Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LadyGoneGaga · 12/03/2011 17:00

Yes, was Cumbria one. Good because the non-pregnant got to go off and do fell walking and mountain biking and plenty for me and little ones to do. We splashed out on pricier chalet and worth it as all rooms en suite and hot tub, sauna and steam room in the house! Of course I could use none of them, boo.

Good luck with NCT, Score. I always smell of garlic anyway so I'd still make friends with you.

I like Next kids clothes too. And Gap. But I know nothing of girls stuff so may be bit clueless if is a pink flavour. I like little babies in white babygrows anyway - they look so uncomfy in clothes until they're a bit bigger.

owlbooty · 12/03/2011 17:11

They have owl and feesh outfits on that site. I luff them. They are damn pricey tho'. Why is it that the Scandiwegians make such lovely bright things?

Would it be daft to just ignore the 0-3 month size clothing apart from the odd cheapo vest, given that Owlet is unlikely to be under 8lb anyway, and maybe I could just roll his little sleeves up a bit until he expands?

GG holibobs sound fab - especially the owl-petting. I have always quite fancied center parcs but never got around to going.

I have overdone the gardening today - all the peas are planted but I am now stiff as a board and may not be able to move for the rest of the week. Whoops.

owlbooty · 12/03/2011 17:12

PS. Scorps is that you I can smell? Grin

LadyGoneGaga · 12/03/2011 17:56

Owlie I would say daft to ignore 0-3 months. MiniG was 8lb 2oz and still had him in newborn for a good few weeks, and then in 0-3 months for a good while longer. They just look a bit drowned and pathetic in clothes too big for them. But you don't have to spend a lot - just get some cheap white/neutral babygrows from Tesco or similar in relevant sizes - people tend to buy you stuff in 3-6 month size IME.

Starving - going to have to put dinner on.

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 18:02

Busy day, but we have achieved! TB discovered a nail in the back tyre so that explains the slow leak. So we now have a new back tyre, returned the changing table/drawers thingy to mothercare, bough bright coloured vests from M&S. signed up to Boots parents club and tracked down half price Avent steriliser (£10 instead of £20 if you can find one, is a bargain!) and bought paint for 'feature wall' in nursery. It did involve hellish trip to local retail park which I would I would normally avoid like the plague at a weekend but at least now we can reward ourselves with a curry and some chocolate.

gagsy your hollybobs sound lovely! I too am v jealous of Minis encounters with wildlife, especially the owl/hawk handling as have a bit of a thing for birds of prey.

Prego dreams are v weird, I had a horrible one about TB the other night. I was in labour in hospital and he turned up hung over and stoned dressed like a scally and had basically had a personality transplant. I ended up telling him to get out, I would have this baby on my own. I woke up crying and RLTB soothed me back to sleep with cuddles and back rubs, didn't I feel guilty about my evil faithless brain!!

score hope NCT is good this avo and you didnt have a 3 seat exclusion zone around to.

biteme I was having a mooch round that site the other day and there is some lovely stuff but I agree it is way too pricey. I decided I might buy things from there when Sprout is a bit older and won't grow out of them in 2 seconds flat. My rainbow babies stuff came this morning so had a little Squeeeeee over the matching trousers and hats in green in purple that will be randomly teamed with the M&S turquoise/yellow/pink/orange/red vests I got today. I am now wondering if I have over done it on the brights - child is going to look like a miniature 90's raver or an opal fruit :o

Muser · 12/03/2011 18:18

Definitely get 0-3 months stuff. We had newborn stuff and Bob was a bit titchy for it at 6lb13oz. So we got a few tiny baby sleepsuits. Now she's too long for those so she's in newborn, and the 0-3 months is still pretty big.

The sizing of clothes varies hugely anyway, some stuff is humongous and some titchy.

AlpinePony · 12/03/2011 18:28

The problem with non gender-specific clothing is that you may find yourself crying on aibu because a stranger calls your little princess "he".

IME very expensive and very cheap size small. Next stuff is fabolous, washes well and keeps looking fresh although far too naff and nouveau for many. Their loss.

As for names, try-hards set teeth on edge. Bear's name came in the top ten in scotland last year. He is without a doubt the only boy in this town with this name but so what anyway? Sebastian might be unusual in birkenhead but in fulham ten a penny.

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 18:45

Not arsed if someone mistakes Sprout for a boy, babies are pretty generic looking when really young so wouldn't get offended anymore than if someone called the cat 'she' :o You just correct them and laugh as they squirm.

Actually you raise a good point ponemalone, I am not sure if it's the genderisation that bothers me as much as the naff pastels and motifs. Next is a case in point really as I have never really liked their adult clothes so it's hardly surprising I find the baby stuff too mainstream too. Although I do like their swimwear and am impressed with the few maternity bits I bought. But I don't do pastels or naff prints for myself so am not likely to select them for myself however good the quality is.

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 18:47

Please substitute that last 'myself' for a 'my baby' to make my ramblings make a bit more sense!

LadyGoneGaga · 12/03/2011 18:51

That is a good point, Alps. MiniG has lovely surfy, curly blond hair which I hate cutting too short and he has been mistaken for a girl more than once. He is now obsessed with dinosaurs so mostly has a T-Rex emblazoned on his front. But I also like his Darth Vader jumper.

Loving the rave imagery, Sprocket - can't wait to see some piccies. Please get him a glow stick too - and some white scratch mitts?

I am totally sorted with girls name - first name is a lovely classic but fairly unusual name. Middle name is Mary - after my Mum who hasn't been in great health in recent years. MiniG was named after my dad (first name) who died when I was 7 months pregnant and ex-P's Granddad.

Boys name is still under discussion Grin - we have middle name sorted - Thomas after MrG's Grandad. Keep liking names and then going off them. Have been reduced to a spreadsheet Grin

My fear is SiL has a baby girl two months before me - am terrified she might use "my" name.

LadyGoneGaga · 12/03/2011 18:54

Also, anyone else have a very tactless Mother? Mine said I would have to buy an extra plane seat for our holiday in 8 weeks time as I probably won't fit in one given I am so large already for my stage Angry.

As she's off on hols with my 20 stone brother I was a little put out.

AlpinePony · 12/03/2011 18:59

What about pet names? You know Tabitha, Fred, Poppy, Mabel, Theo, Munchausen? ;-)

rocket not sure about motifs on adult clothes but I love the bears/dogs/monkeys on the little boys clothes and like ladyg have just got boden dinosaurs. Have sharks and octopii from joules. He's a walking zoologist!

AlpinePony · 12/03/2011 19:01

Mary is lovely btw, but vetoed by jb. Doesn't work too well on boys anyway though...

Casserole · 12/03/2011 19:10

I concur, Next clothes aren't always the most exciting, though they do the odd gem, but they do wash and wear well, and stay much softer. I've actually found more interesting clothes for ministew as he's got older; it was all baby blue with cars when he was tiny but now we have some lovely stuff. Polarn Y Pret (or something spelt similar) did us quite well in the early days, too, and again lasted much better than some of the more el cheapo stuff we had.

The names debate on here has really helped me actually, so thank you; something you said Score - your name, which I think is lovely by the way, isn't uncommon at all round here, I've had quite a few friends with your name growing up and now. Which has made me realise that the whole choosing a name based on whether you think it's popular or not is bollocks, as 10 minutes down the road no-one will have heard of it or vice versa. So I agree... go for something you love. Settled!

I am so frigging hungry.

Casserole · 12/03/2011 19:42

ps Gaga - am Shock and Angry at your Mum, that's an outrageous thing to say!

I am Braxton-Hicks-tastic tonight. I am shortly climbing into bed WITH my dinner and not getting out again until the morning. Would it be wrong just to wee in the bed???

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 19:42

Yeah dinosaurs are boss!! I find boys patterns normally a bit better than girls ones, think I just have an aversion to the usual fairy princess shite. Is funny a score was saying she doesn't like boys clothes and I don't really like the girlie stuff so maybe we should swap babies Wink as for 'motifs' on adults clothing I meant more that I don't go for ornate patterned things very often iyswim.

Although I did buy a sleep suit set the other day that was purple and greens and the plain one had a pony appliqué. Thought of you :o

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 19:44

Soz cross post cas as was typing that while fetching and eating curry in between. Get a tenna lady and a rubber sheet on and let it all flow. :o

Scorpette · 12/03/2011 19:46

How DARE other people share my sacred name?! I was 21 before I met anyone else with the same name then there were 3 of us doing the same course at Uni - just shows that geography can count.

Am loving the image of RaverSprout Grin But tell me, Rocket, in your dream, when TB turned up at the hossie as a scally, was he wearing a shellsuit and a curly wig? And when you got annoyed, did he say 'Calm down, calm down?'?

GG, I love both Mary and Thomas. Excellent, classic choices. I hope your mum's health improves

I couldn't give a shit if anyone mistakes The Lad for a girl. I'll not see them again, will I, and I know he's a boy. Also, my obsession with navy blue should help. Some woman at the NCT class, in the break, was going on about how it's important to establish their gender identity through clothes ASAP but I masterfully kept my gob shut (due to TYF gripping my hand in an iron claw-hold and with the other, tapping his cheek, which is his way of telling me that I'm doing this face: Hmm I just said 'oh, I'm not bothered by all that stuff'. I then had to return the iron-claw as the same woman went on about Rescue Remedy and homeopathy being bullshit is one of his obsessions.

But apart from that, the class went v well. TYF brushed his teeth to within an inch of their lives and didn't stink. Well, not any more than usual, y'know Wink The facilitator was really nice and all the other couples were nice too. Also, I wasn't the oldest or the biggest, not by a long chalk, which was a relief. In fact, I was one of the younger slimmer ones, huzzah (and I do look like a space hopper in a wig, believe me)! TYF spoke confidently and we learned lots of interesting stuff. In the car home, he looked a bit down - I asked if it was cos he hated it and he said he was feeling disgruntled because it was really good and he could see how much we'll benefit from doing the classes, but he hates sitting around chatting with strangers. So we're going to keep them up.

One thing that was annoying, however, was how the facilitator kept apologising to the men about how she has to discuss intimate things and stuff like maternity pants and that she'd talk to the ladies alone about more 'intimate' things on their own. I said that if we we were going to go through all these painful, undignified and possibly gruesome things then the least the men could do was know about it. Cue the dead-eye from a couple of the men who were a bit geezer-ish ie 'I'm so 'ard I can't handle hearing about leaky nipples'. Is it 1970? I think not. I managed to work in a comment about my friend who got massive varicous veins in her flaps just to freak out the geezer-men, buahaha. God, how I hate mimsy people.

Weirdly, all of us who knew we were having a boy had the biggest bumps by miles (regardless of weight/height). It's an old wives tale that this is the case, but it certainly proved true in our little group!

Scorpette · 12/03/2011 19:52

Also X-post - Cass get them rubber sheets down and don't give it a moment's thought. There was some discussion in AIBU t'other day where an alarming amount of people thought it was reasonable to wee in the bath Hmm Nice.

Where is Medee on her special day?

PS Rocks, I don't like all that fairy pwinceth stuff or glittery butterflies for girls either. The fashion hag in me plus my soupcon of French blood makes me a cruel taskmaster, style-wise.

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 19:58

:p score been a while since the Brookie stereo type rang true. He had shaved his head, was wearing a grey beanie (which he does own but looks cute with his fringe NOT with a skin head) and black north face down jacket. I said he looked like a scally not an 80's throw back Wink

I am stuffed, curry was AMAZING! Now for 7 ages of Britian.

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 20:00

Soz meant to say glad the NCT went well and you didn't end up in fisticuffs (plenty of time for that) :o

rocketleaf · 12/03/2011 20:32

White scratch mitts it genius gaga might have to purchase some fabric paints and put a acid smilie on one of the vests :o

LadyGoneGaga · 12/03/2011 21:42

Glad it went well, Score - you might find you warm to the blokes after a few sessions. Our NCT classes were same - blokes all bravado and geezer-y to begin with and gradually let their guard down. Anyway, it'll be the women you'll be cake eating mates with! Hopefully TYF will feel more comfortable over time especially as you get to know people better.

Mary and Thomas will just be middle names - but I like middle names that honour special people.

Oooh Cass - body gearing up. Maybe try out the monster maternity pads in the bed? Very absorbent.

Scorpette · 12/03/2011 23:15

Middle names are important, GG :) TYF's cousin's girlfriend had their baby yesterday - a little boy, born by emcs (she's only 23, poor thing). One of the boy's middle names is his and TYF's uncle who had Down's Syndrome and was, by all accounts, the coolest dude E-VER, so it's so good that he is remembered forever this way.

For one of The Lad's middle names, we'd quite like to use the name of my Dad's little brother who died when he was 2 (was actually TYF's suggestion - he adores my Gran) but it is an old-fashioned 1940s name. Although my no. 1 middle name choice is quite eccentric and old-fashioned anyway!

BTW, MIL's family's Boy Stronghold continues apace - this cousin's girlfriend's had a son, the other cousin's wife is due a boy any day now and we're having The Lad!

rocketleaf · 13/03/2011 07:42

I would like to use my dads mothers name as a middle name but it's root is the name of TBs black sheep of an older sister so I don't think that'll happen. So I think we are going for a very traditional English name which is the same as my favourite monarch, one of my best friends and one of my favourite fictional heroines.

I am not impressed with being wide away at 6.30 am on a Sunday WTF?
