bettyboo in our old house we couldn't fit a cot comfortably into our bedroom but the nursery was just next door to our room, about ten steps away. DS1 was a very noisy sleeper and I would wake up at every tiny murmur, so from about 6 weeks he was in the nursery. He wasn't sleeping well in the moses basket anyway because he was quite big and would hit the sides with his arms and wake up and I was exhausted, wide awake when he was sleeping soundly but noisily! DS2 was in with us for about 3 months, he was a smaller baby and a quieter sleeper. There are so many other risk factors for cot death e.g smoking that this one seems a good compromise to me seeing as baby is not actually far away at all. By about 12-14 weeks I have always had the baby having some of their daytime naps in their cot anyway so not too young IMO.

Hersetta · 30/03/2011 13:24

We will have a moses basket and stand in our room. Once that has been outgrown, Dirk will go into his own room - if not before.

If you've never had one, I can tell you babies are noisy sleepers. They grunt, snuffle and snore and in the end we were all disturbing each other so we moved DD into the Nursery (right next door to our room, kept all our doors open and had a monitor) from 6 weeks. Guess what....that was the first night DD slept through the night.

KTisPG · 30/03/2011 13:32

We will have the baby in with us indefinitely because we don't have room to move it out until we build our extension (on hold until I go back to work). I have a crib which doesn't take up much room but lasts longer than a moses basket.

With DD I didn't have room for the cot in our room so we used a travel cot instead for the first 6 months, worked really well and she always settled happily when we were away from home.

My scan's on Tuesday and I'm already starting to get nervous

betty at the moment we're planning a moses basket in our room for a few weeks, then moving baby in basket into cot. TBH as long as the baby isn't that far away, I have been told it is fine to put them straight in their cot from day 1.

Good luck with all the scans :)

SelinaDoula · 30/03/2011 15:04

Yellow team here.
Bump seems to be quite rapidly expanding.
I have bought a second hand Amby baby hammock in the hope of sleep, if not, will be co-sleeping like I did with DD.
Looking out for a second hand Nipper 360 which I think looks good!

Firawla · 30/03/2011 17:04

betty we have never been able to fit a cot in our room either, so once they outgrow moses basket into their own room, has been okay for us so far. I'm sure there are a lot of people who can't fit a cot in so have to do this, you can either leave the door open or put a monitor on so you will hear everything so should be fine. I agree about the noisy sleeping anyway, and i find it easier to sleep with them in their own room cos I worry about disturbing them

Annie456 · 30/03/2011 17:30

I was thinking of having a crib in our room but DH works such long hours I don't think it will be much fun for him if he is waking up constantly. The nursery will be next door but because we have a (very large) cat I wouldn't want to leave all the doors open. Either the baby will be with me in a crib or in the nursery with all doors closed and just baby monitors (which doesn't seem right?) what is anyone else doing about cats and new baby?

MrsVidic · 30/03/2011 18:15

We had a Moses basket and then cot with doors closed due to cat. Was absolutely fine for us.

Now the cat is in the routine of going out at night we will leave doors open.

littlemisslozza · 30/03/2011 18:16

I don't have a cat but if it was me I would get the cat used to only being allowed downstairs if that's at all possible? Same as with our dog who is not allowed upstairs.

aStarWithHerOwnWays · 30/03/2011 18:36

Annie you might find that your DH stays asleep through a lot more than you (unless he is a particularly light sleeper anyway). Many was the morning my DH enthused to me about how great it was that DS had slept through, only for me to inform him through gritted teeth that he was mistaken Grin

sisterT · 30/03/2011 19:39

We will use a moses basket until Posh/Becks grows out of it then transfer to the nursery with a futon in it for long nights - this worked well with DS. We have two cats which we got used to sleeping downstairs long before DS was born. Lucky buggers get the Aga to themselves in the winter so feel like they got the better deal Hmm

BettyBoo - my mum's name was Margaret but she was always known as Pearl which is why we would use it for a DD. Scan tomorrow - am now very nervous as even the burping has stopped today............. fingers crossed!

majormoo · 30/03/2011 19:49

we'll have a crib in our room, which should last til about 5 months, then will have the cot up for a couple of months before moving the baby out! A baby in our family died years ago as a result of cot death so I am paranoid about following the advice to the letter. Plus I have breastfed all mine, and intend to do the same with this one, so cannot be bothered with getting up to do night feeds (we are in a loft room so the kids' rooms are on a different floor to ours)

littlemisslozza · 30/03/2011 19:54

'Baby' has been kicking for the last week every time I sing bedtime songs to DS1 and DS2, it's so lovely! I can't wait until the scan tomorrow, so excited to see little one again. DS1 is pretty excited about having another baby, he keeps asking if he can see it yet. My bump is still quite small but when it gets bigger I'm sure he'll understand a bit better.I was huge first time round and smaller in 2nd and 3rd pregnancies, weirdly.

Annie my DH gets up at 5am every day (farmer) and he manages to sleep all night, maybe waking momentarily but he never remembers in the morning. The only time he is properly disturbed is if one of the children ends up in our bed and wriggles a lot! Then he sleeps in the spare room.

alibaba76 · 30/03/2011 19:56

bettyboo83 I have a tiny bedroom too, so it'll be a moses basket in there and it'll just have to fit until 6 months when it can go into cot next door, because we have no other alternative!!!
I have seen small cots (or cradles which rock), bigger than moses basket, so that might be an alternative....

Scan tomorrow - woot!

CappuccinoCarrie · 30/03/2011 20:56

If you can't fit a cot, I would def recommend a crib instead of a moses basket as they take up much less space and they baby can stay in it for much longer. The one we use is pretty much at bed height so perfect for picking baby up for night time feeds.
Scan in 5 days, but DD's 4th birthday, 2 nights of her ballet show and an influx of grandparents need to occur before then. Oh and we're finally getting round to going to the car seat fitters to prove to DH that three seats won't fit across the back of our car. Fortunately there's a car dealership right next door Grin

LifeOfKate · 30/03/2011 21:44

We'll be co-sleeping initially which is what we did last time, DS wouldn't entertain sleeping in a seperate bed until he was about 8ish weeks old for love nor money! We co-slept until about 8 weeks, then semi-co-slept in the spare room (he would go into a cot next to the bed but would often end up with me anyway) until about 3 months when he would spend most of the night in his cot and then I moved back into my own bed when he was about 4 months old and I was a lot more comfortable about leaving him. He fed in the night until he was about 9 months though, so I did frequently end up spending some sleeping hours in the spare room with him until then. Now (he's 15 months) one of us only stays in there if he is ill/feeling particularly lonely, so not very often. DS is moving into another room in a few months (a bed hopefully!), so will be hoping to follow a similar pattern with this one :) We had to be in a seperate room to DH though as he is a horrific sleeper so would be kept awake by DS all night :(

bettyboo83 · 30/03/2011 22:50

Thanks for your advice everyone, I'm feeling much better about it now. My Grandma is giving us the family crib so hopefully this will last us a bit longer xxx

aStarWithHerOwnWays · 31/03/2011 08:44

Good luck with your scan today alibaba! :)

FeralGirlCambs · 31/03/2011 09:14

KLou - our nursery is duck egg too - that's because it is anyway, and we are lazy. Though I have bought some fabric for new curtains (duck egg and white stripes) It also has all our stuff in it. Surely baby will find my half-worn tights as interesting as actual baby stimulating stuff?! Smile It's our dressing room at present (luxury!) but the plan is to put a single bed in there for nocturnal feeds / visits as well as Moses basket, then cot. Like bettyboo it's only inches from our bedroom so that's the plan but could bring Moses basket in with us. sisterT Posh Pearl has a certain ring to it...

Good luck with the scan daisyair and any others today.

Leilandri · 31/03/2011 09:14

Team BLUE here, and desperately trying not to spend as we are so skint :(
DH is facing redundancy and our lives are in limbo. Currently living with M-i-L, and we can't move out until we know what is happening with his job. It's a nightmare as I just want to get in, get DS settled, and get out all the baby bits again :(

We will be having baby in moses basket in our room to start, but as DS outgrew it at 6 weeks and this one is already scanning larger, then I don't expect him to be in it for long! DS went into nursery in cot at 6 weeks, with lights off and door closed, and he sleeps like a trooper, so am hoping to repeat with Baby2. I also found that I slept better once DS was in a different room, as I didn't panic at every single gurgle and snore! Grin

A question for those third time+ mums.... How do we get our MATB1 forms at 20 weeks 2nd time around, as I won't be seeing midwife til 28 weeks, and need to get paperwork underway? Confused

Good luck with everyone's upcoming scans xx

Yukana · 31/03/2011 09:40

Leil I know how you feel. Literally even gaining £10 at the moment is a life saver. We have only a few hundred to spend on getting things for our new place, albeit I thank whatever higher power is up there for the fact I'm an odd child and in my younger years decided to buy myself furniture. I'm so sorry about your husband's job, these are hard times and let's face it even if benefits are available the government won't make things pleasant for you if you want to claim them.
My mother is a knitting maniac so has been knitting away like crazy in terms of baby stuff. I bought her a couple of baby knitting books early for mother's day and she seems to be thoroughly enjoying them, plus, it lowers the amount I need to buy, for which I am thankful.
It's surprising really though - I live in a small village and so many people have been helping me out it's unreal. I hope someone will be able to help you so you feel like your life is comfortable again. Hugs from me.

wheresmytractor · 31/03/2011 10:17

leilandri same boat here re redundancy, we find out in about 4 weeks and its not looking good. My husband is a teacher so there is always supply teaching but its hit and miss and the timing is disasterous. Good luck. Just phone your midwife and get them to leave it at reception at your docs for MatB. they'll understand you want to get cracking.

yukana I love knitted stuff, its so cute, your little one will look gorgeous. Car boots are brilliant too, most stuff 50p to £1 for stuff that has probably only been used for a couple of months.

Good luck with all your scans ladies x x

littlemisslozza · 31/03/2011 11:51

Leilandri yes, as wheresmytractor has said, ring your midwife and she'll either leave it at reception at the drs for you or post it out.

yukana nct nearly new sales are great for second hand things from clothes to toys and all baby equipment, you do have to queue up to be first in though to get the best things. You can also then sell them on in the future, don't have to be a member to do that.

Scan in an hour and a half, can't wait!

KLou111 · 31/03/2011 11:57

Good luck with all the scans.

Re forms Leilandri, are they on the net?
I'm classed as self employed and I think I have to put mine in soon, but I'm seeing MW at 24 weeks, so only 3 weeks for me to wait, but am sure they're on the net

KLou111 · 31/03/2011 12:04

Sorry, re form, I was thinking about the one you fill in rather than the pne you directly get off your MW doh!
Can you go to the Dr's and get it?
