Old colleague of mine had GD and ended up on insulin. She had a very healthy baby girl and looked absolutely amazing once it was sorted out. The most glowingy pregnant woman I have ever known.

Scorpette · 04/03/2011 17:26

I like stories like these Grin Cheers, Musingtons.

Medee · 04/03/2011 17:42

Afternoon all - properly catching up now.

Gaga great scan news.

Rocket very sorry to hear about your friend.

Cass sorry to hear you have GD, but sounds like it is under control.

Glad you are a bit calmer, Scorps, hope the weekend isn't too stressful waiting for Monday.

OP posts:
Scorpette · 04/03/2011 17:51

I'm not having the test on Monday BTW, just big chat with consultant, lots more blood tests and a scan to check on The Lad's size and development. Expect to get lots of subsidiary appointments as a result; GT test, dietician, etc., etc.

How are you feeling, Medjooldates? 8 days until your dd, eeeeep! (Am sure you don't need reminding!)

Medee · 04/03/2011 17:54

fine, thanks, though a bit tired after a busy week. Hopefully quieter next week.

OP posts:
rocketleaf · 04/03/2011 17:58

cass sympathy from me on the GD too. It must be a ball ache but I guess you just have to deal with it the best you can, eh? You sound very prosaic about it.

score you know boo had GD too? miniboo is absolutely fine and as far as I know it didn't affect him during the pregnancy/birth. Certainly not after anyway, gorgeous boy! Glad you are feeling a bit better about it today.

HighPriestessBoo · 04/03/2011 21:11

Scorps I'm so sorry I asked the question and then didn't come back. Reason I asked is because I had it too (as Rocket said), and I wanted to reassure you that it was all ok. Sorry to hear it got you too Cass.

I managed to control it with diet to start with but ended up having to inject insulin as my placenta's ability to suppress insulin got stronger. I had been really worried about having to do that but in the end it was really easy. The hardest part about finding out for me was kissing goodbye to my home birth and coming to terms with the possibility of being induced. But it was all fine. There was a dramatic end to my labour but that was nothing to do with my GD. Ask any questions you like, both of you, am happy to help if I can.

Ice Cream certainly wasn't on my listfrom the hospital! But what I was told is that if you add milk or cream to something that it brings down the GI of the whole meal so as I was heavily pregnant at Christmas time I was eating Christmas pudding with cream on occasion with no ill effects on my readings :o

Hooray for scan Lady and for Rocket I'm so sorry lovely.

AlpinePony · 05/03/2011 07:23

My mum had GD with my sister and apart from her arriving 3 weeks early at the best part of 12lbs, she's fine - aside from being 100% pure bitch. My mum however went on to develop full-blown Type I diabetes which obviously she's had to live with since. But, lives a full life and is still horseriding at 65. Only "problem" being was that once the medical profession interpreted "diet" as "low-fat" as opposed to low-carb or GI-based - so in earlier times before she embraced this it was harder to control her insulin levels. One of the easiest ways to control it is to prepare your own food - but of course it's much easier simply to order from Ocado and buy ready-made stuff (although I can't imagine anyone does! Confused). Oh and it's kept my mum ridiculously thin - knees wider than your thighs anyone? Anyone? No, me either.

HighPriestessBoo · 05/03/2011 11:13

Alpy They have told me I have a 50% chance of developing diabetes within the next ten years, but type 2, not type 1. Could your Mum have already been diabetic and not known?

Scorpette · 05/03/2011 11:58

I luff you guys but can we not chat about people continuing to have/developing diabetes after pg? I have so many pre-existing health probs and feel so deathly at the mo that it's made me cry because it's so overwhelming. I really can't handle the stress of the thought of it; I know it's something I'll have to look at if I have GD but at the mo I can't bear it.

Like I say, I already follow a low-carb, low-GI diet with no sugar and prepare @95% of all my meals myself, so how I'm going to control it better through diet, I don't know. Too many probs to cope with for me at the mo (I also seem to have developed raging SPD overnight - can barely walk and am in massive pelvic and back pain).

AlpinePony · 05/03/2011 12:02

boo It's unlikely being as she was diagnosed when she went under 7 stone (she's tall and broad) and kept having to get off buses to quench thirst - and also when an "old skool" size 10 bikini (i.e., 34" hips) fell off her - but with Type I, it's just "one of those things" - total pancreatic shutdown - I'm don't even know if it was related to GD.

HighPriestessBoo · 05/03/2011 13:04

Yes I thought it was unlikely Alps. Sorry for any harm caused Scorps the last thing I want to be is unsupportive xx

CurlyCasper · 05/03/2011 14:34

sorry you're having such a rough time scorps. Just keep focussing on that thriving Lad.

Scorpette · 05/03/2011 16:57

No harm caused Boo :) Just feeling a bit delicate today (headache v bad). You're always supportive

Cheers, Gasper - he's certainly kicking up a storm, so no worries there. He has a full Saturday Night Fever routine going on this week!

PollyPoo · 05/03/2011 22:27

Scropey just popping in to give you a snog hug. You really are suffering, you poor love. Sad I know it will all be worth it when you are snuffling The Lad, but I am very Sad that you are having sooo many health ishooes. Glad to hear The Lad is booting you and the MW is taking things seriously. I am really hoping the worse case scenario doesn't come to be reality.

Karate chops to the rest of you. Hope the sickly ESH are recovering. Any news from Medee today?

Medee · 06/03/2011 11:38

Still here, Polly, nothing happening.

We went out last night for a lovely meal in a restaurant we've been wanting to try. Contemplated having The Sechs but were too full. So today I have been doing some gardening - knackered though so about to take a bath.

OP posts:
Scorpette · 06/03/2011 15:02

Sounds like you're having a lovely weekend, Medee. V Envy you can actually get in and out of the bath - I'd need the SAS plus a Sea Life Centre hoist. Same applies for The Sechs, I think Confused

Am feeling better today, having actually got a decent amount of sleep last night. My parents have also just rung to say they've bought me one of those long pillows, which is v nice of them, as I've been sleeping on the sofa as it's currently comfier than our bed (miss TYF - he's that rare man who doesn't snore (that often), hog the bed or wriggle)! We're doing a bit of a spring clean, working out how to re-jig and declutter the flat to make more room for The Lad and his stuff, the sunlight is streaming into the flat and then we're going to have a DVD slob-athon, followed by a roast chicken dinner (goose fat roasties - drool!). Life feels much better today :)

Big snogs hugs back to lovely Poo. I hope you're going from strength to strength, my treasure xx

Ahhh, fuck it - hugs for all (whether you want one or not!)!

Medee · 06/03/2011 15:43

Sounds like a good Sunday, Scorps.

I have buggered something gardening, am now hobbling about like an old lady/ very pregnant person.

OP posts:
rocketleaf · 06/03/2011 16:00

Right meds hot bath for you and NO MORE EXERCISE, capish?

Heloooo to poopants hope you are on the up and up.

Glad you are feeling better today score sounds like you have a lovely day planned. I've been having a lazy one too although earlier I made a very organised spreadsheet of all the stuff we've been given so far so I can work out when else we need to get. I had a lovely day of shopping and lunch with my of diffed friend her mum and MIL (they adopted me for the day) but restrained myself from buying too many baby cloths as I wasn't sure what we already had. So will have to go back some another time. Found that marks do bright coloured 5 pack of vests which was find of the day!!

The things I am finding frustrating are leggings, tights and socks, everything is sooooo pastel pink!! And loveitloveitloveit have pretty much sold out of all the funky bottoms. Luckily Sprout is going to be a summer baybee cos at this rate she will be sat there with bare legs for the most part.

Medee · 06/03/2011 16:06

Have had the bath. Am sitting on my arse at the computer while MrM goes to Sainsbury's himself.

Shopping sounds good, Rocks. I have shedloads of clothes, between what my BM gave me from her 3, the stuff my mum has bought and the things I have bought.

OP posts:
Muser · 06/03/2011 16:18

H&M are meant to be good for tights and leggings rocket.

Medee, don't overdo it!

rocketleaf · 06/03/2011 17:07

Yeah had a look in yesterday musical i found one set I liked but didnt have the right size, their other stuff is pretty good and the organic range is cool too so will prob be going back now I have my spread sheet Wink Anyway am currently lurking on ebay for some bundles!! xx

rocketleaf · 06/03/2011 17:11

get in! 2.80 for 8 pairs of socks :o

Medee · 06/03/2011 17:55

nice one. I do like Ebay.

I'm sorry but I have been up doing stuff again - reorganising the linen cupboard and then the baby's drawers, to get away all the clothes that were washed this week. I have reselected baby's hospital/ coming home clothes for packing in the hospital bag as well.

OP posts:
Scorpette · 06/03/2011 18:14

Step away from the housework, Medee! Or pop round and finish ours off, heh! If you have the energy and the urge then go for it, but don't push yourself; save the energy for the imminent major task.

Rocket, I have a similar (although not to do with pink!) prob with baybee kecks - all boy ones are vile pastel blue or grey or jeans/utility trousers. I have a particular 'thing' about babies wearing jeans and other clothes that mimic adult styles - can't they just look like babies?! - and hate those really boyish styles. The styles of adult male trousers they mimic are styles me and TYF hate on adults anyway (TYF rocks a kinda indie geek chic, being Cap'n Skakehips), so we really don't want to dress The Lad up all butch, yeeeuch. Am hoping my brother can get me some nice, simple trews from Amsterdam.

Ooooh, I forgot - American Apparel does nice baby leggings & trews in a good range of colours for a tenner. Their adult stuff really lasts and washes well, so could be worth a try: store.americanapparel.co.uk/babies-topsellers.html
