...and those of us left are doing a fair bit of bitching:o

I wonder if we could get a [pompoms] going on? Do we have the energy for a campaign?Wink

Right, come on! We're a third of the way through the month and Nickelbabe needs new recruits for her advent thread. Get squeezing:o

Hiya girls. mmmm, it's totally normal for newborns to sleep the hige majority of the day. There seems to come a "ping!" time, somewhere between three and eight weeks of age (depends on the baby) where they suddenly seem more alert and awake for longer periods of time: this is also the time where they may start to social smile, and fix and follow faces more (which is lovely). Usually about 6-10 weeks is when people will encourage you to start giving the baby daytime/nighttime signals if you haven't already.

Can't remember who posted about babies not liking to sleep in the moses basket: again totally normal, most babies seem to prefer being cuddled/rocked to sleep. This is probably because they've just had 9 months of being constantly cuddled and rocked every time we walked about! It's why swaddling and cuddly wraps seem to settle them so much. (I am itching for Widget to get here so that I can use my stretchy Moby wrap!)

A question from this end: having had two home-from-home room deliveries, I'm now wondering about asking to try a hospital waterbirth at least in theory. Esp with my -ahem- bottom playing
up in the last day, and a warm bath being sooo comfortable, I honestly hadn't thought about having one before, but now am wondering if it migh make for a good birth experience for me this time. Who's had one, what was your experience,: and
What's the ettiquette to get one - do you just ask as soon as you get to the hospital, or ask when you ring in in early labour? Is it OK to just pack a stretchy vest top to labour in? If the pool's not free I will manage OK but I want to do everything to avoid labouring in the corridor again!

mopsytop · 17/12/2011 18:20

aethel in my hospital, they tell you to mention it when you ring in early labour. Then if it's not in use, you can use it. You can wear a vest if you like. Or bikini top. Or nothing if you are comfortable with that. I hope to use the birthing pool, but there is only one so if it's in use I won't be able to. And if I have to be induced as expected, won't be able to either. I normally hate baths but since I've been pregnant have really loved them. So I think it might really help me during the labour.

Can't believe you had to labour in the corridor! That is a disgrace!

Mmmmcheese · 17/12/2011 18:22

seven yes she was a bit early at 37+5 so would now be 39 weeks. I can't wait to try my moby wrap but think I need a few more days to recover from my EMCS before I dare try it.

aethel thanks for the reassurance about sleeping. I'm trying to give day/night cues already as we had such problems with a nocturnal DS for a couple of months I want to do everything possible to avoid it! Especially as I will soon have to look after DS and DD on my own. I also have a stubborn pile! It appeared a few weeks before delivery but got worse afterwards due to all the iron I have to take for anemia causing constipation. Am on lactulose and fybogel and drinking loads but still constipated! Sorry can't help with waterbirth question as I've been continually monitored in both labours so never had the choice.

mopsy I'm not surprised you're feeling fed up but hopefully all the practice contractions means that your uterus will be super toned and powerful amd give you a short labour :)

msbaublestwinkle · 17/12/2011 18:30

aethel I have used water with all three, but only Miri was born in water. I used the hospital pool with DD1, we just asked about it when we got to hospital and it happened to be free so I guess each hospital varies. I have loved the water each time, the sheer sense of relief when I got into the pool was heaven! I find it easier to get into comfortable positions in water, it also feels like a cocoon of my own space which helps me to focus. This time, actually delivering in water was incredible, getting to catch her myself, then relaxing in the water while I delivered the placenta all felt great. Stretchy vest would be fine, a bikini or tankini type top might be more comfy though as it won't get waterlogged.

kri5tycringle · 17/12/2011 18:45

mmm thanks for the info about the dummy!

aetheleda what do you do for night and day signals? X

bennybenbear · 17/12/2011 18:58

Hi all, I'm still waiting. At the end of day 2 in hospital. About to have third pessary as first two fell out, with a show so hopefully some progress. No other signs tho so totally fed up and getting upset now as I don't think pessaries are working and no idea what will happen next. 40+13 tomorrow Sad

kri5tycringle · 17/12/2011 19:00

Ps mmm Saul is only awake during feeds, then he falls to sleep straight away afterwards! He has started to be awake for longer after prob 1 feed a day!

Usually he feeds bang on 3 hours during the day, but today he has been wanting food every hour or so... hope he isn't getting ill!

kri5tycringle · 17/12/2011 19:02

Aww bec you poor thing, it must be so frustrating! You have a very comfy womb! Will they give you a drip tomorrow? Ahh sorry just realised you said you didn't know!

Can't wait to meet baby bear!

DarcieandSnowballsmum · 17/12/2011 19:22

Benny Sorry to hear there's no progression much. hopefully tomorrow they will do something else.

I'm on my 2nd cup of RLT Sad better do something it tastes bleurgh

KateKringle · 17/12/2011 20:08

kri5ty I wouldn't worry about a day of increased feeds. I remember DD having the odd 'growth spurt' day when she fed loads more than normal.

bennybenbear · 17/12/2011 20:15

After posting that I just had another internal and they can break my waters as a couple of cm dilated now. So they are phoning down to delivery to see when it's likely I'll go down! Glad theres progress but getting nervous now. If I don't progress after waters being broken I'll go on the drip eek!

aethelfleda · 17/12/2011 20:48

Thanks girls for info on birthing pools! Think I will ask when I get to that point

Go Benny!!!

Kri5ty, for day vs night signals all you do is emphasise to baby what time of the day/night cycle it is. Not "it's 3.30am: shuttup!", but by non verbal cues. So when baby wakes in the day for a feed, talk to them, change their bum in the light, tickle them, stimulate them, if they are awake show them things, sing or put on musical toys if you're into that. If it's the night time then keep the light level lower (obv you need to see to change them!) maybe have a little lamp rather than the main light on, whisper to baby and sing softly, get the deed (changing then feeding) done, and then try (!) to settle them back down. Just gives them a vague idea that day and night are different.

The feeding all day thing is totally usual and called a "growth spurt": usually lasts for 2-3 days and then settles. They typically occur (this is from the KellyMom website) at:

"Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months (more or less). Babies don't read calendars, however, so your baby may do things differently."

OiMistletoe · 17/12/2011 21:13

Good luck Bec!! hope it all kicks off tonight!
Kristy little Alistair can't stop feeding either at the moment. He's even doing all the mouth movements when he's asleep.
Kate I haven't checked, but MN says my profile is there - try logging on with your original name.

It's been ages since we had a pelvic floor reminder, so, to those who still/already can.... SQUEEZE!

The midwife came today, and helped me a bit with the feeding, so it's not such agony any more, although the first latch is still painful. Last night, though, I was just crying as I dithered over latching her, as it's just terrifying to be facing 30 minutes of nipple-torture! I guess I allowed Helena to comfort-suck when I still only had colostrum, and that just ripped the covering off my nipples. Sad However, she managed to lose only 200g of her 3.8kg birth weight, so I was somehow producing something! msbaublestwinkle, how on earth are you managing such marathons for Miranda?

She also disproved my Bump and Baby Paradox by telling me that my stomach wall muscles have separated, which is probably why I've been having such abdominal pains (which I thought could be anxiety induced by the pain of latching on). She said: "I could put a fist through there." Great. Well, if I'm not the embodiment of a new discovery in Doctor Who/StarTrek physics, at least I can imagine I'm the victim of a sneaky, thunder-fisted superhero... Hmm Ouch.

Has anyone else who's popped noticed her fingernails growing strong and long? I wondered whether I wasn't losing vitamins (calcium, I guess) to the baby any more, so it's all feeding into me again?

Congratulations, TheFirstNoelChinchilla! It's great to hear the first days have been calm and full of love...

Fast work, KateKringle! - both the birth and the getting home. Good thing, too; your DD didn't have long to wait! Xmas Wink

How's it going, Pully, Sorelip, mopsy, DarcieandSnowballsmum, Hawthers, bennybenbear?
DarcieandSnowballsmum, if you don't like the tea, pop some sugar or honey in it. It brings out flavour, and I don't imagine any of us will be drinking it in preference to any other Brew in future, so you're not likely to get "too" used to the sugared version, IYSWIM?

LittleMIss, you'll have to have that tooth made into a charm, to show your LO what you sacrificed!

kri5ty, that's brilliant news about the settling - no matter what you felt about dummies, if they are helping with a colicky child, surely they are actual "smarties"!
Have you told your OH you don't want him to go? Just for the next time, could his friend (or yours) come to you, instead of your going out?

aethelfleda, witch hazel is definitely available in Boots and Sainsbury's (and probably Tesco, too). DS thinks it's magic stuff, but I didn't know it could help with piles as well!
The birthing pool protocol in the hospitals I've been able to give birth at has been to request it when you ring in, and if it's free you can use it. Are you planning a home birth? If so, is there time for you to get hold of a pool for home?

AReindeerCalledHorse, what a bugger about the sweep! Surely it was on the notes for your appointment that you were to have one, and they could have told you earlier that she wasn't qualified willing instead of letting you turn up! I visited the antenatal clinic at my GP's a couple of times before the birth, but kept my 41 week appointment with the normal clinic, as the local MWs told me up front that they couldn't do the sweep, or not there. Because I knew, I was not disappointed, but you didn't have that chance! Angry

figgy, sympathies about the bath. If it makes you feel better, I'm having trouble, and am not even pregnant any more!

OiMistletow, I hope the patch helps, especially as the effect now seems emotional as well as physical. Please don't feel guilty about ignoring him while you are in pain; he's interested in the milk, and probably doesn't yet miss your conversation! You will have lots of time to talk to him later, and I'm sure some skin-to-skin would be communion enough for him, to get over the temporary lack of communication!

Honey, you;ve gone awfully quiet; I hope that's because things are going well rather than that things are going badly? Smile

SoTired, that's really impressive work you have been putting in on the jaundice! Xmas Smile

Mmmmcheese, glad to have you back on line. Does the fact that you felt capable of posting (and, presumably, sitting) mean you are mending, despite the complications?
Re: the constipation question, we keep an eye on bowel movements for DS, and have found that melon, particularly watermelon (which still seems to be available at Waitrose) and grapes seem to be the best at getting someone to "go". Sorry for TMI, but with large amounts of watermelon, we can sometimes even see remains of the red pulp in DS's poo - that's how fast (intact) it has come through.

Tinselperion · 17/12/2011 22:07

Hello all - a quick check in from us here now that DH has made you all weepy (I cried reading it yesterday - reading about the birth through his eyes is very Sad) - I am a very lucky woman and our perfect DS has the best daddy. DS's name is Pirran, I will put a pic or two up when I can - he is the world's most beautiful baby IMHO!

We are home now and I have posted on the BF forum about today's lack of wet or dirty nappies - trying to be chill as latching was pretty easy and milk not in yet so hopefully this is nothing to worry about.

I am just so in love - amazing wonderful feeling,

Pompoms and good vibes for those still waiting - darcies, benny, figgy, mopsy - hope it all kicks off soon!!

msbaublestwinkle · 17/12/2011 22:18

plu comfort sucking itself won't cause nipple damage, it is latch (and occasionally tounge tie) that cause it. However, it the latch is now only hurting for a couple of seconds when Helena latches on it is probably just residual pain while you're healing and nipples heal quickly so hopefully it will be gone soon.

As for how I manage the feeding marathons...I am mean to her and re-latch at the slightest bit of discomfort.

DeckTheHawthersWithBells · 17/12/2011 22:30

Still waiting over here. Now 39+2 which feels overdue as was always aiming just to get to 37 weeks as high risk pg. Never been so keen to feel pain, see mucus, wet myself or get the shots. Here's hoping tonight is the night.

Mmmmcheese · 17/12/2011 22:45

plu I am feeling better thanks and slowly on the mend. Managed to get out for a walk yesterday and was probably out for an hour or so (walking v slowly, hanging onto DH!) Which I was pleased with. Harder to get out at weekends as DS is around and we are still under chickenpox quarantine until Monday so DS still not met DD and not celebrated his birthday either as I was still in hospital. Good job he is too young to know, poor thing!

Does anyone know when I can have a bath after a c section? I was told not to have too prolonged showers so as not to get the stitches too wet. Does that mean I can't have a bath until the stitches are dissolved?

I am getting nipple pain too, mainly when latching but sometimes continues a while. Think DD has a tongue tie so that could be why, although its not as bad as DS's was. Will go to bfeeding clinic on Tues and see what they say. We had DS's done privately last time but think it costs £150 (gulp). Maybe I should just see it as a Christmas present for my nipples!

ChristmasPullyWoolOver · 17/12/2011 23:25

'lo all. Hope all well and congratulations to all new babies Grin

Was planning to do a big catch up thread this evening...but excitingly my waters broke with a dramatic gush earlier! Just back from hosp and hoping to get some sleep before the main event...

BeeMyBaby · 18/12/2011 00:08

Ooo pully! Maybe you and benny will both have babies on the 18th!

Tinsel I think that you only need to worry if you see urates (sp?) in the nappy with a large weight loss (I did with both my DDs so was given a feeding plan by the mws).

My SIL had her DD2 today, I am very excited to meet the new arrival, she was 5 days late and over 9lbs but SIL didn't need any stitches this time and had a much quicker labour so I'm really so pleased for her.

fusam · 18/12/2011 00:16

Pully pom poms out for you, good luck and yes getting a lot of rest sounds very sensible.

mmm hope you feel 100% again soon. I was told to take it easy and no baths at least until the stitches dissolve and the outer wound has healed.

plu ouch re: the abdominal separation, know nothing about them but hope they get back to normal quickly. PMSL at your analogy. Glad latch is now sorted, I remember reading somewhere that feeding shouldn't hurt other than the initial toe curling bit. Do you have some lansolin handy? That and airing out my nipples in order to heal between feeds helped me loads.

Hawters and others who are waiting am still here waiting with all of you. Am trying to keep busy and trying to look forward to a lovely Christmas, although it would be perfect with a snuffly newborn. Really really hoping not to be in hospital Christmas day though as this is the first year ever I have been organised due to Mat leave.

Mmmmcheese · 18/12/2011 02:17

plu forgot to say I have pretty badly split stomach muscles too. Did your MW give you any advice?

kri5tycringle · 18/12/2011 02:24

aetheleda thank you :) Ooo we do those things anyway at day and night so that's good to know! shame he falls to sleep straight away in the day do doesn't realise Haha. And thanks for the info on growth spurts, also thanks kate... it ties in as he is nearly 3 weeks old

plu I am now a 'smartie' convert! Most of the time he won't have it, or spits it out after 5 mins, but it really does settle him. He doesn't even cry at change time with one! I guess I was being silly! Just worrying about him becoming dependant, but will cross that bridge when we come to it!

oi I'm glad alistair is feeding well... although I bet its very tiring for you! Is he a bit better in himself now?
bec I hope its all a go for you, we need a meet up soon, me, thee and vanessa and the bundles of joy!

Does anyone know (i don't think there is), but anyway I can help the linear negra to fade? Or is that wishful thinking?

Hurrah! Change, feed, wind and settled in an hour... I'm wide awake though now lol :o

pompom pompom pompom

Ooo and also squeezy!

kri5tycringle · 18/12/2011 02:25

pully get some sleep... and get jiggling about... that's an order! We want a baby tomorrow please!!
