of a shock but the midwife was v practical and realistic about it all so I do feel calmer now. I know I'm still v lucky. Hope you're getting through.

LP that is terrific about your 16 wk appt and the lovely heartbeat. You must be delighted (and possibly a bit overwhelmed if you're like me).

Faithy I am very pleased to see you make an appearance on here!

broccoliandwater definitely no cake and cava for me...

cakeandcava · 20/08/2012 20:10

I think the threshold for diagnosing GD is very low -it's great that your midwife thinks you can manage it with diet (not so great regarding the cake though, but hey...). It probably does have to be very bad before actual complications regarding pg and birth come up.

Great to hear about Grublet's heartbeat -so is it chugging train or galloping horses? Wink

Also, am I right in thinking there should be some newbies with piss-sticks fresh in hand in here now...?

HaveALittleFaith · 20/08/2012 21:18
LauraPalmer · 20/08/2012 22:58

So it's trains versus horses? For some reason I thought it was politically incorrect trains for boys and washing machines for girls.

I sent the sound bite to my mum and she thinks it sounds like a train inside a washing machine Grin

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 06:33

Do you have a guy feeling lors?

Only remaining tests are ICs so I have waited a couple of days before retesting and managed not to pee all night. Pleased to say it says yes and is definitely darker than previous. Good good. Still diffed.

blonder please, please don't blame yourself! There's numerous reasons GD can develop. I agree with the above - great news it xanbe managed with diet. It's about being careful but allowing yourself the odd treat.

LauraPalmer · 21/08/2012 07:44

Well, I just bothered to read my Mat. notes from the appointment yesterday and apparently the heartbeat is 150 per minute. Anyone know what that means re. mystical voodoo gender guessing?

Glad you've had a good intro to handling the GD Blondebits. It actually sounds fairly straightforward and I hope it's not adding any extra stress. My grandfather was diabetic and my mum used to bake this amazing no-sugar American apple pie - I would kill a piece or three right now for brekkie! I'll ask if she can dig out the recipe and will send you a copy.

Glad the sticks are still working Faife Wink (when I ran out of ICs, I switched to IC opks and I peed on one just last week!)

LauraPalmer · 21/08/2012 08:06

ps. We bought a Moses basket and stand yesterday [shocked]

cakeandcava · 21/08/2012 09:27
blonderthanred · 21/08/2012 10:36

Hurray for Moses basket. My friend is giving me hers although I think it's advised to get new bedding. Once the anniversary party is done we can start getting baby stuff ready. Eek.

Thanks for the encouraging words, my DBro made me porridge for breakfast so I am off to a good start.

I heard the same about heartrate, ours was bang in the middle. It actually sounded like a rave in there, TBI and I were giggling afterwards about it sounding like some 90s techno clubs in Leeds we used to frequent. No idea about horses/washing machines though. Fun to try and guess from all the theories, have you looked at nubs and skulls?

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 11:27

Ooh cakey! Blush Did you pop into the BESH thread a while back to say you were after winning a baybee but didn't linger? When will you be laying?

I am utterly exhausted. I've never known anything like it. If it wasn't for the sore boobs and positive pee sticks I'd think I had a virus. Ginger cookies are helping with the puniness but I think I will have to give up tea because I keep up chucking/nearly up chucking after I drink it. Not that I'm complaining. I am vairy happy :) the extremes reassures me of diffedness.

Good start blonder! I have porridge most days (albeit gluten free).

My Dsis has a Moses basket - and no imminent DC2 plans - so I think we will ask to borrow it. We have a cot that MSB had as a child which needs stripping Wink and painting for when baybee is a bit bigger. I refuse to rush out and get anything yet of course.

cakeandcava · 21/08/2012 11:57

I did poke my head into the BESHes a few weeks back yes, when the oldies were coming out of the woodwork. Currently 31 weeks, will be laying sometime late October if everything goes according to plan.

The tiredness was the first thing to hit me too -and then the nausea. It is reassuring, isn't it :) Luckily it went away around week 13-14, at that stage I had had enough reassurance...

Still haven't really bought anything (except a pram that I've ordered and is apparently going to take weeks to arrive) -I suppose I need to get on with that at some point soon?

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 17:40

Was it you that thought about rejoining the BESH but decided against it? We, perhaps it is time to go shopping cakey! Before you struggle to waddle to the shops! We've had random conversations about names God help me, he wants to name it after one of the Man U squad. Please let it be a girl! and nappies. He wasn't that bothered about washable nappies til he googled how much they could save! Wink

Yes after a few days of nausea I can imagine the reassurance won't be needed after week 13! I felt a bit out of sorts around 7dpo, quite forgetful. At 11dpo i was shattered. By 12dpo I had a ridiculously heightened sense of smell. The deep clean team came in at work, the smell of the chemicals made me sick! That's what prompted me to test.

LauraPalmer · 21/08/2012 17:44

A heightened sense of smell is what prompted me to to a test, too - I was hit on the tube with a lethal combo of nail polish and prawn crisps. Gag.

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 17:50

Why does everything smell so smelly?!

LauraPalmer · 21/08/2012 17:55

I'm not sure, but I absolutely cannot stand being around smokers and their stinky cigarette smoke. I moved locations 3 times in the park today to get away from smokers. Angry

LauraPalmer · 21/08/2012 17:55

Cue music for crazy pregnant laydee behaviour!

HaveALittleFaith · 21/08/2012 18:36

Oh even the smell of cigarettes on people's clothing makes me Envy Perfume, chemicals, grass. Everything just smells Not necessarily bad, just so strong!

lovesLemonDrizzleCake · 23/08/2012 09:15
cakeandcava · 23/08/2012 09:23

I haven't had the smell thing -thankfully, as it sounds grim. I can't stand bad smells.

How is the no-cake life going blondie? Once I was told to become more aware of sugar-eating, I did realise the frequency with which I buy muffins/shortcakes etc. for lunchtime treats Blush Have got better now though!

People have started getting up for me on the bus! It's lovely, but also kind of awkward. I get on at a stop where there are never free seats left in the morning rush -it's interesting noticing what kind of people get up against those who studiously try to ignore me. I'd never ask for a seat, but it is nice to be offered...

cakeandcava · 23/08/2012 09:24

ooh, x-post with Lemon!

Congrats! How are you feeling?
