Kayano I woke up on my back this morning and decided not to get upset even though I've read this too. I've invested in a long pillow and haven't used it yet but will give it a try tonight. Its supposed to go under your tummy so that you are supported and it makes sleeping on your side more comfortable because you've something soft to sqash down on. You can buy these pillows in Argos and I've seen them in Mothercare too.
I've also read lying on your left is optimal but I cannot fall asleep on my left, always have to be on my right

littlemonkeybix · 14/09/2011 22:43

kayano I have big boy shoulders, and usually sleep on my front, so changing to sleeping on my side has been difficult!! I bought a long pillow (costco, miles cheaper than anywhere else!!) And it helped train me for a couple of weeks!!

Now I don't use the pillow, but I know I will once pip gets bigger!! It took about a forthnight to get used to side sleeping... And the left right thing doesn't really matter, but left is preferred. There was a study indicating a "possible link" to right side sleeping and troubles, but "the experts" were all saying it might indicate some further investigations, but nothing yet.

My advice, get yourself a long pillow to hug, rest your tummy on, and tuck between your legs to help train yourself for side sleeping, and if you've got room, use another pillow/cushion wedged in your back for support at the back, and the help you not roll.

One problem I've found is I'm still tossing and turning, which is a bit more laboured because of pillow manouvres, but I'm getting better!!

woowa · 14/09/2011 22:55

zhen - on nappies, you can use them from birth - the totsbots flexitots i have have a clever folding mechanism which makes them tiny! (They are a two stage nappy, so not birth to potty, you have to get a whole new set when they reach about 18lb). I use washable liners, i have 20 nappies and 20 liners, which does well for washing every 2 days. Iput them on her through the night til she was about 7 months, then i stopped, but i can't rememberwhy. She is now 18 months and gets through a nappy in about 3-4 hours, which is loads of time, so yes, they hold toddler wee (at the moment). The second stage flexitot ones come with a booster which i put in about 4 months ago, which is what gives the extra absorbency. Hope that wasn't too complicated!

mmm - someone else asked about the nappies. ARe they a faff? I think it depends on your life, what sort you get and what your drying facilities are. I don't work outside the home, so I have more daylight to do stuff. Flexitots can'tgo in the tumbledryer, but i do have a washing line, and a boiler cupboard for when it's raining, so drying isn't a problem. Some nappies can go in the dryer, so that's easiest. They are bulkier to carry round out of the house, but not heavy. The worse bit is getting rid of the poo down the look, especially when pregnant (don't need to do it with bf poo, just when it has food in it, as you don't want it in your washing machine!) but only because it makes me retch! I use (biodegradable Nature Babycare) nappies at night and on holiday as that makes it less of a faff.

one final thing, i love washable wipes! They are basically like little flannels, and you just keep a stackof them in water for bum washing. You will think babywipes are completely useless if you ever use the washable ones! So much easier.

more info here

I figure with sleeping, that people managed to survive ok before the sleeping on the left advice came in, so not to worry about it. I'm sort of on my sidefront left on a long pillow, until that gets boring and i turn to right and even on my back! As you get a bigger bump you'll sleep however you can because you'll be so desperate to sleep!

19 weeks, i think, night all!

QueenFee · 14/09/2011 22:56

I woke up on my back this morning and had the most bizarre experience. My bump had gone really hard amd small and looked like a rugby ball shape and I could see wriggling inside! I guess braxton hicks must start earlier with each pregnancy.

Bf and colic. I have bf 3 kids 1 had colic one had nothing and one cried all the time anyway! (it later turned out to be a problem with tge moulding of his head during birth. It was sorted by a cranial osteopath. I highly recommend them if you have a difficult birth or c section) I see lots of babies with my job and some just are colicy and some arn't. Interestingly sometimes in bf the colic goes after an adjustment in the latch.

Nappies. I used disposibles for dc 1 and 2 but switched to cloth for dc3 when he was 18 months! I used fitted bamboo nappies and wraps and never had issues with leaking. I am going to buy tinynippers for the baby. I have always used disposable liners. Tbh I don't find it any more work. I just put the poo down the loo then put them in a nappy bucket. When it's full I take the whole bagfull out and pop a wash on. When its dry I just chuck the lot back in my nappy box and start again.
If you are thinking of using reusables check your local councils website as they often offer money towards them. Here we get £75 over 18 months!

littlemonkeybix · 15/09/2011 01:52

Well, my middle of the night wee/drink needs have just solved a mystery for us!!! Huzzah!!!

We've had slugs in the kitchen for MONTHS Sad and we've sealed all the gaps, expanding foam and everything... I've just ventured in for a drink... And four of the buggers are on the floor!!! At lesast they weren't on the stainless steel cooker, cupboards or worktops this time!

Anyway, they were all pointing away from one place... They may aswell have had a little map for me!!! There's one floorboard where the end to end bit has the tiniest of gaps... But it is a gap!!

So now I know! I'm almost tempted to wake DP in my joy... He could also dispose of the salted goop I've left him Blush

Anyway, I'm extatic, as we can seal what is hopefully the final hole, and be slug free (and feel clean again) YAY

Sugar80 · 15/09/2011 07:35

I asked my midwife on Monday about the sleeping on your back thing, as I'm really struggling on my side. She said it's fine. When we get MASSIVE we may find it uncomfortable anyway, as baby will press down on (something) which could restrict the blood flow, making us feel woozy. But for now, as long as we feel okay we're fine.

littlemonkeybix · 15/09/2011 08:47

sugar isn't it a vein/artery from the legs. Hence the woozy... And it would increase clot chances I suppose.

melliebobs · 15/09/2011 09:00

monkey it's called the Superior Vena Cava. It carries deoxygenated blood from the upper half of the body back to the heart. But like someone else said, people still slept and survived before all this nonsense guidance came out!

Xavielli · 15/09/2011 09:42

I sleep flat on my tummy all the way through! Work that one out!

It's thursday which means the noisy two are at their dad's after school giving me a chance to get things done. I'm actually really excited about going through their clothes and getting rid of things; I think this may be the start of nesting!

19+1 and 1 week 6 days til scan wheeee!

phlossie · 15/09/2011 09:45

I find lying on my back uncomfortable already, but I don't think you need to worry if you do. If you think about it, midwives get you on your back for all appointments/scans/procedures and sometimes to give birth, so it can't be that awful!

I bf both my babies. They were both really windy. My DH mastered a special walk for getting burps out! But like Zhen I just sat them on my knee and rubbed their backs with their chins in my hand - and a muslin for dd because she was a puker. DD had colic. It was horrible. We saw a chiropractor with her, which did help, as she was born very quickly and was very battered by the experience.

Thanks for reusable advice, woowa. I'm planning on getting to grips with them this time round! The reusable wips sound good too.

Very please about your slugs littlemonkeybix! We get them too. They're nasty.

littlemonkeybix · 15/09/2011 11:24

OK... so right now, I am fit for bursting... in a bad way Angry

I have just had a text... A TEXT... off DP to say he doesnt want to go to any antenatal classes.

I said I needed him to go, for me...

"it's 6 hours of my life I'll never get back"

there's going to be a murder tonight.... a very bloody, frenzied murder....

AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

phlossie · 15/09/2011 11:32

Bloody nora! He's fathered your child, ffs! A text! No wonder you're Angry x7! My friend's DH didn't want to go - said he would only go if it didn't interfere with cricket. Obviously I think he should go, but maybe you could take the day to calm down and then try and find out why he doesn't want to. I don't know. Or you could just sock him one! I hear frying pans make good weapons...

BillComptonstrousers · 15/09/2011 11:41

Bloody hell monkey I'm fuming for you! I'm sure some people just open their mouth and things fall out without them thinking they might be upsetting someone!

It's lovely and sunny here in Durham here and I'm at work trying to resist looking at cute girls things online Grin

Just a few questions!

  1. Has anyone got anything they are using for constipation? NOTHING is working for me and I'm getting such awful pains I can't stand up some mornings.
  1. This last week I have been ravenous, like waking up in the middle of the night and I need something to eat! anyone else?
  1. Braxton hicks have started already
  1. Anyone not putting on any weight yet? I was 9st8 when I took the test went down to 9st with morning sickness, and now am only back up to 9st4 at 19 weeks.
  1. Is anyone having the odd glass of wine? I would love to have one but my partner really doesn't want me to. (my 3rd, his 1st)

bloody hell ladies we are nearly halfway there Grin

OP posts:
PamBeesly · 15/09/2011 12:10

Hi Bill

I don't know if you are avoiding caffeine but if you have the odd cup of coffee, I have found in the past it helps a lot with constipation. High fibre foods and lots of water helps, a big bowl of fruit and fibre and a pint of water for breakfast might do the trick.

I am also ALWAYS hungry, even when I'm eating I don't understand it. I was getting a BLT in a deli for my lunch yesterday and I asked the woman making the sandwich would she make it a double decker sandwich Blush I do not have any appetitie at all after about 6 or 7 p.m. (I don't get in from work until 8pm)

I'd say go and have a glass of wine, its your body Bill....I see your partners concerns alright, but the alcohol recommendations are just that recommendations, you are allowed 1-2 units a week anyway as far as I know, but it is your decision because its your body

Monkey how bloody lousy, and to send a text, I'm Angry for you too, I hope there are massive apologies from him later

littlemonkeybix · 15/09/2011 12:12

I responded... "you're unbelievable"... his response.... "unbelievably sexy"

I took the moral high ground and replied "f* off" Blush to which I got "see, you just can't leave me alone"

AngryAngryAngryAngry

so I did the adult thing.... and cried in the office!

He has a habit of speaking then thinking... but this is something else. So glad I have a day off tomorrow... unfortunately it's being spent with his neice (she's 28) Grin

he's a very private person, but I am hormonal and I need to chat to someone... it might just be her!

Im going for a walk for lunch with my pal (handily in HR!!) and I think the local chocolate shop may be being called in to!! yum!

littlemonkeybix · 15/09/2011 12:14

UPDATE

Just had a text.... "is there any cereal left"

I am not responding

tw*t

phlossie · 15/09/2011 12:16

Oh, Bill, you make me feel so much better! My answers below:

  1. I'm a bit 'loose' mostly, but swear by my morning bowl of all bran and lots of fruit, esp pears, dates and dried apricots.
  1. Yes, me! I eat all morning from the moment I wake up!
  1. Me too. Definitely tightenings, and I feel quite achey across the bottom of my tummy especially when I need to pee.
  1. Sadly, no, I am putting on weight, but I was worried that I wasn't putting on enough, or that it was only food.
  1. Not wine, but beer. Yes! Not much, mainly a good old gulp of DH's. I'm an ale fan.

I am building up anxiety levels at the moment. I have convinced myself that this baby is doomed for absolutely no reason other than a) I have two healthy children and have used up my luck and b) I know way more people who have had complications/losses than I did when I had DC1. I'm obsessed with the size of my bump, how many movements I've been feeling (very sporadic, but probably feeling something daily, though was it actually wind? A spasm?), and the contents of my knickers, which I frequently sniff because I think I'm losing water, which I am, but pee rather than amniotic fluid! Bloody hell, this is definitely my last baby - I couldn't cope with being any more mental!

PamBeesly · 15/09/2011 12:18

Oh monkey I'd be so livid with him, does he understand how upset his text made you, it doesn't sound like it if he is asking you about the cereal. Don't let him fob you and your feelings off as 'hormonal' because its just not true, I'd be crushed if he wouldn't go with me. Although you are the one going through the pregnancy its the both of you going through the journey together to parenthood. He should be there to support you and learn some valuable lessons himself.

claricestar · 15/09/2011 12:20

littlemonkeybix

my dp refused to go to antenatal classes with my first. he did go on the hospital tour grudgingly. It was full of couples holding hands and there was him sulking and wearing his ipod! However, when it came to the birth and aftermath he was an absolute rock, and was for the second birth too. This time round he's showing his enthusiasm by tracking the pregnancy on an iphone app. he's the main child carer in our household and is great at it. so there is hope for your dp...

Potol · 15/09/2011 12:48

littlemonkeybix DH tried to suggest he wouldn't go for antenatal classes because he's a doctor and has seen plenty of births. I pointed out that his sperm wasn't involved in any of those. (Also I'm the only non medic in my family and the rest all think antenatal classes are hilarious, so I'm in a minority). Anyway, I then said that if he didn't come I'd be partnered with some random bloke (I know I was making it up), who would be practising the birthing stuff with me in fairly intimate positions. That changed DH's mind immediately. Although to be fair, I think he would have come along anyway. I'd be really really really furious if I got cheeky texts like that. Hope the chocolate helps.

Bill I had a look at myself in the mirror at work and realised that I'd lost a ton of weight. Something even my colleagues have pointed out. And I've had zero MS and I've been eating a LOT. I then began to panic a bit but will have to put panic on hold till my scan next week. I don't care that much about my weight as long as the LO is fine. For constipation: Are you taking iron tablets btw? Mine gave me terrible constipation and my doctor told me to stop taking them.

phlossie · 15/09/2011 13:00

potol that's hilarious! You should try that argument, littlemonkeybix!

Also, potol I am trying to have the same attitude: no panic, have scan next week... I'm just spending too much time on my own today, and I should be doing any number of jobs, but instead I'm playing on MN and bidding for things on ebay!

melliebobs · 15/09/2011 13:22

bill I had a shot sized glass of wine last week. I felt very naughty for some reason. Dh has let me have lager shandies 1 night a week (usually a Sunday when I've cooked something good) but that's not been every week. We have agreed that I am allowed a proper glass of wine when I go out for my bday in a couple of weeks, with my Xmas dinner and I'm allowed a gluhwine when we go to the Manchester Xmas markets. Can't wait! Although as without a hot orange and amaretto is going to be tough! That taste IS Xmas!

monkey if dh has said that to me I'd be bloomin livid. Idve finished work for the day and been round at his office. Not productive but I'm hot headed. Just like everyone else has said use the rest of the day to calm down n spoil yourself and have a good sit down with him tonight. There's got to be more to it than just being '6 hours he'll never get back' Smile

BillComptonstrousers · 15/09/2011 13:24

Hahaha phlossie you will now be known forever in my mind as 'Phlossie the knicker sniffer'!

And monkey I know you're angry, but that 'unbelievebly sexy' comment from your DH really made me laugh Blush

I'm not taking any iron tablets, eating fruit and fibre every day, drinking at least 2 litres of water, eating at least 3 portions of fruit. You would think I would be shitting through the eye of a needle, but no, I'm rewarded with a poo that a rabbit would be ashamed of, about once a week.

OP posts:
littlemonkeybix · 15/09/2011 13:28

Bill any other day, I'm with you. Me and DP have an incredibly similar sense of humour and send ridiculous messages all day long, but today I am on the rampage.... his humour fell MORE than short. Feel free to chuckle though Smile ... any other day I would!!

Potol excellent excuse.... that may be pulled out of the bag tonight when we argue scream fight talk about things

Back to PG issues... I am a bit bunged... and the only thing working for me, is scoffing fruit and veg by the bucket full. I miss a portion or two... BUNG

InnocentRedhead · 15/09/2011 13:51
  1. Has anyone got anything they are using for constipation? NOTHING is working for me and I'm getting such awful pains I can't stand up some mornings. I don't have constipation (gone from once every four days pre-PG normal for me - to once every two days) suits me fine :)
  1. This last week I have been ravenous, like waking up in the middle of the night and I need something to eat! anyone else? Ravenous all the bloody time! - but only for really healthy stuff and sweeties
  1. Braxton hicks have started already Know that one and thought i was alone
  1. Anyone not putting on any weight yet? I was 9st8 when I took the test went down to 9st with morning sickness, and now am only back up to 9st4 at 19 weeks. I have put on around 1kg, only just recently too, lost it at the beginning - even with no MS
  1. Is anyone having the odd glass of wine? I would love to have one but my partner really doesn't want me to. (my 3rd, his 1st) Yeah, I am having the odd cheeky drink, no more than 3 small drinks a week; probably a little more than guidelines but I have had a lot of stress recently and I figure that it is healthier for LO rather than having a stressed all the time mummy

On the back of everything else too that people have seen - this morning I have being and put a deposit down for a new place - moving back out of my parents finally - god how I have missed my freedom - luckily we worked out we can afford it! (BECAUSE... I spoke to my manager this morning and she is fixing my hours to 24 a week!!!!!!))) However in the 15 mins I was gone from my car to pay the deposit; I was issued with an £80 parking ticket. Perfect grounds for appeal and not paying though, so they cannot uphold the fine thank god! BECAUSE... I spoke to my manager and she is fixing my hours to 24 a week!!!!!!

One bloody stressful thing on top of another! And my Save the Date cards for the impending wedding go out at end of this month too! 24/7/12 - buy your hats ladies!

As you can see a much better mood today :)

What a twat monkey, not just for not coming to the classes; but the attitude afterwards! Shocking! I can be your alibi if you need one lol!
