Had no idea what to call it, sorry. Just googled third trimester and that was the recommendation...

What is the thing with isofix??
Pay £100+ so that you don't have to mess about with the seat belt?
We bought a pram, and a car seat, and the adaptors (only £20-30) for if we want to sit the car seat on the pram. However, you're not supposed to have a baby in a car seat for over 2 hrs, so that tells me a change of seat (into the pram) is better. I didn't buy the carry cot for the pram either - just the stroller - as that can be set practically horizontal, and looks dead cosy with the foot muff - and will last until the child is older.
There's so much stuff you could buy, it is very confusing!
Also, baby bags - it's a bag with pockets, and sometimes a mini change mat, and usually costs up to £100 and says cutesy stuff on it. If I'm going to spend £100 on a bag, it will be gorgeous and stylish - NOT cutesy!

jomouse · 05/10/2011 16:58

Hi everyone,

So much to catch up on! Hope everyone doing ok
Lots of supportive hugs to sorelip, cheese, fairy and to anyone else who is having a rough day/week/pregnancy.
I'm nearing the end of 2 week holiday after moving house. Its been totally divine (if quite hectic, I don't recommend trips to the tip in 30 deg heat and 5 mile walks) and getting me all geared up for when mat leave start in 3 weeks. I don't want to go back to work...petulant face... and a very hectic schedule with a massive project to finish off before I can leave guilt free.
We start our NCT classes on Thursday - anyone else doing them? Going to wait until i see how DH reacts to that before I push the
Other stuff starting to come together with colour scheme agreed for on nursery, slowly putting together bits for hospital bag (bleeeuurgh to super mat pads and disposable knickers :()...
Our bugaboo Chameleon arrives next week
Oimissus your Stokke looks lush - I have mild pram envy :)

hawthers · 05/10/2011 17:00

glergh having a total shocker of a day. been shouted at by a partner here who is just a meany and can't go home until i've finalised two more things that really should be straightforward but just aren't. plus had to see my nasty very helpful counselling woman who is messing with my head more helping me get over the trauma of DS' pregnancy before the new nugget arrives.

god would just love a good glass of red wine - hmm will have to bank it for December.

sorry am just whinging now and clearly being on MN is not helping me finish my crappy work and get home asap.

Awomancalledhorse · 05/10/2011 17:13

Oi, I felt like I was the only one who didn't get all this new stuff, Yay for you!
For our changing bag we're buying a...Berghaus rucksack;
Better for my back, DH can use it & we can have the baby strapped into a carrier & not have the bag being a big problem! MIL (who obv. thinks that no one ever had baybeees before the invention of baby monitors) makes a Hmm face whenever I suggest something practical like that.

PullyWoolOver · 05/10/2011 17:24

Hello all , can I join you? Due 16 December with DC1 so have obv found my spiritual home here!

Support tights v apt, my ankles have disappeared today for some reason - boo!

Anyway, as you were, am off to read up on this thread. I may be some time...!

Xiaoxiong · 05/10/2011 17:39

Welcome Pully - goodness you're brave to read through all these posts, you can skip my posts as they're mostly whinging, I think 930 of the 931 posts on here are me moaning about stuff Grin

OiMissus · 05/10/2011 17:39

awch is your rucksack ISO 14001, national child wotsit and eco-lentil approved?
My parents and family give me the raised eyebrows whenever I mention anything that is post-1970s.
My mum was very approving of me not using disposable nappies, - if terries were good enough for her generation... - But then, when she saw my new bamboo samples she was positively in awe.
And a warm welcome to pully!
jomouse am dying for mat leave too. Only 6 and a bit weeks to go for me. we aren't doing the NCT classes, but we start the NHS classes on the 18th.
hawthers sorry about your crap day. I eat cough candy sweets instead of drinking red wine. :)
Right, time to get orf home. DH is down in fancy London tonight so I've got some Downton catching up to do. :)
(My maternity tights were all in the wash today, so I wore normal tights. BIG mistake. They are rolled low but I still fel like my bottom half is being chopped orf. Not good.)

hawthers · 05/10/2011 17:50

we had a mothercare changing bag with DS which i've always hated and is really bulky and looks minging. this time i think we are going to upgrade to this and this

plupervert · 05/10/2011 17:53

sorelip, going to the GP sounds the best thing to do for a start. They have access to many more resources than us "internet randoms", and some of those resources might actually require a medical letter to access! (interesting idea from Tyelperion about ganging up on your father; I guess that depends whose name is on the tenancy agreement....? but your brothers might be able to exert pressure by not lending to him?) So sorry you have this instability to worry about. I really don't think many people understand how much of an impact stress at home can have. If you can stand to spend more time online, there is a lot to be learned in the Legal Matters and www.mumsnet.com/Talk/propertyProperty/DIY sections (of you can ignore all the posts about Farrow & Ball colours in Property/DIY!) of Mumsnet. One source of legal advice often cited is Shelter: they have fact sheets on rights, and even a helpline.

DS and I are both having the 'flu jab, as he has mild asthma and is under 5, so high risk.

I carry a rucksack, too, Awomancalled horse! I'll get a bigger one for two (have seen a gym bag in Tesco), but it's the ideal change bag, as far as I'm concerned. All the bloody messenger-styles ones are literally a pain in the back; I had to give up on messenger style bags for work ages ago Sad. By the way, has your Berghaus got a separate good-sized pocket for the nasties (nappies, crapped-on clothes, puked-on muslins)? Sorry to be graphic, but that's not the sort of thing you want mixing with the clean muslins, clean clothes, toys, blankets, and your money!

Can I ask advice about the raspberry-leaf stuff? How often does one have to "dose", either for tea or tablets?

Deliveries here, too! We had our next stage carseat for DS and a buggyboard delivered today, so I've been doing "wimmin's DIY" - no way could DH do this! Mind you, I simply cannot remember how to strap up DS's old carseat in "baby" configuration.

P.S. aethelfleda, has the soreness subsided from your fall?

plupervert · 05/10/2011 17:57

This is the backpack I was looking at. It had no price on it when I saw it in store, and I'm now a bit shocked to see it at £12.... so maybe it's not going to be very robust. Still, it's got two big pockets and a clear bag for crap-covered really dirty things. Grin What do you reckon?

plupervert · 05/10/2011 18:07

Sorry, you got lost in the "wash" of posts, PullyWoolOver! Welcome in to the final spin! Grin

BeeMyBaby · 05/10/2011 18:28

we still have our silvercross surf pushchair which is nice but I regret buying it overall, I much prefer the out and about double we have and the petite star as they are both so much lighter and easier to manoeuvre, though i'm not sure how suitable they are for newborns. I am looking forward to using a carrier for DD (again) and the baby much more than a pushchair.

welcome pully!

Welcome PullyWoolOver!

Sorelip, I am sorry to hear about your stressful home life and depression - it's great that your doctor is being helpful and I hope that you can get some concrete help now. Is there any way you can move out anytime soon?

fusam, sorry to hear your mum is being a pain. I don't know what I'd do in your situation - although with a baby on the way, I might just cancel Christmas to be honest. You don't need extra stress

Oi, your win is the perfect excuse to go and have a lovely cup of coffee or tea and relax with a book in a nice coffee shop!

I have not thought about buggies yet, because a friend gave me a pram which will last until baba is 6 months old. Plan is to check out the buggies other mothers are using during that time and see which appears to be most popular/most suitable for me. My sis had a Phil&Teds for her 2 and loved it - if you're planning on having more than one, is apparently a good idea, but it's not very small on the negative side.

I am booked to have the flu jab this weekend. I would rather be safe than sorry, esp. as I tend towards asthma and often get bronchitis even when not pregnant.

I am busy busy trying to crack on and get as much of this PhD done as possible before baby gets here - got in a bit of a slump but sudden spurt of activity as I had a major reality check! Have set some very tight deadlines and am determined to meet them. Have started working in the library with no internet access to avoid distractions! This thread has been so busy today! I suspect internet access would have slowed me down :)

mopsytop · 05/10/2011 18:30

p.s. totally forgot to say, had an extra scan the other day and it's a girl. Thrilled. Didn't mind either way, but very excited now!

mopsytop · 05/10/2011 18:34

Oh, AWCH and Oi, also forgot to say that I was reading Which baby seat reviews and it seems that Isofix is more secure than seatbelt (if the seat fits your car well and is fitted properly). I hate all the choice - no idea which car seat to buy, in spite of Which!

msbuggywinkle · 05/10/2011 18:50

Welcome pully and congratulations mopsy girls are fabulous.

On the flu vaccine, I won't be having it as I had a vaccine reaction when I was 3, after much discussion with my GP it seems to be safer for me and my DDs not to be vaccinated. One of my issues with vaccines is that the ingredients are so complex that it is impossible to work out what I reacted to.

I'm no help on prams...have never used one as I find them annoying. But we use all Maxi cosi car seats as they seemed to be the best and I'm sticking to what I know!

mopsytop · 05/10/2011 18:57

MaxiCosi scored well on the Which review msbuggy, and their tests are way more rigorous than the European standard ones which carseats have to comply with, so I will definitely be basing my purchase on their reviews. It's one thing I feel I want the best quality for, as it could potentially be so important.

Awomancalledhorse · 05/10/2011 19:18

Welcome Pully! Sorry to hear about your ankles disappearing, how bloody thoughtless of them Grin

Oi, your mum sounds like the opposite of my MIL! Can we swap? My MIL thinks I'm mental to be wanting reuseable nappies, because disposables are 'so good nowdays', but she also thinks I'm mad for wanting a home birth so meh!
I'm hoping new Berghaus can last through the destructive nature of a baby and its assorted fluids, will put a liner in the front pocket to protect the rest of the bag from liquids.
Like the bag plupervert sure it will be robust enough, (if only DH thought lilac was a manly colour!), that pouch thing is a great idea!

hawthers, that H&M bag is lovely! Like the travel wotsit mabob too!

Oooh mopsy, congrats on the girl!

fusam · 05/10/2011 20:43

Welcome pully! How's pregnancy been treating you so far?

woohooo prams galore! I wish there was a pram exchange as I want to try them all.

Ty isofix bases are meant to be more secure than belts. I like them also as you can click the seat in and out with baby, especially when little one is asleep and you don't want to faff around.

sevensevenseven · 05/10/2011 20:44

mopsy don't rule out the phil & teds for being big, despite it's size it actually fits in the boot of both a ford fiesta and a vw polo. I'd highly recommend it for anyone thinking of having another child, resell values of pushchairs is crap. I had a silvercross 3D (for shopping) and a mamas and papas 03 sport (for off-road) when DS was a baby. I spent £500 on both, the same as I've spent on my P&T. I sold the 03 sport for £75 and couldn't sell the silvercross at £75 so I'll try and get £50 for it.

Hi pully.

mmmcheese I don't know whether the baby is engaged. I have appointments at 26 and 30 weeks rather than 28 here for some reason. Bump dropped just after my 26 week appt, I've got my 30 week appt next Wednesday. DS was engaged this early though so I'm not too worried, just fed up of baby being on my bladder!

My back/top of my bum has been really painful today. Hopefully it'll be a bit better tomorrow as we're hoping to get all of the Christmas shopping done. Can anyone give me any ideas of what else I can put in the baby's stocking? I've got some Burts bees baby moisturiser and a rattle, I'll get a little book of some sort but still want a couple more things.

aethelfleda · 05/10/2011 21:03

Hiya (am feeling better now- had a nap over lunchtime and Junior did the rhumba to reassure me!)

ty, the maclarens come in several styles- the Quest is only good from3 months but Maclaren Techno XT is suitable from birth (and more importantly has extendable handles, I'm tall so need em!) the version you saw with a carrycot is the Techno XLR- kind of the posh version, it's £50 more than the Xt but basicaly the same buggy with extra padding and a cosytoes (the carrycot itself costs extra on top)

Our maclaren Techno Xt from the DDs is on its last legs after 6 years of hard use, so I'm getting another one the same as it's been so good. Literally the only buggy you need, it's bombproof, folds up small As it's an umbrella fold (meaning it gets less wide when you fold it up, it fits in a skoda fabia/polo sized boot). Almost all the people I knew with travel systems were back to Mothercare 6 months later to buy a stroller!

Oh, and I've had my flu jab! It's the ladies in the third trimester who are at biggest risk if they get the flu (yep, that's us). I do think it's safe, and with two DDs as well I'd hate to get really sick. As others have said, up to each of us, but for me it was a very straightforward choice.
kri5ty, ring your doctor back about the flu jab- they were in individual doses when I got mine, so waiting for 20 people makes no sense. If they've got the stuff in they should be prioritising you as a pregnant woman. Tell em a random woman off the internet told you so.

OiMissus · 05/10/2011 21:13

seven you've almost done all your christmas shopping??!! I'm impresssed.
I haven't bought a thing yet. Yikes.

sevensevenseven · 05/10/2011 21:15

aethelfleda glad you're ok and baby has reassured you. I meant to ask how you were but after catching up on the 2 pages of today's posts I'd forgotten half of what I wanted to say.

If tomorrow is as busy as today we'll need another new thread. There's an abandoned one somewhere, I think 2 must have been started last time so we may as well go there.

sevensevenseven · 05/10/2011 21:19

oimissus I know how knackered I'll be next month! Anything we don't get done tomorrow we're finishing online.

figgygal · 05/10/2011 21:22

I've bought a baby jogger city mini I wanted something that would last have seen so many little ones in pushchairs they seem to be sitting on rather than in as they've outgrown them. This year u can get a carry cot to fit on with adaptors and maxi cosi car seats but already had been given 2 for each car so haven't bothered with it. They fold flat mine is hanging up on a coat hook in the porch and it fits in the top boot of my silly convertible where the roof folds into. Not saying carrycot looks particularly pretty fitted on there unlike like a proper system where the pushchair section can be removed but it'll def do the job and cot will be makeshift travel cot for first few months if away from home.

Have the dr at 7.10 tomorrow morning Sad the midwives need a gp to rule out non pregnancy reason for the agonising wrist pain before can refer to physio I'll have had the baby at this rate but thought had best do it. Not sure it is carpal tunnel after all don't have numbness or tingling just intense pain like I've trapped it in a car door.
