Hello wise PESHers. Forgive me for rudely butting in.....I'm currently residing in the BESH skihut and wondered if any of you could help me please - today my lovely husband was told he has a low sperm count (hence no baybee win) - any thoughts on what we could do to help increase it?

Medee · 20/01/2011 20:07

I'm not sure what advice to give, Sunshine, but didn't want to leave your post unanswered. In our case, it was my lazy eggs rather than my other half that took all our time. I know there are certain vitamins and minerals, like zinc and selenium, but I am not sure if they just generally help sperm health, than specifically help a low count. I'm sorry you've had this diagnosis, but at least it is something to help you explain what is happening.

ChoChoSan · 20/01/2011 20:20

Hello Sunshine not had this issue myself, but found the website fertilityfriend.co.uk (I hope that's the right URL) to be really useful for more in depth info on diagnoses...good luck.

rocketleaf · 20/01/2011 20:55

Hey sunny, sorry you gave had this news :( I cant reply in detail right now but TB was also told this at our first sppointment, will send you a pm on this subject a bit later if that's ok?

PerfectDromedary · 20/01/2011 21:32

Poor Sunshine. It's a tough diagnosis - how low is his count? TNB and I were told that our only chance of conception was ICSI...and our miracle baby is due in five weeks, so I wouldn't give up hope. TNB took Wellman preconception vits, pycnogenol, and wheatgrass. He gave up hot baths and tight pants. He's never been a massive boozehound, but cutting down on drink and fags - if either applies to your bloke - will obv help. Would also suggest that swi too much with a low count can be problematic.

And remember, sperm counts can go up as well as down! Unless
they're talking about trying to find sperm surgically, there's still hope of a miraclediff.

Scorpette · 20/01/2011 22:17

Hi Sunshine, sorry to hear about your TTC woes. Has your DH been tested just once? I ask because experts say men should be tested several times to get a true picture, as the various levels of wotsits in their sperm can vastly differ from test to test (ie just going on a bender or having a short period of high stress could make levels temporarily low).

Second all the advice on cutting down on fags and booze (or cutting them out at all, if poss) and hot baths/showers and tight pants. Caffeine can also temporarily lower sperm count, so a can of coke to give him the energy for some quality TTC could be counter-productive, for example.

Unless it's vvv abnormally low, sperm count can be easier to work on than female issues, so take heart from that. As with Drom, several PESH have been told their menfolk have low sperm counts but have the bumps to prove it certainly doesn't mean the end of hope :) Hope any of this helps.

rocketleaf · 20/01/2011 22:30

I am too late now as drom and score have pretty much said what I was going to say. I know it's hard on blokes to be told something like tha, kind of questions their man hood even tho it's no ones fault.. TB struggled with it a bit although he rarely let on to me. There are loads of things that can be done as mentioned so all is not lost and one test defo is not conclusive,TBs count was alittle low - his problems were more with motility but his first test was after we had been on holiday boozathon and his second showed virtually normal after 3 months of clean living. Hope this helps a bit!

CluckyKate · 20/01/2011 22:51

The rib thing sounds horrible Cho - hopefully the cocodamol will fix but do watch for constipation. Codeine is oft prescribed to slow the bowel down, even in horses, so keep those fibre levels up.

Can't help on the stretchmark fron GaGa as I had tonnes of them last time - nasty, red, itchy ones they were. Not a sign of any this time though.

Picked up birf pool tonight so am almost ready to go now.....just need to replenish birthing snack stocks

InTheSunshine · 20/01/2011 23:35

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping that some of the reasons behind the low count might have been due to the test being short after a few booze filled Christmas days. Really appreciate all the advice. Hopefully one day I'll be one of the PESHers Grin

milanomum · 21/01/2011 08:46

Sunnyd have replied on BESH fred, but sounds like you've had some positive info from the PESH.

Gagagoogoo I read that stretchmarks have nothing to do with how much oil/cream/other stuff you slather on because it's entirely hormonal and there's no way of stopping them - you'll either get them or you won't. Helpful, aren't I?

Cho and scorps you both deserve an extra prize at the end of this! Sorry you're both suffering...

Kate all systems go then? Wink

owlbooty · 21/01/2011 09:43

Birthing snacks? Ooo. That sounds ace. A whole round of unpasturised stinky runny brie to bury one's face in plus plenty of saucisson to go with it.

Or maybe a jar of nutella and a spoon.

Medee · 21/01/2011 10:27

As far as I can tell, I?ve not got any stretchmarks. Whether that is down to luck or regularly slathering on moisturiser, I don?t know. What I do know is that I have completely forgotten about my legs till I was at the beautician yesterday evening for a waxing, and noticed how scaly they were! Luckily waxing also takes all that away too!

Had a better night?s sleep last night ? MrM used the massage thingie on my back during 10 O?clock Live, and got a configuration of pillows between 4-6 that seemed to work better, so shall try that for a full night.

MrM has strict instructions to visit our local cheesemonger shortly after the birth.

rocketleaf · 21/01/2011 10:33

I can't wait to have a brie and bacon sammich

4-6 pillows is impressive muse i only have 2 so far, can imagine it gets ramped up princess and pea stylee as bump gets bigger. TB is already complaining there isnt enough room for him, I wonder if that is why he is on the hunt for a replacement for the spare bedroom bed (which is a horribly uncomfortable futon.) :o

Muser · 21/01/2011 10:39

I have actually given up my pillows, my bump appears to be self supporting now. I did have my long body pillow, but now I just have a regular one between my knees/feet and that's it. I may have weird aches and pains during the day, but I sleep very well. Even the waking up to pee doesn't bother me, as even not-pregnant me normally wakes up once during the night to go to the loo.

rocketleaf · 21/01/2011 10:49

Sorry meant medee not muse Blush I knew the 5 letter Ms would get me confused at some point! I seem to have become used to the middle of the night pee trip too, it wasn't an unusual occurrence pre diff for me either.

Medee · 21/01/2011 10:54

I meant 4am-6am, only actually 2 extra pillows! Blush

rocketleaf · 21/01/2011 10:56

God I am slow today, how can you have between 4 and 6 pillows anyway? You would just have 5, I think maybe I should step away from the internet as I obviously can't read or be trusted to type anything coherent.

Muser · 21/01/2011 11:01

I didn't even notice you'd said muse and not Medee, rocket. So you're not alone in being a bit slow today.

Ivegotmrbitey · 21/01/2011 11:04

I am going to have a blue steak as soon as I have layed. Am now thinking about how I can get one in my hospital bag.... oooh and a cheese board full of stinky runny cheese.

LadyGoneGaga · 21/01/2011 11:07

Oooh, if I get my home birth I can get MrG to cook one as my first post-birth meal. Mmmmm. Maybe with Stilton melted on top. And some onion rings. And chips and a big mushroom. Well done steak is rubbish.

Ivegotmrbitey · 21/01/2011 11:18

well done steak is just horrid isn't it ladygonegourmet? Am Envy at home birth and steak plans. I am a big wuss so nervous about the birth that I really feel the need to be in a hospital for the first time round at least. Have hatched two cunning plans though:

  1. Take campervan to hospital, dispatch the foot dragging one to cook me a steak in the carpark. It will only take a minute after all! On the downside the camper will then smell like steak when we bring the baybee home in it.
  2. There is a pub accross the car park that has a steak grill, dispatch the FDH to buy me one and bring it in as a take away. This is probably a better plan than (1).
Muser · 21/01/2011 11:18

My big NHS book says you can have steak or other whole cuts of meat rare as long as the outside is properly seared. Nowhere else says this, so it confuses me a lot. I have gone off steak though, it makes me feel pukesome.

Muser · 21/01/2011 11:22

I am getting weird movement today. Lots of pressing down in my pelvis. I wonder if Bob is wriggling a bit further down.

OP posts:
Scorpette · 21/01/2011 11:40

Am here but sulking because Medee has no stretchmarks and is way ahead of me, whilst I look like I'm the only living victim of Jack The Ripper Envy

Am actually sulking because my headache came back last night and has remained. Is mildish but MEH. Am on the most hardcore thing they can give me and still it doesn't go? Bollocks Angry Keep worrying it might be fucking with The Lad's brain development - please can someone fishslap Teh Stoopid out of me, ta?

Muse, sounds like Bob is thinking about his endgame now. And he might stop tap-dancing all over your ribs if he gets lower down, huzzah!

I have a confession to make: I really like well-done steak. I mean to the point of almost being burnt. I like all meat slightly overdone. I realise I am a freak - please don't reject me! Blush

LadyGoneGaga · 21/01/2011 11:42

That is very good news Muse. I think someone else may have said this at some point (or could have been you thinking about it?) - something to do with the Toxplasmosis only able to get to the outside of the meat. Rare burgers a no, no though. I think last time I would have medium steak ok but this time am a bit freaked out by Toxo because of what happended to Spilt. Although I may have had it anayway as have two cats. Wish they routinely tested for it.

About a month to go for you, Muse? I expect Bob is assuming the position nicely.

Found out yesterday one of my friends from work is expecting - 3 weeks ahead of me. Her first so rather exciting. We walked to Mothercare at lunchtime yesterday. Although I hated evrything there. Apart from maybe a moses basket. Also having envy about prams -decided I don't like mine any more and would really like a fancy iCandy but this is rank stupiditiy and very unnecessary. Pliz tell me to stop being an idiot as will be in the Maclaren after 6 months anyway and mostly in the sling before that. May console self with a lovely new sling.
