Am totally baffled by pushchair and car seat options. Every time I think I've decided on something I come across another review which puts me off. Am even starting to agree with colleagues and family that I spend too much time reading and researching these things.

My cousin is giving us a second hand Graco Junior baby car seat, guaranteed not in a crash. I then looked at Mumsnet reviews, and discovered www.mumsnet.com/Reviews/CarSeatsFromBirth/48-besafe-izi-combi-isofix and www.rearfacing.co.uk/ . This convinced me i wanted a rear facing car seat. For some reason although the BeSafe is sold as from birth, the manufacturers only recommend it from 6 months. So I thought "great, I'll buy a second hand Graco pushchair, use the Graco car seat at first and then my parents could buy us the BeSafe (they'd offered to buy travel system) to use 6 months+"

I then read various Graco pushchair (compatible with Junior Baby) reviews and discovered none of them were very good /popular. I also discovered this website www.carseatinfo.co.uk/index.cfm?sid=19086&pid=292365 which pretty much says there's not enough evidence for rearfacing being better; and that you should only have newborns in flat car seats, which the Graco isn't.

My brain hurts!

Firawla · 16/03/2011 16:39

wishwales i can't remember what i am! but 19+5 sounds similar to where i would be. i was feeling it before at night time when i went to sleep? but may have a bath later and see if i notice anything.

Anu3 · 16/03/2011 16:41

Firawla thats so kind Thankyou! Im in woodside Park but Holloway is not too far out i suppose! I d love to know more about the groups you mention!

Firawla · 16/03/2011 16:56

whereabouts is woodside park?? sorry my geography is crap.
well if you do happen to be in holloway come to north islington childrens centre cos it is the best one, so anything they run is good, much friendlier atmosphere than other groups

Anu3 · 16/03/2011 17:10

Woodside park is further up north from you - after muswell hill - Ill def look up the Childrens centre and come in one of these days - Thanks Firawla!

aStarWithHerOwnWays · 16/03/2011 17:37

Firawla "im not feeling much in the way of movements, i felt like i felt more before, which is making me a bit confused" - this is exactly what I've been feeling like the last week or so. It's been quietly stressing me out, so it's a relief to see that several of us have had the same.

wishwales glad everything is okay, the bleeding sounds scary.

Anu I'm in Sutton, otherwise I'd gladly meet up. In fact, if there are any other Sutton-ish Aug11ers who fancy getting together, let me know - I haven't lived here long and don't know anyone!

MrsVidic · 16/03/2011 18:04

Wishwalesglad you're ok! Must have been scary, bed rest can be frustrating,I reccommend DVD box sets! Fringe is good or true blood?

anu I was exactly the same before dd, they show you how to bath on the labour ward and the nappy too!

I keep feeling baby kick, Dp has felt it too, I'm 20 weeks tomorrow and it's going very fast! I think I feel the baby more as it's not been long since I was pregnant last time so my I recognise it! Try lying in bed and roll over you may feel something then?

Sure start centres are also fab places for nappy info, ours had a free scheme for recyclables, I didn't use it though as I did the disposable route!

If your planning to breast feed most pumps come in a sterilising box with a bottle and teat included. To be honest this is all I needed and never used the bottles and massive steriliser I bought, had I have known I would have saved a hundred quid!

Firawla · 16/03/2011 19:20

anu if you do come in for anything there you will probs see me, cos i am nearly always there.

mrs vidic thats why i thought i would be still feeling it a lot too because i have spent quite a lot of my time pregnant lately, less than a year between each but now i'm thinking maybe cos one of my ds keeps sleeping in my bed so i dont have that chance to lie still and notice it? was noticing it mainly at night when i go to bed. anyway it will be nice to see on scan if everything is okay, would be a bit of reassurance.

KLou111 · 16/03/2011 19:47

Thank you for the compliments lol, but so want a bump :)

Sorry about your back probs Selina, hopefully you'll be able to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the nappy advice littlemissw. Don't think will buy any til little one is born TBH, as found out someone I know works for Huggies lol, so he's sending me a big pack, so a least I'll have something to keep us going. The nappy lady has recommended Little Lamb's so will look into that.

Littlemisslozza glad you're happy with your Jane. I think the only difference is that the chair can now be reversed so baby either facing you or facing away, which I really want the ability to do :)

So sorry about your scare Wishwales totally feel you. Been for 3 scans now instead of the normal 1 due to bleeds early on, and a couple of weeks ago. It's so scary, but hopefully your mind is now more at ease seeing your little one again :)

6 days til next scan Grin not that I'm counting tee hee

littlemisslozza · 16/03/2011 20:26

KLou The forward/rear-facing option sounds great. The only thing I was disappointed about with mine was the Matrix car seat but I see that they have changed it slightly. I found it was very heavy, too upright so baby's head would loll forwards and even though they said it could last until 18 months there was no way that it would have for my two as their legs would have been incredibly squashed, it wasn't long enough at the bottom. We actually bought a Strata car seat second time round as it was so much lighter and fitted in our car much better. I still used the Matrix to make the pushchair a pram though. The actual pushchair is fantastic though! I would recommend filling the tyres with a special gel that repairs punctures as they are inevitable. Halfords sell it, I got some off ebay too. WHat colour have you gone for?

majormoo · 16/03/2011 21:48

wishwales-glad all ok now. scary experience.

littlemissw-I use those bath seat things instead of a big baby bath and would agree they are much better.Bryher you just put them in the normal bath.

littlemisslozza-my middle child has just recovered from the pox and we had some dreadful nights with him itching all over. he was back at nursery today. hurrah

When I had my first I was terrified by the thought of all the bathing, nappy changing, feeding etc but it all comes together in the end

Had my 20week scan today and all fine. Did not find out the sex. Told the kids the news earlier and they laughed hysterically. My 7 year old was thinking through the prospect of maybe having to share her room so perhaps she will hope for another brother after all!

wishwales · 17/03/2011 09:34

All i want is a pushchair that is forward and rear facing, can lie flat and is comfy for newborn into toddler. Is that soooo hard?? It seems like it. Any suggestions?

alibaba76 · 17/03/2011 10:13

Hello everyone - I'm a bit late in joining, but better late than never!
I'm due on 14 August with my first baby, I'm 34 years old and come from Edinburgh.
Had a lot of nausea in Tri1, but that's over now thankfully. Been very tired, and that is still with me, but hey, I can live with that. Apart from getting regular headaches on Mon&Tues, I'm having an ok time.

Got my 20 week scan 2 weeks today and can't wait! Looking forward to getting to know you all xx :)

aStarWithHerOwnWays · 17/03/2011 10:26

wishwales my friend has a Quinny Buzz and really likes it, apart from the occasional flat tyre. It does all the things you ask, but worth checking if it will fit in the boot of your car (if you have one).

littlemisslozza · 17/03/2011 10:31

Hi Alibaba76! My 20 week scan is that day too, I'm due on the 15th with my 3rd baby.

wishwales Jane Slalom sounds like what you are after - although it is an 'off-road' style one (pneumatic tyres), great for country walks as well as in the town but maybe not what you want if you live in a city and rely on buses. I have one and I love it, my boys are so comfy in it too, and Klou has mentioned that they now do make it so that it can face forwards or backwards so even better! I'm not on commission, honest.....!

KLou111 · 17/03/2011 10:34

Welcom alibaba and congratulations!! :) We're all friendly here, and won't bite :)

Wishwales that's exactly what I've gone for in the Jane Slalom R Matrix light.
As Littlemisslozza was saying, they have changed the Matrix system now, and it completely lies flat (like a pram), then when baby is about 4 months, you can convert it so it is slightly more upright. Both these can be put straight in your car as a car seat so you haven't got to disturb baby if sleeping. Also the pushchair is forward and rear facing.

So glad your scan went well majormoo :)

Think I will still stick to a baby bath TBH. Our bath is quite wide and it takes an age to just get an inch of water in it versus putting baby in the bath I've found. The one I have found has a build in bath seat support thingy so it's the same as those things you put in a big bath. And a bargain off Amazon for £10.99! :) and most of the reviews are good too.

KLou111 · 17/03/2011 10:35

I like the red one Littlemisslozza :)

littlemissw · 17/03/2011 10:45

littlemisslozza Have you tried 'Poxillin' for your lo's chicken pox? It is like a non-greasy mousse you put on 3x a day & doesn't dry their skin out like cammomile lotion. Pricey, but I found it a lifesaver! An anti-hystamine, like Puriton, will help them sleep better during the night while he's itching too. Hope he's better soon .... both mine had it at the same time & it was exhausting until I discovered Poxillin. Good luck!

KTisPG · 17/03/2011 11:54

Hello Alibaba

I'm not getting a baby bath this time either. They are just too difficult to fill up and empty IMO, although I'll think about the in-bath holder thingies. Still no further forward on deciding what to do about pushchairs so I'm going to leave that for now.

A friend of mine brought round a huge bag of maternity clothes yesterday so I feel like a new woman. Horrah Shamrock

Hey ladies, glad to know everyone's scans are going well.

I had a job interview today, and I have never wanted to look less pregnant in my life! (I'm 18+5 today and have quite a bump coming along!)
I had to hold in muscles that I didn't know I had! Grin Cutting it fine as well, as will start with them (if I get it) at 20+2 weeks, and will have to tell them within 4 weeks that I am preggers! I think I'm going to tell a fib, and say that I didn't know that I was expecting, went to the Dr's feeling poorly, and OMG I'm 20 weeks+!!! (I'm going to go to hell! Grin)

Wouldn't have gone for the job, but it'll double my (non-existent) salary, and I started my current job at 6+weeks, so won't get SMP from current employer anyway.
DH is convinced that I'm mad, what do you guys think?

wishwales · 17/03/2011 12:13

Thank you for the Jane recommendations but I couldn't even come close to paying that price! Wow! Any other options??

Leilandri · 17/03/2011 12:18

Hello and welcome alibaba :)

About baby baths. I bought one last time for £3.99 from ASDA, very basic, but did the job. Filled it with the shower head, which gave a lovely even temperature so no scolding spots, and it had a plug at the bottom so I left it to drain while putting DS to bed :)
Something that helped in the first few weeks for reasurance was this: www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/sp+Baby-Bath-Float+A3065
which fit inside the baby bath, and helped to keep baby's head out of the water so I had a free hand to wash etc. I hung it over the taps after bath, and it dried out quickly.
When DS got older, 4months+, I bought this: www.mothercare.com/Mothercare-Aqua-Pod/dp/B0011EZ9WS?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_1&nodeId=42764041&sr=1-1&qid=1300364290&pf_rd_r=093CK73WAXCQHN4S7AM7&pf_rd_m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=0&pf_rd_p=231490887&pf_rd_s=center-7
which was fab, and will be using again when I have 2 little boys getting me soaked!!

MrsStevo · 17/03/2011 12:43

Hi alibaba! you won't know this as you're a newbie, but new people have to go to the back of the queue to have their babies I'm afraid. I don't like new people coming in and having due dates waaaaaay before mine!!! Grin Congratulations though! There are a lot of us first timers on here, but also lots of people who've had babies before so know what they're talking about, very helpful!

All this talk about nappies has got my head hurting. I'm trying to keep up, but I haven't even THOUGHT about the type of nappies we're going to use. As in, i haven't even decided whether to go with disposable or washable. I think with two, the washing might get a bit ridiculous, but the cost benefit might make it worthwhile. I don't know! Help!

Someone said the other day that they have days when they don't feel pregnant at all. I'm a bit like that at the moment. Although I have an obvious bump now (am 17 + 2) I keep thinking it has deflated a bit and get a bit panicky! Fortunately my godsend of a doppler keeps me sane and I've taken to listening to the heartbeats every day. Which is all very well and good whilst they are there, but if I couldn't find them I think I would go into meltdown immediately.

On the baby bath debate, we're going for the ergonomic support thingamys in the bath. Makes much more sense to do it that way when there's two of them I think. Although we too have a super wide - super deep bath (which is just amazing at the moment with the back and feet ache I'm getting) so it will take about a day to fill to the right height!

Vis a vis the bump thing, I haven't felt any movement yet but do get a feeling of massive pressure every now and again. I feel like I might actually pop rather than expand sometimes. Am I alone in this weird sensation?

Managed to lose 3lbs last week despite arrival of bump. I have been poorly sick with flu and then some kind of D&V thing though so i guess that's it. Puts my total gain so far at about 5lbs.

Happy St. Paddy's day by the way! Shamrock

RugbyWidow7 · 17/03/2011 13:01

Hello everyone and welcome Alibaba!

I'm loving reading all this pushchair and pram info, as it's great to read what everyone else is thinking of buying or already has.

On the bath front, a friend recently recommended that we don't get a traditional baby bath as they're cumbersome (sp?) but get one of these from John Lewis. Has anyone had one?

Yesterday I had a bit of a fright. I was driving back from a friend's house and started to get a twinge in the [ahem] groin aread. I then got out of the car and got terrible shooting pains right across my groin around the pelvic area. I was frozen on the spot outside the house and then managed to limp in. V strange! Worried me a bit,as I've read about the pelvic conditions (can't remember what they're called) and really hope I don't get that. Oh the joys Confused

RugbyWidow7 · 17/03/2011 13:09

Funny MrsStevo.

Why o why am I the only person in the world who eats their way through illness, so when other people can at least come out of the other side looking slimmer, I'm puffed up! Pah! I'm starting to feel slightly better but my waistline isn't! Interesting though MrsSteveo, as I wasn't sure whether our bodies would lose weight during pregnancy, or if they'd hold on tight to any weight gain as a protective mechanism (if you see what I mean)
