Secondhand is definitely the way to go! I am on my 4th! And if you choose wisely is can work out very econmical - I bought a double mountain buggy for £300 (new would've been about £900), used it for 18 months and then sold it for £285!! So £15 to hire it for 18 months. I love the mamas and papas for having a proper lay flat carrycot and forward facing but I did get frustrated but its manouevrabilty (sp.) - we still have one (you can get 2nd hand for £50 - which I will use for 1st few months as pram but will switch to Phil & Ted as my main pushchair (again bought 2nd hand with proceeds from Mountain Buggy) as its so easy to move and the double seat is really handy for toddlers when their legs tire (or maximising shopping space Wink)

bumpandisaacsmum · 12/04/2011 22:08

Poppet45 my sister has the bebe-confort streety, not sure on frame weight but feels really light (DS 5yo can lift it folded). It not brill at off-roading but - has bar-handle, good size shopping basket, lockable wheels & easy to fold umbrella style esp when in forward facing mode (not quite one-handed but can do it whilst holding baby!!) Minght be worth a look, I probably would have gone for it if the handle height was adjustable (or just higher!!)

Glad your MW appt went well mashpot

Folicacid · 12/04/2011 22:11

Poppet I can't tell if you can put baby in from birth into a city mini jogger, it doesn't seem clear to me from the web. I wish the videos they have on their website included babies! Do you know?

Staceroo · 12/04/2011 22:22

Poppet hadn't quite pictured myself as a "sea mammal" yet, so thanks for that thought! Can't wait now! [she says sarcastically]

Pips Really crummy about the mw attitude! Hope your usual mw is back soon, and all is OK again with you soon!

Re alcohol in moderation.. my best friend just gave birth after having a glass of red wine a week, and I didn't say anything to her, because I figure it's her choice, but I don't agree with it. I am a worrier though, and just think if there is the slightest risk, I don't want to take it!

Though I am feeling your pain Buffy re the loo breaks in the night! I have never ever been one for getting up in the night, once I'm asleep that's it. however the last week I've been up at least once a night to pee! Not looking forward to that getting worse!

So canyou get push chairs with adjustable height handles? Really hope so, because I'm only 5'4" and DH is 6'7". Also my in laws are all really tall, and MIL has already said " oh make sure you get a push chair with high handles!" and I'm like... erm... no I'll get one that suits me,,, beacause I'm gonna be the mum, and the one using it the most! However if you can get adjustable ones, that would be awesome. More for DH than MIL though!

knockedupagain · 12/04/2011 22:41

Pips I'm thinking that a sharp pain sounds like ligament pain. AF cramps are more generalised over a larger area, but sharp and specific, especially to one side (assuming it's not very early on when ectopic is still a risk) sounds like ligament pain. Buffy I've had a rotten cold for the last couple of days too! Been feeling very sorry for myself. Had quite a few sharp pains when I cough, but not at all worried about it. I've realised it hurts most when lying flat, so the thing to do is quickly raise your knees when you feel a cough coming, and it only hurts 20% in comparison. Sure it's just stretching.

dirge Oh I don't embarrass! My boobs feel great. You'd never know. Even I can only feel the implants in one position at the sides near my armpits. And that's only because I can tell me from not me. I doubt any man would ever notice. Because the implants are under my breasts, I still have a natural (rather veiny at the moment!) appearance. My nipples and skin are still just as responsive to touch, which is often sacrificed with implants just under the skin. I was very definite in what I wanted. I told the surgeon that I didn't want round fake looking globes, and that I wanted to fail the pencil test - I didn't want sticking out breasts that belonged on a 17 year old on what was then a 45 year old body! And the bit that will hold a pencil underneath also hides the small scar! I ended up a 'D' cup, when I thought I would have preferred a 'C', as the surgeon said they would still look empty with anything less, and actually I'm very happy with a 'D' - it's really not that big!

Your poor friend who tried Match.com! I found that men either had no kids and were therefore not interested (fair enough!) or had kids and were looking for an occasional dinner plus shag on nights when their kids weren't staying with them - no intention of ever introducing a girlfriend to their kids let alone setting up a home with permanent new partner. I can't be bothered with a 'friends with benefits' relationship. Actually, having decided the men were not worth having, I briefly tried dating another woman. But whilst I do find women attractive, I did feel it was all foreplay and no fiveplay! I've concluded that I am essentially straight - don't mind a woman in bed, but would want a man in there too! She'd had a boob job done just under the skin, and whilst it was a very good job in that she did look natural, they didn't feel great - two bags of silicon. The downside to having them under the muscle is that the recovery is much longer. It was a full six months before I could do heavy lifting again. My stomach was mended after only 3. Worth it though.

WuzzAndBuddy · 12/04/2011 23:26

Just passing through on my way to bed... busy few days... didn't want to lose the thread!
Will catch up tomorrow xx

H007 · 13/04/2011 06:16

knockedupagain all foreplay no fiveplay hahaha that's brilliant, gave me an early morning chuckle :)

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 13/04/2011 07:43

Loving all the chat. knockedup I like your style!

The iCandy has height adjustable handle, a full bar so you can push one-handed and a huge basket. We liked the silver cross before we found the iCandy but we were seriously unimpressed with the car seat. Didn't feel secure in the car and didn't have an isofix base to slot in the car.
(I'm not on commission honestly). Cost us about £500 all in brand new but apart from a buggy board for DD, we'll not have to buy anythinmg else. If DD was younger we could upgrade the iCandy Apple to a Pear for a 2 seater.

Re alcohol. I say each to their own. I've gone off it a bit but I also don't listen to the doom and gloom mongers at the g'ment who have to apply the lowest common denominator to all. I had a unit of alcohol twice a wk with DD and it relaxed me. With this one, I'm having a very small glass of wine once a wk. In France they actually recommend a pg woman has a glass of red wine once a wk as it's good for them and relaxes them. So I would say, relax and have a small glass if you want.

Have a good day!

Folicacid · 13/04/2011 08:02

Brilliant chat knocked up, i feel I ought to share something deeply personal and hilarious in return...but I can't think of owt. Oh dear!

Pipsbump · 13/04/2011 08:10

Good Morning,

Thank you for all of your advice and support ladies. poppet and knockedup I think you're right about the ligament pain, although I have never had a flat stomach :o and not much chance of me having one now Blush I am thinking either that or a cyst on my ovary? Appointment is later on this morning and then I am going to visit a friend who is painting her nursery today (awe)...she is due on May Day, so the beginning is near for her.

I had a rubbish nights sleep so when I called into work this morning I really did sound rough! Feel bad for lying, although friend said not exactly lying...just altering the truth. I think I will tell work once I've had all the test results back, when do you think you will all tell your work?

Re alcohol, I've not had any since we had the pregnancy confirmed but I bought a bottle of Veuve (my favourite) a year ago and it has been sitting in my Mum and Dad's fridge. Mum wouldn't allow me to open it until we had something to celebrate, fx when I go home next month we'll be opening it and I will allow myself a small glass :o...so hang on in there Pip!

Hope everyone has a good day, it's a bit cloudy down here in the South East...was that our summer? I found it hot at 10 weeks...what am I going to be like in August at 6 months pregnant (all going well?).

Take care
x

Katiebeau · 13/04/2011 08:21

Hello busy busy thread yesterday and we are onto buggies already.

My only stipulations were that our buggy for DD was light, I could fold it without murdering someone close by from frustration, it took a Maxi-cosi carseat and it did parent and forward facing. We settled in the end on the Bee (first version). The next version is OK but it doesn't seem to go as flat which would have put me off it to be honest for a newborn. I have to say I love my Bee Mark One. Handle very easily adjustable by the way! I did miss having a pram though. I would have loved a proper pram but the Silvercross/MamasandPapas/Cameleon/i-Candy were all too heavy for me.

We borrowed a moses basket but this time we will get a crib which is bigger so we avoid the cot in the bedroom for as long as possible. I like to have them with us until 6 months but don't like the bruised knees. We had a cot and changing station from my sister so we just need a new matress again (yawn) and we have all the other stuff too. Although my DH wants new bottles if I can't BF again. I sincerely hope we don't need them!!

We lent a friend our carseat, changing station and other stuff which we will be getting back no problem (the 2nd thing my friend said when I said I was pregnant!).

I will invest in a new changing bag, mine is knackered!!!!!

Good luck and FX crossed to all of you having worrying times. I hope it is all OK. xxxxx

Staceroo · 13/04/2011 08:28

knockedup thanks also for the early morning giggle!! I'd never be brave enough to have the boob job, though my mum had one recently, and although slightly annoyed by it at first, I've got used to them now and think it's greatab plus I might feel different after 3 kids!

Already loving my sudden surge from a B to a D due to being 9+ weeks pg!! As.is the DH!!

Appreciate the tip on the icandy mrsarch will sure to do some research on that one this evening!

Feeling really tired this morning, have been at work since 8 am which is early for me! Least I can get home a bit earlier, pretend I'm gonna do some tidying up and ironing and then fall asleep!!

Have a nice day all!

dirgeinvegas · 13/04/2011 09:56

Morning all!

Terrible nights sleep here. I did wonderfully until 4am when DD woke for milk and after that I just couldn't sleep. I got up this morning and dressed her for the childminder, starting feeling decidedly ropey and after everyone had left, I passed out in the kitchen.

At least it wasn't in public this time. I did mention the fainting to the useless MW and she said "oh that's funny isn't it". I've decided it can't be serious then.

Pips I think definite ligament stretching. It was one of my early symptoms with DD (my stomach was very tight - though not through exercise) and so I think I felt it strongly. It freaked me out tbh and drove me to buy a load of pregnancy books which basically said "Your ligaments start stretching now and it feels like XX".

Prams adjustable handles, rear and front facing? We got the Maxi Cosi Mura 3. It's quite pricey I think but we got it on offer from Kiddicare with a load of other bits. It is heavy but I love it. DD liked facing me and being able to look out at the world and it was the only pram she ever fell asleep in (we tried 3 but mostly used slings).

There's one on Ebay now with a hard and soft carrycot - bargain. We'll just stick with this one I think and possibly a new sling...

I am 11+1 today and yet here I am contemplating boob jobs, knockedup I think I might be sold!

I'm skipping the moses basket this time and going for a co-sleeper and bouncy chair for down stairs. You're right katie they are really creaky and yes, yes, yes to a new changing bag.

I'm also looking forward to having a bump in summer. DD was a January baby so I was big over autumn/winter. I am already browsing maternity clothes, in fact my mum bought me a maternity top and some bizarre trousers which look like the ones Joey wears to eat the Thanks Giving turkey in Friends.

I have my 12 week scan tomorrow. A wee bit early but I'm excited nevertheless...

staceroo your DH is 6'7" Shock

Poppet45 · 13/04/2011 10:45

Staceroo, yup you can put a newbie in a city jogger apparently - you can buy a head rest if you feel they need it, but we've got lots of buggy snuggles so the wee one would be nicely wedged in.
We used a Miyo baby hammock when DS was tiny instead of a cot. It was amazing, the slightest peep out of him at night and I'd rock it with my toe and he'd doze right off again. The only downside was it lulled us into thinking we had a great sleeper. When we moved him out of it at 4 months (he was so tall his legs were out the end) into a normal he never slept through again until 16 months old. Sigh.
Pips Don't know if it's too late for your appt but I was wondering if the pain could be a UTI instead? Are you drinking enough?
As for wine, I've gone right off it, but I deliberately didn't drink once I'd found about DS - because I'd had some very boozy nights when I didn't realised I was pregnant and felt v guilty. He's fine though!

Poppet45 · 13/04/2011 10:47

And sorry to hear about you fainting Dirge - low blood pressure?

mashpot · 13/04/2011 10:56

This is great, getting the lowdown on what is and isn't needed with new babies. Can't wait to start shopping but have to move house first!

I just read through the notes from my MW appt yesterday, no wonder it was so quick, we didn't talk about vitamins etc at all and I didn't know I should be taking vit D, is everyone else? I have only been taking Folic acid. She didn't ask about my diet and put it down in my notes as conventional when in fact I am vegetarian and she also noted my edd as 10 Nov without discussing it with me, when my GP agreed with me that it would be 16 Nov because I have a long cycle! I'm glad my next appt will be with my GP MW not the same person I saw yesterday!

NotJustKangaskhan · 13/04/2011 11:07

mashpot I just take a general 'pregnancy multivitamin' that covers everything, particularly as my previous pregnancies had awful morning sickess, so I know I'm covered with the extra iron and the like.

H007 · 13/04/2011 11:45

mashpot I'm vegetarian so decided as soon as I knew on a pregnacare multivit with folic just to be safe.

dirgeinvegas · 13/04/2011 11:48

I think so Poppet and perhaps a bit of low blood sugar in the mornings. I was just about to butter my toast! I did feel a bit stupid lying on the kitchen floor staring at the fridge, especially when I caught sight of my dishevelled self in my reflection in the cooker. Blush

I am the same with alcohol. I go off it completely although I still quite like the smell. I think DoH guidelines say that there is no known safe level but its not really a worry for me because I just can't drink it. I do look forward to having a drink once the baby is born though (I'm going to get a bottle of champagne to put in the fridge for after my HB )

I haven't been taking my vitamins. I feel dreadful about it but I just don't seem to remember. Is there folic acid in bread? That's my main worry, lack of folic acid...off to google...

dirgeinvegas · 13/04/2011 11:50

well at 11mg per slice and an RDA of 400mg I'd have to eat a lot of bread....

dirgeinvegas · 13/04/2011 11:53

mcg sorry not mg

toffeepud · 13/04/2011 12:24

Hello mums to be Grin

I am 9 weeks today and my scan is due on 05 May. Am finding it difficult to get excited though as I had a bleed at 6 weeks. Was checked out and everything was ok but have been spotting on and off since, no pain and all other pregnancy symptoms present and correct!

Just really nervous, worrying about possible mmc, trying to stay positive but don't think I can truly be reassured until the 12 week scan so I know for sure that bump is ok - just wish I could know NOW!! DP is still grining like a cheshire cat and doing his best to keep my spirits up. Fingers (and everything else!) crossed

Staceroo · 13/04/2011 12:26

Yes Dirge he is 6'7"!! I get a sore neck... but he is kind enough to bend down to kiss me most days! Just know baby is gonna take after him and be massive! (Trying not to think about the pain!).

Good luck with Scan tomorrow!!! Let us know how you get on! Oh and btw... I LOVE Joey's thanks giving trousers! So very jealous!

Pips I've had a lot of pains in my stomache, but not worrying about them because they feel like muscle type/stretching pains.

Katie if you want a new changing bag, I know that the boots parenting club gives you a free one when you buy a pack of pampers nappies or something! Haven't seen it in real life, just a pic, but looks like it might be a good bargain!

Mashpot I'm not taking any vitamin supps, only folic acid. Neither Doc or MW have mentioned that I should take anyting else! Confused

Staceroo · 13/04/2011 12:27

Sorry pips no reason you weren't in bold... didn't mean to leave you out! Blush

chipmonkey · 13/04/2011 13:33

Dirge I remember years ago, one MNer having a lovely homebirth and then sitting out in the garden with her dh enjoying a glass of wine!

I remember being very Envy as all my births have been so medicalised and not a sign of a bottle of wine in the hospital!
