I was just about to post to say sorry for starting the July thread and then disappearing, then saw that it was all full up! So I thought I would start us a new one.

Hello to all the many many ladies that have joined the July club - it's lovely to see so many of us here. I've been trying to read back through all the old posts, but there are so many, that's partly why it's taken me so long to get back! Have also been having some personal troubles, but that's another story.

Anyway, I'm 12 weeks today and slightly looking forward to my scan on Christmas Eve, but also nervous in case it's not good news. I'm looking forward to catching up with you all again and hearing how you and your bumps are going.

OP posts:

I know how you feel though with ds it was after I gave birth I had the shock! I had excruciating SPD, a back to back labour where I could not move at all as it was too painful. Ds was born, dh had a look and said, a bit faintly and incredulous, 'it's a boy'. I yelled 'what?' and sat bolt upright to check for myself!

I wondered as the pg had been totally different from the girls but as you say, couldn't imagine anything other than another girl.

This time, there's everything to play for! I now know that dh is 'capable' of producing boys but again, so far, this pg is very like the girls rather than ds so who knows!

I must admit I normally love the suspense but I'm not sure I'll be able to contain myself at my scan! I'm almost hoping dh won't be able to come so I can ask then let him think they let it slip... That's bad isn't it? I wouldn't really but the fact I've considered it is bad! Blush I'm so glad this is anonymous!

buttonmoon78 · 15/02/2011 22:09

Hi Jimmy - sorry, we x-posted!

It would be very unusual to get BH this early in a 1st pg but just like showing earlier and feeling movement earlier, it's more likely with 2nd+. I'm on #4 so it's not unexpected at all really!

I was just like you with #1. I had no idea, never really had any younger cousins etc that I had a lot to do with. I can remember her filling her 1st nappy and being totally unprepared and ignorant!

I've had 3 totally different labours and births: #1 15 hrs, gas & air, episiotomy - good experience; #2 22 hrs, G&A, pethidine (YUK), episiotomy (they did such things then...) - bad experience. Both these were spontaneous labour. #3 10 hrs, G&A, tear, back to back. Horrid horrid. Induced.

Possibly none of that you needed to hear! However, the point is I've had better and worse than OBEM. And, hey, I'm doing it again so it really can't be that bad!

Honestly, it doesn't need to be a big deal. It's kind of built up into this huge thing but really, for the majority it lasts hours out of a 40 week pg and the rest of your child's life so it's not that important.

I hope you can take something from that pile of waffly twaddle Blush

LadyGoneGaga · 16/02/2011 08:42

It seems like every birth is completely different! Mine was great (tens and birth pool at home) until he got stuck after 4 hours of pushing Hmm. Cue transfer to hospital in ambulance, pitocin drip, catheterisation, episiotomy, epidural and ventouse delivery. But all worth it. And trying for a home birth again as I think I can do it - he just happened to be in a really unusual position.

And it's totally worth it! Grin

wolfcubEm83 · 16/02/2011 09:30

Had my scan yesterday. Sonographer was a right battle axe! We went into the room and she said 'i wont be talking to you so if you have any questions please wait until i finish'. I understand that its a serious diagnostic test but she didnt talk us through anything and half the time we didnt know what we were looking at, it felt like being at school and having our fingers on our lips!!
After about 10 minutes she very matter of factly said 'baby has a kidney that is too large, dont worry as its very common and will probably sort itself out, i will book you another scan at 32 weeks'. End of!!! Shock She started to wipe the gel off my tummy and said 'any questions?' We were so shocked we didnt have any. I asked if we could find out the sex and she sort of huffed a bit and had a look for about 3 seconds and then said 'it looks like a little girl, please wait outside'
I came out of the room in tears, im not normally easily offended but she really ruined our experience. When she came to give us our notes back i had composed myself and my partner started firing questions at her but she got all annoyed and defensive and just said to wait and see what the 32 week scan shows as 95% of these cases sort themselves out. Maybe i was just being oversensitive but my OH got the same vibe.

Well, i know its common as it happened to my friends son and hes fine but ive never been so glad to get out of a hospital!!!
Im training to do a very similar job to her and its highlighted to me how NOT to treat people!!!

Hope everyone elses scans go ok x

Fraochsmum · 16/02/2011 09:32

Gosh Jimmy you're brave watching that! I put the birth of DD to the back of my mind till was necessary and completely avoided watching any tv births - I really didn't feel the need to freak myself out! As it was I had a great birth in my small local hospital, I can't honestly say how long labour was because it didn't feel as bad as I expected so did the '2 paracetamol and a bath as directed. When I felt I was in established labour I went into hospital, then was told I was 10cm dilated (by the way it felt, I had been for at least 15 mins before). I had g&a while pushing, but took 2 3/4 hours to get her out which I think was a combination of having no urge to push and being paranoid about pooing myself...and possibly the shock of not being in labour for days! I had no stiches or grazing, but my placenta stuck so I had to be flown by helicopter to Glasgow and get a spinal anyway Grin. Anyway, try not to worry about it, I certainly wasn't in pain with mine and hope for one similar this time - without the stuck placenta of course!

Congratulations Eglu!

Haha Button, do you think you could get away with that? My dh is desperate to know too, but I don't want to - he is hoping to sneak a peak x

Fraochsmum · 16/02/2011 09:37

Oh wollfcub that is horrible! What a bitch of a woman, Im not surprised you were so upset. That really is out of order and I might consider discussing her attitude with someone. I'm glad you know another person who has been in the same situation and had a good outcome, good luck for your next scan xxx

nicolamumof3 · 16/02/2011 11:39

wolfcub what a bitch! how horrible of her, she should have been able to answer any questions you may have had or if not able to to be able to refer you to someone who can. i would definitely complain. I wonder why some of these people go into these professions dealing with people at very delicate times when they have zero compassion or people skills.

eglu wow congrats on the pink!! Do you have two or three boys? I have three and will literally fall off bed if they say is a girl. Tho 99pc of me sure a boy and i've bought all boys stuff so far!

HighFibreDiet · 16/02/2011 12:00

oh wolfcub some healthcare professionals really do need more training in how to communicate with people better. I have had some sonographers who have been very matter of fact and indeed rude just like that but luckily the others have made up for it. By the way you don't need to keep going for extra scans unless an obstetrician or midwife has decided there's a real need. I had slightly too much liquor with ds1 and the sonographers kept re-booking me in for scans and it made me so worried (also they mentioned a few 'soft markers') but in the end I had an extra appointment with a doctor and he said there was no need to keep going for extra scans, as there wasn't anything else indicating that anything was wrong. And ds1 was fine when he was born.

I've had a few experiences myself recently. I'm really not used to the healthcare system over here in Australia and I've had a couple of appointments which have been horrendously delayed with no explanation. I'm not sure if I've just been unlucky or if this is the way things work (unless you have very expensive insurance and can go to the top notch facilities).

Plus the GP I saw heard that I wanted a home birth and said 'you don't want to hear my opinions on home births' then proceeded to tell me how lucky I had been to have had two perfectly fine home births and how scared she would be to give birth without all the medical support around her in case anything went wrong. Then (after a 3 hr delay for the appointment and after having told me how she basically disapproved of my birth choice) she decided to take my blood pressure. The machine didn't work twice and then it produced a very high systolic reading - which gave her more cause to mutter and ask me if I had been truthful in saying that I didn't have any problems with blood pressure in my previous two pregnancies. I just wanted to get out of there so I didn't point out that the annoyance of waiting so long plus the stress of her arguing with me could quite easily have produced a raised reading.

Then I had to have my bloods taken twice as she spelt my name wrong on the referral form and the lab queried it Angry.

I have my scan on Monday and I am really hoping the radiology staff are more professional and efficient than the GP was.

To be more positive Smile I finally managed to go to an antenatal yoga class today and the teacher was lovely so I hope I can make it a regular thing.

Eglu · 16/02/2011 18:12

Fraochsmum That is truly awful service and I would definitely complain. There is no reason to treat you like that. Especially then to tell you something potentailly worrying and not answer your questions courteously.

Nicola I have two boys but felt this pg was very much the same as the others. Even though I saw it clearly myself on the scan I still don't truly believe it. I have my NHS scan on Monday and will be asking them too, just to confirm. Grin

buttonmoon78 · 16/02/2011 21:21

Poor you wolfcub. What should be a lovely moment can be so easily spoiled by a stupid insensitive cow.

When we went for our 12 week scan the midwife called me to one side and asked if I wanted the nuchal testing (no) and had I had it fully explained (yes). That was that so I thanked her for not trying to talk me into it. She said 'why would I? You turn up here full of excitement and I promptly rain on your parade enough as it is asking you the question. I think it would be wrong of me to stress unlikely concerns.' I thought it was so reasonable and down to earth of her - she was lovely. It's a shame that others have had such poor service from people for whom it's a job not a calling.

Personally, I'm getting more convinced it's a girl. I've been getting horrid heartburn the last couple of days which I got badly and early with the girls but not so much with ds. I'm not bothered either way - just getting more and more curious!

cara2244 · 16/02/2011 21:57

HI everyone. Lying in the bath writing this on my phone as I have hit a bit of a wall today and am sooo tired! Freelance work seems to be flooding in for me at the mo which is good as I need the money but then I am also thinking about how hard its all going to get come the summer.

Wolfcub that's bad. It shouldn't be like that. I'd write a letter to the hospital.

Highfibre, I Did lots of yoga throughout pg 1 and again this time and it was so helpful in so many ways.

Lulu, I had a homebirth first time round and hoping for another. I had the choice to go in, ambulance was waiting as it was an unplanned hb, but staying at home just felt like the right thing to do. I think you have to go with what feels right on the day, and we are lucky to have choices and also to have such safe birthrates etc.

A couple of real finds this week - bravado bras - oh my, so comfortable and supportive. No more aching boobs for me. Also my back pain has been eased massively by arch supports in my shoes, bought from boots.

inbetweener · 17/02/2011 11:02

Hello all,

I dread to think how I might end up if this gets worse. Ideally I want to keep working till im 39 weeks which ties in with my annual leave

Scottygirl10 · 17/02/2011 12:39

Hello ladies :) haven't been on in a while so won't reply to individual posts in case I miss anyone out! I'll just wish you all well ;). Had my 20 week scan today. So emotional! Blubbed all the way through! Lol. Sat beside me was a very stoic dh until we asked the flavour and she showed us some bits and pieces, its a BOY! Then the tears were flowing! Lol. Really pleased he's healthy, feel I can exhale 20 weeks of holding my breath! Wishing all you ladies with scans coming up all the best, and congratulations to those who have had theirs x

Mitchell81 · 17/02/2011 12:44

Congratulations on all the scans and baby boys and girls. Got my 20 week scan and looking forward to it and getting them to confirm still is a boy before I go mad on buying blue. Last scan was private and this is Nhs.

LadyGoneGaga · 17/02/2011 12:46

Aw, Congratulations on your lovely scan, Scotty. And lovely to be having a little boy - boys rock! (a little biased here as I am totally in love with my little man)

Boo to have to wait Inbetweener. I'm 18 weeks on Sunday but luckily only have to wait two more weeks for my scan (we're away the following week so they slotted me in at 19 weeks and 5 days!). Soon be halfway through and on the home stretch!

buttonmoon78 · 17/02/2011 14:38

Inbetweener I'm sorry to say I had it that early with #3. Might I strongly suggest you get in touch with your gp / MW within the next couple of days? Ask to be referred as an urgent case to an obstetric physio? I promise you it will make a difference. I suffered for a good few weeks before I insisted I didn't need to suffer like that. Sorry to be negative, but IME you really need to be pushy to get help.

Am totally in a good mood today though. DH is away for 2 weeks doing some work (yay!) and I had an appointment to get a haircut today. He texted this morning and suggested I get some colour done or something. I was so chuffed as I was planning to get it done last year (until he lost his job) but money's been so tight recently it's just got postponed. Anyway, it's done and I look gorgeous and feel fab!

hefner · 17/02/2011 15:16

I'm glad to hear you're feeling good buttonmoon.

It's lovely to hear about everyone's scans. Mine is next week and we're not planning to find out the sex, although seeing everyone else finding out is making me feel a bit tempted!

Eglu · 17/02/2011 18:41

inbetweener I have been feeling similar symptoms to you. I was concerned it may be mild SPD. This is my third but I've not suffered before.

Mitchell I'm waiting for my NHS scan before I go crazy with the pink stuff. Although it was very clear on out private scan, I was so convinced this was a boy I can't quite bring myself to believe it. Grin Also having two boys I feel a bit of a fraud going into the girls department of shops.

Hefner the surprise at the end is worth the wait too. We only found out this time as we've done the surprise thing twice already. It is particularly lovely if you ask the mw not to tell you and let you look yourself, which we did with DS2.

cara2244 · 17/02/2011 21:51

Inbetweener try a birthing ball maybe?? Mine has helped so much with my back pain. Not the same I know, but they're meant to be good for that whole area.

JimmyChoo17 · 17/02/2011 22:20

Does anyones hospital refuse to tell u gender? Mine won't tell you. I'm glad as it stops temptations in finding out the sex!

I like the idea of waiting as this is my first but hate that the choice has been taken away from me.

I have my 20 week scan at 19 weeks next week.

For those of you feeling movements with your first...how often do u feel them? Mine were like clockwork in the evening but beans been very quiet these past 2 day/nights whipped out the Doppler so heartbeat is still thudding away but liked feeling bean move!

Button....not waffly twaddle at all, I like that orders have been just as in denial first time round :)

But 2 nd or 3rd...wonder if u have a sense of impending doom? Wink

Eglu I sometimes get that....very rare but have felt the same since 16 weeks!

At your 20 week scan girls...do they explain what they r looking for and give results whilst u r there?

JimmyChoo17 · 17/02/2011 22:21

Orders?? Others I mean! Stupid predictive text xx

buttonmoon78 · 17/02/2011 22:31

Still feeling gorgeous. Still swishing my hair about like a shampoo ad.

Baby definitely on the move now. Bouncing around like nobody's business!

Just wondering what to have for my late night crapfest healthy snack this evening?

SpannerPants · 18/02/2011 08:45

I'm really struggling with back pain today. Have an obstetric physio appointment on Monday but I can barely get to the toilet and back today! I've had to resort to taking some co-codamol which my GP prescribed for it, but that makes me feel sick and dizzy! Not a happy bunny all in all :(

inbetweener · 18/02/2011 10:12

Morning all,
I went to bed at 9pm last night and slept with my pillow between my thighs lol which seems to have eased the pain no end !! Its not nearly as bad today !

So glad its friday though, i didnt want to get up this morning. Luckily the girls started halferm today so didnt have to rush about doing lunch boxes etc. Their dad is at home with them today while I am here at work. Between you and me I have the easier job lol.

Im 18+1 today girls Grin which is great but I am just not feeling nay movement Sad
Im sure I was feeling so much more with DD2 by now !
I have another MW appt on tuesday as thye want to check my slowly rising blood pressure so I am hoping for a reassuring heartbeat. I just hate having to wait so long for my scan. Nearly 23 weeks seems ages away !!

Still I have a couple of days off next week so am hoping to do some nice things in halfterm. anyone got any plans ?

Twit · 18/02/2011 17:28

jimmychoo all the ones I've been to have talked us through what they are looking at, but then we have always been told what we were having when we asked . I do know some areas won't do it, possibly in case of cultures where boys are more wanted than girls.

I have been sleeping with a pillow betwixt my legs for a while now, and it does help. I also have a cushion under my stomach Blush

So I ahd my 20 week scan today, everything seems fine so hopefully I'll sleep better tonight. We are having another boy, so 2 boys, 1 girl and 2 boys. I am relieved at how happy I feel to be having a boy. DD is a bit upset at no sister, but is thinking up names (Zeus, Draco and Frodo so far Hmm). The bigger boys were really happy and excited, DS2 wanted to run and tell his friend straight away, and DS1 said
"What you've had intercourse again, like five times?" (They're doing reproduction at school and uses the correct names for everything. He is also clearly under the impression that one only has sex when one wants to get upduffed. WHich is right obviously Wink) DS3 looked at the picture, took in the head etc and caried on playing. He was more concerned about him and DS2 going to Grandmas house tonight. Quite right too.
