Ha! I made it to the next thread.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Dynababy · 26/07/2011 18:32

You cheered me up with all the leaking, sweeping, peeing chat! I'm not alone!!

Nickel IMO NCT classes were good and worth it to meet some people locally that'll be off same time as you but in no way essential ... I already knew everything they said from MN!!

So er still here! 40 & 6 now, Star hope the sweep works for you or if not that the induction goes well, very Envy you know you'll have a baby by the weekend!

My plan for tonight is to go back to our roots put in some serious amount of JS'ing in an attempt to evict our mini!!! Might be a bit tricky with mahoosive bump but its happening anyway! Grin

Eskarina · 26/07/2011 21:34

I know it's a well known strategy for inducing labour but the thing I feel like least is a bit of JS! Can't imagine I'll suddenly find my mojo in 3 weeks time. I'd rather like Squig to come early too so maybe I should be putting some more effort in to seducing DH.

Star hope everything goes well with sweep/induction.

I've been washing the nb clothes today - we have had so many given (all 2nd hand) I've not even got the 0-3 month ones out of the loft yet.
Should I be feeling guilty that I haven't spent anything on clothes for the first 6 months?

KateeTheBump · 27/07/2011 09:03

Nope! Apart from a few from sainsburys and the ones we bought in France, the majority of ours are second hand. To be honest the new ones are a bit of a rip off and they hardly get worn, so don't feel guilty - just think of all that recycling you're doing and get a warm rosy glow Grin

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 11:05

The thought of sex right now.....Hmm

Well done on the clothes haul esk - we were very lucky with people's generousity too but no newborn clothes! Hit up Asda and the M&P sale!

Eskarina · 27/07/2011 11:51

I'm having a crisis over names - as in we haven't chosen any yet. I really don't want to be deciding in the delivery room and I'm definitely not of the "we'll wait and see what they look like" school of thought (it looks like a baby!) Problem is I can't get DH to see it as a priority. It's not that he doesn't want to do it, but the conversation keeps getting shuffled off the list of things to do.
I'm now looking at every baby name website I can find and have a selection of names I like, although we have quite different tastes, and of course he's at work so I can't run any past him.
Gah.

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 11:57

Make a list and discuss it tonight/email it to him? We did our organically...in that we would watch a film and yes or no all the names in the credits, I vetoed anyting in the top 20 baby names lists (and then ended up with one from there any way Grin), we'd hear someone's name and sort of go "oh, OK" to each other. That way it never felt like the massive burden/hurdle/task it actually is - I realise time is ticking but you could still do it this way?

DH actually asked me the other day if I still like Teddy (as in the name, not the unborn child....) I cannot imagine him being anything other than this now although am really hoping he 'looks' like a Teddy when he is born - I know, I know, they do all look the same!!

nickelbabe · 27/07/2011 12:30

hand it over to MN jury, esk Grin

you know you want to....

back from the scan.
It went very well, all is in order and measurements were normal.

couple of minor grievances.
the price of photos has gone up to £7 for 2, but last time, we were given 7 in total, which you could tell were just different magnifications of the same 2 pictures.
this time we got 3 pritns, with 2 of them being closeups of the first one. so I'm not happy about that Hmm

second was, when the scanning man said that he was going to do the fanjo scan, I said that I didn't want it (i had been stressing over having to say no anyway), and he paused and looked rather taken aback that i didn't want it.
he then went on to start to explain about it, to which I interrupted him and said that my midwife told I could refuse any procedure, and that I didn't want this one.
then he said "to be honest there's no risk to the mother, or to the baby if you have it done" I repeated no, that's fine, and it was left at that.

then he started to mumble a bit and said that he had to get a colleague to double check his measurements etc, ushered us out of the room to start the next patient and we sat around in the corridor not sure what was going on Confused

the lady appeared (after 20 minutes!) and took us into another room, where on went the squirty goo again, and she quickly checked everythign and that was it.

we didn't find out the sex - the lady on reception told us to tell him as soon as we got in there, so we did, and he was okay with that.

aStarInStrangeways · 27/07/2011 12:43

Why the fuck would an up-the-chuff scan be considered standard at 20 weeks? Shock Hmm I think that's outrageous, personally, and would have done just the same as you had anyone dared to suggest it with either of mine.

nickelbabe · 27/07/2011 12:46

exactly - that's what I think!

they did it at the 13 week one, too, and I didn't know I was allowed to refuse, but it bloody took me by surprise, i can tell you! Shock

I texted my mum to tell her about the scan, and mentioned it, and about 10 minutes later, big sis texted asking me why they wanted to do one!
in Nottingham, it appears, they only offer one if there's a problem - ie big sis didn't have one at all, nor was she offered one, and little sis was offered one (and had one) at 20 weeks with her 3rd, because her first was 12 weeks prem and her 2nd was 6 weeks prem.
I think she was worried there was a problem, and she said she didn't know what one was!

KateeTheBump · 27/07/2011 13:08

Well no-one mentioned in to me, in any of my 3 Nottingham scans! (well, it was a possibility with first at 9 weeks, but only if they couldn't see anything with through my belly, and they could fine). I wonder if its worth complaining to the hospital as dildo cam is a) not necessary and b) probably shouldn't be insisted on by a bloke!! Hmm

Glad all ok though. Our 20 week photos were free, thank goodness, cos they are the worst scan photos in history - a fuzzy blur!

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 13:49

Ummm, re: dildocam, it is to measure the cervix. I was told this was particularly important at 20 weeks as it could give you warning of an imcompetent (too short) cervix which they could help by stitching if required at this point. I am not the best person to give objective opinions on the dildocam as after the IVF it was so second nature I didn't bat an eyelid. In fact scanning through my abdomen was more of a Shock to me by that stage!

Glad everything checked out fine! Nice to hear you have gone for a surprise on the gender! Every now and again I wish we had, but I can imagine I would be climbing the walls if I hadn't Grin

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 13:50

Oh re: photos. We had fab ones from our 12 week scan. About 12 all really different (and all for the 3 for £3 price). The 20 week ones were utter shite. Crap quality, and like you, 2 seemed to be a close up of the first.

KateeTheBump · 27/07/2011 13:58

Can they not do that from the abdomen then? Mine said that the OS was normal or something, which is something to do with the cervix I think. On googling it looks as though its generally only offered if you previously had a late miscarriage or preterm birth, so I wonder if its related to the IVF in some way Val? Actually, on second googling I spotted another forum mentioning it Nickel (babyandbump) and one woman from Kent said they'd done it there, so it might be standard practice in your PCT!

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 14:00

No idea katee Grin and nope, not due to the IVF, just standard at my (and it seems like Nickel's!) hospital! I find it utterly bizarre that 'standard' procedures vary on things like this across the country

nickelbabe · 27/07/2011 14:08

vallinna - yes, it is to measure the length of the cervix, but they did that at the 13 week scan (see before cos I didn't know i could refuse then) and it was perfectly fine. I can't imagine what would make it change in 9 weeks, and if there is a chance it could, surely it would make more sense to offer it at 22 weeks instead of 13, not as well as ?
Confused

nickelbabe · 27/07/2011 14:09

glad i'm not the only one to feel ripped off about photos then :)

Eskarina · 27/07/2011 14:37

Our photos were £6 each Shock Shock so all yours sound cheap to me!

KateeTheBump · 27/07/2011 14:46

Just a curious thing, those of you who paid for photos, did you get them on proper photo paper? Mine seem to be printed on shiny bog roll, which is I presume why they were free? Grin

nickelbabe · 27/07/2011 15:08

yes, it is like shiny bog roll!
like the old fax rolls were Grin

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 15:21

Shiny bog roll at 20 weeks, matt bog roll at 13 weeks!

Oh and we didn't 'pay'....we made a compulsory 'donation' of a suggested £3 to the hospital charity.

nickelbabe · 27/07/2011 17:02

just looking at a page about scans, and came across this:

www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/scans/safety/

"One study found a slight increase in left-handedness in boys, but this hasn't been backed up by other studies (Salvesen 2002). "

makes it sound like being a left-handed boy is a Bad Thing! Grin

vallinnapod · 27/07/2011 18:37

My Dad's a left handed boy and he rocks Grin

Baby2b · 27/07/2011 19:39

nickel the dildo cam is recommended before 12 weeks as it gives the clearest picture. I am guessing it was just the machine that was available.

Had my scan today too. Placenta has moved enough to not be a worry and little one is head down (though not engaged). Nearly peed myself laughing as the lady said, 'oh, it clearly is a boy'. Everything was massive on the screen anyway and suddenly the babies testicles appeared. Dh squints and says how can you tell? Grin

takethatlady · 27/07/2011 20:38

Hello ladies. I'm here having just survived a volcanic eruption of partly-digested breastmilk which went straight into my mouth as I said 'wow' to DD and hit the back of my throat. EEEEEEEEUUUURGGGGH.

On the plus side we took her to see Harry Potter at the cinema today - they do weekly screenings for parents and under 1s at the Picturehouse in Cambridge. It was very cool, and you could actually hear the film above the babies quite easily. Will definitely do it again.

Grin don't worry val, they don't all look the same once you have one of your own. In fact, all other babies look positively weird to me now, like little aliens posturing as babies Grin

Sorry about your scan nickel but the main thing is you're half way through, your LO is all present and correct, and you stood your ground with the stupid scan man. Congratulations!

Grin baby2b. You'd think your DH would recognise a testicle when he sees one Grin

Baby2b · 27/07/2011 22:23

Envy to be baby vomit (sick not envyGrin)

Forgot to say, realised I got given a free picture. No idea what it is showing though? Can't make anything out. Might upload it for you guys to have a guess at Grin
