Brilliant news MrsS!!

I had a MW appointment yesterday - all ok, but I'm going to have to have a glucose tolerance test (for gestational diabetes) at 28 weeks because my BMI is over 30. I'm not allowed to eat from midnight the day before, and only clear fluids, then have to go to antenatal clinic, have bloods done and drink 500ml Lucozade. Then I have to sit there for 2 hours! while they see if I react. And I won't be able to eat until after the 2 hours is up. Doesn't that sound absolutely delightful!!!!

I'm almost 100% that I'm going to try for homebirth again, so I also have to be referred to the consultant midwife at 28 weeks to discuss it. Looks like that's going to be a busy week.

KT I have to have a GTT as well because my dad has type 2 diabetes. It's a right pain isn't it? And the hospital have said I can't bring DS, which means finding someone to look after him for 4 hours.

Firawla · 14/04/2011 09:03

i've got to have gtt too, i had it last time and was really worried but didn't end up having diabetes, although ds was huge but the tests had come back as negative for it? really hope it will be negative this time too, it can be a bit worrying.
im not too bothered about the sitting for hours thing, i will drop my other 2 ds off @ my mil and take the opertunity to read a book in peace or something. actually i think i will take the chance to go and chose a book specially for the occasion, i never get time to read anything. could be quite relaxing lol

impatient1 · 14/04/2011 09:32

Hi All, Havent posted for ages, but have been keeping up with the posts, (Just about)! Mrs S so glad your babies are rallying. Its absolutely amazing what can be acheived with modern surgical procedures!
Im getting lots of movement from my pink bump (third girl, DS was devastated ;D). Im having a GTT too, as well as my 28 week bloods, Anti-D and consultant clinic! May as well move in to the bloody hospital that week!

bebemooneedsabreak · 14/04/2011 10:43

dh vetoed my boy names :(

hope you're all well today xx

LifeOfKate · 14/04/2011 12:01

Hi, hope everybody's well :)

Great news about the twins Mrs Stevo, I'm so pleased for you :)

Nothing to report here, having serious trouble with boys names, we literally cannot think of any that we like :( Also having trouble with double buggies, we have picked the one we want, but can't afford it new and it only comes up once or twice a week on ebay. We have lost out on 2 on ebay this week, grr!

Annie456 · 14/04/2011 12:28

Hey ladies, I've been greedy with the appointments this week but just been given the clear on my platelets Grin it's still below the threshold but the consultant said it will have to drop a long way before they have to rule out epidurals and start re-writing my birth plan! yay!

Anyone else's work starting to get a bit shitty about everything? I work in a small team in a big company but it's the most unfriendly place ever...the only interaction I usually get is with my team but they have started to be a bit funny with me...and they don't even show an interest when I come back from scans and appointments! I don't expect them to BE interested, but surely they could SHOW an interest?!! It's going to be a long few weeks if this carries on - the girl I work with hates babies and so I can't ever talk about it while I'm at work. I get more emails from DH's colleagues asking how I am than my own... sorry, moan over Angry

KTisPG · 14/04/2011 12:55

Annie I sympathise re the work thing. I've been having an absolute nightmare with mine. Same kind of thing - big company, small team. Have all but accused them of bullying and pregnancy discrimination Sad so am not going to win any popularity contests, never mind the stress. grrrrr

Great News MrsStevo! So happy for you and glad you can get some peaceful sleep now! xx

On my side of the bump - I was so excited about seeing my stomach twitch each time bubba kicked on Monday that i rushed home later that evening so DH could see it too! But guess what? bubba has refused to perform for daddy so far!!!! When im at work all day i get kicked to death but as soon as i get home in the evening it stops only for it to start in the middle of the night (by which time i cant possibly wake up DH!!!) Its like he's playing hide n seek with DH :)) So guess will have to wait until the weekend to show DH (who by now is getting a bit impatient!)Grin

Ohh Mrsvidic - being kicked feels wierd enough ! wonder what the baby turning over must do!! not felt that yet!! :)

alibaba76 · 14/04/2011 15:09

Annie and KTisPG I get the same sometimes. Just a coolness in the office (also a small team in big company - is this a coincidence?). Obviuosly I'm leaving everyone in the shit and they're not happy. I try to shrug it off but sometimes it gets to me...
Never mind, we'll be away soon :)

littlemissw · 14/04/2011 15:13

Great to hear your good news MrsS & Annie!

I FINALLY got my 20 week scan too (at 22+ weeks) & am happy to report that all is well with the little pickle. The woman doing the scan was horrid to say the least & DH totally missed the whole thing as the reception told him there is no-one by my name booked in that day at all even though I asked them to tell him where I am when he turns up! He was livid as he obviously knew that I definitely was. I'm just really happy that we had a private scan at 17 w that was lovely & we got to find out what we are having then.

impatient1, I have to have Anti-D too, but my midwife has not mentioned anything about it at all yet & I'm not due to see her now until 28 weeks. Is that when you are due to have it? (I can't remember from last time).

Good luck to all of you with GTT tests coming up. It does not sound like a great day out at all.

Jokat · 14/04/2011 15:48

Hi Ladies, thought I'll introduce myself: This is my second pregnancy, I'm due on 18 August. I'm 31 and live in South London. Our dd is 2.5 and was born 11 weeks early, has a mild-ish case of cerebral palsy (can walk :-)) and seems to find it quite entertaining that there's a baby in mummy's tummy. When she wants to be funny she'll say I've got Peppa Pig in there :-) She came early because of an abruption of my placenta, and even though it is very unlikely to happen again, I'm under a consultant this time around and have a scan every four weeks, which is very reassuring.
We don't want to know what we're having and so far everything has gone very smoothly. I need to pee ALL THE TIME, start to find carrying dd around quite hard and absolutely love all the movement in my tummy. I am loving this stage of being pregnant and the fact I now look pregnant rather than just a bit fat :-)
Looking forward to sharing our special and trivial on-goings in te months to come!

FeralGirlCambs · 14/04/2011 15:49

Hello everyone. I haven't posted for AGEs or really even managed to keep up, but I just wanted to say how relieved I am for you, Mrs S. I do hope you can enjoy the remaining weeks.

The GTT thing sounds vile. In Cambridgeshire they make everyone drink some lucozade (not on an empty stomach) before an appt (so you have to buy your own) then come in for a blood test. Only those whom that reveals a likelihood of probs with get the full works. Sounds quite sensible to me. I learnt that at my 25 week m/w appt (at 24 + 1 as going on holiday), where everything was apparently fine, though I rather took against the m/w, one I had not seen before, and probably she against me. One interesting thing, though, was she was pushing a home birth - I hadn't really considered this, but she got me wondering why not. Anyone got any thoughts?

bebemooneedsabreak · 14/04/2011 16:00

Glad to hear things are well with your lo's MrsS :)

Hi Jokat

work- sounds terrible- have your tried throwing up on them? Wink or are you out of that phase already? ...still waiting here

homebirths- I wouldn't be able to handle it...I'd have to clean up before anyone came over to help me give birth! I'd go nuts Wink

KLou111 · 14/04/2011 17:24

Welcome and congrats jokat :) Hope everything goes smoothly, your dd sounds a cuttie :)

Ferel they push for homebirths here too. I think it's cos they haven't got a lot of beds! DH is all for it (we live in a converted barn and I think he likes the whole baby born in a barn thing lol!) As it's our first, I would prefer to go to hospital, although I really really want a water birth and there is only one pool, so if I want one guaranteed, I have to have one at home. I'd still rather go to hospital I think though if it came to it.

Been told off by DH today as have been sorting some stuff in the garden and pulling stuff out the ground etc etc. I feel so useless and was a bit bored, so I wanted to do something, then he told me he'd do it. I didn't want him to do it, hence I was doing it lol!!

littlemissw · 14/04/2011 17:43

Just wondering if any of you ladies watched this earlier this week?

FeralGirlCambs&, a homebirth is definitely worth considering, especially with a first baby. I loved the idea of having a midwife all to myself throughout labour & 2 for the birth. You certainly won't get that sort of attention in hospital. This is a great site if you want to find out more. I think there is a few ladies on here that are also thinking of a HB & if would be worth your while talking to SelinaDoula.

impatient1 · 14/04/2011 18:47

littlemissw, I have had anti-d at 28 weeks in each pregnancy, the midwife has probably ordered it in and will jab you at the next appointment :D

Carnival · 14/04/2011 19:05

Really glad for you MrsSSmile.

littlemissw, I'm having anti-D at 28 weeks, they've also sent me a laminated green card that goes with my notes to alert them to negative blood status. I'm in Scotland, and I guess it's done differently all over. Sure, a bit of consistency with these things would be nice!

I haven't had anyone suggest a homebirth, I like the idea of it, but had a few problems with last birth and reckon I'd end up in the hospital anyway.

How's everyone feeling? I'm starting to feel a bit of a waddle coming on when I walk, which I'm sure didn't happen until later last time.

KLou111 · 14/04/2011 19:12

Just a quickie, neighbour dropped around 12 duck eggs as they've gone away (also dropped their guinea pigs off last night!), can I eat them? Can't find anything on them on the net that you can't eat them.
TIA :)

KLou111 · 14/04/2011 19:16

the duck eggs I mean, not the guinea pigs!!

JenniL1977 · 14/04/2011 19:33

KLou, duck eggs are same as chicken eggs, cook them properly and you'll be fine. Mmmmm, I love duck eggs. So much more creamy and filling.

Feral I'm totally having a homebirth. Got it all worked out (well, I think!); I'll find a thread I found really helpful and interesting and post it for you. I just thibnk it'll be much more chilled for all 3 of us - DH is a nightmare in hospitals, and if he gets pissed off, I'll get pissed off with him, and none of us want that! Plus you can be more active, and you tend to get less intervention. Then get in your own bed with your own germs, not everyone else's! (Have had 3 people I know get c-diff in the last 3 weeks in hospital. screw that!) You can hire a pool of you want a waterbirth, or buy one for about £150 (google pool in a box).

MrsV I got that last night, feeling the baby turn over! It was so wierd! She did it for ages - I was lying down on the sofa trying to get comfy - as we're moving house on Saturday I've done loads of bending and running up and down the stairs, so i think that as she'd not had chance to kick me all day, she decided to do this to me! She's definitely going to be a contrary little thing...
The move's going ok, but I'm shocked at how little I can do nowadays... I'm so glad I was sensible and took plenty of time off work to pack (usually I do it all in one day, easily). I'm so glad we're moving now and not in 6 weeks. I'm starting to get that pregnant stance and have to splay my legs to bend over now!

Hi Jokat, welcome to the club!

So glad all is looking better MrsS, good work there :)

Hope all's well out there :D

JenniL1977 · 14/04/2011 20:05

Here you go Feral www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childbirth/573041-the-thread-for-first-time-home-birthers-or-thinking-about?pg=40

KTisPG · 14/04/2011 20:41

Hi Jokat. Welcome
Feral I've planned homebirth twice before and ended up going in - first time I got tired and baby was back to back so was more painful and I wanted an epidural (wish I hadn't done that ever since but hindsight is a great thing). Second time round my waters didn't break and they won't break them at home in case the cord prolapses (comes out a bit with the waters, sorry if TMI) which can harm the baby. Because I'd planned a homebirth my GP was all set to do the postnatal checks so I was only in for 3 hours. I went in, they broke my waters, DS was born within an hour, I had a little rest and got cleaned up and went home - brilliant!!

I'm definitely going to try again this time because you get such good care - as Jenni said two midwifes to yourself during the birth. They clean everything up for you too and I love the idea of being tucked up in my own bed with my new baby, the kids can come home from grandparents etc etc.

I'm O-neg too, but I've declined the automatic anti-D. I will only have it if I have a bleed before birth, or at birth they will test the baby's blood and if it is possitive, I'll have the anti-D then. Not for everyone, but worth remembering all treatment is up to you - you don't have to have anything you don't want. Obviously worth understanding the risks, but I'm almost certain DH is negative too as both DC are O-neg IYSWIM.

KLou111 · 14/04/2011 20:47

Had a look at home birthing pools a few months ago Jenni I was quite shocked at how reasonable they were to buy TBH. It was cheaper to buy than to hire as who knows how long you'll need it for and if you're early and you don't have the pool yet, you're screwed!
I would like a home birth in some respects, and hospital is only 7 miles down 1 straight road, but really really am scared about if anything goes wrong.
It would be so much easier at home esp as we have a dog, and will have another in a week or so and we have no friends or family here (although the neighbours are great), but I think it's the whole it's our first and I'm already scared shitless of the birth without any problems getting in the way too Confused

lilyraesmommy · 14/04/2011 21:43
