Yes thats why i am tempted by the Cosatto one, it says it's beech too but looks darker like the drawers. Only reason going for that particular Mothercare one is because i am after a bed side one so we can keep our options open re where the baby is going to sleep. Its the cheapest on I've found (so far) So if you are co sleeping does MiniG only use that during the day or does he sleep in his own room now?

LadyGoneGaga · 10/12/2010 15:10

MiniG is in a Big boy bed now, I often sleep in it with him! We bought the cot, he didn't use it very much. PiL's were quite pissed off as they bought it for us. I'm not sure about the expense of the bedside cot. Your baby will want to either be right next to you snuggled. Or, you will still have to work at putting them slightly further away. And you could still do that with a standard drop side cot I reckon - I think they are quite expensive for what they are TBH but JMO as haven't actually had one to know...

Are you having a moses basket for early on? I'm still trying to work out whether to get one - MiniG hated the one we borrowed. I'm wondering whether one with a rocking stand might have helped us Confused

OP posts:
rocketleaf · 10/12/2010 15:18

Mmm, i suppose the idea is that you can feed and put them back in without getting out of bed. But i think it will make ME getting in and out of bed difficult so maybe an ordinary one next to the bed with a small gap would be ok.

Yes re: moses basket but only because my cousin is giving us one. Really lucky as her daughter is only a couple of months old (and they aren't planning on having more) so she is going to give us all the new born stuff when she's finished with it. So maybe that on a stand next to the bed would be better. Too many options really and haven't got a clue TBH!

Muser · 10/12/2010 15:19

We're doing moses basket on stand next to bed. If Bob hates the moses basket, then we'd better buy a cot pretty damn quick. Or co sleep.

rocketleaf · 10/12/2010 15:34

Duh, that actually makes total sense, I had completely forgotten that she was giving it to us until lady asked and sounds like a much more sensible option. PESH to the rescue!

LadyGoneGaga · 10/12/2010 15:46

With the normal drop side cot you can have it on its highest setting and then drop side as far as goes and it only leaves a small 10-15cm lip anyway which is easy to hoick baby over. So you can still lift them over without exiting bed anyway.

See if you can get a rocking stand for Moses though. I reckon is way forward for getting babies to sleep.

Medee · 10/12/2010 15:50

We?re shoe-horning baby into our room/ spare room, so there won?t be much in the way of additional furniture. No changing station for example, we shall just get a changing mat for the top of the existing chest of drawers, and have the top drawers as storage for nappy changing stuff. As my mother and MIL said ?we changed you on the floor, on the sofa, on the table?, so as long as there is a protective surface under baby, what they?re on probably doesn?t matter much. But probably not the bed if it?s a boy!

So, we?re just going to be getting a moses basket, to begin with, a changing mat, a bouncing chair, and then lots of smaller paraphernalia.

CurlyCasper · 10/12/2010 15:51

sorry I've not fully caught up but wanted to say that Mothercare bedside cot is a lovely cot, but crap for bedside because of the way the mattress sits inside the frame - when you put away the side that goes against the bed you have a big gap where it would have been, which just adds to any night time worries you might already hav. I hope that makes sense. We have the cot, but had to make far too many modifications to even try it as a bedside cot. It just set up as a normal one now.

rocketleaf · 10/12/2010 16:05

thanks for the info curly It does clarify things a bit as that was the ONLY reason I;d get that one. So will probably get one of the cheaper Mothercare ones or maybe Ikea.

muse how did i miss those willy wigwams on your earlier post!!! chortle :o

medee i think thats probably the ticket. We don't really have a chest the right height tho or much extra storage space. I bet I end up doing most of the changing on the coffee table after all this. (nice)

PrincessBoo · 10/12/2010 18:07

Rocket We had a bedside cot (a cossato olivia one - bought off ebay) He didn't sleep in it much in the end but the idea was that I could push him into it should I need to. In the end it served as a rather expensive barrier to stop him fallin out of bed if he was on the outside edge Grin, or I would stretch out into it if he was in the middle. It did work though - no gap - I think we had to pull the mattress over slightly.

We also got given a moses basket. I used to put him in it for naps downstairs until he got to big for it - it was ace as it had a rocker with it too.

PrincessBoo · 10/12/2010 18:07

*too big even.

Evening all! Just back from an expensive trip to John Lewis in Bluewater.... We have been given a crib which we will put next to our bed and have bought a cot bed for his room later.

There were many many decisions to make. Car seats, prams, mattresses, breast pumps, blimey it was all a bit stressful... Although I DID love choosing gro bags and I found a gorgeous baby changing bag which I could afford thanks to my present of vouchers from work! When I had the boy child the only choice was a black rucksack, very dull....

Oops, mentioned the boy child by name, had to delete the message....

AlpinePony · 10/12/2010 20:00

I really don't think you need an expensive changing table, nor do you need one of those cutesey changing mat covers - that, I can guarantee you, will get covered in pee & poo (curly and I invested in a dozen cheap white hand towels from IKEA at 29p a pop). That's part of the initiation process you know - there will be two of you trying to change a nappy on something smaller than a free-range chicken and you'll both have poo on you. A fortnight down the line and you'll be able to do it blindfold. As for boys and their winkies, it's been less than a handful of times he's actually "got" me.

Scorpette · 10/12/2010 20:09

Have even worse headache today than usual so am making a fleeting visit to administer snogs and knuckleduster-punches and to inform those gripped by Scorps' Neverending Quest For Straight-Leg Jeans that I have bought some in the sale from Mothercare (not the coolest but comfy and cheap!) and also some funky preggo tight in snazzy colours. I am now off to quite literally lie in a darkened room. Laterz, beyotches...

PS Am speechless at Willy Wigwams.

rocketleaf · 10/12/2010 20:09

Not planning on a expensive one pony Just a chest of drawers will do as need the storage. My sis has been covered in wee mid change several times and she has girls so not sure sex makes much difference :o

Oopsie mrs shopping trip sounds lovely esp as you got a treat for yourself too.

Medee · 10/12/2010 20:39

hurrah for jeans!

TwinkleToes76 · 10/12/2010 21:10

'lo all, just popping in to say 12 week scan today was all good, baby was very cute and waving. Due date now bought forward to June 20th.

Did any second timers find it much more medicalised than the last time? I had to stand on some weird machine holding probes for 5 minutes while it measured every detail of my body and weight and fat etc, had BP taken 4 times on each arm and then two scans (one abdominal and one trans vaginal) and two sonographers and it included measuring my cervix to assess likeliness of preterm labour - at 12 weeks??!! However, they did run the blood for the down syndrome screening there and then so results (1:10,000) came back within 30 mins.

Anyone want to buy a good quality second hand silver cross 3D pushchair, suitable from birth? Only used for 5/6 months so in good condition. I'm buying a bugaboo from a friend so need to get rid of the one we have. Only looking for £50 or something but if you're out of London you'll have to pay posting and package but still a bargain I think! Let me know if you're interested. this is it but I don't have the car seat.

Have good evenings PESHies, I'm already on the sofa with a quilt, my book and a packet of hobnobs...fun times people, fun times.

CluckyKate · 10/12/2010 21:41

Blimey Rockstar - not sure how your sister was got as girls operate more of a sprinkler system as opposed to the power jet exhibited by boys.

Did not Cheggers have the first ESH-twinz Scorps ???

Agree with Alps - is really easy to get caught-up in the baby-marketing thang and be convinced you need all the snazzy shebazzle on offer when a couple of tea towels & a plastic change mat will doo Smile

PollyPoo · 10/12/2010 21:54

Congrats on the scan Twinks, it is so amazing to see them wriggling around isn't it! Can't believe the tests you went through - I didn't get any of that. Just the bloods and the scan.

Glad to hear of the successful shopping trips Scorps and *MsFC - did the FC have heart failure at the cost of it all?!

I decided this time I would treat myself to a changing table - a whole £28 from ikea. I didn't bother with Boo and just changed her on the floor or the bed. Unfortunately various back problems over the years + the labour = my back was utterly shagged until Boo was about a year old. I am not going to put myself through that again. I figured the changer is so cheap, I will either flog it on at an NCT sale, or more than likely, shove it in the shed and use it for storage a year down the line.

With regard to cots and sleeping and routines etc, I am the kind of person who does better on a routine (even if I am too lazy to stick to it sometimes) and Boo was the kind of child who thrived on it, so we found the baby whisperer worked brilliantly for us. We've put the cot next to our bed with one side off, and I've put the moses basket on top for now. Second time around I seem to have less rigid ideas - if this baybee doesn't like the moses basket or cot I am not against trying co-sleeping - I think it will be a case of wait and see what kind of baby we get and take it from there. Boo was brilliant - slept through the night from 5 weeks, learnt to self settle very early on and it just seemed that she was born content. She wouldn't be held or rocked to sleep - she had to be put in her own bed and would settle herself. I am under no illusions that the next one will probably be completely different and the things that worked for Boo may not work so I will probably be starting from scratch.

One thing I did find invaluable with Boo was the Dunstan Baby Language DVD - it teaches you how to recognise the 5 different cries that all newborn babies have. It is amazingly simple and took all the guess work out - we knew straight away what was wrong and could therefore pacify her quickly. Made a huge difference to my confidence I can tell thee. The only bad thing about it was the woman presenting the DVD (Ms Dunstan herself) was incredibly annoying and made me want to punch her face in. It did mean I had to re-watch some of the chapters as I found I was focussing on how annoying she was instead of actually listening. That said, I will happily pass it on to another ESH in the new year once I've got to grips with this baybee if anyone is interested? Register now and I won't forget I promise!

Right, I've just stuffed my face with fish and chips and I reckon my bed is calling. I am still trying to store up sleep for later. Cos that really works doesn't it? Yes?

CluckyKate · 10/12/2010 22:31

Boo sounds very like LC Polly...makes me worry for the mext one as surely I'm not lucky enough to have two brillaint baybees Xmas Hmm

Must admit to watching that DVD once in the early days and just couldn't any difference between the various cries. Managed to suss it out in the end but took lots of practice & much getting it wrong.

PollyPoo · 10/12/2010 22:52

I know what you mean Clucky - how could I be that lucky twice?! Of course there are so many people who are just dying for us to spawn a demon child as they were jealous of how easy we've had it with Boo. Nice eh?

I found the most helpful cry to differentiate was the hungry one - once I could discount that I stopped shoving my boob/bottle in her gob and looked at the alternatives. Luckily, she rarely cried except for hunger or wind, and as I driven by routine, she rarely got to the point of a hunger meltdown, so it was usually wind. She was a very windy baby but infacol helped loads.

Is LC still an 'easy' child? Boo is, bless her. I'm sure I will pay at some point - she will probably be the most rebellious hideous teenager that ever lived. Oh god, I've just had an awful thought... she might go the way of my sister in her teenage years. NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. (Sis + teenage years = shoplifting, drugs, booze, lovely 'professional criminal' boyfriends, fraud, burglary, a possible dalliance with prostition, prison. In short, hell on earth.) Gah, what a hideous thought.

Gah, posting FAIL.

AlpinePony · 11/12/2010 07:36

Twinks Massive congratulations! Grin That was a lot of testing, maybe they were just checking your glue? Confused

Kate/Polly Sssssshhhh! Shock Nobody wants to hear you've got an "easy" baby. Wink Actually there's a grain of truth in that. I feel like I can't share the good stuff - seriously, have nobody to talk to. :( Not sure about paying for it with teenage years - reckon I earned this for my pregnancy!
