Hello,
Started a new thread ladies, fingers crossed it works xx

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
NurseSunshine · 22/03/2011 18:23

Maybe best Jasmine, it would ease your mind at least. I found sucking on extra strong mints helped my ms. Glad the doppler thingie went well :)

KaraStarbuckThrace · 22/03/2011 18:36

Jasmine - yeah best to check with your MW, make sure everything is tickety boo with you and the lo.

Nurse - it's going to be fairly vague - if you are too proscriptive then you may not get what you want!

I'm saying no to episiotomy, no to epidural, and to minimal foetal montoring and I want to be as mobile as possible. I'd like to labour at home for as long as possible - we are only about 10mins from the hospital.
Everything else is open! I am also going to say that I don't want a managed 3rd stage and I'd like baby placed straight on me as soon as she is born and for the cord to be cut once it stops pulsing - unless there is a good reason to cut it earlier. With DS, I had a managed 3rd stage with Ds but the placenta was falling apart Shock He was fine btw!

NurseSunshine · 22/03/2011 18:48

Ah that's interesting about the cord Kara. Is there a paticular reason you're saying don't cut until after it stops pulsating? I was a bit confused on that issue and have just been reading about it and there seems to be some evidence that it's beneficial to cut it as soon as baby is born. Would be interested to hear evidence to the contrary. There's so many things to think about!

Will you be planning any other pain relief? How come no to epidural? What did you have with DS, if you don't mind my being nosy?!

sasamaxx · 22/03/2011 18:59

mrs - just weighed myself - have now gained 2.5 stone - so 35lbs

Sorry nurse I'm going to hospital as well, but will hopefully be midwives only. I LOVE the idea of a home birth so much and regularly flirt with the idea, but when it comes down to it, I'm just too chicken Blush

Barbie Glad that waffling made sense - sounds like a good plan. I'm always happy to talk about slings, so if you do find that you're really enjoying the closeness and convenience of carrying your baby, but aren't sure of baby's or your own comfort, that's the time to sell on the BB and get something else Smile

TTL I've taped OBEM to watch tonight - can't wait!
I love LOADS of slings - at the moment I have 5 wraps, 1 stretchy wrap, 3 buckle carriers, 1 mei tai and a ring sling - I am a bit obsessed, but believe it or not, there are people far worse than me lol.

Anyway - there are so many great carriers out there - some are better for smaller babies, some better for toddlers, some styles are easy to use (buckle carriers) but don't have the unbelievable adjustability and versatility of the slightly more complicated ones (wraps and mei tais).

I think the absolute most comfortable carrier for a newborn is definitely a wrap - stretchy ones are easier to use than the thick woven ones, but don't last as long. However, lots of people can't be bothered with all the long fabric-ness and learning-curveness of them, so for a lot of people the best first carrier is an easy peasy buckle carrier like a connecta (currently closed as the business is being sold but they will be open again soon) which is priced very similarly to a basic Baby Bjorn but has all of the benefits of the correct seating and support, and can be worn front and back. It's a very streamlined design and doesn't have a big thick structured waistband like some of the more substantial ones. There are various other carriers like this, like angelpack yamo and manduca

There is loads of info about slings in general on slingguide but the absolute way to discover which sling is right for you and your baby is to get along to a slingmeet and see them, try them on and get a feel for them - you can totally go before you have had your baby and there will be loads of people with lots of sling experience who will be able to recommend slings that might be right for you Grin

There is a thriving 2nd hand sling market as well, if anyone wants to know more about that.

Phew - somebody STOP ME!!! Wink

Just got to say WOW! Moomin Big congratulations on the arrival of your daughter- take care. Hope to read an update soon xxxx

Clarkiee · 22/03/2011 19:25

hey Jasmine glad they were pleased with the outcome of your doppler.

Had doppler reading today too. They said that the atery flow to the little twin (the one they were concerned about) seemed okay Grin. But strangley the flow to the other one wasn't as good but it might be because he head was in a awkward position! Consultant sent of my results to St Marys in Manchester and mid wife rang back tonight to say that they thought everything looked fine- hooray!

So pleased but still feel a bit strange because I spent all weekend and the last few days worrying and not being able to sleep- thinking about babies and finishing work etc. And now everything looks a lot better its messing up my mind a bit. Decided that I don't need to finish work at the end of this week now. But they did still say 'they could come early, then again they might not'. Think its the uncertaintey that is driving me a bit mad. An early night should help.

Thought I could get two slings one for the front and one for the back but then thought what if I fall over- lol!

Nurse Would love a home birth but dh is worried about me dying so would feel better with me being in the midwife led unit near us! Am being a bit sneaky though and have told him I would like to plan for a home birth just incase he is at work and doesn't get back in time, better to be safe then sorry . . . . now to get him off to work before labour starts and arrive too late for me to go anywhere Grin.

Glad readings went well today Jasmine and Clarkiee :)

More to catch up on but need to go and eat . . .again.

Oh and it isn't so much the number of epidurals that makes me wonder with obem but the fact I have only seen 1 or maybe 2 people give birth NOT lying on a bed on their back . . . . . makes it soooooo much harder (I speak from experience . . .. and stirrups!)

NurseSunshine · 22/03/2011 19:42

Yup I thought that too Knackered about the positions. I've been told by my student midwife friend who's also had 3 of her own, that being on your back is the absolute WORST thing you can do, makes the pain worse, slows everything down, you've got to work against gravity, pelvis is made narrower etc.

Glad your doppler reading was OK Clarkiee :) Yay for the little twin!

BarbieLovesKen · 22/03/2011 19:58

Am really interested in that now - I've had both mine on my back. Am wondering if I should try something else - its just that when I look at those programmes with people giving birth standing or kneeling etc it looks so much harder. Have probably being conditioned by all those movies over the years Grin

Nurse I too love the idea of a home birth but am much too anxious/ chicken to go throw with it. Anyway, as far as Im aware planned home births arent allowed here.

CitizenOscar · 22/03/2011 20:02

Massive congratulation to moomin - makes me think about how to balance being prepared, just in case things happen early, and leaving some things to do later on to pass the time in case I have to wait ages! Anyway, welcome to the world, Florence!

I bought a (new) Moby sling off ebay the other day. Very excited when it arrived - can't wait to try it out! Although 2 (male) colleagues recommended getting baby bjorn type as well if I want DH to carry the baby - wrap slings not manly enough for them! DH is away at the moment so I'll see what he says when he gets back. I reckon he'd look really sexy wearing the Moby Wink

Finding it hard to keep up with everyone, but am sending you all good wishes and hope you're all doing well :)

knackered76 · 22/03/2011 20:08

Barbie Gravity works with you if you are standing up or upright in some way so in theory a bit easier! I had dd on a bed in stirrups and had a ventouse and ds squatting on the floor, or a position something like that! DS was sooo much easier to get out and needed no help. My mw kept saying with dd 'ooohhh you're so nearly there, you don't need this ventouse' but didn't get me to change position or do anything to help me not have it! I am an adamant bed refuser now . . . .the only way they'll get me on one is to wrestle me on Grin. Also, not that it's true for all I'm sure, dd took over 3 hours to push out and ds 45mins. Pretty sure it's because with dd I was pushing her uphill so to speak Grin

Milliemuffin · 22/03/2011 20:19

Can't believe two people from 'Due in June' have had babies already, think it's time I packed a few bits just incase! My other 2 were both 2 weeks early so this one's either going to be early aswell or it'll make me wait and go 2 weeks overdue which is then just a week before DS's 4th birthday party!!

I've seen some comments about delivering standing up. Unfortunately I left it a little late to call for a community midwife for my planned home birth and they were all already out delivering babies so we had no choice but to blue light it to hospital. I walked into the delivery suite and I could feel her head coming so a midwife asked if I could 'part my feet' to make some room and out she came! No pushing or anything. Having spent the afternoon on my birthing ball with my tens machine then doing the walk from ambulance to hospital definitely got her into the right position and out she popped! DS was a different case entirely but he was 8lb with a 37cm head so I needed episiotomy/forceps with him, that was hell :(

I also drank lots of Raspberry Leaf Tea with DD (RLT as you may see it sometimes) and I took the capsules aswell so I'll definitely be doing that again this time round.

Congrats to Moomin - so pleased both hers and Storms little ones are doing well. xx

Gillzz · 22/03/2011 20:40

Huge congratulations Moonin to you and DH on your lovely baby daughter!!! So glad to hear she is doing well!! Xxxxxx

moomin156 · 22/03/2011 20:44

Evening everyone. All well today, Florence has remained on cpap and her oxygen levels have increased but still seems very stable. I got to have a 45min skin on skin cuddle this afternoon that obviously made me cry.

Someone asked for more details of what happened so here is the full story:
Had a wonderful weekend away and was sitting eating tea when I felt like I had wet myself a bit. Calmlu went to the loo without saying anything to DH as it was a bit embarrassing, once on the loo I knew it wasn't wee. Called DH and we phoned emergency number who told me to put a pad on and phone in an hour. 20min later we DH has bundled me into the car as I was just swimming and you could see my tummy deflating and softening. At hospital had a reveiw that showed cervix closed but obvious spontaneous rupture. Was told baby likely to arrive over nexyt 3 days if not would be sent home on anti biotics and monitored and induced at 34 weeks.
Sunday night had a few tightenings and a show at 7.45am but then all stopped and home again was mentioned. Scan at 3.20 showed 1 pool of fluid and good blood flow. 5.15pm had some tightings and was put on fetal monitor, mild contractions 15min apart. Mom and dad arrived for visiting at 6pm, needed a wee at 6.15pm which started labour. Needed to be standing, moving and refused to get back on my back for monitoring, contractions started to come quicker and stronger. Had to lie on back for examination which was horrible as you don't want to be still but had to be done. 6cm at 7pm. Got taken to delivery and 5 contractionns later I was 10 cm and ready to push. It was actually hard work until legs were put in stirrups, bloody painful but I had no analgesia other than some entenox at the end that I didn't like at all. Was given the injection to deliver placenta.

Not sure whatpeople want to know but please do ask. Have been told I was very good, quick labours are often more painful and small babies can be difficult to push out as you have nothing to push against. DH was just wonderfull throughout.

NurseSunshine · 22/03/2011 20:53

Oh Moomin you must have been so scared. It sounds like you did amazingly well and I'm so glad you've got to cuddle your little girl today. So glad Florence is doing well. Am thinking of you all. x

BPrincess · 22/03/2011 20:58

OMG!!! Just popped on to catch up it's all happening! Hugest congrats Moomin!!! Can't believe it's happened - and you get the Frist Out prize.

Hope you're all recovering from the shock ok and you're both being well looked after. What an event! But sounds like you can we well pleased with yourself, that really is an amazing story. Well done! Is this your first by the way?

Glad too for Jasmine and Clarkiee with their good news.

Millie you say two have had babies from the group... am I forgetting someone??

Well, anyone else feel like a total elephant, and knackered and hormonal? I just got home and cried for no reason tonight. Bleugh.

sasamaxx · 22/03/2011 21:21

Oh Moomin sounds like you did brilliantly - you really do seem so calm and collected and it sounds as though Florence is doing really well Smile

Jasmine and Clarkiee - that's great that your readings were good.

Yes Nurse that's right - you can put stretchy wraps on first and then put the baby in, so they are quite handy that way Smile
You do get 2nd hand slings on ebay, but you will probably get better prices on for sale boards of sling forums like Natural Mamas or the babywearer

Whoo hoo Citizen Oscar on getting a moby - just keep watching the lovely man if anyone needs convincing that a stretchy wrap isn't 'manly' Wink or have a look at this

Clarkiee people do tandem-carry twins - I know a couple of people online who do it Grin

motherofsnortpigs · 22/03/2011 21:27

Well done moomin and a big welcome to Florence Ruby. DH is still buying stuff for the tandem, so I'm still on my phone. sasa and anyone else who mentioned it - I'm too chicken to have a baby in hospital. barbie I've had 2 babies lying on my left side, and was sat in the bath for the entire labour with DS - very relaxing. Whoever asked what merlion was doing up in the middle of the night, I think she lives in the far east. I am pleased to note that DH is now buying a screen to replace the one on his netbook that DS stepped on - I may get my computer back soon. Taking the advice of BP I've also told him (rather than hinted) that I want the pair of trainers I've put on my Amazon wish list. jasmine pm me if there's anything you need. I'm going into Didcot tomorrow morning. Sorry you are feeling so yuk. I've previewed and can't work out why so much is in bold...

79monica · 22/03/2011 21:49

Congratulations Moomin!! I need to get on with buying baby stuff instead of obsessively buying maternity stuff - only have a moses basket and pram so far and your story has spurred me into action this weekend.

MalkieFraser I just read your post about your 50th and your LO's 18th birthdays being close - I hadn't thought about this but have just realised that as my LO is due 3 weeks after my 32nd birthday I will also have a big celebration month in May / June 2029!

Nurse I do pg yoga too. The baby loves the relaxation / breathing practice bits, he / she kicks like mad all of the way through!

NurseSunshine · 22/03/2011 21:50

Thanks for the links sasa, have bookmarked those pages.

Forgot who needed one but there's a dead cheap isofix car seat base here

Just watched OBEM. I cried when it showed Colin cycling with Suzanne in the side car thing. They were so sweet and lovely.

8rubberduckies · 22/03/2011 22:01

Bum! Just wrote a really long post and its disappeared Angry.

Barbie, glad you're going to try and take some time out Smile.

Nurse I am starting yoga next Tuesday - v excited. I have got a Groupon deal for a local teacher - 6 sessions for £25 - bargain! I went to yoga all throughout pregnancy with ds and loved it.

I can't have a home birth or use a midwife led unit as I carry Strep B so need an anti-biotic injection before dd makes an appearance to avoid it transferring to her during birth Sad. I have not been looking forward to a highly medicalised experience again, but had some good news today; my midwife told me that baba will be safe as long as I get the injection in 2 hours before she is born. I thought I'd have to go in really early, but it looks like I'll be able to stay at home a while Smile.

Sasamaxx thianks for all the sling links - I have a stretchy wrap and dp refused to use my "hippy" sling with ds, and used a Babybjorn, that did his back in. As I sometimes found the wrapping a bit of a faff I think I may have used it less than I would have if I had an easier one, so am thinking of getting something somewhere between the two. I intend to use a sling a lot this time, as it seems to make sense with a toddler to chase aroound.

Mummynumber2 · 22/03/2011 22:05

Wow moomin, it all happened so quickly! It must have been lovely to get to hold her for a while today.

Jasmine if it helps at all I know exactly how you feel. So sick today! I had about 3 weeks of very little sickness but it's really come back now. What's really helped though is avoiding things that make me feel sick (which is most food) and eating lots of sugar! Hope you're feeling a bit better.

Another weird thing has happened today, I woke up with a big numb area on the top of my bump. I've had a pain in my ribs in that sort of area for a while, now the skin feels numb but I've got a kind of burnng pain underneath. Any clue what's going on anyone. Confused

Milliemuffin · 22/03/2011 22:16
