Ladies, our previous thread was getting full so here is a lovely new shiny home for us all.

I've put some comfy cushions around and plenty of pregnancy safe snacks and drinks. The Segway park is in the corner over there next to the stack of glittery vom buckets (plenty of extra buckets too for all the newbies).

In the corner over here you'll find our library of leaflets including sections on early pregnancy private scan clinics, pushchairs and car seats.

Hope you all like it very much :)

I knew ZERO when I had dd. Literally. I had managed to not go to even one ante natal class. None of my friends had babies. I was clueless.
She's fine :)

Biscuitsandtea · 14/10/2011 16:59

Ditto Pomme (although i did go to ante natal classes, but they mainly told me about labour and birth rather than babies!)

I had never held a baby, changed a nappy etc etc etc. Friends had babies but lived miles away so no one i ever saw had babies, no nieces or nephews etc.

I didn't even know things like MN existed so just bumbled through on our own.

You really will pick it up along the way - and no question is too silly to ask, as I probably asked it when I was pg with DS!

Thanks, Biscuits and Pommed! I will attempt to stop worrying that I will break the baby in the first week through ignorance of the correct sleeping attire...

Biscuitsandtea · 14/10/2011 17:19

You wait til you get on to whether it should be vests or bodysuits or sleepsuits or some combination thereof......

musicalmrs · 14/10/2011 17:21

Love - I am equally uneducated in babies. I'll be the first in my generation of my family to have kids, same with DH's, and none of my friends have any! I've been told babies are pretty hard to break (and am hoping that's right!). I'm currently very excited about the whole thing, despite knowing nothing - I'm sure the fear will set it later ;)

Biscuits, I know the time will come, just seems like it's taking aaaaaages! I'm 9w+3 according to my last scan. Yesterday I had to make my excuses as to why I couldn't take part in a concert in the north of the country (staying a few nights) next April - can't wait until I can give them the actual reason, rather than "Oh, I think I might be busy that weekend.."..

I think it might be partly because of the stress and the worry, then the relief of things being ok, but yet still not being at the magical 12 week point! Anyone got a time machine?!

Biscuitsandtea · 14/10/2011 17:27

Seriously ladies, you'll worry about getting the 'rght answer to a million and one things in terms of practicalities and the one thing i've learned is that there isn't really a right answer after all. So as long as you're not doing anything negligent you'll be doing great I'm sure!

Those weeks are ticking by Musical - we'll be at 12 weeks before you know it although I appreciate the time might drag a bit more for you

Time machine wise, we were discussing degrees etc on the other thread and there was someone who did quantum physics I think - just can't remember who......

OP posts:
Biscuitsandtea · 14/10/2011 17:29

and when i say 'rght I actually mean 'right' (obviously Blush)

So, did Pamuk croak before or after they did this? Poor Mary if that was her first go - I do feel sorry for her now......

wrong thread - scratch that - conversation about Downton Abbey.....

OP posts:
LoveInAColdGrave · 14/10/2011 17:35

It did take me a while to twig that the ones without sleeves or legs were vests not bodysuits and thus more underwear than outerwear (unless, presumably, it's very hot)... I had been wondering why their arms and legs didn't get cold!

Biscuitsandtea · 14/10/2011 17:40

See Love, you claim to know nothing - but you already know what they are! I plainly remember DH and I In mothercare and me ending up sitting on the floor while we worked out what we needed and what they were all for!

Thanks, Biscuits Grin.

scarletfingernail · 14/10/2011 17:47

Yay for a fantastic scan Jaggy, I'm delighted for you. Some good brooking going on there for your bean to have skipped a week. What's your due date now?

jaggythistle · 14/10/2011 17:55

I have gone from 1 may to 25 April.

Kinda puzzled how I skipped a week, have been on Fertility friend peering at my chart just there Blush

Well, there was plenty of SWI throughout that month and it would explain my early BFP...

DS was 9 days late though, so I am fully expecting this one to just turn up whenever too Grin

He was in teh room during the scan going " there's Mummy's tummy!" and getting DH to lift him up .... to look at my actual tummy. Grin Aw. If you ask him "what's in mummy's tummy?" now he does say 'Baby' though.

He was trying to look under my t-shirt when we got home as if he would see the baby!

scarletfingernail · 14/10/2011 18:07

Aww jaggy your DS sounds like mine. He's been doing the same thing, lifting my top and pointing to my tummy and saying "baby in there". It's ok unless he tries to do it in public Blush

I'm also confused about how I managed to skip a week. I've gone from April 26th to the 20th. I defintely was not pregnant 6 days before I thought I was. I was using CB fertility monitor and know exactly when I ov'd. I was a little bit concerned that it might be an indicator of something being wrong, but the lady who took my blood for the NT screening assured me it's nothing to worry about and it's very common. I'm also going to assume it'll probably will arrive late because of it. DS's due date was brought forward by 3 days at his 12 week scan and he then arrived 3 days late on the exact day I'd worked out from ovulating.

LoveInAColdGrave · 14/10/2011 18:13

My date was brought forward at 12 weeks too, and it just doesn't tie in with Fertility Friend dates, so I too am assuming the baby will be late.

jaggythistle · 14/10/2011 18:26

Glad i 'm not the only one puzzled!

I was expecting a few days difference if they went by LMP, but teh scan measuring a week later hasme a bit Confused.

My friend's DD was getting her big bump out to kiss in all sorts of places apparently Grin Need to get round and see them as baby DD2 arrived 5 weeks early recently!

musicalmrs · 14/10/2011 18:26

Maybe you're all just quick growers - or rather, your babies are! Although I can understand the principle of dating by size (isn't that how it's usually done?), it can't be a perfect system.

scarletfingernail · 14/10/2011 18:44

I'm not sure what measurements they use for dating musical. Whether it's size of the baby, development of organs or other body parts, placenta development, uterus size, amount of fluid, or a combination of everything, I'm not sure. I suppose it would make sense if it was a combination given that we're all different sizes and our babies will also be different sizes.

DH and I aren't likely to have small babies at term as DH is 6ft 4 and I'm also taller than average. So I hope it isn't done solely on size of the baby as I can't imagine it would accurate to do so at all, therefore we're bound to be give an earlier date. They are precise enough to give an exact due date (although we all know it could be within 5 weeks of that date) so I imagine there must be a technical calculation based on more than just size.

Someone will hopefully know how's it's done and I'll probably be told I've over-complicated it and it is done on size after all! Grin

Biscuitsandtea · 14/10/2011 19:17

I'm not sure how they do the measurements either. I mean it looks like it is just x cm = gestational age of x days when they do it, but as you say Scarlet it's never going to be very accurate, given the wild variations in the weights of babies when they're born and as you say, parent size etc.

I wonder....

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 14/10/2011 19:21

Yay, congrats Jaggy! And a whole week less (sort of).

Scarlet, I always thought it was just done on size, but may be wrong. Is there a doctor in the house?

scarletfingernail · 14/10/2011 19:28

Hey Dumbledore, good to hear from you. Been thinking about you all week. I'll be thinking of you all day Monday and have everything crossed for you.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 14/10/2011 19:43

Hi everyone! Sorry for the late post, I had a late appointment time and that ended up being delayed so in the end I almost missed my blood test! I'm super happy though because everything seems fine so far!

I think the dating is done purely based on the Crown-to-Rump length, and mine had me spot on with my ovulation dates, which was also spot on with my 8 week scan measurement. So I didn't skip any time but at least I didn't go backwards!

My little man (doubly convinced it's a boy now although obviously at only 12 weeks the doctors haven't caught up with my inner knowledge yet Wink ) was swimming around like a champion! You've all mentioned the wriggling but I was still blown away by just how much movement there was!! He was nonstop, swimming from side to side and up and down! I couldn't believe all that activity's been going on in there whilst I've been worrying that I might not even be pg anymore!!

Obviously my combined test results won't come back until next week, but the nuchal measurement was 1.4 which made me happy, hopefully that means the final score will be low (i.e. high!).

The blood test results from last week were all good too. Turns out I have natural immunity to chicken pox despite never having had the illness! Yay!! I read somewhere ages ago that a teeny tiny percentage of people are born immune to chicken pox, and I did wonder if I was one simply because both my siblings had chicken pox while I was at home but I've still never caught it. It's nice to have a blood test to confirm though! Feeling much more confident about seeing all of DH's cousins' toddlers at Christmas time now!!

Overall I'm just thrilled at the moment! (Musical was completely right about the scan totally wiping out my bad week!) Many thanks for all the words of support earlier, I had a quick peek on my phone during the drive over to the hospital and I was particularly comforted by Pomme's mantra! I may stick that on my desk (now that I can tell work people! Woo hoo!)

Love I'm not a lawyer, I work in finance at a massive firm in the City. Our hours aren't quite as crazy as lawyers or bankers, but on a bad week they're pretty similar!

Loving all the stories about DC reacting to the pregnancies, all your kids sound so incredibly cute!! Also I'll be keeping up the No Brooking for Meconium's scan, for Wants' sister, and also for Too's test on Monday.

I'm seriously considering going to bed now...

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 14/10/2011 19:46

Forgot to say congrats to Jaggy! (Babybrain!) I'm so happy your scan went well! When is your 20 week scan booked for? Mine's on 19th Dec, so a lovely early Christmas present (fingers crossed). My due date is 28th April by the way, so we really are almost exactly the same!! Grin
