ChaCha · 27/10/2005 13:26

Hi again,

Nova - Just a general question about bedding for baby's cot. Have no idea what to get/what is necessary. Any ideas?
I'm also looking for a cot mobile that's not so 'lots of animals in your face' iyswim, something simple like stars and moons or just basic. Thanks. How's little Natalie?

Jaysfirst - Thanks for all your updates.
Will join group later today.

Anyone have any idea if it's the head or legs that you can feel killing your ribs? As I mentioned before, right side of bump under rib protrudes to the right and really hurts ribs. Do hope this is not the head.

Hi all,

Gosh I'm with ?Nova on the multiple thread following! It's getting hard to keep up!

Bob,what camera is it? I'm after one could you put a link up at all? Re baby products - I put a tiny bit of johnsons baby bath in her bath water and oa tiny bit of oil on her after and a bit of talc then a smear of vaseline on her botty at change times! Have no clue on bottles TBH, dp would have a better idea as he's the one who feeds her from a bottle for a feed at night! Although she doesn't manage much, may get a MAM one for her rather than the Avent.

Chacha, saw your piccy last night, you beautiful glamorous woman you! And you too bob, you're just as bad! Feeling rather frumpy at the mo, my boobs aren't my property at the mo! Speaking of which, sounds like they're needed again!

Speak later x x x

babyonboard · 27/10/2005 14:38

chacha - i really like this bedding set.
It says there s a moon and starts mobile available but ni pics..maybe you'll find it elsewhere online?

rodeo this is the camera!
what a bargain!

babyonboard · 27/10/2005 14:41

Thanks for the advice on bottles..I've got an avent sterilizer which had four bottles in it, so will pick up a threee pack of mam ones and see which work best.
off to go shopping now, then meeting dp for dinner..were having curry though1 i may have to have a super mild korma ust to be safe..hehehee

novadandypowder · 27/10/2005 17:35

Chacha, you will be washing the bedding a lot! so IMO it's best to go for simple stuff that you can buy a few of. I only got two fitted sheets for the moses basket and ended up having to buy more due to vomits etc and if you don't have enough you end up doing laundry every day. Get enough fitted sheets for the basket/crib/cot so you can change it every day. We got swaddling wraps for the top bit from jojo maman bebe which seem to work well - if it's a bit hot to swaddle you can just use them as a top sheet and tuck the ends under the mattress. I found the blankets too big for the moses basket, and the house is plenty warm enough anyway. When she hits the 10lb mark I'm going to go for sleeping bags as she can kick off even the most securely tucked in top cover.

I find it very useful having a room thermometer as otherwise we'd have the room far too hot. What feels cool to me is actually the ideal room temp for a baby.

I've just ordered a music box with nightlight from blooming marvellous, they do like plinky music it seems!

Bath wise we use neals yard baby bath and lush baby shampoo every other day, and just plain water for the top and tail, with nothing on the skin after. For changing we've got neals yard baby barrier and baby balm, I'm a big organic and petroleum free fan. I also use Tushies wipes as they don't have any nasties in and it's easier than cooled boiled water and cotton wool.

novadandypowder · 27/10/2005 17:37

oh and BoB if you're bottle feeding you need about 6 bottles a day. I've got 6 and find that I can steralise and fill at night, and that keeps us going until the next day. They can only be stored in the fridge for 24 hours anyway so no point doing a bigger batch than that. Hope that makes sense??

HellKat · 27/10/2005 17:41

Hiya all,
Congrats Nova!
Good luck all. Thinking of you.
Just to let you know i mailed Beks. have'nt seen her post for a while so will let you all know.
xx

ChaCha · 27/10/2005 17:57

Hellkat - Glad to hear that you've contacted Beks. I'm sure her DH is on his way from Wales today but that shouldn't stop her from posting - hopefully all is well and she's doing good.

Nova - Thanks a billion for the tips. I really haven't a clue. Looked at the link BoB posted and that particular bedding set is beautiful but if we are to change sheets so often doubt i'll spend that much and go for some simple basics. Good that you mentioned thermometer too, I almost forgot that and I hear it's very important. I like to sleep in a cool room with duvet whereas DH likes the room warm with little cover - could be problematic so glad that you reminded me there. Are babies generally sick a lot?

karmamother · 27/10/2005 18:24

Evening ladies.

Not been online for a few days as I've been down in Norfolk visitng a friend. Boy, that freshly baked bread was heavenly! I've been toying with the idea of getting a bread maker for a while & she made it look really simple. Five mins to load it up before going to bed & you have gorgeous bread wafting round the house as you wake. Might have to set it to have the bread ready at 5am for those early feeds!

Well, surprised that no-one has popped yet!! Wonder what's happening with Enthusia, is she still in Manchester?

I've started the RLT & I have a question for you all. Does it make your Braxton Hicks stronger & more uncomfortable? I've only started on a low dose & I'll increase it on a daily basis but my BHs after the first capsule were a bit strong. I'm 36 weeks tomorrow so chances are they'd be getting stronger anyway. Anyone got any advice?

novadandypowder · 27/10/2005 19:09

No worries Chacha, IMHO it's best not to go for the fancy/expensive bedding sets (unless you have a limitless budget ) - no one else is going to be looking at them, and I'm sure the baby really doesn't mind . It's not sick so much as little dribbly possits that leave a lovely stain. And even if she's not been sick, it's still nice to change the sheets every other day to keep them fresh and clean.

I also didn't get many clothes to start with, but today alone she's on her 4th set. She likes to wait until we're just about to put her nappy on and wee's all over everything. Also, the 0-3 month old stuff is too big for her as she's such a weeny, so had to go out and get some newborn stuff. H&M have some good basics, got some little dungarees for £5.99 each which are cute but practical. If it doesn't have poppers for nappy changes, don't buy it.

Also - if it can't be tumble dried she's not using it!!

karmamother · 27/10/2005 19:29

Good advice there, nova. I know its hard to resist buying gorgeous baby clothes but when they've grown out of them & you realise they were only worn a few times, you feel a bit cheated. Especially when you have a girl!! I made a few bad purchases with DS....anything with a collar is just a vomit magnet & never sits right anyway. I also bought an over the head fleece with a hood...never worn, just too impractical.

I've been given a bag of white babygrows & vests by a friend so I think I might get them out tonight. I've even bought some non-bio just for them.

JenJam · 27/10/2005 19:49

hello everyone. I went back to bed straight after my pre-9 a.m. post and did not reemerge until 12 pm

..... then got on with the sorting. have sorted 1 pile, humming 'the only way is out...baby for you and me(remember Yazz?).

Thanks for advice on baby sheets and bottles etc, might take back the adorable but stupidly expensive mamas and papas gingham and get some mothercare specials

BoB PLEASE put the knitting pattern on the new site jay set up.

i've posted a couple of photos on there for anyone who is interested.

i shoulda shown you the flat before pregnancy - young urban modern minimalism (with piles) vs. after - yeah-ha grandma rocking chair, knitting needles, baby bouncer, etc etc...unco-ordinated and excessive range of cushions for my back, side, bum etc

anyhoo am now off to stretch my you-know-what.

beartime · 27/10/2005 19:58

Hi, I'm new on here, but I think it's the right place cos I'm due Nov 7th.
I just wanted to ask... I had a little yellow jelly blob yesterday evening in my panty liner - and I was wondering if that was the mucus plug, but all the books seems to say it's pink? So what do you think? I'm 38 weeks and 4 days now. Also i haven't had any braxton Hicks at all, or recognised them anyway, whereas everyone seems to say you do by now, so I don't quite understand that.
Can anyone help me?!!

JenJam · 27/10/2005 19:59

my 3 photos are taking ages to upload...... maybe it's best to download the upload tool at the top first.

Goldenoldie, Nova, Enthusia, LilJ (where is LilJ???) and anyone else who lives not too far away - how about another lunch at angel waga-mamas mid next week? Nova would be lovely to admire Natalie

JenJam · 27/10/2005 20:02

hello beartime, welcome. yeah...the books seem to talk of pink discharge, but from what i can gather from various experiences on MN you could have a mix of colours; clear, yellowish, pink, and texturs (jelly, lumps and watery) with or withotu blood...streaky.... I think mucuous in general is a good sign that you're on your way but don't panic because the contractions could be a day or a week away. i'm due 8th nov. where are you having yours?

Laylasmum · 27/10/2005 20:03

Hi Beartime welcome to the due in nov lot!! It could be your plug although mine with DD was tinged with blood, You can loose little bits at a time aswell which is what i'm doing getting small snotty blobs now and then!

As for braxton hicks i never felt them in my 1st pg nor in this one!!

beartime · 27/10/2005 20:07

That's reassuring about the braxton hicks, but not about loosing little bits at a time - i was hoping I would go into labour tonight! Sounds like it probably is that though from what jenjam said.
I'm having mine at home (as much of it as poss anyway since they say first timers are 40-60% transfer rate I think!). How about yours?

beartime · 27/10/2005 20:09

I've got backache too, but not constant, since last night, it only comes when i walk around, and only after i've been sitting down. But it's pretty bad, does that mean anything?

karmamother · 27/10/2005 20:34

Welcome beartime! It does sound like you may be in early labour. In my first pregnancy, I had a very long latent phase (this is the period from onset of contractions until established labour, at 3cms dilatation) & it just grumbled on for a few days.I made the mistake of just lounging around trying to get comfortable but I think this prolonged it. If you're having lots of backache it may mean that your baby is lying with its back to your back, facing front. Apparantly, you can encourage baby to move into a better position by leaning forwards or going on all fours (this may help the pain too).

Good luck, anyway. Remember to have something to eat regularly to keep your energy up.

tessasmum · 27/10/2005 20:52

Welcome Beartime - all sounds like you are on the way even if the show can happen up to 2 weeks before action stations. Backache can be another sign and don't worry about Braxton Hicks, I didn't feel anything last time (though DH could feel my belly tightening) but they have made up for it this time

Laylasmum - loved the 'snotty blobs' description, that's where I am exactly!

ChaCha - another option for Moses basket bottom sheets is to use ordinary pillowcases, they fit like a dream. For the cot we got a couple of cotton woven blankets and a fleecy one but I doubt we will use all of them at once unless the winter is as bad as predicted and the heating breaks down!

As for baby bath stuff, we didn't use anything on Tessa for about first 4-5 months apart from water. I have very dry and sensitive skin that reacts to a lot of stuff so was extra cautious. Then started to use Earth Friendly Baby bath/shampoo stuff. Have made several ventures into Johnsons, and more recently 'Halos 'n' Horns' shampoo, but after a few weeks her head starts to itch so we go back to EFB.
Did use vaseline on her bottom and found the Boots one is much softer so you need to use much less.

One thing I keep meaning to put on here for the first-timers is to get yourselves the biggest pot of the thickest handcream you can get. You will never wash your hands as much as you will in the next few months and they will disintegrate if you don't plaster them in cream

Still getting loads of twinges here, mainly at night, though that could be because there is a lot more going on in the day and they don't get noticed as much. A few have required a sharp intake of breath so we must be getting close! Again this didn't happen at all last time so really I haven't a clue!

beartime · 27/10/2005 21:05

Thanks for the help. I'm definitely not having a problem with eating regularly (by the way how do you put one of those grin faces in if you don't have square brackets on your keyboard?!)

My DH wants to paint the bathroom either tomorrow or Saturday but I am afraid that I might go into labour and then it would be horrible relaxing in a paint-fumed bathroom! Which day d'you think would be better? (I know that's a hard question!)
