People have been known to do very strange things with placentas!!!!! im sure karma would agree. People eat them, suck them, bury them, use them as face masks (grossed out emoticon) cook them up for dinner parties,Keep them in the freezer the list is endless!!!!!!
But who am i to judge????
I mean its one neat bit of kit life support machine in one and there are lots of different sorts and you can tell a lot from them, but i still would NOT want to eat one.

I saw one prog on DH&H where the woman buried the placenta under a tree that they planted in honour of their new baby. They'd frozen it so that it would last until the ceremony, but forgot to defrost it, so put it in the microwave!!

I apparently had a 'special' placenta - it had an extra lobe or something. Made me feel very proud - lol!!!

I heard about one woman who did what u said and buried it and planted a nice rose bush lovely idea. However the local fox population thought it had one the lottery and she and dh were woke up at 3am by screeching and a garden full of about 25 foxses all running round her garden and fighting over who got to eat it!!!!!! needless to say the rose bush was trampled to death and the garden was trashed.

Hi everyone

Jenjam ? did you get your blood test results back for your suspected PE? I?m very impressed by all your hypnobirthing. As you know I am such a wuss myself I really admire anyone who can do this without DRUGS

Beksmums - congratulations again, you must be delighted with the short labour although it sounds very eventful! Did you manage to escape without any stitches? (go on make us all even more jealous). Your labour sounds exactly as Karma describes ? moving very fast after 4cm.

Bam ? how are your pains today? Feeling any better?

Beartime ? have you still got them as well? I asked the same question as you about the BH as I have never even had ONE in any pregnancy. Someone said it was down to how irritable your uterus was. Don?t know about the uterus but I am certainly very irritable ? shouted at DD tonight at the dinner table and she burst into tears bad mummy

Diege ? I believe that making an appointment to get your hair down is a sure fire way of inducing labour Ditto deciding to do any decorating (this means you Karma)

Cha-cha ? Happy Eid! ( how do you say it? Eid Mubarak? ) Maybe the excitement will start something. We had fireworks here last Sunday and I could feel the baby jumping with the noise

Twinkle ? your rosebush story is GROSSS!!!!!!

Today I had an ECV, which has succeeded in turning the baby cephalic so I am really pleased. Baby seems to be showing no ill effects so I?m just hoping that he stays head down. Unfortunately he?s got quite a long time to turn back as I?m only 37+2 and last time was very late so it could be another month. Though I assume it gets less likely as he gets bigger. Or if head is engaged?

Re size of baby ? got some new info from the consultant today. At the scan they told me baby was ?average size? . Which I took with a pinch of salt as they said that last time and he was 8 ½ lbs (big for me I am quite a small build). Consultant told me that all they do is measure the baby?s waist. So if you have long slim babies like me this really means nothing. They are actually checking to see that the baby isn?t growth restricted - they have no ideas about its head size and whether or not it will pass through your pelvis!! Hmmmmm

Busyalexsmummy · 03/11/2005 18:27

kristina-at my growth scan last fri they measured femur length, abdomen and head circumference+liquor volume
bit worrying though as belly and leg measurements were a few days behind whereas head measurement was over a week ahead a 38wks

Ah but what build is Alex? You see, DS1 was quite long when born ( i think about 54cm) he didnt fit teh newborn baby grows. He had big hands and feet and is still tall for age with short legs. He loosk slim build but weights A TON.

So i would expect to get big head short legs small waist on a scan IYSWIM

(forgot to say they did meausre fliud volume but it wasnt a growth scan, just for position)

Why are they doing a grwoth scan? Do they think baby is big? You dont have GD do you? Sorry is that Karma and Tessa? ( pregnancy brain)

Enthusia · 03/11/2005 18:42

Have you read the thread on Lotus births where they don't cut the cord on the placenta, instead they carry it around with the baby until it drops off naturally. They stitch special bags for it and salt and lavendar it daily. Weird!!!!

ChaCha - did the mw say why she thought you would go post term?

ChaCha · 03/11/2005 19:10

Kristina - How sweet of you! Yes, Eid Mubarak (Have a blessed Eid) is exactly what to say. Thank you We celebrate it tomorrow - our Hindu neighbours have just celebrated Diwali with lots of lights and fireworks and we are planning the same with lots of friends and families tomorrow evening. Should be fun, even if only for the kids.
Congrats on success of moving baby - you must be chuffed! Very, very happy for you

Enthusia - she just said that most first timers do and was going on what she had obviously experienced. Will take all said with a pinch of salt though! I am now thinking seriously about water birth..very much inclined, anyone else? (That's hoping that induction/complications do not happen)

see yall later xx

alfiesmum · 03/11/2005 19:11

Hello all,

I have just got home from hospital after giving birth yesterday morning. Baby boy 9lbs!!! ds1 was only 6.8lbs, so quite a shock. Name not definate but will probably be Oscar(nobody likes the name but me and dh)

Woke at 1am with pains but didn't think it was labour so didn't wake dh, stayed in bed for an hour and timed them and they were coming every 3 minutes so then thought perhaps it could be the real thing!
Woke dh and ran a bath which didn't help much but the pain was quite bearable. Still thought I was a way off but decided to ring my sister at 3 to come and stay with ds.
Rang hospital and they said even though the pains were not that strong I should still come in as they were so close together. Got to the hospital at 4am and was examined. Midwife had trouble finding my cervix and said that I was either fully dilated or not dilated at all! and went to get a second opinian. Second midwife found cervix on one side only and said I was 8cm!
Pains were getting strong by now and pretty much one after another. I couldn't help but start pushing and 10 minutes at 5.20am later he was born with no pain relief!
I had a second degree tear, grazes and hundreds of stitches which I have not dared to look at yet! but not too painful now.
All was well until after the labour when they helped me to have a bath, when I stood up I had trouble catching my breath so they kept me in last night for some tests bloods/ecg etc but could find nothing wrong. Put me on a drip overnight as they thought it could be dehydration and I was fine this morning, very strange.

Anyway if anyone is still reading! baby is lovely, bf well and ds loves him to bits but wants to call him cheese after his favourite food! He is well worth the pain and I have almost forgotten about it already!

sorry have not read all your posts yet but congratulations if there are any more babys! and hope you are all well.

Jess x

p.s what do you honestly think off the name Oscar?

Enthusia · 03/11/2005 19:17

Well done Alfiesmum - what a great story. Love the name Oscar as does my DH!!!!!

Well done without the pain relief too, lets hope you won't need much now either with those stitches!!!!!

twinkle1 · 03/11/2005 19:30

congrats alfiesmum

Ive been thinking of you all so much. I ashamed to say i am so jelous of you all. I should be with you about to pop too . Im finding this month harder than i thought. But hey we are off on Honeymoon soon and we wont stop bding till we get a super sticky baby.

Good luck and all my love to you all and your little ones. xxxxxx

beartime · 03/11/2005 20:03

Kristina, haven't been getting too many pains - just head-butts occasionally! (The bladder's the worst ) Congratulations on the baby turning! I'm the same with being irritable apart from its usually me that bursts into tears!

How do you guys all manage to get growth scans? I was 40cm today, and am 39+3 which sounded fine until I looked at the chart of normal growth in the notes, and it seems like it flattens out towards the end, so 40 is way bigger than it should be - does that mean baby's going to be big????

Congratulations Alfiesmum - I like Oscar - I like unusual names anyway.

Does anyone have any experience on different birthing positions as relates to risk of tearing? I've read all fours or kneeling reduces the risk the most - is that true? And how do you know when to get in that position?

KristinaM · 03/11/2005 20:16

Wonderful news Alfiesmum! And congratulations on such a big strapping boy - no wonder you are a bit sore! I have to say that if its a choice between Oscar and cheese...........its a hard one...... .....I woudl go for Cheese. But you are asking the wrong person as we are very traditional names people ( I know, a bit boring). And you need something intertesting to go with Alfred

Maddy - have a lovely honeymoon and sending lots of babydust your way

hamster · 03/11/2005 20:35

Hi ladies......

Haven't been on for a bit, been so busy with my one yr old and feeling generally crap!..........I'VE HAD MY BABY though!

Baby Euan was born at 5.46am yesterday morning, 8lb 8oz, labour was 2hrs 40 mins (shockingly quick!)

For those that want to know here's how it happened-
I woke at about 3.10am with tummy pains, I thought it was nothing and tried to get back to sleep. Shortly after, I really needed to go toilet(really runny tummy!)
After about an hour of pacing and trips to the loo, I woke DP who ran me a bath.
I spent about an hour in the bath trying to time my contractions, but they were all over the place.
We called MIL at 5.20am to babysit DS (by which time the pain was UNBEARABLE)and got ready to go.
By the time she got here-about 5 mins later -my waters had broken and I was getting the sensation to push.
The trip to the hospital was unbelieveable, I could not sit down, as the head was crowning in the car!
I managed to waddle up the path once at the hospital, holding the head, and they rushed me into the first room in the corridor of the labour suite.
DP said that as soon as my trousers came off, the head was out, and I just pushed him out onto the bed.
LOL It was an experience I will definitely never forget! No time for ANY pain relief-just a couple of paracetemol after!

I won't be on for a while! But as soon as things get organised, I will be joining the "Nov 2005 Baby" thread!

Laylasmum, Londoner, Alfiesmum, Beksmum CONGRATS!

Alfiesmum, it sounds like we had babies at the same time(ish).....I'll find out how you're getting on next time I'm on!

Take care everyone

Diege · 03/11/2005 20:41

Congratulations Alfiesmum! Love the name Oscar . Oh Maddy, I feel for you, and hope you have a lovely, relaxing, honeymoon.
ChaCha - I have my heart set on a waterbirth, although midwife today says some midwives might consider me 'high risk'because of blood pressure with dd2 (it's been fine this time)and therefore wouldn't allow it . She would, but depends on who I get. One more battle to deal with - does anyone know if you can ask for a second opinion when in labour? (if you can be bothered!).
Apart from that, appointment fine. Baby fully engaged, and predicted weight about 8lb or so. MW doesn't think I'll go beyond next week, so final countdown commences! LOL Kristina re: my hair appointment. I'm determined to make it, even if I'm having contractions!!.
Diege, 38+4

Diege · 03/11/2005 20:46

OMG hamster congratulations!! !! Sounds like a scene out of Holby City (or more like ER!)Love the name, and can't believe you managed without pain relief!! Good luck, and get us know how you are getting on!

beartime · 03/11/2005 21:05

Maddy, I'm new on here so didn't know whether to say anything, but I hope you have a lovely time, and soon be on your way to a baby too

wow I can't believe that birth story - I'm wishing that one on myself for tonight!

Diege, my hairdresser said that she cut someone's hair who was in labour, who seemed quite unconcerned, but she said she'd never done it quite so fast - so you might not get such a good haircut!!

MW said very busy at the moment - she had to create an extra appointment for me next week, and that it usually only happens when it was the world cup or something 9 mths ago. So I said well maybe it's all the valentines babies??

tessasmum · 03/11/2005 21:05

Wow, loads of babies. Congratulations to Yingers, Alfiesmum and Hamster. And thanks for the story BEKS. All the 2nd timers sound like quick ones, I REALLY hope I keep up the trend, Tessa was just under 8 hours and most of what I've heard is that second ones come in half the time. If we get past 4 hours I'm going to be very pee'd off

Alfiesmum- could have 2 on here called Cheese if Tessa gets wind that babies can be called after favourite food

Another bad night's sleep last night, loads of tightenings and matching heartburn. Still tightening a lot today and just waiting for it to start hurting. Even cleaned our bedroom so this might be nesting!

One for the homebirthers. I met someone yesterday who has had 3 homebirths. She said her best advice was that regardless of where you have the baby have a clean set of bedclothes ready. Often whilst you have your bath the midwives offer to make up your bed and its better to have bedclothes to hand than to rely on DH to know where they are

I've got midwife appointment tomorrow so have to do the peeing in a pot thing again. Definately can't see what I'm doing and last week I had a nosy 2 year old about a foot away, peering in with great interest as I muttered and swore and managed to get about 3 dribbles in the damn thing. She thinks the whole pee in a pot thing is very funny anyway. Going to try and sneak in and do it without her tomorrow but don't hold out much hope!

Right off for a bath and, hopefully, a decent night's sleep.

KristinaM · 03/11/2005 21:28

well done hamster - I'm so impressed with all these fast labours and hoping for one myself. Euan is a beautiful name - not as nice as Cheese but still lovely. How is your toddler coping?

Busyalexsmummy · 03/11/2005 23:20

kristina-alex was 46cm at birth, so shorter than the average 50cm .Alex is the same, hes got a tiny waist but weighs alot. They did a growth scan as Alex was 8lb 13 1/2oz at birth and considering Im only 5ft2 with 4 1/2feet and not a huge build, it was a huge baby!! so they wanted to see what they think this one weighs, they think its about 6.5lbs at the moment, which is hard know if its right as they can get it so wrong. no havent got GD

Congratulations to Yingers, Alfiesmum and Hamster!

Right off to bed for maybe a few hours sleep if im lucky

Hey well done Hamster - what a super birth!!!! Think Euan is a lovely name!

Hope all of you got a good nights sleep last night. It was my turn to be up. Mind alive and DH taking over the bed!!!!

My friend from NCT is having her twins by C-section this morning after the little girl wasn't getting the right placental blood flow, so it is all go at the mo. Still nothing here though, looks like I might make my EDD after all.

Hopefully out with a friend today so that should make day go a little faster before the last week build up!!!!

Have noticed bubs has become a lot more active since yesterday, loads of movement at the top. Wouldn't stop whilst I was having my dinner - very weird tring to eat whilst getting beaten up. Anyone else having more movement now?

MaddyD - Have a great honeymoon, you deserve it! Also enjoy the bding as its not quite the same after the pg test come out bfp, which I am sure it will do very soon!!!!!!!

Twinkle - your c-section is on my edd, wonder whther I will be joining you!!!!!

39 weeks today!!!!!!!!

Oh has anyone heard from BoB?

beartime · 04/11/2005 07:14

I thought I posted a message on here, but can't see it! Anyway, i think I'm in labour - first pain at 3:30am thought it might be wind, and then got more and couldn't sleep, so got up and took shower at 4:30 and cleaned bathroom . Then went and has something to eat and sat and read Bible. Then decided that I'd better go for a walk b4 it's too late and I can't anymore, so went out at 6am for walk, but got a bit scared about 20 mins away because the pains were suddenly 3 mins apart and that's when I'm s'posed to ring midwife! So I half-ran, half-walked back. Now they are 4 mins apart so haven't rung yet, but I think this is it...

beartime · 04/11/2005 07:17

Enthusia - know what you mean about DH taking over bed - mine does all the time! I've been having more movement too.

By the way this morning had some VERY sharp cervical type pains - I didn't know babies had such sharp heads! But I guess he's descending, hopefully
