Hey Crumble - I'm in southwest London. Sorry your line manager made you cry - you do need to take care of yourself. I agree with 8 and Barbie about taking that extended period off. Give them enough notice and they should be fine.

TTL - I actually think that it IS your business. Does your Dh realize how difficult it will be with a newborn to look after and commuting 2.5hrs/day? Hmm Perhaps if you sit down this weekend with him to try and find out what's really concerning him (is he worried that he may lose his current job if he applies to others?) it will help. My DH definitely responds to honey better than kicks :) Send you all my best!

Are any of you Ebayers? I've found it's become my new hobby since I can't go to the gym anymore. I'm up £427 since January and aiming for £1000 which should cover all the furniture and some other things for the twins nursery. (It's also lovely to get rid of junk things that are taking up needed space in our flat.)

8rubberduckies · 04/03/2011 13:43

calgary infinitely better advice for ttl than mine Grin.

I am not an ebayer, but should get into it really. Anything child-related I just take to a second hand children's shop which sells it for you and you split the money made 50/50. It's a lazy way of Ebaying, as someone else does all the work. I also find that when I pop in once every 2 months or so to collect my winnings earnings I end up spending it on more tat! I did pick up DS's winter coat for next year in there though last week - £5 for a like-new Next padded coat. It's in, ahem, quite a posh area on Bristol, so a lot of the stuff is pretty good quality.

takethatlady · 04/03/2011 13:49

Thanks 8rd and calgary! The discussions about this have been going on a long time now (since I got my permanent job in Norwich two years ago ... only actually started six months ago (long story) and I've been doing the car commute since then). We've talked it inside and out, upside and down, over and over and over again til we're both a bit sick of it! We're agreed that I can't do 2 1/2 hours in the car with a baby and we're agreed that the baby should go to nursery on campus where I work, which means we have to move closer to my work. Everything else is up in the air.

Basically he thinks 2.5 hours in the car to his current job is better than 1.5 hours on the train to a new job which will require a hell of a lot more work. A new job in teaching is pretty hectic because you have to plan all your lessons from scratch and teach lots of new things. So it will be a bit of a nightmare for him either way - a longer, driving commute but an easier job, or a shorter (still not short) commute on the train to a new job where he'll be needing to prove himself all over again. So I completely see that from his angle it's pretty tricky whichever way.

From my point of view the pros of moving outweigh the cons because it's a shorter commute, the train is better than the car, we wouldn't need to buy a second car and it saves our current car from lots of strain and cost, the potential new jobs are a step up career-wise and financially, and DH is looking to make a career move at some point anyway so it figures that now would be a good time. From his it's better the devil you know. Why are these things never simple?!

crumble that is so shitty about your boss. What an arse (even if he doesn't mean to be, he's definitely being an arse.) My line manager has been fantastic but did try to put me off taking holiday before maternity leave (and hasn't even approved it yet) because it's the exam assessment period. She can bugger off though - I don't want to go into labour 70 miles from home just to mark a few exams! I hope you get what you need :)

jasmine51 · 04/03/2011 15:35

I'm just joining in to say my DH is being an arse today - nothing more to say really...an arse of the largest flabbiest variety and I've turned off my Skype cos I dont want to talk to him!

takethatlady · 04/03/2011 16:10

Grin jasmine. In general is really really lovely, and he's an amazing husband and he'll be a brilliant father, but today I'm definitely with you in the my-husband-is-an-arse camp Grin

takethatlady · 04/03/2011 16:11

That should have said 'In general my DH is ...'

I have just eaten the slice of chocolate cheesecake he was saving for himself in the fridge, partly to get him back, and partly because I felt like being an arse myself Wink Grin

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 04/03/2011 16:31

I've just seen the words chocolate cheesecake and crumble with out even managing to read any thread content. So much for that large pot of hummous half an hour ago, now I want more food. Again!

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 04/03/2011 16:50

Crumble sorry to hear you're having a bad day. Did your line manager want you to go in with a dodgey tummy, do no work and make everyone else sick too?! It's not your fault you're sick and not your fault some of your co-workers are stupid enough to get themselves suspended. Hope you're feeling better this afternoon.

Hi Calgary nice to meet you. Come join the fun :)

jasmine51 · 04/03/2011 17:59

Ok so now we have chocbiscuits chocolate cheesecake and crumble all on the same page...my waistline is so screwed this evening.

knackered76 · 04/03/2011 19:16

Evening all!

Welcome Calgary :)

Sorry to those of you whose partners are being arses today. Jasmine I LOVE the fact you can turn your dh off, I want that ability!!!!!! Can't complain about mine today as he's been off for a couple of days to get the shared room sorted. He's spent the entire day making up the worlds biggest bunk bed (which we now can't move to where we want as it's too heavy!)and we now have 2 very excited children playing in their joint room . . . . no early night for us then Grin.

Mummy love the dress choice and the whole wedding sounds lovely:)

Crumble - Your manager sounds like an arse. Make yourself feel better by wishing eveil things upon him, containing mainly of the hugely embarrassing sort!

TTL Going with Calgary's advice on this one. A good old chat about the real issues is always helpful (that's providing it can be done without tears and shouting . . . .something I need to work on Blush).

Hmmm, there was other stuff I was going to say but now can't remember . . . . I shall love you and leave you all with the comment of the day from one of the pre-school leaders this afternoon when I dropped ds off "Good grief, are you sure there isn't 7 in there?". Now I know I'm not small, but surely I'm not <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=cdn.sheknows.com/articles/article-1142566-037e2712000005dc-944_468x646.jpg&imgrefurl=www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/807781/octuplet-mom-nadya-sulemans-pregnancy-photos&usg=__cD1zIZc0Gb9ZK4nXyfys-Nud7FY=&h=646&w=468&sz=80&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=IG-_5YiZJxkxCM:&tbnh=128&tbnw=106&ei=7jlxTbbEEo-7hAelrvE0&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doctuplets%2B26%2Bweeks%2Bpregnant%2Bpictures%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1B2RNFA_enGB266GB322%26biw%3D1440%26bih%3D665%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=124&vpy=46&dur=1167&hovh=264&hovw=191&tx=129&ty=163&oei=7jlxTbbEEo-7hAelrvE0&page=1&ndsp=32&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this big!

Mummynumber2 · 04/03/2011 20:16

Thanks for the tip off about Argos prams almighty there are loads of really cheap ones! I still can't decide what I want though!

Hi Calgary - wow more twins.

I hope you're feeling better crumble. What a horrible line manager. Angry

Jasmine- waistline!? I'm resigned to the fact that I'll never have one of those again. Grin

Mummynumber2 · 04/03/2011 20:22

Oh, wedding planning update. We've found a lovely restaurant quite close to the register office that do brunch. Went for a meal there last night (I ate and kept down fish pie!!!!) and have booked a table for 20. And I'm going dress shopping tomorrow.....

bananarama05 · 04/03/2011 21:02

nurse glad you're feeling better about that silly cows comments. I've taken a new approach and am quite enjoying peoples confused looks and clearly apparent unsureness of what to say when they point out how "massive" I am and I tell them I actually measured on the small side of average at my last mw appointment. I'm bored of smiling and nodding politely now. Angry

mummy your wedding sounds absolutely lush and exactly the sort of thing I'd want if DP was more romantic and felt marriage was in any way necessary!

Thanks for the points/cashback websites tips peeps.

calgary I'm having the opposite relationship with ebay at the moment and spend most lunchtimes sat looking for things to buy, it's become my new favourite bad habit Grin, so far the purchases have only included a £5 stairgate when we got our puppy and an £8 house phone last week but I'm sure I'll get something more interesting soon! My friend also pointed me in the direction of gumtree and friday-ad's this week both of which look not too bad for anyone that's not checked them out.

crumble I hope you're feeling a bit better now.

Has anyone else started thinking about what they'll do returning to work wise? I'm contemplating requesting cutting back to 3 days a week but just not sure if we'll cope money wise. I finally dared check out the cost of child care, wish I hadn't bothered now. Plan was bubs would go to my mum one day, DP's mum one day and nursery one day but all the nurseries round here have a minimum of 2 days a week which I guess makes sense for them but bugger it's expensive!

This week I'm mostly eating anything with sugar in which is most unlike me! Am currently sat working my way through a bar of Bourneville with a glass of alcohol free mixed fruit Gaymers Cider (my new favourite thing ever). I love Friday nights Grin

Mummynumber2 · 05/03/2011 07:01

Have you thought about a childminder bananarama? I think they usually work out cheaper than a nursery and I don't suppose they insist on any specific number of days. I'm actually thinking about becoming a childminder myself after I've had the baby.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 05/03/2011 08:29

Crumble - I hope you are feeling better today. What on Earth was he thinking, your boss? was he really expecting you to come in? He wouldn't be too impressed if then on Monday everyone was off with D&V Hmm He is clearly an idiot!!!

Knackered Shock at preschool leader's comment, how rude!!! What did you say?

TTL - I agree with Calgary, 2.5hour commute each way is going to take out a sizeable chunk of your DH's day. And he may be able to do some work on the train!!

Calgary - I am flogging some stuff on Ebay, mainly clothes of DS's and some nappies from my Lollipop kit (since I am not being an advisor any more!). Nothing in your league!

Mummy - sounds like your wedding plans are well underway! Have you ordered your dress yet? Have you decided on the blue?

Mummynumber2 · 05/03/2011 08:39

Just popping back to ask if anyone knows anything about the glucose tolerance test. I know you're having one nurse and I think someone else said they were? I'm supposed to be having one in a couple of weeks because my dad has type 2 diabetes. There's no other indications that I may get gestational diabetes. I'm thinking about not having the test, mainly because I'll feel really ill! It basically involves fasting from 8pm the night before, having blood test at 9.40 next morning then drinking glucose drink and waiting 2 hours for another blood test. That will be 16 hours with only a glucose drink. The problem is I still have ms and there is no doubt in my mind that i'll throw up after having the glucose drink (which I can't stand after throwing it up so much when I had very bad ms) and it will end up being a waste of time for everybody as they have to stop the tests if you're sick. I'm willing to give it a go if there really is a high chance that I'm likely to have gestational diabeties, but I'm just not sure that's the case. Does anyone know?

Mummynumber2 · 05/03/2011 08:42

X posts kara. I'm going dress shopping today! As we only have a few weeks I've decided not to order anything online as if it doesn't fit or I don't like it when I get it there might not be enough time to reorder/ find another one. Hopefully I'll be able to get the blue one, but I'll be trying a few on so may end up with something completely different!

cameli · 05/03/2011 09:13

I had the GTT yesterday mummynumber2 as my sister has been on insulin for 30+ years. In my last pregnancy I couldnt tolerate the drink and vomited but yesterdays was ok-not nice but I managed to keep it down. I felt ill & sick because I was sooooo hungry. I didn't get a phone call with the results yesterday so that means the results are fine.
I almost declined the test too but having been on metformin for PCOS for about 10 years and whenever I had a random glucose test they always came back high so I thought I better do it.

As I have only put on about 9lbs and I'm 28 weeks today I really didn't expect to have it.

HTH

bananarama05 · 05/03/2011 12:10

mummy I assumed childminders would be more expensive as smaller numbers, more 1:1 care etc, I shall have to investigate thanks!

Enjoy the dress shopping, hope you can get the blue one, it's lovely.

Sofa day for me. Meant to be at work but was up til 2am with stomach aches and a dodgy tummy which only started when I went to bed. Then when I got up at 8 for work had the same thing plus the start of a cold so decided the only place I was going was back to bed! Still feel rough, just trying to convince DP to make me some nice bland ill person food... he's more interested in the football at the moment! :)

Clarkiee · 05/03/2011 12:41

Hey, no time to read but want to book mark. Will catch up tomorrow-
Have a fab weekend girls xxx

AlmightyCitrus · 05/03/2011 13:12

I've not heard about having the glucose test yet, although I know some from my town who have had it done. TBH, I think I might refuse it. Partly because I can't eat anything, but mainly because they don't do it at my local health centre.

I live opposite the health centre, which is fairly new and modern, yet I'll be expected to go 10 miles on a bus, starving to get to a health centre in another town, then sit round doing nothing, still starving for another 2 hours. Stuff that!! I've never even been offered the test before, so I think I'll manage without it this time.
One of the advantages of being an older mum who's been there and done it all before...you are less shy of telling people to bugger off. Grin

crumbletastic · 05/03/2011 13:21

I'm feeling a bit better now everyone, although was up for a few hours in the night with intense stomach pains and(tmi)a fair few trips to the toilet, sounds like you're suffering similar banana hope you feel better soon.

Woot, super exciting about your wedding mummy, I got married at the end of October last year whilst 2 months pregnant, the morning sickness was atrocius but it was a brilliant day and I was happy I had arranged it all in just over a month.

autumnjoy · 05/03/2011 15:14

Checking in again ..months since I last did but read the threads every now and then.
Just wanted to say Jasmine I'm 43 too, due my first on 19th. Luckily nobody has said a word about my age yet! But they seem to be keeping an extra eye on me, extra scans etc. All well so far!
Haven't had a blooming stage yet!Probably too late for it now!

jasmine51 · 05/03/2011 16:14

Hello autumn - glad you are in the same boat as me. Maybe I just look my age and thats why they mention it at every bloomin opportunity..or maybe its just an easy thing to pin all the little anomolies on. How are you finding everything?

Had an energetic flourish to the day walking into the town to the postoffice and back again...since then have eaten the contents of the fridge, had a sleep and moaned and groaned at the effort of getting up again...feel like I've cycled a million miles....does anyone else feel 'saddle sore'? Is this spd?

Another night of watching everyone else drink tonight...oh and to make things more fun, they are going to be eating as well, but this must be at the only restaurant in the world that doesnt have a single pg friendly dish...think pate, blue cheese, soft quails egg, carpaccio meats. No biggy though, am about to stuff myself with a huge pizza...gotta carb up right?

Mummynumber2 · 05/03/2011 18:53

Well, I'm back from the mamoth shopping trip and it was a monumental waste of time and energy. We trapsed round half of London to find that that the very few shops that stock maternity clothes only really have jeans and a few tops. Tried on a few non-maternity dresses, which much to my sisters amusement made me look like an easter egg, humpty dumpty or a christmas tree fairy! Honestly, if you every fancy a laugh just try a few on Grin. It turns out the Crave maternity shop in Kensington has closed and although they do in online at John Lewis they don't have any maternity clothes at all in any of their shops. The only dress that even vaguely fitted me was quite nice but red and I'm not sure that's what I really wanted. So, back to square one and getting something online. I just hope it arrives in time and fits!

Thanks for the thoughts on the glucose test, I think they only suggest you have it if you're at a greater risk of developing gd almighty, so maybe that's why you haven't heard anything about it. The more I think about it the more I think that I'm not going to have it. Surely they can do a urine test first?

Nannies are defiantely more expensive bananarama but childminders work from their own home and most of the time are also looking after their own children and a few others which is why they charge less.
