Hopefully no one else has done it while my phone is messing about!

Contractions are a wave in that the pain builds, peaks then fades off. When I had/have them my entire bump goes hard. The pain intensifies then the bump relaxes as the pain fades. Contractions do not mean early baby. I had them a lot for 3 weeks before DD arrived one day before her due date.

ParsleyLion1 · 30/11/2011 13:25

My bump didn't go hard. I'll stick with the samba explanation for now! Grin

Oeisha · 30/11/2011 14:01

I can second the bump hardening thing. Watching the contractions I had on the CTG, I could see my belly tense up with a peak on the CTG and then relax again and often feel the whole thing happening. The pain, not being caused by the contractions in themselves would come and go sometimes worsening with the contractions, sometimes a bout of contractions would just make the whole friggin thing hurt a lot more.
I get a similar feeling with the Higgs-Bosons*, but not as intense.

frillymilly and anyone else newish to the thread, FYI HBs or Higgs-Bosons are Braxton Hicks for us lot...there's some history somewhere of somone's DP? calling them this by accident and it's just stuck. Another common one for us is BSM meaning "bat-shit mental"...

cakes following your logic's great! I'm now extrapolating it to this: almonds are reported to help with heartburn and indigestion, thus, I can now chomp marzipan when I feel grim...if she lets me without puking...

Fryn · 30/11/2011 14:19

Mmmm marzipan...

I've been attempting to catch up all morning, but pesky work stuff keeps coming up (to be fair, I am at work, so I shouldn't be toooo surprised).

Anyway, sorry to hear of annoying DHs - mine is only in the mini-league of annoyance, but he did roll in a bit drunk last night, woke me up and proceeded to tell me all about what his friends had talked about, then showed me a load of stuff he'd printed from the internet about a local wine club (yeah, thanks), and then passed out snoring. I'm currently plotting my revenge.

welcome frilly!

parsley sounds like a Strictly fan to me. Stick with that and don't panic!

GiraffeAHolic · 30/11/2011 14:26

Dd decided to get up 6 times between midnight and 5am Hmm

Just waddled my way around town to get nativity costume bits for tomorrow's nursery production.

Welcome frilly, I'm liking that we are still gathering passengers.

parsley sounds like a movement rather than a contraction

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 30/11/2011 14:27

OK - I have a mini dilemma....

DH has spent months organising a Xmas dinner for his flying Sqn this weekend. I've found out that another couple going have a sick baby at the moment - she's got some unnamed virus and virulent rash. I'm chatting 'oh so casually' to the mum on FB to try and find out if they know what it is, but am I being totally paranoid to ask them not to come near me or DH at the dinner, or even to tell DH it's them or us, but someone has to not go? I really really don;t want to go and then find out they've given me german measles or something equally hideous... Answer me quickly or I'm going to risk my life on AIBU :S :)

And yes, I have much logic when it comes to allowing food treats. For example - smarties are chocolate, chocolate has some endorphin promoting chemicals in which make me happy, it's good for my baby if I'm happy, therefore smarties are good for the baby. See? Works for nearly everything!

GiraffeAHolic · 30/11/2011 14:40

Are they planning on coming to the dinner and leaving the poorly baby at home?

FrillyMilly · 30/11/2011 14:40

Are they bringing the child? I think you are possibly being a tad paranoid if they aren't.

Dd had a viral rash a couple of weeks ago but the viral infection was just tonsillitis. Although chickenpox rash looks similar at the beginning. Have you had chickenpox? Have you had your MMRs? Since they introduced vaccines very few women get rubella in pregnancy and if youve had chicken pox you're unlikely to get it again. Have they taken the child to the doctors? Rubella is quite distinctive. I know how you feel though. I think I'm a bit of an expert on infectious diseases after googling a lot in first pregnancy.

ParsleyLion1 · 30/11/2011 14:42

I think you can safely tell them that you need to keep a distance. I'm sure they'll understand. Perhaps DH can mention it- those things often sound better coming from blokes - makes it seem less hormonal.

I don't think you need to go as far as banning your (or their) presence.

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 30/11/2011 14:43

They're not bringing the baby. I think it's being left with grandparents...

I don;t want to be one of those paranoid pregnant mums, but similarly I don;t want to blithely be in contact with an infectious illness when both me and baby would be more vulnerable to it... Just wondering how cautious to be, really. My mum thinks I should go, but just avoid handshaking and kisses with the couple in question...

ParsleyLion1 · 30/11/2011 14:45

Exactly cakes I'm sure they'll understand if you just avoid the close proximity stuff.

GiraffeAHolic · 30/11/2011 14:47

To be fair, I would say that if both parents are well, then it's unlikely to be that contagious and if they don't have it then you can't catch it.

Other than that I don't know what to suggest, a surgical mask and alcohol hand gel maybe :)

FrillyMilly · 30/11/2011 14:50

That's probably the best idea. In all likelihood the child has a bad cold but even a cold when pregnant can leave you wiped.

addictediam · 30/11/2011 15:12

How old is the baby? As a mum of an allergic dd who always has a rash for no reason I would say you're probably being alittle paranoid (understandably). Dd gets a rash when she's having an allergic reaction, when she has a cold, when shes tired, when she spends time in other peoples homes. She alwways has a rash! And can be accompined by vomiting, runny nose, temp. More often than not there is nothing wrong with her Confused but we always take her to the dr to get an all clear before putting her around other children. But it would never occur to me for me and dh to stay away from people, unless we had similar symptoms

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 30/11/2011 15:29

Baby is, hmm, about 7 months. All I have to go on is what the mum told me: "Some sort of viral infection which has given her the most horrid rash."

Fryn · 30/11/2011 15:56

Agree with the aboves - go! Just avoid rubbing up against them or snogging either of them. Phew - lucky you won't be drinking!

Talking of weird rashes, I come up in hives if I drink that Vitabiotics ironically named "Well"woman drink...

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 30/11/2011 16:08

Heard back from the mum again - apparent the GP has ruled out any of the usual suspects (CP, measles etc) and it's most likely just to be a random rash as a reaction to the virus which is common in smalls.

Dh and I now feeling a bit foolish and PFB-ish

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 30/11/2011 16:33

Huh - just found out my poor old dad has been instructed to do Jury Service for a fortnight in the middle of Dec. He runs his own business, of which he is the only employee - hope his business doesn't suffer too badly :( Also hope his first grandchild doesn't arrive whilst he's in the middle of it - does anyone know if they let you have a day off jury duty to go and visit your first grandchild? Bet they bloody don't :(

DO NOT COME EARLY

ParsleyLion1 · 30/11/2011 17:10

If he is lucky he won't get picked and they'll let him go back to work - that's what happened to OH. If you get a case though you can't have a day off.

You can reject Jury service - but only once I think. My dad loved it - but just his kind of thing....

addictediam · 30/11/2011 17:17

You can defer several times I think but you need good reason. Is his business retail based? They will pay loss of earnings but useless if he's manual or retail work.

And rashes are very common with viral things, best to get it checked out but dont panic too much when your baby has one

Thanks for kind messages. Going away wold never be an issue but the content of his e-mails and his activities suggests that I may be facing having 2nd bubs as a single mum.

greenlady78 · 30/11/2011 17:43

New thread and I managed to read it all and now can't remember anything...eh?
