supadupapupascupa · 19/07/2011 20:40

i was told they don't bother looking for the heart beat at all here anymore :( Gutted because with DS I used to love to hear it....

My 16wk appointment is next week, it shouldv been tommrrow but had to reschedule. Last pregnancy I heard HB at 16wks. Hope you get a chance to hear it tommorrow.

Congrats on all the positive results that everyone has been getting! Keep up the good work ladies! Smile

We(as in ME) were careful when buying for Dd so that things were unisex and could be used for future siblings. The only major thing we need to buy this time is a cot. Dd is using the Bed part of her cotbed and her room is pretty small so it would be a squish &n a squeeze to have a cotbed and a big bed in the room thanks to the built-in cupboards. Planning on moving into a bigger place in the next year or so.
I did however find a big bag of baby clothes in the cupboard the other day which is a bonus.

I have 2 pet hates just now, skip past if you want:
Family members that are too miserable to embrace the joy and happiness that a precious new baby in the fmaily brings. Imho if they cant celebrate the miracle that is a baby and iintend on making it a negative situation for everyone then they dont deserve to be part of that little miracles life.
Secondly: Peope that are ungrateful lthat they are pregnant and they are all healthy. Too many people struggle to get pregnant or just simply cannot concieve and then you get people on FB annoucing that if this baby is a girl then its going to ruin her holiday. FFS get a grip! I also heard recently of lady of had 2 failed IVF attempts, fell pregnant on the 3rd. She made a HUGE deal for most of the pregnancy that she was disappointed that she was having a girl and not a boy. She was even overheard telling strangers on the underground that she disappointed.
Why cant some people just be happy that they are pregnant and that the baby is healthy? Live is too short!

Rant over, thank you for reading.
Im away for a Brew and a mint Areo

Wormshuffler · 19/07/2011 21:22

It's 3 weeks here for the combined nuchal and blood results.....I will be 16 weeks!

I know what they mean about the heartbeat thing early on, I have hired a doppler, and have only managed to hear it once. I do here baby crashing about in there though sounds like he/she is having a right rave up in there!

Oeisha · 19/07/2011 21:27

Pee pot?! I wasn't given a pee pot! :S
Mind you, I never have problems peeing...so am quite sure I can provide a sample on request.

Conchita · 19/07/2011 21:47

I didn't get one til I arrived Oeisha so don't panic.
Had my 16-week today, heard the baby's heartbeat. Took a while to find it but there it was!

emmyjj · 20/07/2011 06:48

I also got to listen to the heartbeat too, think it must be routine here as after we had talked through my blood test results (all good, though discovered I am rhesus negative so will need an anti-D jab at 28 weeks and poss after the birth) she asked me to hop on the bed for a feel of my tummy and a listen in. Would have def asked if it hadn't been offered!

I've also got a home doppler, and have been able to find a heartbeat from about 10 weeks, but it can take a few minutes to track it down. The one the midwife used was super sensitive and she was able to pick out the sound of the placenta (sort of a swooshing, rushing sound), the babies circulation (which is basically the pulse) and the actual heartbeat, which sounds super fast like a galloping horse, where you can here both the in and out beats of the heart, if you know what i mean. It was amazing to hear and really interesting, as now i know sometimes i'm picking up the circulation and sometimes the heatbeat with my home doppler, which is why it can sound a bit different on different days. The home doppler is great so long as you can resist the urge to listen too often, i try for once a week and then sometimes listen again if a friend or relative is over and wants a listen (or, prob more accurately, humours me by having a listen! Smile )

When feeling my tummy, she confirmed the womb had risen up from the pelvis and into the abdomen. Not that i really needed official confirmation of that judging by the fact now none of my trousers do up. Not even close! Wink

One thing i did forget to ask about was the nhs antenatal classes, and how to sign up for them. I've registered for NCT, but does anyone know about how to get sorted for the nhs ones?

lippyhippy · 20/07/2011 08:11

not sure about nhs ones, i guess your midwife gives you details? when's everyone going to start going to things like that? i keep forgetting about it!

also anyone else worried about travelling this summer? i have work in latvia and a wedding in hungary, both of which were past my 14wks so i thought I'd be over the sickness, but now i'm 13wks and no sign of it slowing up Sad worried I'm going to be sick on the plane and at work and not enjoy the wedding which cost us hundreds of pounds to go.......and my dh didn't want to go anyway...... Sad

LisaKayMacca · 20/07/2011 08:54

Morning all,

I'm 15 weeks tomo, and was so lucky that my morning sickness passed by week 12, as one week I lost 1/2 a stone through sickness. Unfortunately now I am on antibiotics for a UTI and am having bad side affects so sickness is back just when I was getting my appetite back :(

I've also got a home Doppler, tried it for the 1st time last night. Took a while but was such a lovely feeling sitting at home and hearing babies heart beating.

I really didn't want to order anything until I was at least 25 weeks but due to the sales we have ended up ordering, pushchair, car seat, baby bay, and bottles....we did end up saving about 200 pounds though.

Anyone on hear from Essex?

x

debs39 · 20/07/2011 08:56

ooooo emmyjj where did you get the doppler from and what type is it and is it easy to use????? Am in a constant panic about this baby still being ok and know that hearing hb would settle me...was just a bit scared that the doppler I got was hard to use and cldn't find HB so scared myself even mre, that's all!!!! : )

abeautifulbutterfly · 20/07/2011 09:21

I have just been given a whole load of big-calibre baby stuff by my DH's brother. I really didn't want it in the house yet, like you say, it feels like tempting fate, esp. after a MC, but they are doing some work on their flat and really needed it out of the way and so I had to go and pick it up yesterday. They've given us a pram, stroller-type buggy, first car seat, baby carrier (a pouch-type thing) and a baby gym, which will save us sooo much money, so I have to be grateful. A cot-cum-cot-bed we still have, so really that's all the big stuff out of the way and I can fritter all my money away on baby clothes. I really want to learn to use baby wraps/slings this time, especially with 2 schoolgirls to walk to school every morning - need both my hands free!

I've been thinking a lot about the whole ungrateful pg women thing, shonno, and it seems to me that until anything happens to you, you don't even think about it. In my first2 pregnancies it was like "Oh great, I'm pregnant, baby will be born in X month" and so on - a given, so to speak, and you do start nitpicking (I was gutted I had a late autumn baby rather than the spring baby I'd always wanted...). It wasn't until I had the MC that I began to realise that pg does not always = baby, and this pg I am constantly worrying and just willing things to be OK - girl, boy, big, small, January birth - whatever, just let me carry it to term and it be healthy. Then again, there will always be the pathological mum types (I knew one who gave birth and abandoned the baby in hospital "just until after the Christmas party season" she said when they came looking for her... ShockSad)

lippyhippy · 20/07/2011 09:27

lisakay I'm from essex! Grin grew up in brentwood, but now i live in london. what about you?

LisaKayMacca · 20/07/2011 09:35

lippyhippy I grew up in Hornchurch, but now have moved to Purfleet. I having my baby at Basildon as thats the closest hospital for me.

addictediam · 20/07/2011 09:53

I haven't finished reading this page so sorry if I'm repetiting what some one else has said. I just wanted to pick up on what shanomonom whilst i agree in part with your pet hate 2 I just wanted to tell you my expierience of being pg with dd.

After being told I couldn't carry a child, and I would always mc, I fell pg by accident with dd. I was due to have an operation to sort things out and to find out the exact reason I couldn't carry. When I phoned to cancel my op my gyne said when you have a mc come back to me. That phrase was repeted several times during the pg. I had a serious case of prenatal depression, but I kept quiet and didn't tell anyone how I was feeling. I was scared that my baby would be taken away from me. By 12wk I wanted an abortion, by 20wk I was a mess. I really and truly couldn't cope. I was in and out of hospital as I. had alot of problems with the pg which just didn't help.

Now and tbh then I felt so embarrassed and ashamed about the way I was feeling, but I know now that i was ill and needed help. Dd was a desperately wanted baby, but you wouldn't have known that by the way I was acting.

Just be sure that thoes women you mentioned aren't crying for help. And I also urge any of you feeling the same way I did with dd to talk to your dp and the dr.

Fryn · 20/07/2011 12:04

Nanny01 - I'm sorry to hear that your family are negative. I think it's wonderful to have such a large family, so I hope that they surprise you.

Fryn · 20/07/2011 12:30

Oops - was only at the bottom of the previous page and thought I was up to date!
abeautifulbutterfly - that's a result! My SIL's just offloaded a pile of maternity wear onto me, which is great, and without being toooooo obvious I've been eyeing up some of her DC's stuff which he should have grown out of by the time this one arrives!

addictediam - how awful. I just can't imagine how you must have felt, and given that the seeds of those feelings were created by people who should have been helping makes it so much worse. I hope this PG is a happier experience for you.

addictediam · 20/07/2011 12:50

Oh it is! I've got drs saying the same things but this time I have my gorgeous dd reminding me that drs don't always know what they're talking about.

falabalamb · 20/07/2011 14:50

Had my 20 week scan date through so just updating with it. Hope everyone is doing well. I just can't seem to shake off this exhaustion!

I am always wary of doctors due to my weight which never effected my last pregnancy's other than them stressing me out. My 16 week check up was Monday and saw my lovely midwife again. Things have changed even since I had my last child, so not surprised in the differences in care across the uk or the world.

Mum2be79 · 20/07/2011 17:52

Went to my 16-week appointment this morning. All is well. Baby's HB was 154-161 BPM. I too am B- so will need anti-D at my 28-week. Midwife pleased though. I need to stop eating Kelloggs Start before my urine test though!!!

GiraffeAHolic · 20/07/2011 19:38

Does anyone know how much blood loss is considered 'too much' in labour? My midwife wants to see my labour notes from dd before we decide on a home birth (have moved, so in different hospital area now) according to my notes I lost 1.2 litres and I remember there being quite a fuss (and mess) at the time.

Is this likely to be considered a risk factor for future labours do you reckon and put my home birth plans at risk?

emmyjj · 20/07/2011 20:00

Lisa and lippy- I'm live in Essex! I'm from London originally, but now live with partner on his family farm (he's a farmer) near Halstead in north essex.

debs I've rented a "hi bebe" doppler from this company www.hi-baby.co.uk/acatalog/Hire_a_Doppler_.html .

Great service, arrived next day delivery via Royal Mail and came with a big bottle of gel to use with the machine. Really easy to use, you just wack on some of the gel, and then put the probe to your tum and move it around the general womb area until you pick up the hb! I tried it as soon as it arrived and got nothing, tried again 5 days later at just over 9 weeks and could hear a tiny galloping horse in my tummy! DP was on a stag do but rang him up and made him listen over the phone, and then took it to my parent's house the next day for them to have a listen!

I am a bit of a skinny minny and i have heard that if you are a bit curvier it can be more difficult to hear, as the sound has to travel through a bit more padding if you see what i mean! Reckon most people would get a good result by 16 weeks though.

I've been using it once a week on average, and have so far found a heartbeat every time. The trick is to scan very low down, as even at this stage (I'm 16+3) the baby is still quite low, even though the womb has pushed up into the pelvis. In the early days i would often pick up my own heartbeat/pulse first, but when you first find the baby it's obvious as it's so much faster! You can also hear the "whoosh" of the placenta.

I had a scare at 7 weeks with a bleed, and have found the doppler incredibly reassuring while i wait for my 20 weeks scan. Having said that, I'm really strict with myself on how often i use it as it could get a bit much if you let it, checking all the time etc! I have had a couple of moments of panic where I've rushed for it, and it is a comfort.

addictediam what a traumatic time you've had, so glad you came through it and are busy seeing your next dc safely into the world.

shonno know exactly what you mean with your pet hates. I'm amazed by peoples reaction when i tell them that we are not finding out the sex of the baby - I've always felt strongly that a healthy baby is all i'm after, especially after my scare early in the pg, yet people seem to take it as a given that all will be well and that i should be eager to find out if we've got a pink or a blue one! As long as the baby is safe that is all I'm concerned with.

Great to hear some of you are starting to gather stuff for the babies, like you abeautifulbutterfly we've been offered a travel system an a few other bits from close relatives, which will help enormously. My mum is desperate to go shopping for stuff, but i won't let her buy anyting until at least after the 20 week scan. We're moving house in August so i also want to hold off until we're in the new house before i bring any baby stuff home, or else i'll end up moving it twice! Might have a little browse over the next few weeks though, those sales will be tempting!

Spagbolagain · 20/07/2011 20:37

Hi giraffe I had this conversation with my midwife and then with my obstetrician. I had a PPH with DS and thought it would rule me out for homebirth. They said as long as there were no complications with this PG, there is no reason I shouldn't deliver at home.

With DS I had a very long (4day) first stage, followed by augmentation, a distressed baby and forceps. So it's likely that that caused the PPH, and nobody in that situation would still be at home! So I think if there were reasons for the bleed last time, then there's no reason this one would be a risk. I guess it might be different if not and it was just spontaneous.
My midwife did also say that even had I been at home they would have done the same stuff (applying pressure). You'd get packed off for a transfusion if needed though.

shonnomanom · 20/07/2011 21:37

Congrats on all the healthy heartbeats ladies. Im very Envy that I wont get to hear 'booby' until wednesday next week.

emmy Your MW should provide all the info on the classes for you. Last pg I had to ask for them but this time I was given the details at the booking appointment. Suppose every MW is different. Here we need to book our own seat at the classes. Although I dont think I will go this time. My EDD is 01Jan and classes here start in October.

lisakay hope your starting to feel better and well done on saving so much money in the sales!

butterfly thats great that you secured so much gear for baby.
My haw dropped when I read about the lady leaving the baby at the hospital for the party season Shock

addicted Thank you for sharing your story with us. That must have a horrible time for you. Stay strong, you know just how what your body and and babies are capible of even if the doctors dont.
I know both ladies I spoke of. One is family. Im about 90% sure that their biggest concern in pregnancy is gender. Unfortunately the troubles in pregnancy seem to be another of those taboo subjects that everyone knows about but are very rarely are spoken of in public.
I agree with emmy that the safety of the baby is far more important than if its boy or girl.

girrafe I lost 2+pints with dd and was put on a drip not a transfusion immediatley after the birth. Dont know what was in the drip as I passed out with exhaustion after having a cuddle with my baby. If you lost lots of blood last time then it may be a risk factor when considering a home birth depending on what caused it. I think in my case the reason for so much blood was due to the speed of the pushing part(15mins in total) of the labour as there were no issues in pregnancy and earlier in the labour.
Your MW should be able to advise you better when she has your notes.

Bellakins · 20/07/2011 21:55

Evening all, I had my midwife appointment today and never thought to ask if I could hear the heartbeat! I even saw a zip bag on the table with the word 'Doppler' on it, what a wasted opportunity as there was quite clearly one there ready and waiting!!

Apart from that, all well with blood test results etc. Nausea still very much present and starting to doubt whether I'll ever feel normal again which I know is ridiculous but can't help it!

To whoever asked about the results of the nuchal scan, mine said it would take 2 weeks and it arrived while I was away on holiday which was quicker than expected. Mine was a 1 in almost 10,000 chance so very low.
