Hi Mummy, I had the GTT on thurs as my dad is type II diabetic. It wasn't enjoyable, but definitely nowhere near as bad as I thought it'd be. My test was at 9.30am, so I was allowed to eat until midnight the night before, I had a bowl of weetabix with some blueberries at 11.55 because I was fretting that i'd be starving :) had my first blood test and she took a second lot for my iron (I think) level while I was there. Then I had to drink just under a bottle's worth of original lucozade. She said I didn't have to down it in 1 go, that I could drink it slowly over 5 minutes and out of a cup rather than the bottle if it made it less gassy (it didn't, I burped like a trooper!)

Then I could choose to wait for 2 hrs or have DP pick me up,, but I had loads of uni work to do and was a bit scared of being poorly so decided to sit it out. I had a bottle of water to sip from and didn't begin to feel poorly until there was only about 20mins to go. As soon as she took the second lot, I troughed down the little pack-up of pasta that I'd made and felt fine (which is a shame because I quite fancied giving myself the rest of the day off of work!)

Am in 2 minds whether I'd bother if I am pregnant again - on the one hand, I've not shown any symptoms or had sugar in my urine so far BUT it was more inconvenient than traumatic although I had been whittling about it for days beforehand. I'm sure the decision will be made for me when I get the results whether it was worth it or not.

Sorry you didn't find a dress you like, is there a tiffany rose stockier near you. Was having a look on their website for a birthday dress and there's some pretty ones on there, 'as worn by Emma Bunton, Holly Willoughby and Mykleene Ass' :) read that on here the other day and have been DYING to say it!

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend. I'm in the bath with a box of Roses - heaven.

motherofsnortpigs · 05/03/2011 22:08

mn2 going shopping and finding nothing to buy when you have a NEED to spend some money is very very annoying. I hope the websites come up trumps. It may be worth ringing them and explaining your situation. Can you find a website with free returns, then order loads of stuff and send back everything that doesn't fit/suit?

I'm with you almightycitrus on doing what I want to do and not what someone else thinks is best for me in my brainless pregnant state. I capitulated to routine blood tests because I felt really weird for a few weeks. I then realised that living entirely on digestive biscuits was almost certainly to blame. Oops.

daisy Mmm - bath and chocolate. It doesn't get much better than that. I must have a bath at some point (I usually shower) and test out birthing positions. I had DS in the bath but had my right leg slung over the side - it wasn't very good for my ligaments.

jasmine it does sound like you're getting SPD-like pain. I have resorted to wearing a massive tubigrip over my hips and then doing my belt up over them as tight as I can. (See I even do my own physio - when, with 3 DC's in tow am I ever going to find the time to go?) Have hurt a lot less since starting this regime on Wednesday.

I took DD2 to her drama club in posh Henley this morning and spotted that their NCT sale is next week. Must be worth a little look even though I know I need nothing. We spent the rest of the day at Didcot Railway Centre enjoying our Day Out With Thomas (this is why we are all members of the Great Western Society). As usual we had a great time, but boy was it cold. Far sighted DH had relaid the fireplace ready for our return. Which was just as well as the boiler had tripped off while we were out.

I'm now enjoying the last bit of the fire while DH does a late night stroll to our little Tesco's. I can no longer make this journey because the main purpose of the trip is to get 8 pints of milk and I just can't carry that much all in one go anymore - shame.

Hold on, I can hear some ice cream calling me from the garage - I'd better go and put it out of its misery. Night night

Clarkiee · 06/03/2011 10:23

Morning,

Feel like I've got some of my 'bloominess' back. Went out for a few mocktails for my mates birthdays and got lots of compliments saying I looked lovely (the touch of fake tan and lots of cover up helped me thinks). I stayed out till midnight- just before everyone got really drunk.

I didn't know about the glucose test- under what circumstances would you have one?

6 weeks to go at work- trying to stop myself having a ongoing count down (but I can't help it).

NurseSunshine · 06/03/2011 11:19

You would have a glucose test if you've had glucose in your urine on more than one occassion or if you've got a family history of diabetes. Glad you're blooming Clarkiee :) Midnight is about my limit as well.

MotherofSnortPigs will you be having this one in the bath as well do you think? I don't think everyone would fit in my bathroom but it would make a great, cheap alternative to a birthing pool which I don't think I will be able to afford.

Daisy I am very jealous of your luxurious bath and roses. Nearest I get to that is a shower with my chocolate scented showergel Grin

loueytb3 · 06/03/2011 12:02

Quick post from me, am meant to be supervising roast dinner cooking...

mummynumber2 I'm sorry about the shopping trip but I know exactly what you mean about lots of the dresses making you look like humpty dumpty. Was going to suggest having a look at isabella oliver if you haven't already. I've got a big do in early May and have just bought a really nice dress from there which makes me feel like a million dollars. The wedding plans sound really fab Smile

clarkiee I seem to be suddenly blooming too. About bloody time (23 weeks). Thought it wasn't going to happen this pg.

bananarama childminders are definitely cheaper. I had a nanny to begin with my DTs but then switched to a CM when they were 3 and it has saved me loads. The thing with nannies is that you have to pay their tax and NI and employers NI on top of their salaries. So while they might sound cheaper, they are ususally not. There are pros and cons either way, but my nanny in the end was off sick a lot so we switched. You don't have to have a certain number of days with a CM either. There are usually lots who can fit in children for a day or two, especially if you are flexible about which day.

nursesunshine GTT in our area is given to all over 35's as well as those at risk because of glucose in wee. So I didn't have one last time, but this time round because I'm positively ancient I have to have one.

Bought my first baby thing yesterday - pack of funky sleepsuits and hats from next. I decided that even though we have loads of stuff, I wanted this baby to have a new outfit to come home from the hospital in. Plus it was really cute Blush Am going to have to resist buying stuff otherwise DH is going to hit the roof!

Thanks nursesunshine. Glad to hear that you last till midnight too (like Cinderella Grin). My friend who had a baby last year was really suprised that I even came out, she said that she wouldn't have at my stage!?! I hate missing out on anything though, plus I felt fine (apart from the really busy bar).

Glad to hear you are blooming louey. I'm expecting my blooming to come and go (before its gone forever in a few weeks).

Went to my first antenatel class- hmm Hmm was okay. I wouldn't bother if I'd already had a baby. They went through pain relief and what to do when your waters break (which prob aint gonna be relevent, as I'm pretty sure I'll be given a date). No sitting on the floor leaning against DH and breathing Grin. Can't make next weeks- which is a tour of the hospital but the week after its breast feeding, bathing etc which could be handy.

Louey hope you don't mind me asking some 'twin birth' questions, were you given a date to be induced and if so how many weeks were you?

takethatlady · 06/03/2011 15:34

mummy your wedding plans sound lovely. Sorry you didn't find a dress yet. Have you looked at Asos? They have quite a wide selection on there (much better than the shops) including some dressier little numbers, and they do next-day delivery and free returns.

In my area (Cambridge) everybody has to have the GTT! I thought it was normal. This is the lucozade test, isn't it? At 28 weeks? I basically thought it was like the early blood tests and routine. But it sounds awful so I might try to get out of it!

clarkiee are your antenatal classes NHS ones? We were 100% resolved on the NHS ones and then we were just in Tesco's trying to spend our £70 of Clubcard vouchers on baby stuff and a couple with gorgeous sleeping four-week-old twins went by and struck up conversation with us and it was so helpful just chatting to them about what babygros we need and stuff that I suddenly had a change of heart and thought I wanted the chance to get to know some other parents in the same boat, and that the NCT classes might be the way to do it. We don't have any family nearby, nor any friends nearby who have children, so now I've gone and booked us onto NCT classes.

We shouldn't be spending the money, really, but the dad of the twins said we could get loads of stuff in the NCT sales for next-to-nothing, so maybe we'll save there. And we resisted the temptation to go to a hotel with our Clubcard vouchers and instead bought an electric steriliser with six bottles in it, some newborn socks (so cute), and a baby bouncer thingy. Not sure if any of those things are strictly necessary, but it's £70 saved in my book!

tinyk · 06/03/2011 15:57

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-time 'lurker' and catching up on all your chat has become part of my end-of-day ritual. What a relief to hear about everyone else feeling tired/emotional etc. etc! It's really helped make this first time mum feel much calmer and happier (I'm due a boy on 30 June). What has made me finally post? Like some others on this site we're in the process of moving, and I've had such a hilarious day packing up the house I had to share the lighter side of moving!! Just a warning: in order for this funniest episode to make sense, there's a slight TMI in here....

So, just to explain yesterday, I managed somehow to rupture a blood vessel in my nose. By sneezing. And we had to go to the hospital as after an hour I still hadn't stopped bleeding. Yes, really. I spent an hour with my head over the toilet as blood literally poured out of my nose, and of course quite a bit of it fell all over my white top (it would be white, wouldn't it?). Oh, and there was blood all over my pillow and sheets of the bed as I'd just put myself down for a bit of a nap. Nice.

So everything repaired (but warned not to sneeze, blow my noze or have any really hot or really cold drinks for 48 hours) this morning we started packing up again. The cat is really enjoying having us both around the house and spent her morning going out to visit my husband who was doing things in the garden and then racing in to see what I was doing in the bedroom, and then back, and then forth, and then back, and then... she decided to get really involved in whatever it was I was doing. What was it I was doing, bending over the tub? And scrubbing something? Something white with red blobs on it? Oh, better get in there to find out... aaaaahhhh! It's wet! The bathtub is full of water! (is there a scared cat emoticon?!?)

I've never seen a cat do a 180 degree turn so quickly. I don't know how, but despite having jumped fully into the tub, only one leg was wet. And I had to lie down I was laughing so hard. One thing this little guy will know when he comes out is his mum's laugh :o

The cat is so traumatized that she's taken herself to bed for the rest of the day.

Hopefully this makes some other people smile too and proves not all moving is traumatizing!!

Keep up the chat!

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 06/03/2011 16:20

Hi tinyk massive grin at your having to lie down from laughing so half. I would be PMSLROFL, but I'm I haven't got the energy for that.

Is there a ? there should be. They ca ditch the wine for it.

Must wake up enough to go and clean some windows

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 06/03/2011 16:21

laughing so HARD. Sorry, brain has shut down here.

Clarkiee · 06/03/2011 16:23

Hi tinyk I am also hoping to move house next month (I think we are all mad) Grin. Nose bleed sounds awful- and something you could really do without! Your poor pussy cat - ha haGrin!

Yes NHS one ttl. There wasn't much opportunity to get to know other mums, which is a shame. Hopefully your NCT ones will. I've been spending longer with a couple of friends who are also pregnant (and they have become better friends as a result). Reckon bouncey chairs and sterilizer are pretty important and mini socks are an inexpensive 'cute' treat x

Clarkiee · 06/03/2011 16:25

Woah nomorechoc what on earth does PMSLROFL- stand for? Grin and sod the windows do them another day and put your feet up!

cameli · 06/03/2011 17:54

Clarkiee it means piss myself laughing roll on floor laughing :)

jasmine51 · 06/03/2011 18:19

mother have just spent the last 5 hours doing a geocache route locally that should have taken 90 minutes! Dont think thats going to do my foofaa any good is it? Do hot baths help spd or should I sit on an iced water bottle instead?

  • hello, welcome to our aimless chat

Clarkiee and Nurse - I was out til midnight too...felt really naughty. Didnt enjoy dressing for comfort not for speed though...and the heartburn after the meal...sheesh!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend x

moomin156 · 06/03/2011 18:29

Evening all......welcome to the 'lurkers' that have finally decided to join us :)
Been my dads 70th birthday this weekend so had a lovely family meal.....i managed 1am!! a lot of drunken people around except me and me neice who is 10 LOL
Have sorted work to finish at 32 weeks if needed, i still cant decide..... also spoken to HR about return to work. To claim all my AL will need to return to payroll before new financial year, i can carry forward 5 days only, but it will count towards my 3month required to claim back the mat leave.......so i reckon i will need to return for about 6 weeks physically ( part time) and im sure we must be able to sot something so i dont lose out on all that money.
DH is making home made chicken kievs....yummy :)

KaraStarbuckThrace · 06/03/2011 21:06

Evening all!

Grrrr DH keeps saying "girl, you huge" in the style of Moto Moto in Madagascar II. Shall I kill him?

8rubberduckies · 06/03/2011 21:35

Grrr Kara my dp keeps making a beeping noise like a truck reversing every time I try to turn over in bed! Thanks for the link to Pretty Pregnant Supersunnyday I have my eye on the green Belly Button dress after a little harmless glance on there! Hope everyone else has had a lovely sunny couple of days!

79monica · 06/03/2011 21:38

On the subject of NCT classes, there's a girl in my pregnancy yoga class who is expecting twins in June and is about to start going to twin specific NCT classes. Don't know if they do these in your areas Calgary and Clarkiee?

I am feeling very pleased with myself after a productive weekend. DH has almost finished clearing all of the junk out of the baby's room ready for us to start decorating (he told me to rest rather than help so I did as he suggested for once Smile) and I have just made our first baby related purchase - a moses basket with stand on ebay for £16. I am quite new to ebay but I can see how winning auctions could get dangerously addictive, my watch list is already full of maternity dresses and travel systems! Grin

Clarkiee · 06/03/2011 21:40

lol kara and 8rubber - your DP's deserve a playful punch (that hopefully hurts a tiny bit Wink)

Merlion · 07/03/2011 03:26

The diabetes test is routine here too. My Dad has Type II diabetes as well despite being generally very fit and never smoking and not drinking much throughout his life. I had the test with DS and was able to eat till midnight as well so wasn't too painful (but then I wasn't suffering from MS). The drink was disgusting though but understand that you are able to take normal lucozade so not quite as bad (they don't sell it here in any case).

DS having great fun informing everyone that we meet that 'Mummy has a baby in her tummy, and I have food in mine Grin'

8rd and Kara grrr to your DHs.

Mummynumber2 · 07/03/2011 07:51

Funnily enough supersunny I've ordered a long creamy, goldy dress from dress from Pretty Pregnant, I'll do a link when I'm not on my phone. They didn't have the right colour in the shop I went into but hopefully it should arrive tomorrow. Very successful shopping trip yesterday with dsc's. Dsd's have got lovely red dresses and dss a suit, he's insisting on wearing a red bow tie with it, he looks so sweet!

Hi tinyk I sounds like you've been in the wars! I hope your cat's recovered now. Grin

Mummynumber2 · 07/03/2011 08:07

I'm very impressed with everyone who's managed to stag out late, I'm pretty much always in bed asleep by 10 these days!

I don't know why I've been told I can't eat after 8pm when I have the GTT if the blood test's at 9.40. If I do decide to have it do you think they'll think it very strange if I bring my own bottle of lucozade sport to have instead of the fizzy stuff? I know how strange this sounds but I'm very sensitive to caffeine (there's a lot in the fizzy stuff and none in the still stuff) and it makes me shaky and sick at the best of times!

Happy Monday everybody! A week closer to the start of maternity leave!

Mummynumber2 · 07/03/2011 08:08

That's obviously meant to be stay out late, not stag! Grin Blush

KaraStarbuckThrace · 07/03/2011 09:07

Hooray for getting your outfits, Mummy!!
