Hi everyone,

very sorry to hear Chocolate's news. this first few months is so tricky.

I'm between 8 and 9 weeks pregant but don't have my first midwife appt until July 11th! The joys of living in the stix and limited staff.... I was feeling very relaxed about it until this morning when all of my symptoms seemed to have stopped overnight. I was feeling horribly sick yesterday and had been for a few weeks and then today I'm fine! i should be pleased but I'm not... I'm tempted to pay for an early scan but I can't get one until a week on Fri. Should I just forget about it and wait until my appt with the midwife? Roll on week 12.

melliebobs · 21/06/2011 11:36

innocent i think i know of the book you speak of and it's very good. As part of my job i used to do a session at my local health centre and the room is the midwives room. There isn't a leaflet or peice of information in that room i have not read!

Needle · 21/06/2011 11:52

Oops, that's "Your Pregnancy Bible" not my. It's by Dr Anne Deans, and is really good. avoid "what to expect when you're expecting". Everytime I know who read it said it traumatised them!

melliebobs · 21/06/2011 11:54

does anyone recommend any books?! i've got the what to expect when your expecting app and the babycentre app. They are good as i have something new to read each day and they were free!

mistressploppy · 21/06/2011 12:24

Hi everyone

Welcome hermione, glad you decided to join us! Why lurk when you can chat incessantly talk?

I have 'What to expect' and it was ok I suppose. I got most info from the babycentre website. The US version (babycenter) has cute descriptions of what size fruit the foetus is each week! Kumquat, lime, melon etc. Quite liked that....

Man, I am tired today. No reason apart from being pg. Zzzzzzzzzzz....

gonerogue · 21/06/2011 12:34

Hello everyone - wonder will we get anyone who is due on the 29th? That would be cool.

I had such a lovely lie in today - DH is off on 2 week hols, so he got up with DD and then brought her to creche for her 2nd morning of "practising". I then lay in until half ten, got up had a shower which didn't involve singing ba ba black sheep once and then pootled around until I had to collect her at 12.

She seems to love the creche - apparently she didn't even register DH going this morning and when I came back to collect her I got a "Hi" and then she was back playing with the toys. The staff there are great and they have all been there for 5 years plus so there is very little change which is one of the reasons I wanted to put her there so she would have some continuity of care.

Tired still I think I may have overdonw it at the weekend - stayed up to collect my parents on Saturday night, then on Sunday to watch Rory McIlroy win the US opne so early to bed for me tonight methinks. Grin

Off to docs at 3 - I'll probably have the same experience as you have all had.

MissRed I hope things go ok for you and will be thinking of you for the next week or so.

melliebobs I second "Your Pregnancy Bible" it's great. If you want a laugh you can get the Mumsnet guide to pregnancy - it's informative but has lots of excerpts from the site which are hilarious, and you find yourself nodding along to . DH got it fo rme with DD -to show he pays attention to what I do. Grin

puzzletree · 21/06/2011 13:00

InnocentRedhead I'm in W Yorks too, Leeds. Didn't get any good freebies from the midwife though! I think they only give you the pregnancy book if it's your first or if you had previous children a while ago. I didn't get one anyway.
Another way to get freebies is to join all the store baby clubs e.g Boots, Tesco, Toys r Us. They send you loads of vouchers for stuff. In fact I might go check Boots now... Also if you buy a pregnancy/baby magazine they usually have loads of offers and competitions.
I had a few pregnancy books, best was 'your pregnancy bible' I liked the pictures. But I think I spent most time looking at name books!

LolaRennt · 21/06/2011 13:18

Just seconding the baby center emails. They come weekly and let you know how far along you are with various obscure fruit. I spent all 9 months in asda manhandling the fruit and thinking oh so thats what a "NewZealand wooly nuttted nectarine looks like"... Hmm

LolaRennt · 21/06/2011 13:24

Oh been researching and found out I may not get a 12 week scan! :( First scan in the states is normally between 18-20 weeks if a doctor reccomends it..... and that is usually the only one unless there is medical reason for it. Only 70% of women have any scan at all :(

Devastated here. How do they get through it I can't go 20 weeks with nothing I will actually lose the plot. I had 3 NHS scans last year (first at 7 weeks) and 2 private. Not sure we can afford private scans this year either. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

InnocentRedhead · 21/06/2011 13:26

puzzletree I'm Wakefield at the moment. Yeah i am actually signing up to all the sites as we speak :D Loving it.

I don't think i will be buying a pregnancy book, i feel that all the information anyone would need is available at our fingertips but that is my view. I suppose its great to have everything in one place though.

puzzletree · 21/06/2011 13:36

Lola gosh I'd been under the impression that you'd get more scans and tests in the states, probably because it seems more medicalised there. Am very surprised they don't do a 12 week scan- don't they offer the nuchal fold measurement and other antenatal tests? Is there anyway you could pay for a private scan, even if it's just a very basic one?

Innocent I was in Wakefield the other day, at the Hepworth Gallery, was lovely. Agree with you that we have access to so much info these days! I got books out of the library last time, they can be expensive. Might even sneakily go do that again, now that they have machines and I wouldn't have to share pregnancy news with random library staff.

QueenFee · 21/06/2011 13:40

Check out your local librart. They have most of these books and for free :)
I quite liked best friends guide to pregnancy.
A lovely read too is what mothers do always makes me feel important!

QueenFee · 21/06/2011 13:41

X posts puzzle :D

LolaRennt · 21/06/2011 13:49

I had assumed exactly the same puzzle! Hopefully we can put some money to the side, I will feel very bad for dc2 if they have one scan pic and dd has 5!

I think how many scans people have might also come down to what insurance will pay for and since it isn't a necesity I suppose they prefer not to pay for it? I really need to speak to a doctor soon to find out what I can expect as not insured.

This was on the USA babycenter
Because the NT scan requires special training and equipment, it's not yet available everywhere. But the test is being done more widely as more medical personnel get trained and certified. If you're interested, ask your healthcare practitioner or genetic counselor whether it's offered in your area.

LolaRennt · 21/06/2011 13:52

On the plus side I think the glucose test is standard

LolaRennt · 21/06/2011 14:00

Oh my god. they don't use gas and air It fell out of favour for epidurals... How does that even work. They are completely different. I want my gas and air!!!

woowa · 21/06/2011 15:43

oddeyes, thanks for the reassurance on post-pph delivery, feel more assured. i opted not to have the placenta jab last time (thanks for that helpful advice NCT Angry) which is possibly why the bleed. This time i'll be having two, and happy to have a drip - i think that means i won't be on the nice natural birth unit though, if a doc has to be present as they don't generally get let through the door Grin.

Had scan this morning, only one. There were two Sad but one stopped growing a few weeks ago. Well, we are sad, but know it'll be more straightfroward, so it's not all bad. And obviously thrilled about the one who stuck with us! Apparently there is a tiny tiny chance that the little egg sack remaining could affect the growing baby, but only really tiny. They'll rescan at 12 weeks to check all is well (last pg i had about 7 scans due to kidney issues, was sick of scans by the end!).

Right, going on holiday in 3 hours time and nothing is ready or packed. So, off to do that now. eek!

gonerogue · 21/06/2011 16:12

Feck had loads of post written and internet broke -

woowa have a great holiday*, glad you got your scan and yay for little bean who stuck. Sorry about the other - hope teh 12 weel scan goes ok.
Have a fab time on hols. Envy

Lola I had noticed that on OBEM USA the other night, people weren't asking for / getting G&A - that's rubbish.

Went to DR, my regular GP wasn't there, so the nurse did BP, urine test, took loads of blood, told me what not to eat, filled in loads of forms and I am due back to the doc for my GP checkup in two weeks. We get combined care if you go public here so I will have alternating Doc / hospital checkups every month.

InnocentRedhead · 21/06/2011 16:18

puzzle I went to the Hepworth on Saturday, I went with low expectations and was totally underwhelmed by Barbara Hepworth's work. However I did love most of the art and sculptures by everyone except Hepworth! Lovely day though. Library seems like a great idea too, I hadn't thought of it. I live in an area where I have grown up and the local librarians have known me for years and know everyone else, so I can't go get any from there until people know... Otherwise i will be subject of local gossip lol!

I can't believe what I am reading Lol RE: US healthcare for pregnant women. That is horrendous, I thought that 2 scans in the UK wasn't enough, but not even a NT scan?1 I would have thought that was important as part of all tests. I will be going private for a growth at 28weeks roughly and done private.

One thing, can you hire TENs machines for labour (if I have home birth) or do they have them in hospitals?

puzzletree · 21/06/2011 16:30

woowa sorry you lost a twin :( but glad you've got a happy little baby in there :) Enjoy your hols!

Lola no gas and air!!!! that was my drug of choice both times, would be lost without it, hope you get a good doctor who will be sympathetic to your preferences....

Innocent to be honest I didn't get a good look at everything in the gallery, generally don't with a 2yo and 4yo in tow, we need a few visits! but we loved some of the big pieces (managed to stop the boys running on that big carpet covered in shiny gloop!) and the kids craft areas, the windows overlooking the river and the footbridge, plus the playground was excellent! and the big wooden sculpture outside, 'black cloud' i think was great fun to run around in. we really love the Yorkshire sculpture park too. and the art gallery in Leeds. we're spoilt for modern art in Yorkshire :)

puzzletree · 21/06/2011 16:33

Oh re TENS machines, you might be able to hire them from your hospital, but there are loads of other places you can hire from too. I had one from an online company and they were very reasonable and prompt with delivery. Didn't really use it though!

InnocentRedhead · 21/06/2011 16:38

I haven't being to YSP in soooooo long, might have to pay a visit again soon. Yeah some of the big pieces were great!! And I have never being to Leeds Art Gallery, might have to pay a visit. Hopefully all of Wakefield is regenerated, it's my home town and I am sick of people calling it a shithole :(

Woowa, sorry about the twin :( but you still have a lot to look forward to! Hope you have a great holiday!

Can't stop reading everything that the midwife gave me! Can't believe it has happened.

How long was everyone trying for?

gonerogue · 21/06/2011 16:54

Innocent I was only trying for 2 months this time -as we had 18 month sof TTC before DD so we said we'd get on with it so as not to have a massive age gap. I was delighted to see the BFP though so early on.

I know there are loads of people on MN that have tried for years and then there were stories of secondary infertility esp after CS so I dodn't want to leave it too long.

hermionejgranger · 21/06/2011 16:55

Hey everyone - thanks for the advice - will be book buying this evening! And good tip about the shop baby clubs...

Had forgotten it's a leap year next year!

BestImitationOfMyself · 21/06/2011 18:26

Hi everyone, I've been lurking for 5 months, but looks like this is my bus, can I get on? Doesn't seem to be much space :)

I'm a first-timer and feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment, I think my due date is 28th Feb, but cycles have been all over the place since came off pill so not too sure. Went to Dr today and was a bit surprised by lack of... well anything! I was just told to take folic acid, given a phone number to call for a 12 week scan/ midwife appointment and no other contact before then. Have read a bit on the forums tonight and it seems that this varies a lot, depending on where you are... oh well, thank god for the internet! Great to know I'm not alone, what a busy month Feb seems to be!
