I'm afraid it's a bit of a myth about larger ladies not feeling movement - it's just another stick to beat us with I'm afraid.

I felt my first at 17+5 and my second at 12 and that was with an anterior placenta!

How can it possibly/logically (!) be that you cannot feel an internal movement? That's like saying "because you're fat you can't feel that you need a bowel movement". Absolute poppycock. If on the other hand they meant to say "a third party might not feel the movement when they rest a hand on you externally" there might be some truth in that. But otherwise? Bollocks.

FYI You're "allowed" soft-boiled eggs and shellfish. The rest is up to your own discretion - unless you know for a fact you live in an era of high-risk food contamination and your mil is a skank who buys her food from lay-by's.

OP posts:
cakeandcava · 24/07/2012 14:10

Hi Alps and congrats on your second baybee!
I'm very Blush for perpetuating myth - it was something I read on Babycentre when I was reading about movements myself a few weeks back. It does make sense what you're saying.

I say eat the eggs and enjoy the parma ham :)

LauraPalmer · 24/07/2012 15:31

Grin at MIL possibly being a skank instead of the terribly posh reality

I ate the eggs, the ham and the shellfish. And had wine with every evening meal. I'm not being overly-precious, but I did forgo the Brie stupid me.

LauraPalmer · 24/07/2012 15:32

The ham and melon was AMAZING!

blonderthanred · 24/07/2012 16:47

We're not allowed melon?

Mind you, I don't like melon. Or cheese. I've had the odd poached egg though. Mmm.

Dor I'm sure you'll be fine camping, er... Maybe take a nice mattress? I am feeling fine in general but v v achey at night (as I may have whinged about already). And some joyous carpal tunnel stuff, no feeling in my hands in the morning.

I thought the movement thing related to being able to feel it on the outside, internally it shouldn't make a difference but everyone's experience will vary. I'm sure the scan will reassure you.

LauraPalmer · 24/07/2012 16:55

The melon is fine...it's just in conjunction with the Parma ham that it's a bit of a no-no. But I tell you it was well worth it - the dish also included mascarpone and basil...absolutely yum!

I should think camping will be fine, Dor (if you bring your DG!) But you may want to invest in one of those she-pee gadgets!

blonderthanred · 24/07/2012 22:52

Yes, many times have I longed for a she-wee in the last few months or a chamber pot.

Dor it could be that you have an anterior placenta and that's why you're not feeling much yet. Several of the November thread people have reported this. Anyway they will tell you at the 20 week scan.

When are you thinking of telling the in-laws, LP? Do they know about your hiatus with TOM? (if that's not too personal)

LauraPalmer · 25/07/2012 08:34

Why why WHY have I gone and looked at the antenatal tests and choices threads???? Now I'm extra nervous about our scan tomorrow.

Re. telling parents - provided that everything goes well tomorrow morning I'll probably Skype my mom the same day to break the news. Then my sister. They're the only family members who know about the MCs (and actually my sister doesn't even know about the 2nd one). Next on the 'tell list' will be my dad --who has a big mouth and will promptly spread the news far and wide for us which is why he'll be the last in my immediate family to be told!

As for TOM's parents - they don't know the details of our time-out (and have no idea about the MCs) but they do know that there was some sort of hiccup which meant that TOM had some time on his own for heavy thinking. They detest TOMs exW are 100% in favour of our relationship. In fact, TOMs very posh, very religious mum believes that I was sent to TOM and TinyTOM by God. Hmm

We'll tell them the news in person at a family gathering in a few weeks (when I'll be about 14wks). On our way to the gathering we'll have a train ride during which we'll tell TinyTOM, so he'll know ahead of the ILs.

For now, though, I just want some good news for tomorrow.

Question - when did your bellies start to tighten? I'm not overweight but I definitely had a jiggley potbelly to begin with. I'm panicking a little that I don't feel any hardness/enlarged uterus. The possibility of MMC is haunting me.

Please slap me with a wet haddock remind me that we've got good odds after seeing a healthy 9wk scan...

FriendofDorothy · 25/07/2012 08:47

I don't think I started noticing any hardness until about 13-14 weeks at least, maybe even later. I have a fat gut anyway which seemed to cover it all up.

I am sure you will be fine tomorrow. :)

cakeandcava · 25/07/2012 09:40

I certainly didn't notice any hardness until after the 12-week scan. I wouldn't worry about that. I'm also normal weight, but my belly has always been my achilles heel -a biit flabby and prone to pot-ness when eating too much. I have no stomach muscle to speak of... Interestingly, I've carried quite low this whole pregnancy so far -the baby never did that 'move up' that they speak of. According to midwife this is related to muscles in your abdomen and has feck all to do with gender of baby

blonderthanred · 25/07/2012 12:05

Laura the odds are most definitely in your favour, my doc was very certain about this when I had my 8wk. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow of course. Dor when is your scan?

Tight belly... hmm bit of an alien concept to me... Tbh the only place I felt tightness for ages was the upper bit of my tummy where all the organs fat had got pushed up. Middle bit is catching up but lower belly is still soft when I stand.

At least it's starting to look more like a bump than two big rolls of fat... I always got very grumpy when pg women complained of looking fat but I have to admit I did feel even more self-conscious than usual.

Have just bought some maternity bits from New Look online, hope they arrive by the weekend.

FriendofDorothy · 25/07/2012 13:26

My scan is next Wednesday, almost exactly a week to go!

LauraPalmer · 25/07/2012 16:33

Thanks for slapping me with a fresh fish your support. Luckily I've been so ridiculously busy today that I haven't had any time to worry about it!

Only a week Dor...shall we begin placing bets on the sex? Do you have any updiffed inklings?

FriendofDorothy · 25/07/2012 21:36

My sister and a few other people seem to think I am having a boy. I have absolutely no idea although I hope it is a girl.

cakeandcava · 26/07/2012 09:45

Whichever it is Dor, I pretty much guarantee that once you get your head around it, you'll think it couldn't have been any other way and that it's obviously the best possible thing ever. The human mind is nice that way.

Laura lots of good luck for your scan today!! Fingers crossed that everything is just fine. It's exciting to see how much the jellybean has grown since last time :)

LauraPalmer · 26/07/2012 11:25

Great scan today - everything looks good and I'm measuring 11+5, which is spot on for our sechs/ov dates. It felt amazing to have finally graduated from the EPU ward, especially since it represents such sad memories for us - very good to be scanned on the antenatal ward with all the other proper differs!

Little Grublet is a lazy thing though and was refusing to uncurl for the longest time - I kept having to cough and wiggle around to help movement and stretching. (9.30 was apparently too early for waking up, so obviously Grublet takes after TOM.) Grin

Now I have an appointment with my GP then I'm off to browse a bookstore to buy my first pregnancy book. Any suggestions?

cakeandcava · 26/07/2012 11:49

Great news!! Go Grublet! Grin It is luffly to be in with the 'normal' crowd, isn't it?

My friend who was diffed last year gave me tons of books, so I've been flicking through quite a few. 'What to expect when you're expecting' is probably the best, if you can handle the slightly jolly-meets-patronising-meets-twee American style of writing. It does have references to pretty much everything though. And the Mumsnet Pregnancy guide is pretty good too!

blonderthanred · 26/07/2012 19:14

That is great and most excellent news! I am so happy for you.

I also recommend WTE and the Mumsnet pregnancy book but just to warn you, the end of the 1st trimester section is all about mc and I found it pretty upsetting. I had to start reading the 2nd tri chapter before I could sleep. Just think maybe they could have had it earlier, or as a separate section.

I also enjoyed Zoe Williams' What Not To Expect... apart from at the start it is about not really wanting children, which can be hard to read for an ESH.

If you haven't already, the WTE and Babycentre phone apps are great.

LauraPalmer · 26/07/2012 20:43

I decided to go with WTE - later on I'll probably get the MN baby guide, too.

If it's not too baybeee-dusterish, do you think we could make a proper PESH Not List? It would be really luffly to see everyone's DD in one place so that I don't have to bother with searching up the fred... I iz well lazy.

Told my mum today - she's thrilled and wanted to know if we were getting married! It was great to be able to share the news. Will tell my dad at the weekend when he's back from a holiday.

I'm gonna lay a random bet for you dory and say it's a boy (while secretly hoping you'll get your girl). Wink

blonderthanred · 27/07/2012 08:42

I'm up for a not-list LP, I was thinking the same. Mine is:

The Lazy PESH Not-List

LauraPalmer (38) DC1 EDD 9/2/13

cakeandcava · 27/07/2012 10:38

Not a bad idea at all -the not-list at the top needs some serious updating. Moley should be about to lay any day now I think?

If we're doing bets on dor's baybee I guess I'll go for girl then -just to even things out Wink

cakeandcava · 27/07/2012 16:52

Finally it's the weekend! And, even better, only four more sleeps until I go on holiday. Not a very long holiday, but a break nevertheless :)

Anyone doing anything exciting this weekend? Laura are you celebrating hitting the magic 12-week mark? I think we'll probably just end up watching the Olympics opening ceremony with some pizza tonight. Oh, the glamour...

LauraPalmer · 27/07/2012 17:29

I think we'll probably watch the opening ceremony, too. I had a little celebration on my own yesterday when TOM had to go back to work after our scan and GP appointments. I treated myself to Pizza Express and spent my meal reading What To Expect! [embarrassed]

Currently I'm trying to 'get over' some lingering irritation I'm feeling from the TinyTOM drop off that happened about an hour ago. His totally shite bioM has managed to have her own child for a grand total of 9 days this month because her out-of-town boyfriend is obviously more important and every time I see her I really want to smack some sense into her.

It's so much better during the school year when the changeovers happen on school days and we don't have to actually see her.

Sorry. Hormonal.

I have very little sympathy for shite parenting. Makes my blood boil.

(And, NO, a new playstation game doesn't make up for your absence you cuntface idiot!)
