Will try that Kate, was trying to work out if I could use it the other way around :)

Teladi · 16/02/2011 11:50

Thanks everyone for your advice re lactulose - I was hoping to avoid going to the GP as I've had an antenatal appointment of some sort almost every week lately, and I've been late to work a lot because of puking etc. Work have been fab and would be fine about me going to the GP but I live quite far from work and that is where my GP practice is... I feel a bit bad. I know prescriptions are free, but I don't mind paying over the counter for the moment. I am still 'going' most days, so its not a crisis or quick fix situation yet, but I just want to try and get myself regular before I have any real problems.

I'll see how I go with the fibre etc and if it gets any worse I'll pop over to the GP.

daisysair · 16/02/2011 12:21

you can go into a pharmacy and buy lactulose, but I know when I bought it it was kept behind the counter (doesn't mean you need a prescription!)

CappuccinoCarrie · 16/02/2011 13:38

rugby fwiw I think you did the right thing, and having been the person sobbing on the other end of the phone, it would take me about a week to get over the upset of it not being me, and to just be really really happy for the other people. I still find it hard when people conceive quickly, but I've now got beautiful children and another on the way so I know I've just got to get over it!

teladi do you have problems with being bunged up when not pg? I've found a huge difference between eating white bread (bungs me up) and eating wholemeal/brown. Also a bowl of fruit and fibre really helps! I was prescribed lactulose after having DS to give my piles a chance to heal Blush

Teladi · 16/02/2011 14:42

Carrie, no I'm usually a once-a-day kind of girl, it's not something I've really experienced before. I'm already a brown bread eater but maybe fruit and fibre is the way to go, I have got some all bran to mix in with my cereal while I finish the box :)

RugbyWidow7 · 16/02/2011 16:14

Thanks Cappuccino and sorry to hear about your problems, but it's really helping me get a grasp on things. THank you.

Teladi I had this problem earlier on and still do occassionally. It's such a pain, literally! I have found that drinking fruit juice each day, eating lots of veg, having a fibre-rich cereal for breakfast and cutting back on all bread has helped me. Hope you get to the bottom of it (sorry!!!) sort it out soon.

Rozeeglow · 16/02/2011 16:42

Maybe I should consider lactulose - Im in week three of no movement BlushShock but then I have been very sick so not a lot is going through my system.

nickstermum · 16/02/2011 19:05

Apple juice has the same effect as lactulose.. prune juice also. Nuts also if you eat too many can help......

You can get lactulose over the counter, i got it for my toddler.. not that i have had to use it... Apple juice worked Grin

Right really need to catch up x

15+ 3 today..... how did that happen?!

MrsVidic · 16/02/2011 19:34

Hello ladies,
Oats have a positive effect on bowel movements- I switched to porridge for breakfast and I'm now twice a day from once every three!

LadyGoneGaga · 16/02/2011 19:38

I can also vouch for the efficacy of prune juice! And eat Bran flakes every morning. Lots of fruit too - but it is the prune juice that really makes the difference when bunged up.

LifeOfKate · 16/02/2011 20:18

Fybogel should be fine if you're not in immediate need of relief :)

MrsStevo · 16/02/2011 20:27

Whilst we're sharing bowel-movement tips, I recommend hot water and fresh squeezed lemon juice 1st thing in the morning. The lemony-ness is very fibrous and the hot / warm water gets things moving. I also second what others have said about bran flakes / fruit& fibre and also fresh fruit - grapes in particular seem to work well for me :)

Have had the BEST day, NT scan this afternoon so got to see my wriggling little beauties. I couldn't believe they had proper fingers and toes, one of them stuck their tongue out and the other was waving! We could see their spines too - just amazing. Took about 30 minutes for them both to sit in the right place so they could take the measurements so we had 30 minutes of seeing them! Amazing! Have now done the facebook announcement too so it is all starting to feel real! Have put a pic on my profile now - apparently we were really lucky to get one of them together like that.

Sorry, very self-centred post indeed, but I'm SO happy Grin !!!!

wheresmytractor · 16/02/2011 21:34

Ahh... MrsS thats great Smile

Back to bums...i'll second the prune juice but DON'T overdoo it, i did that after ds2 was born and was on the loo for about an hour! Grin

annie I am the same ALL I do is eat! and I am still feeling rough and rubbish. Need to stop stuffing my face, i'm gonna be MASSIVE!

Yukana · 17/02/2011 10:45

Aww that is lovely MrsStevo! That must've been such a wonderful experience. I'm eagerly awaiting my 20 week scan in 5 weeks, the excitement over here is almost uncontainable!

I enjoyed reading your (not) self-centered post! :)

As for me, I've almost fainted twice in the past few days whilst in shops. Once in Primark where they had to get the first aider out, and second yesterday in a local shop at the till. My footsteps grow slow and heavy, my vision gets progressively blurrier and my head feels light, I find it difficult to think.
Does anyone have any experience of fainting/the above during pregnancy? Would you suggest anything?

Yesterday I went to my midwife appointment and got to listen to the baby's heartbeat, it was magical. The baby kicked the doppler twice! It was sweet and I found myself with a big smile.

RugbyWidow7 · 17/02/2011 10:54

So lovely to hear about your scans / doppler experiences. And great to have twins on the thread MrsStevo! Grin

LadyGoneGaga · 17/02/2011 10:56

Lovely, MrsS - glad all went well and fab you got so long to look at them!

I had really bad dizzy spells, Yukana but bit earlier in the pregnancy. Is your blood pressure on low side? How's your iron? Are you eating enough? Could be any of these things. Just make sure you get up slowly and if you feel faint try and sit down quickly. Make sure you are snacking enough so blood sugar isn't dropping and might be worth having something like Spatone to boost iron up a bit. Lovely you got to listen to baby's HB!

Teladi · 17/02/2011 12:18

Hi Yukana, I have been a fainter for many years (I am chronically ill). It can be scary, so I can relate.

Top tip from me is just to get onto the floor as soon as you feel weird. Don't feel embarrassed, just go ahead and do it - this will likely stop you actually becoming unconscious, and will also help with prompt recovery. Eat regularly. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and also make sure you are getting salt... most people have plenty of this in their diet but if you are one of the ones who does not - this will help.

In terms of underlying cause, I would have a chat with your doctor if this is becoming a regular thing just so they can make sure everything is ok - it is very common in pregnancy though.

dundeemarmalade · 17/02/2011 13:06

I'd echo that. I used to be a regular fainter, and still do sometimes. I found it helped to remember that the reason for a faint happening is usually that your brain needs more oxygen/blood and so your body gets you to put your brain lower than your heart by making you fall over. If you can find a place to sit/lie and let that happen you should stay conscious. I'd also repeat what others have said about keeping your blood sugar levels stable: try and eat some protein every meal and don't go too long without eating or drinking some fruit juice or a smoothy. the fruity innocent ones are fab for giving a quick boost without making you feel gross.

Hersetta · 17/02/2011 13:12

Well done on the great scan MrsSteveo.

had my first community midwife appointment this morning and took DD along who helpfully told the midwife 'My mummy's done a wee in a pot'...at leat she didn't tell the rest of the waiting room!

We heard the baby's heartbeat on the doppler so was very happy. Don't have to go back for 9 weeks so next appointment is my 20 week scan in 4 weeks time.

Teladi · 17/02/2011 13:42

dundeemarmalade how are you feeling by the way? I remember you saying you had had to book time off because you were so pukey, are you feeling better now or is it continuing the same?

dundeemarmalade · 17/02/2011 13:55

thanks for asking teladi. am mostly okay but was dry heaving into the loo yesterday. have been sick or nearly sick every wednesday now since new year. wierd.

generally feeling much better - so much so that I am mid-way through sanding down and finishing our lovely new sideboard! bring on the power tools...

minicorrect · 17/02/2011 14:37

Mrs S - great news on the scan - so lovely that you got to see them for so long - sometimes them being little buggers can be a good thing Wink

Yukana - only fainted once in my life (during a barium enema LOL!!) but have had the occasional dizzy spell. Agree with what others have said so far - maybe keep some snacks with you (raisins are handy) for sugar hit if you feel light-headed.

Also want to second the grapes recommendation for getting things moving - half a bunch and I'm sorted!

Had midwife appointment today and she very kindly told me I was tiny which was lovely as I feel huge with my food baby!! Briefly heard the heartbeat before spud (craving potato salad) moved away, but the placenta was loud and clear. All good and one happy mummy to be here!

Firawla · 17/02/2011 16:00

aww that sounds lovely to be able to see them for so long mrs stevo, also must be so cool to see two of them in there together!
yukana that sounds quite scary poor you

KLou111 · 17/02/2011 16:44

So glad all of you are having fantastic scans/doppler experiences. Can't wait to be able to hear our little one a week today woohoo!! Can't believe I am 15 weeks today, the time has flown!

Still not got a scan date through yet so am a bit :( about that, but will ask next week if haven't heard.

Re the bunged-upness, thankfully I haven't had a problem (yet), but I have muesli/fruit n fibre/rice crispies every morning (depending on what I fancy) and a glass of OJ or apple J, and eat lots of fruit, and it has been good for me so far.

Re the faintness, I am getting it quite often at the moment, but think I have been getting up too quick on most occasions, and the other times are first thing when I get out of bed, so haven't eaten.

Can't seem to find your pictures MrsStevo, would be lovely to see the 2 little uns :)

LifeOfKate · 17/02/2011 16:46

Mrs Stevo - brilliant news, but you need to activate your profile so we can see the picture.... I want to seeeeeeee! :o

Yukana - I am a serial fainter, I know what it's like :( Last pregnancy was terrible, I spent a lot of time lying on the floor of my office Blush Thankfully not working this time :o They thought mine was due to low blood pressure, not a huge amount you can do about it, I just used to make sure I laid down as soon as I felt funny, although it can definitely be hard in shops! I ended up doing all supermarket shopping online last time and doing all baby shopping when DH was with me, so not quite so embarrassing when I had to sit down in the middle of a shop!
